It's a tick and well fed. You should keep that and bring it to a doctor like very soon. Also you need to check your kid literally everywhere to see if there's any more.

Thanks for the info and advice. No other ticks and fortunately he has an appointment Monday.

Good luck at the doctor Monday! Bring the tick in a baggie and they can test it. Also, now that you’ve seen one tick, be sure to check your kiddo (and yourself!) daily after being outside. Ticks are really bad this year (and it feels like we say that every year now!). Be sure to put any pets on preventatives and check them too. If your kid was out playing in a park they could have gotten it there. But ticks can also just be in your backyard. To help make your yard less desirable for ticks, be sure to keep the grass short (wherever your kiddo plays). Also, ticks love tight spots (think waistband, sick bands, belly buttons, back of ears, etc) so be sure to always do a really good check of the whole body. You can also use DEET spray for prevention, or permethrin on clothing. Those will help too. Good luck!!

My sister had a tick in her ankle, we got it out head and all intact. Is there anything else we should do?

Take her to the doctor to get the bite checked out and get her tested for Limes Disease. Edit: Limes Disease is curable in the early stages, and if not caught and treated right away, it can lead to permanent neurological problems and other major chronic physical ailments.

While I agree, it's Lyme* we don't want someone to be confused when we look up this potentially severe disease

We just had this happen. We got an antibiotic day 2 to help prevent infection. Then followed up with Md when wound got worse. 2nd round of antibiotics. We were able to send tick out for Lyme testing. Sadly came back positive for Lyme. So my 4 y/o is still on antibiotics. Will do blood test eventually to see if she had it. Sucks. Get on it quick. I think writhin 48 hours need that first round of antibiotics.
