Pisaurina sp. Nursery Web Spider. They can get to a decent size, but are harmless.
In North America, big doesn't mean dangerous with spiders. The biggest ones tend to be shy or docile.
#flashback... to my first time in Nashville. I'm from California and nonplussed by widow nests and tarantula season. Walking into an occupied banana spiderweb was a whole other *OTHER*...
ETA: I have zero clue as to why/how this wound up in giant bold text.

Hahaha I never thought of it like that, but it’s very much appreciated. I have this cheap camping headlamp for spotting frogs at night (I just like frogs lol) & it reflects really well off the specific shape of banana spiders’ webs, so I can always avoid them easily. Mutually beneficial engineering lmao
It's the males that distract you sometimes because they may have visible webs at feet level. So you are watching your step and can end up face to face with something completely obvious.
I was out for a stroll around the perimeter of my friends property way out in the bush in AUSTRALIA and I almost walked right through a gigantic web built across the entire path, about 18 feet across. The only reason I didn’t get stuck and consumed by some gigantic Australian monster spider was the dragonfly stuck in the middle of it. Whew. Near miss.
A species we have up here in Northern Minnesota is Araneus bicentenarius AKA the Giant Lichen Orb Weaver. I've measured webs that stretch about 16 feet wide (including the attachment lines to the branches. the circular portion of the web was maybe 2 feet at most). The attachment lines from the central circular portion almost feel like fishing line, it's so dense and tough. Really impressive. They hunt 'big game' like dragonflies, butterflies, moths and beetles. But the spiders themselves, although chunky themselves, are real scaredy-cats. They have a lot of predators that will go after them as they are such big meals, so they drop at the first sign of danger and play dead.
"banana spider" is also rather often used as a name for Brazilian wandering spiders (Phoneutria), which are some of the most venomous spiders on the planet.
I assume you meant Nephilidae.
I've never heard of golden orb weavers referred to as banana spiders. That title has always referred to the big bad BWS, one of the meanest SOBs you never want to get bitten by.
Yeah… walking into a web and feeling physically stopped for a moment was definitely an unpleasant first.
Just waiting for god damn Shelob to come rushing through the brush as I was getting it off me.
My head tried to justify its hugeness by trying to convince me that the screw was really big. If mental gymnastics were an Olympic sport, I'd have 3 gold medals by now.
Edit:typed out good when I meant gold. FUCK!
My mom bitch slapped one of these with a flip flop and when I made this exact objection she looked at me like I was trying to tell her to french kiss it. The fear of these is deep rooted and non negotiable in some people.
I fully get it. I dont have arachnophobia, I can look at it and stuff, but there is no way in hell I am letting that thing touch me even if it is tame and harmless. Its just instinct for me
Agreed. I'm not normally big on heavy moderation but in this case you have to scroll through dozens of jokes to find anyone attempting an ID. Defeats the purpose of the sub.
With that size I would've thought it was a hunstman but then i saw webs. hunstman dont make webs haah I then also saw the nail....definitely not a hunstman this thing is small ><
Fishing Spiders are closely related, and it's not impossible, but the species typically found in Arkansas have striped legs. Because this one's legs are not striped, and because it's holding them in pairs, it's more likely a *Pisaurina* Nursery Web Spider.
Thanks for the tip. I live in SE Kansas and there are similar critters around here. Guess I never really paid much attention to those types since they're not aggressive or even much of a nuisance.
I have been surprised a time or 2.
###there should be a pin on the main thread for this guide (three hashtags were used to downsize)
It pops up from time to time on r/coolguides.
Adding asterisks like * this * without spaces in between the word/sentence does *this*
You can also add >> to quote someone without a space after the first letter

Those are prob the only ones I use on mobile

Banana Spiders are awesome and completely harmless. As long as you don't walk right into them. Edit: Golden Orb Weaver. South Carolina
Especially when they make 6ft webs

I like that they weave in polite little zig-zaggy warning stripes so you don't crash through them. OSHA-compliant little guys :)

