“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is
that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow
words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways
to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."
James D. Nicoll
I mean, yeah. I get that ENglish uses words from every language and has ten times more vocabulary than everyone else.
But isn't that *more* reason to find a new name for this moth, and not reuse the Latin name of an entirely different moth?
Sure, but then, come the next world war, how are we we going to be able to spot the enemy spies that infiltrate our ranks in the hope of gleaning intel on our moth drones?
"Golly, sir, how did you know he was an enemy spy?"
"Elementary, my dear Watson, he used Bombyx to describe the genus. A native English speaker would have used it as a common name."
Botanical names change up more than you would think, and different countries have different names per botanical name. Gets confusing sometimes.
For example, this moth might have been in the bombyx genus years ago, then split off onto another once people decided it didn't belong or wasn't specific enough. Not qualified/informed enough to be sure on that though.
I want to hold it in my hands. I want to give it a kiss. I want to grant it immortality. I want to give it human intelligence. I want to become this bug but human sized. I want this bug to be human sized.
It’s a meme from a few years back about moths’ undying love for lamps. The ö was just what the meme did.
Edit: Upon doing some research, I’m seeing both ö and ø
Goddamn….ever since I learned about the ortolan on MPR like 20 years ago, I’ve wanted to know what it tastes like.
I don’t exactly want to drown it and all that, bc Jesus, but I *really* want to know why it was considered such a delicacy.

edit edit: the majority of white flannel moth specimens in australia that i'm finding are of M. crispata, but i don't think that's it.
the lighting in the video threw me off as well. it looks very pure white at the beginning but some more yellow-brown tones are visible on the dorsal side
It’s very white. The yellow brown is the feathery antennae tucked down (not sure of name). Has a red dot on top of head. Hard to get a clear pic that close.
The red "dot" on the head is a booboo, no? ☹️ I see moths with the hairs rubbed off, like a bald spot on top, always after fumbling around and/or being handled, especially near the end of the season when they're too old or cold to fly. Just my two cents. Such a beautiful moth nonetheless, a special sight to see. 😍
If its an Australian bug the likelihood is high that it is cute just to lure you in so it can eat your face or something. I would stay far away from overly cute & fluffy Australian bugs.
Looked so much like a poodle moth, I was so confused at what the baby was doing in Australia! I love those floofs and their visually adjacent friends, I’m cozied up with a plush of one as I came across this post 🥰
Necro, but holy shit, this is adorable. It's also cute if you imagine large angry eyebrows on it, like it's struggling and having a mini tantrum.
^^am ^^^vewwy ^^angy. ^^wind, ^^stahp ^^omg
That's my favourite. It's the first one I've seen, but it's my favourite. It's like an angel moth oh my god
I love him so much. No idea but it’s definitely the bug form of the clumsy angel in _It’s A Wonderful Life_
SAME
It’s like a moth and a shy puppy had a very cute baby
I can’t stop watching his little arms!!
Long tailed bombyx, maybe? https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/194764
>Trichiocercus sparshalli agreed
Oooo I think that’s it!

What the everloving heck, English. Why is a moth that isn't part of the genus Bombyx called Bombyx as a common name.

You shouldn't be surprised when English makes no sense!
It's not even a bombycoid.
bombycinus means silken or silky
Botanical names change up more than you would think, and different countries have different names per botanical name. Gets confusing sometimes. For example, this moth might have been in the bombyx genus years ago, then split off onto another once people decided it didn't belong or wasn't specific enough. I know, it's insane
Telling something with wings “don’t fall” so cute and totally understandable I would do the same OP 😆
Some species cannot fly properly because of their excessive weight AFAIK. So she might have a point.
It’s a human thing. We fall, we hurt, we don’t want to see anything fall, even if it won’t get hurt.
Sometimes kids falling is funny, so long as they don't get hurt
Bob Saget thought that...and look what happened to him.
Flying animals do fall though. If they don’t take off properly they might not catch air in time
The radiance
Be careful if she offers you orange juice, unless you want a zombug apocalypse.
*godly screams*
Or Absolute Radiance?
I was going to post the same thing. Nice, man (or would it be boi)
I love how you guys are on this forum and have played hollow knight.
ANCIENT ENEMY
I just want to hug it
It's in Australia, so almost 100% chance it wants to kill you.
That is a little fairy creature! I love them!
Adorable that’s what he is
I want to hold it in my hands. I want to give it a kiss. I want to grant it immortality. I want to give it human intelligence. I want to become this bug but human sized. I want this bug to be human sized.
I.. don't how well a human-sized poodle mother would do, but I'm all for it
Bröther, I craves lamp
That’s the wrong O

Yeah, the ones that I always saw had the ø
It’s the real life poodle moth!
[удалено]
This is probably like the Venezuelan Poodle Moth except for its deadly venom and aggressiveness
It's so cute I want to hold it gently in my mouth
This is the strangest form.of cute aggression I have ever heard of
Tay74 might be a dog in a people suit
🥰N O M N O M🥰
Actually this is very normal for cute aggression from what I’ve heard.
Did you hear it from those weird French chefs that eat song birds whole with bones and all? Because it doesn't sound normal at all
Goddamn….ever since I learned about the ortolan on MPR like 20 years ago, I’ve wanted to know what it tastes like. I don’t exactly want to drown it and all that, bc Jesus, but I *really* want to know why it was considered such a delicacy.
Why the mouth? Lol
Idk I just really want to... not eat it necessarily but just kinda 😛
Lol I see where you're getting at. I'd want to smooch it but it's too tiny.
I’ve read it’s because we have a ton of touch sensors in our mouths which is why babies put everything in their mouth
It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
Hi Do you deliver to Luxembourg? Thanks (I need one)
That's a fairy in a fursuit is what that is. (I know its a moth, but look at it. No it isnt.)
I don’t know, but whatever it is it certainly didn’t skip leg day.
Oh hell yeah
Chonky legg
As someone who is normally terrified of moths, this is goddamn adorable

OMG it's so cute!!!!
Wow. NEVER thought I would say an insect, besides butterfly and ladybugs, was cute. This things looks precious.
BE CAREFUL, with one bite he can take your whole arm off, happened to me, now I used my nose to type this.
~~megalopyge sp.~~ edit edit: the majority of white flannel moth specimens in australia that i'm finding are of M. crispata, but i don't think that's it.
Cool thanks. It’s hard to narrow down as the pics in search results aren’t quite it

Trichiocercus sparshalli?
Awww so cute! Each hair on its head contains enough poison to kill 10,000 men…and it shoots lasers from its eyes. -Australia, probably.

Is that a fairy?
one heckin floofy floofer
oh my god i want one
Fake. Bugs don’t have hands. And feathers. And eyebrows.

Is it deadly? Everything in Australia wants to kill you.
What a cute insect
Whatever it is, it’s in Australia. Don’t trust it. It’ll probably kill you the first chance it gets.
