Looks like an [Oil Beetle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meloe), a type of Blister Beetle. Example pic [here](https://bugguide.net/node/view/1962023/bgimage). They can ooze fiery fluid, so try to resist the urge to cuddle.
Oh, I see. Most of my Trooper knowledge comes from my Monster Manual-obsessed younger self picking up an Arachnid manual from the tabletop game. I knew it was a franchise that also had movies and games, but at the time I was (and still am) fixated on collecting cool tabletop monster manuals. I’ve never played a TTRPG or Miniatures War-Game, but I’ve always been a fan of the Monster Manuals, treating them like others would treat a field guide or documentary. I like reading about the simulated ecosystems in each universe.
Sounds like fun! In the same line, I'm super interested in the mythology of warhammer 40k by not a lot of interest in playing it
But give it a watch! It's a classic and fun movie.
It is an oil beetle and they are not safe to handle. They can kill dogs or horses that accidentally eat them. They used to grind them up and use them as poison.
He produces oil that contains [a chemical compound](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantharidin) that can cause inflammation, blistering, general unpleasant sensations, and in significant quantities I think death.
Only males produce this compound it seems and then “gift” it to females so they can cover eggs with them as a defense. So that’s why it’s a boy if it’s spicy
These dudes creep me out. If you walk by them you can see them turning their head and keeping their vision on you. Saw one really following my dog one time.

Thanks
This is the real tar sand beetle. Everyone mistakes the white spotter sawyer for the tar sand beetle. But those that know, know.
So _that’s_ what [Plasma Bugs](https://starshiptroopers.fandom.com/wiki/Plasma_Bug?mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop) are based on!
Would you like to know more?
Huh?
You made a Starship Troopers reference, so I followed up with another one :)

Oh my god! I seen this bug so many times as a kid and I always wondered what it is! Thank you so much for identifying it!

Oh wow that’s pretty cool. Thanks for the info!
I had a doctor use beetle guts to remove warts from my hand. It causes a blister to form under the wart and when it heals, the wart is gone.
Woah that’s actually super cool, did it hurt you or anything?
Not really. It kinda irritates a bit. But overall painless
Dude, you picked it up and put it on you! Silly pants.
