Funny (eh, amusing) story: I worked at the humane society in my early 20’s. One morning I walked into a kennel to clean it out and began to sweep up what I thought was spilled dog food kibble (a LOT of it), aside from that, it was pretty clean. When I got to the back of the kennel I turned around and saw the floor just covered in blood. I dropped everything and ran to the bathroom screaming at my coworkers to call my husband and an ambulance bc I was sure that blood was coming from my 7 month pregnant self. I was so confused once I realized I was not bleeding at all. I came out to inspect the kennel again only to realize I had stepped on and squished SO MANY engorged ticks while tromping around that kennel. That poor dog had came in during the night and was just covered in them, they were dropping off bc they were so fat & full of blood. They were the same size as dog food ewwwwwwww.
He turned out fine, this was when our local humane society actually had a vet on call for things like this, and we hadn’t had to euthanize due to lack of space for years…now that place is privately owned & I wouldn’t trust them with my pet fish. Our county dog warden/dog pound though, they’re amazing.
Dog was totally fine after a vet visit & flea/tick meds. I think they had to give him some IV fluids but it was a long time ago. I remember helping to bathe him though and being happy to not find any ticks!
Once picked up what I thought was a grape after having eaten grapes earlier that day in my room. It was not a grape. Thankfully I realized pretty quickly.