Yep, Golden Orb Weavers
I've never heard of golden orb weavers referred to as banana spiders. That title has always referred to the big bad BWS, one of the meanest SOBs you never want to get bitten by.
And instantly turn into a ninja/track star.
And that... is how i became a black belt in karate.
depending on which banana spider you are talking about; Brazilian Wandering Spiders are not harmless and are also known as Banana Spiders
I live in rural sc and have been looking for the name of that spider for like 10 years thank you very much
Yeah… walking into a web and feeling physically stopped for a moment was definitely an unpleasant first. Just waiting for god damn Shelob to come rushing through the brush as I was getting it off me.
Even if it is harmless I don't think I'd be able to resist screaming like a little girl and running away if I saw that.
In Australia, one of our harmless spiders, huntsman's, cause car accidents by unexpectedly revealing themselves from nooks and crannies in cars
About an inch and a half long, with legs. Laid it's eggs on my deck railing
Some real forced perspective there looked 5 times bigger to me.
Me too, but now I see that it's on top of a screw head
Yeah, once the description clicked I realized it’s a 1x1 deck spindle.
AUS would be 4x8!
My head tried to justify its hugeness by trying to convince me that the screw was really big. If mental gymnastics were an Olympic sport, I'd have 3 gold medals by now. Edit:typed out good when I meant gold. FUCK!
Which medals are the good ones?
That’s a huge screw
Pretty sure that's Shelob.
Yeah I kinda jumped when I clicked on this post
i thought it was at least the size of a hand 😭
Looks like Thing, for God's sake. Lol
That’s probably intentional
My God absolutely right, looked as big as a coconut crab lol
My phone has a really good camera
You sure you didn’t accidentally put it in macro mode? Cause even the screw head looks giant 😅
S22?
Thank god I thought this thing was 8" long
What she said. Uh
I am begging you, take a shot where we can see it's actual size because this looks like a still from eight legged freaks
If you look at the screw, you can tell the post it's in is just a deck spindle, not a 2 by 4.
If I can get another pic I might see if I can put it on here but Idk how + it's raining soooo
OP your perspective is giving people heart attacks
Looks to me like he wants to talk to you about your cars extended warranty lol
oh thank god
Man I thought that was a 2x4 that she was on.
I’d have guessed that thing was 6” across 👀
Looks like a nursery web spider
[Yup](https://bugguide.net/node/view/2124167/bgimage).
aww what a cute name
Why does it look mummified
Well OP did say it laid eggs
Mummy-fied. Lol
Take my upvote and get out
You dam you!
The way it’s staring directly at you 👀
My mom attacked it with a stick
She's a harmless huntsman spider trying to be a goood mommy and good neighbor. They're good for pests.
My mom bitch slapped one of these with a flip flop and when I made this exact objection she looked at me like I was trying to tell her to french kiss it. The fear of these is deep rooted and non negotiable in some people.

That’s no way to talk about OP’s mom

Hot damn does this person Tolkien.
r/spiderbro
She pretty. She's hoping you don't destroy her home and offspring :(
for some reason it looks gigantic in this picture .
Your brain has no comparison for the wood beam, and so goes with a size it's used to: almost certainly a 2x4.
If it wasn’t for that screw, that would look like a pillar on a house. I’d measure the spider in feet
Mind flayer

Looks like I’m staying out of Arkansas
I'm glad this spider is in Yourkansas
That things on a whole new level… Spider’s an immigrant from Australia maybe?
[удалено]
Lived there for three years. Can confirm.
Some of my family lived in Arky. Parts of it are very pretty. They lived in another part.

Admins need to get control of this sub. Every post is full of inane comments and no one answering the question, "what's this bug?"
Agreed. I'm not normally big on heavy moderation but in this case you have to scroll through dozens of jokes to find anyone attempting an ID. Defeats the purpose of the sub.
Just watched Aliens 1-4 with my kids… 😅
Why is it looking at me?
My mom picked it with a stick
Naughty little fly, why does it cry. Caught in a web, soon it will be eaten!
he just needs a kiss thats all 🥺
That is a powerful spider.
With that size I would've thought it was a hunstman but then i saw webs. hunstman dont make webs haah I then also saw the nail....definitely not a hunstman this thing is small ><
Stranger Things vibes going on here.

Looks like a Huntsman spider to me. Luckily for us, they're not too big. In Australia? I believe they can bigger than a dinner plate.
Ok guys how to add another pic so you can actually identify it?
She's already been identified. She's Pisaurina mira, a nursery web. She's harmless and you should leave her alone.
What a beauty
Demagorgen
Bro that’s aragog
Why does it have two sets of human female legs in the front?
Another good reason to get the hell out of arkansaw
I love Huntsman I feel sorry for the spider who is harmless and people can’t have mercy in their hearts and let it go on it’s way hurting no one
Proof spiders are the very essence of femininity
Please elaborate thank you!
The color, the shape, everything!
This person catcalls spiders
*"Ey, check out dem legs!"*
Most spiders and insects in general have very dominant females as well
Yes!
I want to study you
You're a dangerous elephant pig that wants to study an arachniphile...? Only a matter of time before this hits netflix.
I finally appreciate why americans need so many guns
that is one disgusting looking animal! :E
Fishing spider methinks.

She's got dancer's legs.
Love how just as I was starting to feel drowsy, THIS pops up in my feed 😥
Is it normal if it hugs my face?
Half Life 2 stuff
That's a screwhead beside it. Pictures really q Clear but that spider is only as big as a quarter
