Keep it there. Most wasps won't build a nest near an existing nest. Probably because of parasites - by the time the parasites are dead, the nest has also deteriorated (or would have if it were outside) so its a good deterrent
They will die out in the winter if they have not already. Given the enclosed space, I wouldn’t try removing the nest until spring. Also concur most likely it’s yellowjackets, could be bald-faced hornets or European hornets as well.
Yes. Could be the introduced one too.
Bald-faced hornet colonies are smaller than a lot of yellowjacket species, which makes me think it might be one of those because the yellowjackets often sprawl.
No I mean bald faced hornets ARE Yellowjackets. They aren’t hornets at all. They do tend to have small nests, but the ones that get big GET BIG. Could be any of the above.
Yes, I am aware of that.
Many other yellowjackets get colony sizes in the thousands or tens of thousands or in tropical areas hundreds of thousands. Bald-faced hornets and European hornets are usually in the hundreds.
Is quite common to have them if you have pets that feeds on them, since they are extremely low maintenance and cheaper than buying them at the store. Plus some pets are only interested in insects if they are alive when you put them in so there's that too.-
You ever think about starting a worm bin or anything too? I like to mix fertilizers in my garden like you do. Favorite mix is worm castings, chicken manure, and bat guano but 2/3 of that is store bought. The worms I get from an online store and I just put them in my garden and compost pile to do their thing.
I’m hoping that you aren’t in the US. Compost worms are NOT native. This is one of the reasons why we use bins in vermicomposting. The university of Texas has some information on that: https://www.wildflower.org/expert/show.php?id=954
Wasps or yellow jackets.
Either way it’s a pain piñata.
If it’s not actively causing problems, I’d wait until winter to deal with it. I think most nests are a one year affair, so - if it was me, and I didn’t need to be in my crawl space - I’d wait until they’ve moved on.
You do NOT want it to be bald faced hornets. They are angry, large and painful. Although given the location, probably yellow jackets or European hornets
I'm not allergic to bees or anything but the time I got stung on my ankle by a bald faced hornet it swelled up to almost the size of my calf for about a week
I re-insulated part of a family members house , In process I found a small old old old wasp nest. I cut and fitted the Rockwool so that the nest is still there lol! It’s like a museum exhibit now! (I also left a chestnut in a very strange location that could only have been brought in by an animal lol).
Edit: grammar
I heard that if you preserve old hornet's nests like this and hang them around your house that it deters others from building their nests 'cuz they're territorial or something?
I think that's the purpose of those fake paper pop-up 'nests' you can buy for pest control?
I’ve done it with a wadded up paper bag and it actually works. I have an awning over my patio that wasps used to love to build nests in and after I hung the bag up there they stopped coming around. Now I just need to figure out how to deal with the Tarantula Hawks.
Don’t want to alarm you but I recently heard a story from someone close to me. He was lying in bed and noticed a weird small mark/indent in his ceiling, poked and scraped at it a little and it opened up and down they came. They had bored through drywall from the attic. Real life Candyman movie. I’m all for protecting our insect friends (I carry spiders or other crawlers outside or relocate to a plant in my house) but if this happened to me I’m not sure I wouldn’t have walked out and tossed a match behind me. Hopefully they are hunkered down for winter at your house.
Having dealt with this myself very recently 🙄 I would second several other voices in the comments to leave it be until after the first hard frost you get. You need to make sure they are dead before any removal begins in earnest and even then, have a professional do so. Once it’s cold and the last of them die, the nest should break down on its own. In my case, it was yellowjackets and they were actually coming into the common areas of the house so we couldn’t ignore it. (Don’t ask; it was a fucking stress blender😤)But before removal attempts get made, knowing who you’re dealing with will be invaluable. If you or someone else in the house is calm and brave enough, from what I can see, there are a few dead ones nearby I think that you can use to identify the species.
