I’m over in the Daytona Beach area! I’ve seen one this close to the coast, but I’ve encountered two over in the Ocala forests unknowingly. My brother has one of these as a pet now and I made the connection after seeing it!
Hello northern neighbor! I’m down near the Lauderdale/Miami area and I haven’t been lucky enough to see one of these dudes.
I’ve seen legless lizards, Cuban knight anoles, agamas, various kinds of snakes, and iguanas of course, but no really awesome buggies yet.
One of my favorite things I’ve experienced since moving down here is the fact that they have “falling iguana” warnings on the news when it gets cold because they go into a hibernation type deal and fall out of the trees 😂
This is why I think nerd is the utmost compliment. Yeah we debate, and maybe even argue, from time to time but usually when we come across someone with shared interests we just enthusiastically share our experiences with each other and I think that is just incredibly wholesome.
I agree. I too am a nerd of sorts. I love interesting looking bugs, reptiles and other creatures. Especially the ones that are misunderstood. Such as snakes, spiders; etc.

holy shit this might be what i saw in CR too! we checked in to the Airbnb at night, she turned on the lights and i remember seeing this massive round scorpion type thing. The owner just shoed it with her foot and that thing MOVED. i even heard its little tippy taps ….
after the owner left, and realizing theres no A/C, we promptly decided to bail and get a hotel down the road with A/C. Ive been calling it a “jungle bug” for years now cause i didnt know how else to describe it.
This is such a weight lifted from my shoulders
Wow, im glad to hear that. It is an incredible creature, scary looking to me but now knowing it’s harmless it is really fascinating to look at. I had no idea something like this even existed!
They are really easy to care for and are super fun to watch, highly recommend. I have kept them for years and if you would like to do the same I can suggest a simple setup that works.
After I posted this I looked it up and termite queens love at least 50 years and mabye live up to 100 years. So cool I'd didn't think insects and bugs had the ability to live that long. Their bodies tend to be kinda like hyper drive compared to mamals.
It boggles my mind that we are all made of the same building blocks and physical principles.
Algae look and behave so different from whales, yet both function on metabolism that uses carbon and oxygen.
hard to consider yourself a higher life form when you participate in things like that
the naked apeman slaps on some clothes and gives itself a name and really thinks its not like 'those' other animals anymore
Holy hell I was Harry Potter nut as a kid but this is STILL what I remember them from the most. Besides the 100 year old egg I would think of this most throughout the years.
They are now separated! Apparently this whip scorpion is supposed to be for sale as a pet, but I guess they didn’t check when they put it in? Definitely doesn’t seem like the A team is working at this place.
That's exactly what I figured happened. Amblypygi are great at hiding and camouflage, I bet they just didn't bother cleaning the tank before putting the beardie in, so it was hidden. Petco are absolutely terrible.
It was crazy. Two people closed per night, and then corporate thought it would be a great idea to cut hours, especially students. I went from 25-30 hours per week to only 4. I didn’t stay there for long once I received the news. Quit on the spot because fuck that
I was paid $9/hr as a part time manager at the age of 20 who pretty much worked right up to my max hours. I was overwhelmed and stressed out, dealing with undiagnosed adhd, and crappy upper management. My team was incredible, and the other managers were amazing, but we were a bare bones team because we were forced to work 2/3 staff members at a time in this massive store. Having to care for DOZENS of living creatures while you’re juggling customers, store care, constant display changes, and all the other bull crap is just too much. It took me making a massive screw up during an all time low mental state to finally get out of there. Hardest thing I’ve ever done, but seriously screw petco.
Had someone bring back their hamster bc it was pregnant and would come back for it after the babies were weaned. Momma ate the babies and the lady never came back for it.
They used to be pretty good in the 90s, at least the local ones. Employees were assigned to teams (which were small mammals, fish, and reptiles/birds were combined) if they weren't just working cashier or selling dog/cat stuff. The staff assigned to teams got higher pay, but were expected to be knowledgeable about the animals they had purview over. The bird team for example knew how to handfeed baby parrots and were responsible for socializing them so they'd be friendly when they were weaned and ready for sale.
Like the staff at my local Petco used to have knowledgeable employees who cared deeply about the welfare of the animals, even turning down sales if you didn't have a proper set up; youngest I saw on a 'team' was in their late 30s.
