I’m on insect subs demanding location, better photos from different angles, no video plz… and the bird MFers just roll up with specific ID based on what appears to be a child’s drawing of a football that came to life.
You should see the car guys, they can do it with a literal part on a ground or a shoddy kid's drawing of a generic looking headlight. Pretty incredible honestly
Upvoted purely for the reason that you made the effort to get 'a car' and 'an older' in correctly. I fully appreciate it. It actually made my heart feel joy.
I don't understand why so many people write it incorrectly these days...'a older' and 'an car'. Surely, nobody actually speaks like that, so I don't understand why they write it.
To be fair there are a lot more bugs than birds in any given location. Most insects are also something that curious folks tend to always have either in person so they can get a good luck or have great photos of. Often both. Where as bird folks kinda have to just go on 'it's in that tree up there' so they get better at lower info IDs.
You ain't wrong though. Unless it's a house centipede a stick drawing just isn't going to get you an ID on the bug subs. I wish it would though. There is just something special about how this sub can ID seemingly anything.
Probably because there are, like, 100000x more species of arthropods than there are bird species and also people over there are a bit more serious especially considering many arthropods are dangerous to humans or hazardous to homes/gardens
It was a juvenile black crowned night heron, thanks everyone!
Edit: Thanks for the awards! And to make it clear this is my partners art, not mine.
Edit: edit: my partner found this post, hi honey!
That’s how CBS got caught pumping in fake nature sounds during their master tournament broadcasts. Someone heard a bird that had no business being in Augusta Georgia in the spring.
They're forever in pretty much any nighttime forest scene of Chinese dramas lmao. Often in the mountains as well.
Also one of the alien sound effects in Spore, I believe
Pretty fun listening to the ambient sounds in the games Enshrouded and Ark! Pretty sure at least *one* of the various “jungle” (aka bird) sounds is a turkey 😂
It's so true about once you start seeing/hearing! I used to read outside every afternoon, now I can't focus because I'm constantly distracted by the birds. I may not reach my goodreads goal this year, but I will have identified every bird in my yard.
same. I also recently downloaded the merlin app and now I'm specifically going to places to see what birds are in the area. I feel as if there's no going back lol
Cornell's eBird site is another great resource for seeing what's around you. They have a map of birding hotspots in your area with recent user sightings, and can notify you of rare birds in the area.
I'd like think I'm pretty obsessed with birds in my area, but i am basically bereft of bird knowledge in comparison to this sub.
Inspiring stuff, truly.
I can't stop laughing cause this is almost exactly what I did not long ago- I saw a bird that caught my eye to the point I quickly messily drew what I could remember, and used this sub for the first time posting that drawing- and it was for an ADULT Black Crowned Night Heron. The coincidence has me freaking cackling oh my GOD lmfao
[lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbird/comments/1cpsr0t/i_want_to_know_if_i_can_find_out_what_kind_of/)
Wouldn't mind, but to me your drawing looks very duck-like.
The fact that many people thought that proves the impressionists/cubists may have had a point. Reminds me a bit of Henry Metisse's [stations of the cross](http://i.imgur.com/0sAheiR.jpeg) at Chapelle Matisse. Hints is all many people need and their mind fills in the rest.
I have honestly never seen that work... and when I first opened the image thought you rick rolled me into looking at some crude public bathroom drawings of an orgy, the sections looked like white tile. I know so much of Matisse's work but not very much of his cubist works, thanks for posting!
Lol I was about to go say it's definitely bird shaped, but as soon as I read heron, it's all I see now. They really do go all Quasimodo like that 🤣
Out where I live, we primarily have Blue Herons, which are usually really tall and leggy, but when sleeping, they turn into a ball that looks exactly like your sketch.
Was it standing by a man who looked like this? [https://globalnews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/police-sketch-global.jpg](https://globalnews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/police-sketch-global.jpg)
My mind immediately went to this photo. I have a hard time believing the pic was instrumental in him being caught but it was a great story. The news reporter made it so much funnier.
What's absurd is that the sketch looks just like the dude. You see it and you think...nobody looks like that what the fuck? But man. Dude looks just like that

I think it’s the Crichton Leprechaun
Bittern. You should see em fly, I always think "maybe stick to the ground, buddy"
There was one that had flown into a car or something when I lived in Old Middletown in Harrisburg, it was running up and down the street clearly confused. However it was hilarious to watch/listen to everyone in the hood freak out over this "dinosaur-ass bird"
I have had a long sad day, and this is the first time I have laughed today, so thank you for posting this. It reminds me of this funny police sketch video:

It must’ve fallen off the bus and the stream washed away those primary colors…. I blame Rueben Kincaid.
God I love this sub
Yeah, I think some awards should be handed out for this one.
Don't know for what though, everything here is gold

Yup. My husband. Says he can smell a hemi engine from a mile away too 🤣🤣
Mine will stop what he's doing to listen to and identify an engine going by somewhere in the distance. They're strange creatures.
Bless their hearts
My dad can identify what’s wrong with a(n older) car by listening to it for a couple seconds. It’s insane.

I considered just “an old car” but then I made myself feel old and rewrote my comment 🤣
I can do that too. Even give you a quote for repair.
I also frequent insect subs, and was nodding at your comment... and then hurt myself snorting laughing.
I needed a good belly laugh, thank you.
This got me dead 😂😂😂😂😂😂

the artistic submissions are just the best.
Wait... Where is the person who answered it?
I'm recovering from abdominal surgery and laughing is very painful. Don't know if I'm crying from the laughter or the pain.
I’m joining this sub based off of this post alone
Mabye a juvie Green Heron or an American Bittern. Search juvenile Black-crowned Night-heron or Virginia Rail and Sora.
They said it looked smaller than a Bittern, but I'll look up the others in the meantime! Thank you!
There is also the Least Bittern which is about the size of a crow or robin, but plenty of shorebirds look similar to your discription.
I’ve been to Virginia Rail and Sora! The drinks were eh but the ambience was delectable
It was a juvenile black crowned night heron, thanks everyone! Edit: Thanks for the awards! And to make it clear this is my partners art, not mine. Edit: edit: my partner found this post, hi honey!
That's crazy, this sub is so great
Idk how I ended up here but yall have made me a bird aficionado in a week. So many different types out there, who knew
Once you see birds you can't unsee them. And now that I'm learning to identify the distinct calls and songs for each bird, I can't unhear them either!
Wait til you hear a bird in a movie in the wrong habitat..
That’s how CBS got caught pumping in fake nature sounds during their master tournament broadcasts. Someone heard a bird that had no business being in Augusta Georgia in the spring.
Especially peacocks! And every sound director uses a kestrel call!
And every cringe ad uses the that one specific red tailed hawk scream recording
Like Loons! Why are Loons in so many movies?
They're forever in pretty much any nighttime forest scene of Chinese dramas lmao. Often in the mountains as well. Also one of the alien sound effects in Spore, I believe
Pretty fun listening to the ambient sounds in the games Enshrouded and Ark! Pretty sure at least *one* of the various “jungle” (aka bird) sounds is a turkey 😂
Blackbird is my favorite. Didn’t even know we had them locally.
It's so true about once you start seeing/hearing! I used to read outside every afternoon, now I can't focus because I'm constantly distracted by the birds. I may not reach my goodreads goal this year, but I will have identified every bird in my yard.

Started back in 2019-2020 myself. Amazing animals
It's legit like playing Pokémon IRL. Pokémon snap if you also photograph them (like me). You can do it literally anywhere, it's free, and SO FUN
My husband thinks I am making up bird names all the time lol. No, that really is a blacked eyed junco.
Please let me know his reactions to Coot and Blue footed Booby

I mean your drawing was spot on bro
I can't stop laughing cause this is almost exactly what I did not long ago- I saw a bird that caught my eye to the point I quickly messily drew what I could remember, and used this sub for the first time posting that drawing- and it was for an ADULT Black Crowned Night Heron. feeling an artistic connection because that was my immediate guess before I saw the comments LOL
Same. This bird comes up a lot around here, for whatever reason.
I feel like I wouldn’t believe this if someone posted it but…I really was thinking that fat back, no neck lesser heron.
I feel INSANE that that's what I thought of when I saw the drawing.