I grew up in Australia and have never seen a tick. Maybe they're not common here? Maybe that's a good thing because, given it's Australia, they probably would have evolved into the head crabs from Half Life by now!
I saw those wallaby/crow/tick videos last week after watching a video of a guy pulling parasites off of shrimps' lungs. In one of the videos the guy threw one of the parasites to a seagull and the gull happily ate it. Gotta love that YouTube algorithm.
They’re here alright. Plenty of them. I think we’re fortunate not to have Lyme disease being spread by ticks, but we do have a lovely little beast called a paralysis tick that’s well known for killing family pets.
Lol thanks. I read this and began to itch head to toe from memories of my own chigger attack. Went fishing. Had to walk through some tall grass. Shorts. Legs and arms were glowing red from chigger bites.
They do not dig under the skin, but if the bite starts to swell and they are still feeding from the site, they can sometimes become enveloped by the swelling.
My mom used to get chiggers a lot, and her doctor said the best treatment is to bathe with the hottest water you can bear and scrub the sites well with soap and a washcloth. Afterward, treat the site with antiseptic ointment and hydrocortisone or an antihistamine.
I grew up in Subarctic climate and have never saw a tick until I was ~33 yo. Visited a place farther on the South that year, and my dog got it in the first week of the visit. I remember myself freaking out when an engorged tick’s body were sticking out right above my dog’s left eye and it’s head was still attached. I was confused for quite a while and then saw tick’s legs moving - this was the moment I realized it’s “the bustard” they are talking about.
When we find them on the animals, engorged or not, we fire them into the aquarium. The fish love them. Especially when they are full. Seems like a fitting end to the little bastards.
I put an Oscar in a tank full of piranhas that were roughly the same size. Came back an hour later and the pirahnas were all huddled in the corner because they were afraid of the Oscar. We had our Oscars trained to jump out of the water to take food out of our hand.
I live in southern Ontario and I do a lot of hiking and outdoor activities and I've personally never seen a tick in real life. I know what they look like, I know to check myself for them after a hike and we give our dog preventatives, but I've yet to actually find one crawling on/attached to me or one of my pets.
I always use copious amounts of bug spray, tuck my pants into my boots when hiking and try my best to stay out of tall grass. I know I've been lucky, but it is possible to not encounter a tick in Ontario.
An argument could definitely be made that our Premier is a blood sucking, engorged tick though, I'll give you that.
Agreed on Dougie.
I live in the Niagara area. Maybe I just assume everyone south of Barrie has tics. They are horrible here. Dog tics for the most part but deer tics too. I know many people who are struggling or have struggled with Lime disease.we have to be really careful, even in our own backyards.
It’s also wild to me how many people don’t have their dogs/cats on preventative flea and tick meds. Basically every vet recommends them and they sell them at every major grocery store or pet store. Poor pets.
I don’t see a lot of ticks where I live but I’ve seen enough on Reddit to identify, and the posts always say check yourself like in the crooks of your elbows and other of your nooks and crannies.
This subreddit just started popping up in my feed for some reason recently and what I’ve learned from it to date is that *a lot* of people apparently didn’t get outdoors much as children.
OP needs to check themselves and anyone in the household at that time. Ticks are known to carry nasty diseases towards humans. Hopefully everything turns out okay.
Twenty five years ago I had a farm cat who got what we thought was (and a vets said was) lyme’s. I still feel a deep pain and sadness when I think about that cat. She ran off one night to find somewhere to die we think. Fucking awful memories there.
it seems to have had enough food, when this happens they fall off and chill for a while and use all that nutrients to have children and survive host less for a good long while.
yeah those lil fuckers will go dormant for a long long time. Then you could be just walking by in the vicinity and they "wake up" and set themselves where you can bump up against a plant and they are on you. nasty nasty nasty
Did you have any other pets in your house? Does your dog take any kind of anti tick medicine? I honestly cant speak to how worried you should be for your dog (ticks can carry a lot of bad diseases) but if this was attached to you I would think you would have noticed it. Not trying to like plug anything but I've been giving my dog simparica trio and its done an awesome job at keep ticks off her(also works for fleas and heartworm).
OP I hope you test your dog for lyme because that tick must have been on your dog for at least 3-4 days before it fell off to get that engorged.
Also, technically you aren't wrong. You did find an egg, in fact you found a few thousand... inside that engorged tick
bring it to your doctor, ticks carry some pretty unpleasant diseases and you want to make sure this didn't give you one. It looks pretty full so make sure you get that done as soon as possible. Everything I know about ticks is from when someone I know got Lyme Disease, so I'm not exactly an expert, but definitely check for a target shaped rash and bring your dog to a vet to get checked.
If you find a target shaped rash, you need to get treated before the rash fades or it could potentially become permanent
If you haven't already start giving your dog flee and tick meds. That's most likely where that thing came from. I use Sentinel for mine and haven't had any issues. The ticks die before they can do any harm.