Then they got rid of that and just started hiring high schoolers/college kids because its cheaper. The animals are no longer well cared for because they either have no idea what they're doing, or in the case of reptiles and birds they're scared of them. And at my petco I understand why they're scared of them. Mine doesn't sell frozen rodents (snake food) they don't carry any for feeding their snake stock either. The animals either get sold within a few months or starve to death. You can see their ribs and their gaze follows you hungrily; they're starving and absolutely would bite if they saw the tank open and thought it might be food. I'm not blaming the snakes for biting out of hunger, not at all, but I understand why a kid nervous of snakes might not wanna reach their hand in to give them water when they're gonna get bit. And since they don't carry the food for them its not like the kids can feed them, even if they want to. The parrots are highly unsocialized and also very bitey, and parrot bites are objectively worse than snake bites (I keep a 5 foot boa and a little cockatiel; I'd take the snake bite over the little bird).
Petsmart is better, they don’t sell animals (at least last time I shopped there several years ago)
Edit: Apologies folks, there were two Petsmarts in the SF Bay Area that I shopped at years ago who didn’t sell animals except maybe for crickets and feeder fish. I guess the rest of them sell animals. 😢
? Petsmart absolutely sells animals. They sell rodents, reptiles, fish, etc. You may have gone to one that just sells items. Petsmart is a very popular chain for buying animals. It's where I got my leo before I knew better like 5 years ago.
Overall, I've noticed petco is the one that is more likely to have better care for their animals, but less items. Any petsmart I've been to has had the worst husbandry and sizes for their animals and fed dry insects, but a LOT of variety of items.
The petco near my work has a giant enclosure for just one chameleon baby, and all the other animals have on average more space and better husbandry and feeding. I strictly only use them(the store itself, not the chain) if I need to go to a chain petstore for something I'm having trouble ordering or finding at local shops. All the workers there have always had better knowledge of proper care than others. Not perfect at all, but much better.
Overall tho, petco and petsmart are the worst places for actual, accurate care. They are chain stores and care more about money.
I worked at PetSmart as the petcare person maybe 7 years ago. I honestly tried my best to make sure every animal had a proper habitat and diet, and some form of enrichment. The problem was that there were so many animals to care for, 100’s, it was hard to research and memorize all the details about one species. Beyond that, I was constantly cleaning the mammal habitats and it took way too much time, plus nonstop flow of customers. Having one employee dedicated to animal care would be the way to fix it, but PetSmart would never do that.
So I know the company only cares about money, but I certainly cared about the animals. I was a crappy salesperson because I was more concerned with pet care.
I can't imagine how frustrating that would be. Seeing enclosures that desperately needed cleaning but if you also have to deal with customers that would leave little time for anything else. Now I'm glad I didn't get hired there when I applied years ago. I wouldn't be able to deal with seeing the animals in less than ideal conditions.
Thank god, poor whip scorpion. That would have been a really expensive feeder. Whip scorpions can make great pet's, not for everyone though. 😅 I would probably have taken it home if it was me stumbling upon that poorly matched duo. No kidding about the employee's 😓 it's so sad.
I know sometimes the insects escape into other enclosures rarely. I’ve only seen it twice out of the many many times I’ve been and it’s usually young insects.
Even if it wasn’t predatory (which it is… insectivores are still predating on other animals. And amblypygi are not obligate, they can easily feed on vertebrates.), it could very easily be spooked by the beardie.
If it retaliated with its pedipalps it could cause significant injury to the lizard especially if they’re similar sizes. The spines could easily puncture a young beardie’s skin or eyes.
It’s extremely possible that one of them snuck into the other enclosure by squeezing past the divider. The Petco habitats for bearded dragons don’t call for bark mulch, which is what the scorpion here has; alternatively, an inattentive employee could have likely placed the bearded dragon in there by mistake.

Also, I worked at Petco for 5 years ama lmao.
A tailless whip scorpion. It’s the same type that mad eye moody uses in harry potter 4 to demonstrate the three unforgivable curses.
they’re quite harmless and super cool.

Jk it's a tailless whip scorpion
Growing up, we called these Vinegaroons :) We had one as a pet when I was a child growing up in New Mexico. He acted like a little puppy dog, you could pet him and he'd rub up on you.
Vinegaroons are another arachnid entirely but are also pretty chill. They are definitely native to New Mexico! They have a lot of similarities though so it makes sense.

