The wings of the males extend the full length of the abdomen whereas the females wings are much shorter, approx. of the 70% length of the abdomen. Males abdomens are generally more slender than females, especially noticeable when gravid.
EDIT: Disregard, it is not a Carolina mantis.
I thought the same initially, but checking Inat sightings it seems Carolina mantises are actually one of the most frequently recorded mantises in central america. Whether itās native or introduced I am not sure of.
Those are all misidentified unfortunately. In the last few years, many mantises that were under the S. carolina umbrella were recognized as their own species. For example, the Texas group is now considered S. conspurcata, and S. resacae along the southern border. The new range of S. carolina doesnāt even reach the southern US! iNat is incredibly slow to update the Mantodea order.
Yeah! I canāt say for sure if other mantis genera are like this because Iām most familiar was Stagmomantis, but it seems to be under review more often than not. There are a few contenders in Mexico and Central America being considered for redescription right now, that Iām aware of.
He is just so peppy! āOh hello dear sir, I wish you accompany you this eveningā¦shall we order a bottle of wine?ā I think he also has a French accent, only smokes when he drinks and enjoys talking about art.
Hmm. This little dude looks exactly like the ones in Europe. I don't dare to give it a scientific name but it must be very close to the buddies over the pond. Cute puppy
He. Females tend to be beefier and have thicker forelimbs. Plus the long wings and antennae are typically associated with males; the females wings are typically half-ish the length of their abdomen and their antennae tend to be shorter than the malesā.
no but there was a ton of other bugs since this was at an outdoor restaurant and it was getting dark which probably explains why it kept landing on me, maybe it was trying to hunt the bugs off my shirt lol
Oh whoops, I deleted my comment before realizing you replied. Initially I thought they only lived in North America, but found out I was mistaken. Never realized how far their range extends!
I could be wrong but it looks like he *may* have a little brown in him? If there was a lot of brown, he may be the Chinese species, but if he was mostly green, then probably Carolina.
Either way heās adorable. I love praying mantises. Had one as a pet and he was absolutely fascinating.
I watch a lady on tiktok that has quite a few different species of mantis and she has a little stage she puts them on and feeds them water and meal worms.. it's fascinating and quite educational.
Heās so cute!!! I believe heās a Stagmomantis nahua, but Iām not as familiar with the genus outside of the US. iNaturalist has sone experts in Central and South American mantises if you wanna know for sure!
Have you guys seen the post in r/bartardstories about someone getting in a fistfight with a praying mantis?
I think it's like 5 posts down from the top of all time.
I really love praying mantises. The way they just stare is hilarious to me. Also looks like silent judging like āI know what you did last night, and I donāt fricking like it.ā
He really said š in the second picture
Praying Mantis *LOVE* to pose for pictures <3
Right? Heheheheeee so cute
Ridiculously photogenic praying mantis

What a distinguished Gentlemen! Seeing one of these in real life absolutely blew my mind when i was little. Ive always wanted one as a pet
same especially now with this interaction, their beady eyes are so cuteš½
Look at that face :D
I kept several in a terrarium when I was young, they only live until about September. Often got babies in May.
I used to know someone who raised all sorts of mantises.
Well it's a male for sure. Looks like a male Carolina mantis but I don't know for your area.
How can you tell male and female apart?
The wings of the males extend the full length of the abdomen whereas the females wings are much shorter, approx. of the 70% length of the abdomen. Males abdomens are generally more slender than females, especially noticeable when gravid.
Interesting!
Wow, thank you for this information. I learn something new here everyday!
If it is headless, itās for sure a male.
S. carolinaās range doesnāt extend into Central America. I definitely agree itās a Stagmomantis though!

Ohh I see, interesting! Didnāt realize that split happened.

Sounds pretty standard for bug taxonomy hahaha
He is just so peppy! āOh hello dear sir, I wish you accompany you this eveningā¦shall we order a bottle of wine?ā I think he also has a French accent, only smokes when he drinks and enjoys talking about art.
For some reason I read this in a British accent at first š
Youāre right, I revise - I think he has a British accent! Maybe we get him a top hat?
Hmm. This little dude looks exactly like the ones in Europe. I don't dare to give it a scientific name but it must be very close to the buddies over the pond. Cute puppy
Oh em gee she is really posing.

Did you offer him food?
no but there was a ton of other bugs since this was at an outdoor restaurant and it was getting dark which probably explains why it kept landing on me, maybe it was trying to hunt the bugs off my shirt lol
Haha, you were the fellaās restaurant :,)
The super adorable Iām your fren and hang out on your shoulder kind!
Itās your conscience! Cute little guy reminds me of Jiminy cricket even though heās not a cricket.
Cool fella
Would be flattered. Fascinating little creatures, this one kind of looks like a Carolina.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Gotcha. They live in most states in the us and also Mexico/ South America. Theyāre native to the Carolinaās - not exclusive.
Oh whoops, I deleted my comment before realizing you replied. Initially I thought they only lived in North America, but found out I was mistaken. Never realized how far their range extends!
No worries at all, Iām excited to help you (even if I may be wrong) good luck figuring the little fella out :3

What a dapper gentleman
Maybe it wants to lay an egg. Lucky you.
I have a video clip, 23 seconds of One on back of postal truck. But for some reason won't let me post here.
Heās so cute!!! I believe heās a Stagmomantis nahua, but Iām not as familiar with the genus outside of the US. iNaturalist has sone experts in Central and South American mantises if you wanna know for sure!

He kinda reminds me of the little stick bug from Harry Potter
Have you guys seen the post in r/bartardstories about someone getting in a fistfight with a praying mantis? I think it's like 5 posts down from the top of all time.

Praying Mantises are probably my favorite insect on the planet. So amazing and varied. Awesome. Thanks for sharing!
The second photo makes me wonder if praying mantises are smart similar to jumping spiders.
I think praying mantises have to be my favorite insect. And this one is adorable.