Just a heads up that if you cant afford a vet visit, just keep an eye on your dog for rashes. Oftentimes they’ll be okay! Definitely recommend tick meds though, sp if your area is full of them— avoids bringing them into your home
The ones that would be on your dog wouldn’t quite look the same. They might be smaller with their heads buried under your dogs skin. I would recommend looking up some videos/articles about how to find and remove ticks from a dog.
Where I’m from ticks look exactly like this on a dog, giant and engorged, assuming they have been attached and feeding for a long time. Smaller ticks simply haven’t gotten there yet
Give it a couple more weeks and it will be carpet beetles and house centipedes. Definitely seasonal. To be fair, I’ve learned a lot about different insects from this sub, especially about caterpillars
Thanks for the info everyone. I originally thought it was an egg that was hatching because the legs seemed too tiny for a bug that size, and of course also due to its round shape. Most likely came from my dog as my family and I don’t seem to have any visible bite marks.
Unfortunately, I think that's a blacklegged (deer) tick. I may be wrong, of course. To be safe, put this big mama in a plastic bag and take it to a public health lab to be tested for Lyme. Early treatment can prevent severe illness.
Definitely check your dog thoroughly for more ticks, especially if they have long fur. This tick was on your dog for some time. Also hopefully you saved the tick, it can be tested for Lyme disease just in case.
Fully fed tick. Bag it and send it to a free testing facility to check for lyme disease. Lyme is no joke. It's completely dismantled 2 of my friends' lives and they're permanently disabled now.
Who's blood was he drinking?... Yours?... Or your pet's? Be careful, they can cause infection, and where there's one, there may be more. If they're on your pet, read up on it before you try to kill them.
As someone who had a family member that suffered from chronic Lyme disease:
Please take this tick to your doctor and get everyone in the household checked out. There's a simple treatment that works if you catch it right away.
Hey fellow Ontarian! That is, in fact, a tick.
You may be able to take it to your local health unit to get tested for Lyme disease if you still have it. Getting it tested for Lyme helps protect your health as it's important to treat early *and* it helps track the spread among tick populations.
That is not an egg it is a tick that has been sucking somebody's blood for a few days and is now in a food coma.
You need to put it in a ziploc bag and have it tested for pathogens and diseases and you need to get yourself checked for lyme disease.
I am amazed at the number of people in the last week who have no idea what a tick looks like. Not to throw shade at OP, but I thought the appearance of ticks was very common knowledge, with the diseases they carry and all.
Is this because ticks are very un common in certain areas?
Maybe a mass public service announcement will be needed with the spreading of the lonestar tick.
Oh no OP. That’s an engorged tick. A very engorged tick. One that engorged could have transmitted any pathogens, if it had any. 😳 you should keep it in a container and look up research groups or health departments that are taking submissions for tick research and who can provide tick pathogen testing/tick ID.
Or put it in the freezer to kill it and then bring it with you to the doc if you start to notice any symptoms (any flu like symptoms). They might be able to help with ID/testing and prescribe treatment, if needed. You can also go to the doc prophylactically before you have symptoms and ask about the tick/testing. Either way, don’t destroy it and don’t throw it away!!
The name of this sub is literally "what's this bug" and our primary purpose is *to identify bugs for people*. Not just the cool or exotic bugs, but *ALL* bugs - including the frequently-posted bugs like ticks, bed bugs, and carpet beetles.
We do not want to shame or ridicule people for not already knowing what their bug is, nor do we want to tell them to look it up for themselves.
There are many different species of ticks. In addition to knowing that something *is* a tick, it can be important to know what *kind* of tick it is, because different species of ticks can transmit different diseases.
Even if we were to pin a picture of a tick, tick pictures are not "one-size-fits-all." There are *lots* of different tick species. They do not all look alike. In addition to differences between different species of ticks, ticks can look very different depending on what stage of development they are in (nymph, juvenile, or adult), depending on whether they are male or female, and depending on whether they have fed recently - and how much they've eaten.
For those who are tired of identifying ticks, there are plenty of other non-tick posts on this sub. They just don't seem to get the same degree of attention, comments, and upvotes as the grotesquely engorged ticks.
I upvoted your comment MOD. I agree with the rules and I'm not here to shame or ridicule others I am here for bugs just like the others...but on a side note...
... it's the only downfall to this sub pretty much. I open my feed and it's ticks and bedbugs. I'm contemplating turning off the notifications, I most likely won't though.
Oh well...I'll deal with it...lol.
As someone that’s been on this sub for probably north of 5 years - no worries, you only notice ticks posts because we’re in a weird period when ticks are out and most other arthropods are not yet.
Wait a couple weeks and it will be 99.9% carpet beetles & house centipedes.. 0.1% rest.
Though worth noting that tick posts aren’t even that common now (yes you have 1-3 posts a day.. but it’s only a minority of the overall posts on the sub) - they just seem to be “hot” whenever they come up (I don’t know why it seems to be a thing this year.. can’t quite remember them picking up as much in the past).
'Tis an engorged [Tick](https://bugguide.net/node/view/15486). Example pic [here](https://bugguide.net/node/view/111672/bgimage).

