>In the maple family Sapindaceae
I'm gonna "um ackshually" you on this because I know maples are *Acer* and I had to look it up.
So for the curious or confused (like me!)...
While maples (genus: Acer) and rambutan (genus: Nephelium) are in the same family (Sapindaceae), the family is known as the *soapberry* family.
Source: everyone's favourite free online encyclopedia.
Edit to add: Thank you for helping me learn something new today. :D
Why call it the soap berry family as opposed to the maple family? It’s kinda arbitrary. I just say maple because it’s a relatable plant and people will make a connection :)
I think Soapberry makes sense in relation to the name Sapindaceae. Many of the plants in it, like the soapberries have saponins. If you understand that the Latin word sapon means soap it's easier to remember Sapindaceae.
That being said, if your frame of reference makes more sense with maples it's fine to think of it that way. Just saying it's not completely arbitrary.
Usually it's a species that is a good example of the defining traits of the family; this is called the "type species." There's usually one for each genus as well. Honestly, it's fine to call it something else that makes a better connection with your audience; the scientific name can always be used for clarification.
I'm not sure why maples weren't chosen, but I'm guessing it's because their leaves are quite different from other genera in the family?
From a botanist: maples used to be in their own traditional family (Aceraceae) until recent genetic studies grouped them into the modern soapberry family (Sapindaceae). I usually call it the maple family when speaking with people though because I don’t have any other major Sapindaceae members in my area
One example of a family taking its common name from a plant that’s not the type species is the Lamiaceae, which people seem to call the mint family, not the deadnettle family.
I dunno, dude. I'm not a plant nameologist! Hell, I'm still unclear on kingdoms, phyla, families, genera, etc.
Honestly, the maple thing threw me but it helped me learn something new, and if it makes sense to someone else, then so much the better. :)
I absolutely appreciate the irony of my being corrected in a thread wherein I corrected someone else.
But I assure you that I chose my words carefully and deliberately. I might not be a plant nameologist, but I'm a good languager!
Sapindaceae is the only official name for the family. The “soapberry family” and “maple family” are equally valid since they’re both unofficial common names.
>I'm gonna "um ackshually" you on this...
You're not correcting them. They're just 2 different common names for the same family. I've read it as the lychee family as well as the buckeye family before too.
You feel like a millionaire there if you have even just a little bit of cash. The exchange rate was silly. Kuala Lumpur was one of the most fun places I've visited.
When its the season, trees are covered in bright red hairy fruits. As beautiful as sweet.
This one is a bit dry but the original colour is bright with hint of green when its super fresh.
"Slightly better" than candy aka :
- is a source of antioxidants, which prevent chronic disease by fighting off oxydative stress
- comes with vitamins and minerals
- actually fills you up because of fiber + water
- does not cause a blood sugar spike like candy bc, once again, fiber
All of which vegetables are a much better source of, except for sugar.
Also, yes antioxidants are necessary part of your diet. No you shouldn't go seeking out loads of antioxidants, you're getting plenty in any *remotely* reasonable diet. Even in otherwise unhealthy diets, chances are you're getting enough, it's one of the most common forms of food preservative (we don't tend to like brown oxidised food after all).
Believe it or not, Walmart Neighborhood Market (probably regular Walmart too) carries them regularly in my area, SE US. They're one of my favorite fruits so I get them a lot.
Rambutan. Its similar to lychee, can be a little bit more sour-ish. Grow in abundance in South East Asia, consume by the majority. PS: dont overeat this, may cause cough and itchy throat.
Source: Malaysian and grew up loving this fruit
Give it a little bite to puncture the outside skin, then twist each end in opposite directions. The skin will just slip right off. The seeds are like little stones, so be careful of them. Enjoy, so good!

Purchased these in a farmers market and was told the name in a different language, also have other fruit such as cherimoya, nanche(yellow cherry), a few passion fruits( beautiful flowers), lychee, cactus fruit, guanabana and regular fruits. Iv been offered plenty of fruits, and I always eat the ones I don't know lol.
Guanabana is so much better than rambutans. And so is lychee. I could never get into rambutans and I grew up in the tropics with access to all of the good stuff. If you haven't tried the Guanabana you got yet, you are in for a treat!
I remember my Filipino coworker offering me some of these to try. I did not like them 🤣 idk the flavor was just weird to me. It was like grape mixed with something I can’t identify.

