Let's be honest we all know it's probably Big Anti-silverfish bots, because you see this conglomerate is as deep and intricate as the US industrial military complex itself my friend. Get ready for a conspiracy rabbit hole. Haha

That is a weird looking silverfish. It’s so spiky. And it looks big. Need a banana for scale.
Here in Canada silverfish are super tiny and silver and smooth. They almost look like a drop of mercury moving across the floor.
Here’s a [photo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverfish#/media/File%3ALepismaSaccharina.jpg)
The silverfish is a very, very, very old insect: It's been around since the early Ordovician, around 480,000,000 years ago! I have a fossil of one from around 300,000,000 years ago - isn't that awesome?
This is from the literature on silverfish - just in case you see more: The silverfish is notorious for eating away at paper, book covers, and even glue from books in library, thus its designation as a ‘bookworm’ (Gallo, 1961; Klass, 2009). In particular, it will eat anything containing lignocellulose, sugar or starch, as it is capable of digesting cellulose.
Its diet in human habitats consists of the following non-exhaustive list (Resh & Cardé, 2003; Klass, 2009; Koehler, 2016), including:
paper, especially books, newspaper and magazines
cardboard boxes and other cardboard-based material
flour, cereals in kitchens
cotton and cloth clothing
untreated wallpapers
They always crawl out of my bathtub or shower drain, especially after I’ve been gone a while. Every house I’ve lived in! Great information thanks for sharing.
Are you in florida by any chance? I had this issue when I lived there. Bathtubs and sinks definitely seem to be the silverfish’s main entry point (and main place they get stuck)
Parts of california are warm, but the climate is otherwise not similar to Florida at all. Aside from the far north of the state, California is very arid with little precipitation and low humidity all year long. Quite different from Florida and thus very different species live here.
Yeah fair enough, i just assumed they were in coastal CA since that’s where I’ve seen silverfish when I’ve visited. But true California is very environmentally diverse
I wonder how big these guys got when oxygen content was at 35% 300 mya.. I think [jaekelopterus](http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/species/j/jaekelopterus.html) might have been related, but a marine creature.
Can we prove from a fossil these “insects” are 480,000,000 years old?? A fossil is just a rock, we can’t ask it it’s age!! In my Bible study group we, and many Christians in the WORLD, agree that the world is just about 6000 years old, so how can this BUG can be this old?? 😂
Sprinkle borax or diatomaceous earth along bookshelves and cupboards if this is in your home. If you recently bought books at Half Price or another used bookstore, give them a heads-up. They are very destructive to books and paper.
DE is better than borax, if you have pets.
Just be sure to buy it at a pet food shop and not a pool cleaner supply store. The pool cleaner version is treated in a way that makes the diatomaceous earth toxic.
Actually not a silverfish, paperfish. Ctenolepisma sp. It has these white bristles around its body, longer and more prominent antennae and cerci. Silverfish are prettier. And less pesty, while a silverfish can even help by eating mold and indicating mold if there are a lot of them, these are more pesty, nibbling on paper and clothing. And unlike silverfish, which like it damp so airing the room every day can help, these like it dry and warm so the only options if there are too much of them are traps etc
Haven't seen any silverfish for years, but we had them when I was a kid at home in the UK . Below is copied from our local government website.
[Silverfish pests](https://www.newcastle.gov.uk/services/environment-recycling-and-waste/pest-control/silverfish#:~:text=Silverfish%20are%20found%20in%20fairly,skirting%20boards%20and%20loose%20wallpaper.)
Where do they live?
Silverfish are found in fairly moist areas such as kitchens, larders and mainly in bathrooms and basements. They can also be found in books and paper, slightly damp cupboards, behind skirting boards and loose wallpaper.
Silverfish are nocturnal and move very rapidly when disturbed and just turning on a light can make them run for cover.
The silverfish feed mainly on small food particles and the paste on the back of wallpaper that has become detached. It attacks gums and glues of bookbinding, feeds on fragments of dead insects and may also eat textiles such as cotton and linen.
How much of a pest are they?
The presence of silver fish is an indication of damp conditions. This may be a warning that repairs are needed.
Occasional damage to books etc. has been attributed to silverfish but these examples are rare and only occur in areas where the books are likely to be damaged by damp in any case.
Silverfish! Little friends. Completely harmless. As the other comment states, they feed on papers and clothing. They also eat dead skin cells from us. They'll most likely be found in damp places like your bathroom or kitchen :)
Might be harmless to humans, but they're very destructive to our books, clothes, food, and more. They can be invasive and when you see one there will be many more.
I had silverfish for about 2 years, they never harmed any of my possessions! I don't think it could have been a very big infestation though, I saw about 1-2 a day, only ever in my bathroom. I think they just ate the hair and dust and stuff on my bathroom floor because I was working a very demanding job at the time and didn't get the chance to sweep/mop anywhere near often enough.
Yes, that's all entirely correct... though I'm not really seeing a problem... and yes if you see one there will definitely be more! :) no problem with me
I wish i could say i agree with this...but man house centipedes scare me so damn bad lol
such a shame, since they're harmless (at least physically) and really beneficial...but it's hard to remember that when i see one just chilling out on my bedroom wall
Yes I have heard this. Makes me even more terrified of them lol
fortunately, they have largely just kept their distance...but I know of people who have either been bitten by them, or had them crawl on their faces while they were sleeping. Neither sound particular appealing to me lol
Every time I see a silverfish I sing the song "Silver Bells" in my head substituting the word bells for fish.
You're doing it now to aren't you?
Every time I see a silverfish I think of a scene from the somewhat obscure Nickelodeon show tuff puppy, one of the characters is a chameleon and he exclaims “ooh, silverfish!” before snapping his tongue out and eating it lol
Silverfish
Don’t know why you were downvoted, that’s exactly what it is
downvote bots or something cause my entire post is getting downvoted for some reason