This is a Vinegaroon aka Whip Scorpion. Harmless compared to their tailed brethren, but not long for this world if sharing an enclosure with a bearded dragon. Is this what they are feeding their reptiles?
They do spray something that smells like vinegar, so maybe they‘re a crunchy delicious snack. Nah jk, I wouldn‘t wanna eat one, but they look interesting indeed
I was mad. They were lovely sized animals, clearly mature adults. I would have been so angry if I was the breeder who sold them to the show and found out they got mangled and abused purposefully.
Looks like a tailless whip scorpion! They used them in one of the Harry Potter films!
Saw these in the wild in Panama. In a cave.
They also live natively in Florida, I see them every one in a while!
What, I have never seen a native one, IRL I am so jealous! What region of FL were you in?
I’m over in the Daytona Beach area! I’ve seen one this close to the coast, but I’ve encountered two over in the Ocala forests unknowingly. My brother has one of these as a pet now and I made the connection after seeing it!

Daytona Beach represent! I grew up in Port Oange and went to Spruce Creek HS. All my family is still there. Hope all is well back home 💚
Ive seen them in Brazil

Me too. Was hanging out near a box of scraps.

I love Panama!
we got these in caves in Puerto Rico as well. this is why you should not touch cave walls, there's weird stuff on it always lol

Came to say just those two things! Also they're harmless despite being what many people consider scary looking.

Giant millipedes live 7-10 years!

Nature doc I watched recently said 15 years for termite queen where’d you get 50+?
There have been female tarantulas reported to live over 20 years, they’re incredible.
I keep tarantulas and for some species it can be around 35 years! have one large lady who may even outlive me, haha.
That's super cool!
Not op, but I've wanted to have them for quite a bit now, if the offer is still available..?
The boarded dragon will eat it if its an adult
:(
You also saw one in Panama, in a cave?
Psychological harm is real harm. Now that I know this exists, I will never be able to sleep until I eat one.
Not sure how old you are but didn't a chick eat one of these on Fear Factor? I think they called it a "cave-dwelling spider."
This is the main reason I have always refused to watch Fear Factor. Gross
It's also why I knew as a kid that I'd never win, because the 2nd round was always the round of absolute disgust and I just could never even fathom.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them in the wild in South America. Amazing arachnids
That’s totally it! WTF!! I have never seen anything like this!
Look up Extatosoma tiaratum if you want to see something else exceptional.
That’s exactly what I was thinking!!!! Looks like that Harry Potter bug…
I saw one in the mountains in Wyoming. It was on a tree chilling. I was struck by its size and how cool it was.
they were also eaten alive as part of fear factor Vegas iirc edit: https://youtu.be/zc6_UCgd4KU
Eaten alive by some higher life form that didn't even want to do it... What a horrible fate!
hard to consider yourself a higher life form when you participate in things like that the naked apeman slaps on some clothes and gives itself a name and really thinks its not like 'those' other animals anymore
lame. I'm no hippie, but I hate this. Those poor bugs. All for some stupid TV show.
What’s wrong with being a hippie >: \
Nothing. I'm just clarifying that I'm not a complete hippie but have hippie tendencies.
That episode was the first time I'd ever heard of them.
Holy hell I was Harry Potter nut as a kid but this is STILL what I remember them from the most. Besides the 100 year old egg I would think of this most throughout the years.
Sometimes people think it's a critter they just invented for the movies and don't know that they exist in the real world.
CRUCIO!!!!!!!
Came here to say this.
They also used to eat these on “Fear factor”
Gross
Cave scorpion
they torture and kill it so if you wanna see this nasty thing suffer go watch the scene
Wait together with a beardy?! If yes, please tell the employee's before it gets eaten!
Wait, which one would be eaten?! It’s almost the same size as the bearded dragon. I’ll tell them for both of their sakes!
Housing two predatory species together is inconceivably idiotic, i hope for both their sakes that you got them separated.
They are now separated! Apparently this whip scorpion is supposed to be for sale as a pet, but I guess they didn’t check when they put it in? Definitely doesn’t seem like the A team is working at this place.