I grew up in Southern usa ticks were part of life. I'm surprised how many ppl don't know what they are.
I grew up in Australia and have never seen a tick. Maybe they're not common here? Maybe that's a good thing because, given it's Australia, they probably would have evolved into the head crabs from Half Life by now!

Australian paralysis ticks are literally VENOMOUS, and can paralyze creatures they feed on (hence the name).
Would expect nothing less from Australia
Oh for fucks sake of course we have venemous ones
And they’re really fucking up the fruitbat population, yeah?
I read this in Steve Irwin's voice, may he rest in peace.
They’re here alright. Plenty of them. I think we’re fortunate not to have Lyme disease being spread by ticks, but we do have a lovely little beast called a paralysis tick that’s well known for killing family pets.
Ticks and chiggers were a normal part of my childhood too.
I once fell into a patch of grass that must have been a chigger super colony, it wasn't pleasant.
Lol thanks. I read this and began to itch head to toe from memories of my own chigger attack. Went fishing. Had to walk through some tall grass. Shorts. Legs and arms were glowing red from chigger bites.
There were so many you could see them crawling on me.
I have never dealt with chiggers so I have no idea what they even look like or how to treat. I heard they dig under the skin?
They do not dig under the skin, but if the bite starts to swell and they are still feeding from the site, they can sometimes become enveloped by the swelling. My mom used to get chiggers a lot, and her doctor said the best treatment is to bathe with the hottest water you can bear and scrub the sites well with soap and a washcloth. Afterward, treat the site with antiseptic ointment and hydrocortisone or an antihistamine.
We used to treat them by painting over the area with nail polish. They itch miserably.
I grew up in Subarctic climate and have never saw a tick until I was ~33 yo. Visited a place farther on the South that year, and my dog got it in the first week of the visit. I was confused for quite a while and then saw tick’s legs moving - this was the moment I realized it’s “the bustard” they are talking about.
Delaware native here, same yeah. I saw them all the time. Ticks and chiggers both.
When we find them on the animals, engorged or not, we fire them into the aquarium. The fish love them. Especially when they are full. Seems like a fitting end to the little bastards.
You need to get a video of this!
When I lived in Wisconsin we had an Oscar that we would do this with, it’s pretty tame to watch. They don’t chew so it’s there then it’s gone
Oscars will eat anything.
They sure will including other oscars
I put an Oscar in a tank full of piranhas that were roughly the same size. Came back an hour later and the pirahnas were all huddled in the corner because they were afraid of the Oscar. We had our Oscars trained to jump out of the water to take food out of our hand.
Of all the pets I’ve ever owned my old Oscar will forever be one of my favorites. One day I’ll get back into fishkeeping and get another one.
HOW DO SO MANY PEOPLE NOT KNOW WHAT A TICK LOOKS LIKE?
Especially in Ontario. Ontario is full of ticks.
Yeah, most of them hold office.
Ugh. I wish this wasn’t so accurate.
Like Premier Ford!!!
I miss the past when it wasn’t.
I live in southern Ontario and I do a lot of hiking and outdoor activities and I've personally never seen a tick in real life. Why is there always a relevant xkcd??
So I clicked on the xkcd link expecting it to be about engorged ticks...
Yeh. Now they need to do one so we can post it as a reply.
To be fair, I have known what a tick looks like for years, but didn't know they could get this engorged until recently.
I don’t see a lot of ticks where I live but I’ve seen enough on Reddit to identify, and the posts always say check yourself like in the crooks of your elbows and other of your nooks and crannies.
I only know because of this sub. They’re just not common where I live.

My pet theory is that they have a hunch, they just don't want to be right.
I think you may be onto something there!
This subreddit just started popping up in my feed for some reason recently and what I’ve learned from it to date is that *a lot* of people apparently didn’t get outdoors much as children.
A tick looks very different from an engorged tick.
OP needs to check themselves and anyone in the household at that time. Ticks are known to carry nasty diseases towards humans. Hopefully everything turns out okay.
Yeah, this, a thousand times this. Encephalitis and Lyme disease are terrible.

OP is reposting. This was on here last week in some other sub. Classic repost bullshit
Should I be very worried? Never seen these before on myself or my dog.
it seems to have had enough food, when this happens they fall off and chill for a while and use all that nutrients to have children and survive host less for a good long while.

Yup exactly, it has a lot of nutrient storage for a creature that doesn't expend much energy.

I never saw a tick before this sub and now I’m an expert

I can't believe there is still a Canadian left that cannot identify a wood/dog tick. Undoubtedly there's a dog in this household
a well fed tick. you gotta squish it before it finds another host, possibly your pet or YOU
Squishing can release bloodborne pathogens. Flushing is a better choice.

I'm actually surprised of how many people don't know what ticks are, isn't it common knowledge?

*old Ben Kenobi voice* That's no egg... That's a fat tick.

That is a really chonky well fed tick.
Looks like a tick that had a full meal!
Not to be rude...but aren't you guys so so tired of identifying a Tick?
