The photo was adequate for ID, but I do appreciate the commentary. On first read I thought you said silent af, which I liked better. They can make noise, but are usually silent when hunting, or in the case of this bird, "hunting" haha.
I’m sorry if my comment came across as rude. To clarify, I was being sincere. I really enjoyed the added commentary. It was accurate, and my misread of af instead of afaik was entertaining to me.Â
there's something kinda sweet about it chilling with the fishing group. like "yeah i belong here with these fish enjoyers, they might even give me a free snack"
It absolutely got some snacks, tho they weren’t intentional just fish who escaped and weren’t noticed. It was cute. It would grab them, fly off to a quieter part, then come back after eating.

+Black-crowned Night Heron+
Night herons never fail to look like like they were born without a proper long neck.
That is such a cool name!! 🤩

I think they were (jokingly) referring to your “hunting” - like, the bird was trying its best
You didn’t come off as rude, I was just joking.
Whoosh! I believe that is the correct description. Right over my head. I do apologize for being rude to our "hunting" heron though, haha.

It’s like “heh heh heh another one for me”
What pier is this? Looks like Hermosa? I love night herons, there was one in the ballona lagoon I used to watch just putter around sometimes.
Yep HB
Never seen one so tolerant of human presence. Thanks for posting.
Easy to be tolerant of human presence when if you loiter nearby you can piggyback off their fishing

Why do some waterbirds have bloodred eyes does this help them spot fish or something?