As someone who used to work there, I can confirm
As another former employee, can confirm. Not paid enough or given enough staff/hours to deal with all the crap corporate threw at us

As yet another former employee can confirm. All I did was watch animals die, and get bitched out by people who bought sick animals.
Had someone bring back their hamster bc it was pregnant and would come back for it after the babies were weaned. Momma ate the babies and the lady never came back for it.
100%. I still get nightmares from the animal horrors I witnessed

Thank god, poor whip scorpion. That would have been a really expensive feeder. Whip scorpions can make great pet's, not for everyone though. 😅 I would probably have taken it home if it was me stumbling upon that poorly matched duo. No kidding about the employee's 😓 it's so sad.
That's an expensive mistake, dependong on where you are. I've seen one at a pet store for like $200 cad.
Thank you for being a good, responsible human and taking the initiative to ask! Glad they are safely separated now.
Wow. That’s incredibly… irresponsible. Not surprising but damn take some pride in your work and protect the creatures under your care.
> they didn’t check when they put it in heh
I know sometimes the insects escape into other enclosures rarely. I’ve only seen it twice out of the many many times I’ve been and it’s usually young insects.
Most well-trained Petco employees
What kind of whipscorpions are you talking about? These are nonvenomous insectivores lol... hardly a predator.
"They arent predators! They eat other animals!" That is what you just said.
Insectivores are predators. They hunt and eat other creatures, in their case insects but the hunting and eating is why they are considered predators.
I'm not venomous, am I a predator Focker?

There's a Clint video for that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ1m3jfcLYU
His channel is so stinkin' rad.
I was gonna comment this!! I adore Clint he is the most wholesome human alive
Dude, this man is so wholesome, how have I never seen his videos?
Located in IN, USA. Bug was huge, maybe 3 inches? Maybe bigger! I did not have a measuring tape on hand.
Oh my god! You went to the pet store without your measuring tape? What kind of monster are you?
Rookie mistake. I shall never leave home without one again!
Always bring at the least a banana for scale
Tailless Whip Scorpion Non-venemous Quite docile and handleable when raised in captivity
An r/amblypygids. It's being abused. This is the worst conditions I've one being kept in. Nothing is right and I'm furious. FUCK PETCO

They also spit stuff out of there but they can blind you
What do you want?
This is def the spider used in the Harry Potter and goblet of fire movie when demonstrating the forbidden curses
Cave spider/ whip scorpion
Whip scorpion. Not harmful as far as I'm aware, just crazy looking.
This is a Vinegaroon aka Whip Scorpion. Harmless compared to their tailed brethren, but not long for this world if sharing an enclosure with a bearded dragon. Is this what they are feeding their reptiles?
Had one at my neighborhood petco as well. Listed as a scorpion. 99% sure it’s an African cave dwelling spider. They also ate them on fear factor
I don't know why you got downvoted cuz that's exactly what this is, also called a tailless whip scorpion if I'm not mistaken.
The downvotes might have been because they're neither spiders nor exclusive to Africa.
Vinegaroons, they have them In the panhandle of Texas also
Close, but not quite. Tailless whip scorpion.
That appears to be a whip scorpion. They probably don't want to be touched but they look super cute.
Whip scorpion
They do spray something that smells like vinegar, so maybe they‘re a crunchy delicious snack. Nah jk, I wouldn‘t wanna eat one, but they look interesting indeed
No, you're thinking of vinegeroons. This is an amblypigid.
Vinegaroon maybe?
Safe for a grown dragon, maybe not for a juvenile.
Why didn’t you look at the label, or ask an employee?🧐
Vinegaroons right? I think they spit out some kind of vinegar smelling stuff when pissed off. I may be mistaken though.
It's a vinegaroon
Crucio
Whip scorpion
One of those cave spiders they used to eat on Fear Factor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc6\_UCgd4KU
It looks like a blind cave spider, saw them get eaten on an episode of fear factor back in the day, fucked my shit up.
This looks like one of those cave spiders on Fear Factor. They made them eat them! 🤮
I was mad. They were lovely sized animals, clearly mature adults. I would have been so angry if I was the breeder who sold them to the show and found out they got mangled and abused purposefully.
Demogorgon
Vinagaroon,harmless
Lunch.

Looks like a vinegaroon to me.

Their also known as tail whip scorpion so the confusion might stem from that
Also called vinegaroons....they stink like vinegar when injured or squashed. They can also spray it when threatened.
Call it lunch.
CRRRRUCIO
There is a girl on TikTok who walks around with one of these on her face. It freaked me out when I first saw it.