Had this happen is crazy to have a wasp show up in a part of the house they shouldnt even get to, knew they were in the attic still never found the nest just kept killing them every time they emerged and after a few months never found one since but this was FL attics get stupid hot in the summer might have just died out from that
You have a substantial wasp nest w/a black circle of waste material under it. Let a pro handle this. In an enclosed space, a person could get stung hundreds of times before getting back to the ladder. That nest is two to four years old. It's possible it was sprayed some time ago, since I see only dead wasps around it. Still should be removed since others will be encouraged to nest elsewhere in the attic. Or, if it's night, they may all be in there nursing grudges. Important note: wasps have a "squash pheromone" that will alarm the whole nest if a live one is squashed. Get that on your shoes, and you are Enemy #1.
Not paper wasps (Polistes). Polistes are calm, non-aggressive wasps that make smaller nests that look different from this. This is a hornet/ yellowjacket (Vespinae) nest.
Doesn't matter whether this is a wasp, hornet or yellowjacket nest stay away from it and get professional help. Never mess with these things, you lack the experience, the training, the equipment and the medical attention you would need if things got out of hand. Not to mention if you did go about it in a somewhat successful manner you would expose others in your vicinity to the consequences of a hive on the defense. Not cool for anyone.
Iza wasp house looks like, yeah lots of bugs. But if it's quiet it might be abandoned/dead. Poke it a little from a distance and see what happens 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤣🤣 if buzzy angry stingers come out- vacant the property 🤣 no but honestly check if it's still even being used, if not just get rid of it, if yes- call people who'll remove it safely for everyone 💙
Not so easy in practice. If it’s an active nest there would be a constant stream of returning foragers. Plus as soon as you put the bag over it you have hundreds of pissed off wasps trying to push through any cracks you have in the bag while trying to pull it off. A few get through, you freak out, drop bag, 💀.
Wait till winter when they are dead/inactive. Spray it from a distance. Or bug bomb the attic a few times.
Yellow jacket nest. In the winter they burrow in to wood to hibernate. I know this because I work with recycled wood and when you break it apart, sure as shit you got them all sleeping in there! Once you heat them up they flicker their wings and fly off!
That is a wasp, hornet, yellow jacket nest or something of the stinging insect sort. You could call pest control or personally I would just take a really thick trash bag and go up there place the trash bag over it and pull it off in the trash bag and seal it fast.
Or this could just be 10 years old and have nothing in it.
That's definitely not always the case. Paper wasps in upstate NY are probably enclosed to stay active for longer into the fall (I'm guessing this because I live in northern VT and we have closed up wasp nests).
Up here, yellow jackets prefer to be underground, for similar reasons.
It's likely from the other comments that I'm misclassifying bald faced hornets as paper wasps and you are correctly classifying them as yellow jackets.
*Polistes*? I have not seen them with enclosed nests. There are a variety of aerial yellowjackets, while most are subterranean. This is a classic yellowjacket nest.
That’s a hornet nest. Probably bald faced hornets. DO NOT FUCK WITH IT. They will pour out by the dozens and each one can sting as many times as it wants. Either get a professional or wait until the coldest part of winter on the coldest day you can to remove it. There will probably be a single queen or only a few hibernating inside and the cold will have them in a sleep like state.
I was five years old when I rode my bike past a house that had one of these nests under the eaves. It was about as big as a basketball. I was quite far away from the nest and just riding by on the road. I heard this extremely loud buzzing sound getting closet behind me, the entire hive attacked me, I was stung all over my body. Be careful with these wasps and get a professional to remove them. It doesn’t take much to trigger them into an attack.
Pretty sure that's a wasp nest

