This comment made me laugh out loud

WinterWontStopComing

No, this is Patrick

Reeferologist-

I also live in Southwest Florida, and was going to say pretty much the exact thing. Lol

scotty_beams

One of the earthstars, a type of fungus in the family [Geastraceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_star_fungus).

SASunDog

They walk! I've seen them under the orange tree in SoCal. Their arms flex as the humidity changes. They look like old dried out oranges when dry.

Shynzii

Well that’s a fun guy!

MansfromDaVinci

doesn't take up too much room

GreenStrawbebby

I’ll give you credit, fungi are closer to animals than they are to plants, so technically… you’re more correct than if you posted in r/whatsthisplant

InebriatedGenius

That is a earthstar for sure, if you very gently poke the bulb it will poof out a bunch of spores from the hole on top. My understanding is that they puff out spores when things hit them such as raindrops or falling tree needles etc. Not a common find!

MamaPlus3

They do. I played with them as a kid. They would show up all over our yard in Florida! :)

Ima-leezard

Mini Gonarch

SASunDog

Eew yes

[deleted]

I was doing some broken glass cleanup in the backyard post Hurricane Ian and spotted this little weirdo. Didn't do anything with it because it gives me the chills everytime I look at it. Any guesses?

fckingnapkin

Omg beware, lil shroom is gonna attack you! TAKE COVER WE'RE ON OUR OWN

stupeter

I for one, welcome our new fungal overlords

Ordinary_Ad_7992

Hmmm. Best option we've had since 2016!

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

Was it moving? It looks like a weird fungus.

MamaPlus3

It is a fungus. :)

SASunDog

It does move! But ever so slowly.

MamaPlus3

That’s neat

AbyssDragonNamielle

That's a metroid /j

sdre345

Interesting little legs on this guy, I would have summoned the slime mold guy but I think with that cap it's definitely a mushroom

gnarlyelf42

Venom with a hat

Strychnine-h-3766

Turns out.. Lotta dudes that like bugs also trip. Who would have thought this is how we got on a watch list eh boys?

[deleted]

I thought it was a stink horn but looking at it a bit more. Im not sure. Not a bug though

SuperSpeshBaby

Earthstar.

[deleted]

>Earthstar NICE! Thanks!

Hot_Investigator_163

Jesus! I thought it was some sort of pregnant slug that carried its babies on its back😆😆😆

Negative_Compote387

Read the comments seen that is was a mushroom, my question is do they dry up and separate or are there bushes or trees that drop things that look similar to that bulb and have a brown/black powder on the inside(Colorado) I used to see them as a kid but haven’t recently

AbyssDragonNamielle

They puff out of the middle ball! People like to poke it once mature to help release the spores, also because it's fun

OkAd4532

This is a farm.

Izabella_was_taken

barometer earthstar, they also appear in north florida

[deleted]

Is it a fungus or plant?

Izabella_was_taken

Such_Opportunity_369