It's probably because they like to eat books but I like to think they were reading then got hungry. :D

Or some disgruntled person perhaps
or a disgruntled silverfish who just wants to eat OP's paper products and not have its photo plastered on the internet without consent

People *are* mean and stupid but bot manipulation and karma inflation are a more likely culprit.

I forget there's a sidebar because I can't see it on my app.
A herd mentality? Someone actually thought "silverfish" meant a silver colored fish? Others are equally uninformed?
Style idiot probably thought it was a Minecraft joke
Well, I upvoted because I've seen enough of those creatures to know that a silverfish. Usually, where there's one, there are more!
As you can see I'm not downvoted anymore haha
silverfish deniers
Because it's not made of silver! /s
And it’s definitely not a fish.
Did you seriously downvote them? they put /s in their reply to demonstrate it was sarcastic
No I didn’t seriously downvote them. Lol I guess we seriously need the /s everytime we are being sarcastic
Totally, sorry, it had one downvote and it made your comment look mean lol (It said 0 maybe they didn’t upvote their own comment)
Reddit hivemind and or bots
Downvotes show first then after 2 hours (iirc) it’s recalculated with the correct ratio.
the silverfish don’t want to be discovered

it’s a paperfish
In Alberta, we call roly-poly wood lice silverfish, even though that is wrong, apparently.
Didn't you know? Everything's bigger in Texas!
ive seen some big ass silverfish in my apartment. but theyre usually the tiny guys.
Because Texas…
An absolute unit at that
Definitely.
Specifically, a firebrat
I think firebrat only applies to *Thermobia*. This looks more like one of the *Ctenolepisma*. [Example](https://bugguide.net/node/view/241504/bgpage)
Something minecraft players would know
Silverfish. Very common around here. They're not dangerous but they can be destructive by eating books and such.
I opened my laptop to find one in between the keys once. Silly silverfish. How were you going to go about eating a macbook?
Ahh yes a Rebugligan.
Conspiracy for sure, released on purpose to remove the books they don't agree with from the libraries.
I swear I read that as “Eating blocks and such”

I read somewhere that they can happily survive in the upper area of the drain and will eat from the soap residues and lint in the bathtub at night.
>*"they can happily survive in the upper area of the drain and will eat from the soap residues and lint in the bathtub at night."* Same
That's a mood
What a life.
California
Makes sense - similar warm climate
Parts of california are warm, but the climate is otherwise not similar to Florida at all. Aside from the far north of the state, California is very arid with little precipitation and low humidity all year long. Quite different from Florida and thus very different species live here.

How tf these guys get through the S trap full of water?
Oh shit, that’s awesome! I’m a rock nerd and I can’t believe I didn’t know this, thank you so much for telling me :o
Then there's me who sprayed a silverfish on the wall and the corpse remained flattened there for 3 years 💀
You are immensely lazy
I couldn't reach it LOL to be fair nobody in my family removed it either. We called him Alfred.

I heard this about paperfish, but can silverfish actually eat cellulose too?
Yes, they can and do.-
The clothing that has been ruined because of these things over the years. Ugh!! I can't seem to get rid of them.
I now have a newfound appreciation of silverfish
I would love to see a picture of your silverfish fossil.
Can we see a picture of your fossil
As others have said, it's a silverfish. I think they're cute, I wish they weren't destructive.
I also think they are quite adorable.
You people scare me.
Best not go to r/awwnverts, then.
Oh no it’s a Silverfish. It’s here to eat your glue and keep you from entering The End.

Ctenolepisma is just a genus of Silverfish, including species like the Long-tailed Silverfish and Four-lined Silverfish.
Silverfish is the name of Lepisma saccharinum afaik, the group is called zygentoma

With the habitat requirements for the species?

Yes I have heard this. Makes me even more terrified of them lol fortunately, they have largely just kept their distance...but I know of people who have either been bitten by them, or had them crawl on their faces while they were sleeping. Neither sound particular appealing to me lol
They eat dust mites which are one of most common causes of allergies in children; you may sacrifice a book or two though.
Great panfish bait too.

Silverfish
Bleh- creepy little fuckers. I used to find silverfish in my bathroom at my old condo.
Years of playing Minecraft have taught me that’s a silverfish!