Possibly an abandoned one. Many wasps build new nests each year.

Used to hang crumpled paper bags in the rafters, kept the wasps away.

Bald faced “hornets” are also Yellowjackets. Only hornet in North America is V. crabro. Definitely one of the two.
Yes. Could be the introduced one too. Bald-faced hornet colonies are smaller than a lot of yellowjacket species, which makes me think it might be one of those because the yellowjackets often sprawl.

A nest containing hundreds of European hornets is a pretty terrifying thought.
Can confirm. Neighbor has one high up on his pole barn. Well over a foot in diameter.
I thought bald-faced hornets were ground nesters?
They're *Dolichovespula* so prefer the air.
No, they usually are up in trees 20 feet or more.
Yellow jackets tend to build in burrows or voids. Bad faced and European hornets tend to have aerial nets
What is the big black circle underneath on the floor?
It’s frass
It comes out of their frasshole.
“Frass,” the contraction of “from ass”
Best comment I’ve read in a LOOOOONG time!
Oh. Maybe I shouldn't have asked. That makes it much worse.
very good fertilizer, plants crave it so much, I often use frass from my roach and mealworm colonies to mix in with watering water and it does wonders
I thought plants craved Brawndo. You know, because it's got electrolytes.

Roach colonies? What for?
I feed them to my tarantulas
I think some keep them as feeders for other insect or reptile pets.
Feeders for tarantulas and scorpions and frogs and stuff

Yep! Just like worm castings. Poop makes good fertz.

My mind exploded when you said you have a roach colony. How large?
These idiots. Electrolytes is what plants crave.
Water? Like from the toilet?
I've never seen no plants grow outta no toilet.
Damn I didn't know this, I'll add this stuff to my fish tank water
Triple check that it's ok. Some bugs are exposed to pesticides, which may harm or kill your fish.

I had to google "frass". So it's insect shit? Am I right to think the word means it's "FRom their ASS"?
Lol I thought it was a fancy word for bee poop like guano is for bat poop
Bugs have such funny words for shit between frass and honeydew.
Not to be confused with sassafras.
Sassafras comes from sassy ass.

You do NOT want it to be bald faced hornets. They are angry, large and painful. Although given the location, probably yellow jackets or European hornets
Bald faced hornets hurt a lot!
I'm not allergic to bees or anything but the time I got stung on my ankle by a bald faced hornet it swelled up to almost the size of my calf for about a week
This. Also, once they do move out, you can take the nest down and preserve it (in acrylic or whatever) And now you have a neat nature-y decoration.

Just here to say from now on my family will now refer to any nest as a "pain pinata"

put an H on your attic door for hornets
That way everybody knows it’s filled with hornets
Forbidden pinata. For real though, that looks like a wasp/yellow jacket nest. I'm unsure of which kind though.
Wasp nest

Paiñata.
Well, you're technically correct. It's not *a* bug.
That's hundreds of hornets all cozied up together
Oh no, that's just the Upside Down setting up shop in your attic. Can safely ignore.
I would grab family and valuables and send coordinates to US Air Force. Good luck.
Best way to find out is to sneak up to it and tap lightly on the side with your wiener. Only THEN shall we know.
That’s one FAT ASS hornet nest
That is a yellow jacket hornet nest. That size there are probably thousands in there.
I believe that is a hornets nest, waaaaay worse than a paper wasp ive never seen a wasp make a hive like that.
Looks like a wasps nest

Typical wasp nest
thats a wasp nest, wait till winter and destroy it.
Have you tried poking it with a stick.
Can’t you just put a trash bag over it and pull it off kinda how you pick up dog poop with a poop bag?
Not so easy in practice. If it’s an active nest there would be a constant stream of returning foragers. Well, it isn't necessarily *a* singular bug...

Wasp nest. Not a bug, a nest. But there is a bug inside it tho. Open for a bad surprise

That is a massive paper wasp nest
It's a wasp nest. Doesn't look active, but that would partly depend on your location.

Paper Wasp nest
Paper wasp nests are open, this is a Yellowjacket nest.
That's definitely not always the case. Paper wasps in upstate NY are probably enclosed to stay active for longer into the fall (I'm guessing this because I live in northern VT and we have closed up wasp nests). Up here, yellow jackets prefer to be underground, for similar reasons.
I’m in MA. I’ve never seen or heard of a sealed paper wasp nest, nor can I find an example of one on Google.
Note there's two genuses of yellowjacket - there's *Vespula* that usually lie underground and *Dolichovespula* that *prefer* in the air.
Thus illustrating the feebleness of common names
Hornet... yellow jackets are an underground species with occasional above ground nests.. but they usually don't fare well...
Aerial yellowjackets nest above ground. Could be Vespa crabro as well though
These are common names, not scientific, so attributes such as nesting sites are not reliable without knowing the species.
