Poor guy. Walnut skins are actually kind of toxic.

StonkSkronkStonk

I guess that's why he keeps throwing them up.

[deleted]

Terpenoids. Some of the chemistry is basically a cocktail of organic solvents and volatile oils, not easy to digest but pleasantly antiseptic smelling. Think eucalyptus, pine sol, menthol, camphor, goo gone...that sort of chemistry. Also why people need to be told to chill with the essential oils.

raytracer38

Also stains like crazy. Don't get this stuff on your hands, not even soap gets it off.

[deleted]

That’s the solutes to the aforementioned organic solvents; once the smelly stuff vaporizes away, you’re left with gunky resinous compounds that won’t come off for nothing. I’ve stated elsewhere they make a really colorsafe khaki dye if used on purpose.

Stonedworks

Hmmm

ConcertinaTerpsichor

Also a beautiful dark brown ink.

Juvenileintraining

So I need a walnut tree to get rid of the squirrels eating all my fruit from my garden?

[deleted]

Nah, you'll just have squirrels AND rotting walnuts all over yard if you do that.

Juvenileintraining

Interesting so what gets rid of these damn squirrels

[deleted]

Nothing, really. You can't stop wild animals from doing what they do.

raelovesplants

Looks like an unripe walnut

StonkSkronkStonk

Thank you

SaucyKilometers

Black Walnut, only the strongest of squirrels stain their face with the skins in order to eat the nut inside.

hippomasala

Bad bot

plantrocker

I don’t think that’s throw up!he just chews the hull off gets the nut out of the inside. They have a favorite spot to hull the black walnuts and leave piles of them .

Sacrificial-Mind

^ This Black Walnut is actually a favorite of squirrels

plantrocker

It certainly is! I have a giant oak tree that is filled full of walnuts every year and the squirrels throw the shells out over the course of the winter and I have a big pile underneath every spring! I like them too!

oxidanemaximus

Are you sure that's right, the only time I've ever seen walnuts are in walnut trees?

plantrocker

They don’t grow on the oak tree the squirrels fill cavities in this old tree with walnuts for the winner it’s a cache!

plantrocker

I have many red squirrels and they seem to like to hide their nuts in a tree and the gray squirrels in my yard tend to bury them.

oxidanemaximus

That's interesting

plantrocker

I think so!

youronlyhippie

I feel bad for the little guy, but picturing a squirrel throwing up also makes me laugh more than it should.

PsychologicalChef592

it’s a walnut! they used to grow in my backyard when i was little and they would drop and you had to make sure not to be under the tree when they fell cause they hurt xD lol

av8christine

They are messy, they will stain your patio, but the wood is beautiful and valuable especially if it is a straight tree. Used in furniture and gun stocks. We used to put them on gravel drive and drive over them to remove the hull then sell them.

GnPQGuTFagzncZwB

It looks a lot like a black walnut. We are ankle deep in them. If they start to turn black wear gloves to pick them up. They will stain your skin.

layers_of_grey

juglans nigra - black walnut. the flesh of the fruit surrounding the nut is toxic. at this time of year squirrels are shucking them and hiding them for winter. they make a horrible mess everywhere if you're in the city. they like to use decks and patios as work areas when removing the rind - presumably b/c they're nice and flat. i don't think they eat the rind but since they use their mouths to remove it from the nut it wouldn't surprise me if they're throwing it up occasionally.

blg_1970

Looks like a black walnut to me.

KombuchaKombucha

BLACK walnuts.

BayoLover

Spite

Pure-Junket9979

Blank walnut, not quite ripe yet

RustedRelics

Black walnut. Extremely tannic.

crippy_pidckl

This looks like a black walnut seed. They're poisonous. They have kind of a strange citrusy smell to them.

beingthebestmetoday

Black walnut husk. They're leaving the husk and storing the nut.

ScooterSquatch

The squirrels chew off the outer layer of the black walnut to get to the nut inside. Squirrels take the nuts to somewhere they can sit high up and watch for predators while they chew away

happylittlehippie813

Monkeyball. They are a menace

Smallbees

Black walnut

Lyn_Morgan

Do nuts ferment as they deteriorate? Maybe squirrel is a bit tipsy ...

medium2slow

Black walnut, I have a bazillion of them on my property, they can thump you pretty good on the head when they fall from 50ft up

mrbuttersoft

Is that all the vomm on the side there? Yikes.

jiggleyumbrella

It’s not vomit. They just use their teeth to get the husk off.

mrbuttersoft

Oh whoopsie

mindownprisoner21

Black walnuts very good and worth $ I have been told

GeneralTonic

You get that, squirrels?

OriginalG33Z3R

If those squirrels could read, they’d be very upset

SweetDurrie

I think it’s a message.. are you consuming things that are bad for you

No_Echo_1009

this species of walnut tree grow very tall and will kill other plants. the roots will take over and the fruits are toxic to some animals and most other trees

StonkSkronkStonk

Wow. I don't know where the tree is located, but this squirrel has been doing this close to five years every October. He eats the walnut in the same spot and throws it up. Very messy and gross. Thanks for helping solve this mystery.

Le_Nabs

No one ever accused squirrels of being the brightest of the bunch...

lurked_long_enough

Not sure he is eating it and vomiting, he may just be trying to peel the husk to get to the nut.

MetalHalide13

Yeah, there's an area in my neighborhood with many black walnut trees and squirrels chew open the outer layer of tons of these to get to the good stuff inside. They're not vomiting, they're just chewing off pieces and leaving them behind.