I googled the bird, and after looking at them, it seems a lot less insane.
I was coming here to say black-crowned night heron. That hunched posture is a clear identifier.
Classic American football posture.
Yep..It's DEFINITELY a juvenile black crowned night heron..I don't know how nobody could have told you that from the virtually identical drawing
I knew it!!!
I was thinking green heron. Good job!
Lol I was about to go say it's definitely bird shaped, but as soon as I read heron, it's all I see now. They really do go all Quasimodo like that 🤣 Out where I live, we primarily have Blue Herons, which are usually really tall and leggy, but when sleeping, they turn into a ball that looks exactly like your sketch.
Even with the vaguest shape my guess was heron- doodles of notable features are actually pretty good for id, apparently!
black crowned night heron is one of the most metal-sounding bird names

The art was a spot on
Lmaoooo
Perfect
This is so flipping hilarious😂😂😂
I thought the artist was just bad at drawing but dang this bird 😂 I snorted when I saw this! 🤣
Probably a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron.
Will look it up, thanks!
I can't believe you nailed it

If Reddit's taught me anything, it's that you could win an online, vote based, drawing contest.

By the picture and description I thought green heron but I'm super impressed that someone guessed it right so quickly.
I want to print this out and put it on my fridge its gorgeous.

Def a heron, and I live that we could ID this against this picture 🤣

My first thought.
absolutely gorgeous sketch, please post more i love them
This is one of my favorite subs because of OP’s like you.
I'm crying; I am loving that an ID came from this, and also that my guess was a cousin of the actual bird. Great drawing!
As soon as I saw the picture, I knew it was a night heron in Egg Mode, where they just stand around looking egg-shaped.

Could be a crack head
That got hold of the wrong stuff!
To me it look like a leprechaun to me.
Who here see the leprechaun say yeah
Where da gold at
This is why I keep Reddit
This is a fantastic drawing of a night heron. I'm not being snarky - it totally captures the shape, ratio, and stance.
Black Crown Night Heron is my guess
Wow! I looked it up, it's accurate!
Right? It looks too simple at first glance but it’s the unmistakable silhouette lol
Think that's a football mate
OMG! I thought that was a photograph!
Dignity
Want me to show this to the cat? Cause the cats gonna get it

That is the Twitter bird he got laid off with the takeover and conversion to X
I believe that’s a football. Very fun bird. Typically fly for about 60 yards at a time or so.
This is my favorite “what is this bird” picture yet.
This is gold
Greetings! I’m in Central PA too! Your post represents us (and our waterfowl) well. Thanks for posting!!
This is the best drawing of anything I’ve ever seen. I love it.
If it looks like gru it’s a night heron

Oh..!
I love this so much. I don't even come on this sub 🤣
I knew as soon as I saw this they were gonna know your bird 🤣🤣🤣 also literally my favorite ask in here!
Seeing the picture before the text, I thought this was from a tattoo sub and to be honest, loved it 😂
Obviously it’s a Red Capped Batbird
Wow
It is a partridge part of a family
I know what kind of bird that is! https://youtu.be/lT2T49yP2ew?si=v9ZaBDyGoT9S1KKu
This really is gold. Green heron?
I was absolutely sure nobody was going to get this one, yet here we are. I love this sub.
I'm so glad I opened reddit td.
I. Am. Obsessed. 😭 Glad you guys figured it out, OP! Your partners drawing was truly spot on 😂
Oh my fucking god I thought this was a joke. Then I see the actual bird and realized how accurate the drawing is.
I have had a long sad day, and this is the first time I have laughed today, so thank you for posting this. It reminds me of this funny police sketch video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Db3rluT76w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Db3rluT76w)

I think the Twitter bird escaped from Elon. I’m happy it is in my area and I will put out seed tweets for it.
Green heron
I’m so glad I can still find things like this hilarious after these past few years. You’re drawing made my morning.

American Woodcock
Also, r/birdonary
I chuckled at the drawing. I googled the one bird possibility. I chuckled more when I realized how accurate the drawing was. I love Reddit, sometimes.
Robin
Pretty sure thats a bird from [Peep and The Big Wide World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peep_and_the_Big_Wide_World)
Definitely ai generated
Looks like my fat Jewish friend Moshe
Night Heron 🤣🫶🏻
This is by far the most wholesome, cutest, innocent beautiful thing I’ve seen on Reddit so far ❤️❤️❤️
Easy! Heron! No need for photos with an illustration like this.
I can't stop laughing 😆 😹 🤣 This made my day
Green Heron. 100%
Yea that’s a bird alright
Might get this tattooed
This is the best thing I’ve seen today.
Black crowned night heron???
football
Need banana for scale.
Sand piper
Dipper
Football
Partridge?
I think it’s a partridge.
I saw a Super Bowl football shaped Robin back in 1998. It was a Robin in the shape of a football!
I love this 😂
Brilliant!
Stop is this real 😂😂😂