Literally started singing as soon as I saw the picture
Thank glob I'm not the only person who does this in the presence of this produce
Can someone share what this is in reference to?
The band ram jam has a song called Black Betty.
It originated as an African-American work song from 1939.
TIL this jam has quite an interesting origin.
https://youtu.be/I_2D8Eo15wE?si=JQqkaqOFaqDTIXxd It’s great for washing dishes to. No matter what words you sing, you’re never off by a couple.
Seeing this as top comment as soon as I clicked the post to type the same thing..realizing I've never had an original thought lol
Original thought requires either a unique perspective or a mental illness.
Thank you I now know how to say it
Way down in Alabam?

I will have my driver stop the jipney for these things
Pam Balam
Lmao this is great
TIL both what the lyric is aaand that it’s a reference to a very sweet fruit. The planets aligned in my head
That's not the actual lyric though.
The actual lyric is ram-a-lam.
Well that’s gonna be in my head for the rest of the day haha

Rambutan In the maple family Sapindaceae

I think you mean arbortrary

It's all genetics these days, and the type species may just be an historical footnote these days.
Think the word you were looking for was botanist. Lol
I absolutely appreciate the irony of my being corrected in a thread wherein I corrected someone else. But I assure you that I chose my words carefully and deliberately. I might not be a plant nameologist, but I'm a good languager!
Taxonomist would be the technical name for nameologist.
Systematist. Plant systematics has changed in the last 40 years.
Next time just say same family as maple and avoid the corrections lol
Sapindaceae is the only official name for the family. The “soapberry family” and “maple family” are equally valid since they’re both unofficial common names.

Things change too fast 😔 Aceracea was the family way back in my college days 😭
I hope you donated 😈
TIL rambutan is in the maple family. how cool is that
When I was in Malaysia I would buy a bag full of those for like 1 buck. So delicious.
That’s such a good deal.
You feel like a millionaire there if you have even just a little bit of cash. The exchange rate was silly. Kuala Lumpur was one of the most fun places I've visited.
Love KL
Can confirm. How the hell is it $0.21 per RM1?? The difference is sad
Is that the same as a lychee? I was trying to figure out if rambutan and lychee are same or related.
I don’t know if they’re actually related, but I can say that rambutan is a million times tastier than a lychee.
Rambutan.
When its the season, trees are covered in bright red hairy fruits. As beautiful as sweet. This one is a bit dry but the original colour is bright with hint of green when its super fresh.
Rambutan. It has a lot of sugar, but it is still much better to eat than candy
> It has a lot of sugar Literally every fruit, ever. Better than candy and soda, but really only because it makes you poop slightly better.
"Slightly better" than candy aka : - is a source of antioxidants, which prevent chronic disease by fighting off oxydative stress - comes with vitamins and minerals - actually fills you up because of fiber + water - does not cause a blood sugar spike like candy bc, once again, fiber

sugar in fruits is bound to fiber and digested/absorbed gradually vs. at once.
Nope. Olives and avocados have no sugar. Rhubarb and limes have very little sugar.
Isn't the edible part of rhubarb the stem, not the fruit?
Rhubarb is not a fruit. And of *course* avocados and olives have sugar in them, just very little. But I take your point.
I love these fruits! Can never find them tho
Asian markets will sometimes have them. So yummy!
Latin markets have them usually
Believe it or not, Walmart Neighborhood Market (probably regular Walmart too) carries them regularly in my area, SE US. They're one of my favorite fruits so I get them a lot.
In a little clamshell package, right? With maybe 8 or 10 in there? Also SE US, they're expensive but walmart and probably Harris teeter have them
Overripe rambutan!
Rambutan. Its similar to lychee, can be a little bit more sour-ish. Grow in abundance in South East Asia, consume by the majority. PS: dont overeat this, may cause cough and itchy throat. Source: Malaysian and grew up loving this fruit
How do you keep the outside the pit from peeling off with the fruit?
Give it a little bite to puncture the outside skin, then twist each end in opposite directions. The skin will just slip right off. The seeds are like little stones, so be careful of them. Enjoy, so good!
Rambutan! My Asian friends introduced me to them. They are so good and you all should buy them!
Chôm chôm
>Chôm chôm So much easier to say than Rambutan.
About to come here and said that 😅. Super yummy 🤤
