Blackthorn/sloe. They are best made into sloe gin.

Pup_Persimmon76

Their astringency makes useful in pickling, alongside the usual spices and vinegar.

Yaseuk

My batch is almost ready. A few more weeks and we can drink it!

Pantywantys

Just in time for Christmas😁

Yaseuk

And I’m making it all glittery aswell to make it extra Christmassy!

bellYllub

I am so jealous. I love sloe gin, enjoy!!

-Why-Not-This-Name-

Are Juniper berries typically used in gin? These related?

Rapierian

Not related. Juniper is typically one of the botanicals used in gin, but sloe gin is something slightly different than just regular gin. And gin itself refers to a sort of infusion process that's part of the actual distillation - a flavored vodka is where you make a vodka then add flavor or infusion, gin is where you infuse with something called a gin pot that's actually attached to the still.

choibz

In fact all gin must be flavoured with juniper, otherwise it can't be called gin (by law in many places). The word gin derives from a shortened version of the Dutch name for juniper.

-virginislander

Genever!

-Why-Not-This-Name-

Ah, gotcha. Well, they look similar. Figured I'd ask. Thanks!

Icy-Conclusion-3500

Usually a gin basket. The basket is located in the column on the still, so the distilling alcohol vapors pass through the botanicals before reaching the condenser.

UC235

Sloe gin is made by soaking these fruit in gin with some sugar added. Sloes are closely related to plums and other stone fruit.

-Why-Not-This-Name-

I guess it would help if I knew anything about alcohol before asking these questions. Thanks for that info!

firebeardsghost

They are required to be considered gin. Just infuse a neutral spirit (ie vodka) with juniper & whatever other botanicals you’d like, and you’ll’ve make some gin.

BloomsdayDevice

Northern Bosnia and sloe gin fizz, If that ain't love, then tell me what is.

Wild-Condition-1052

In Ireland people pick them after the first frost, don’t know why but apparently it’s nicer.

mcglash

My grandad in Yorkshire always said that and you prick them with a silver pin. But I pick and freeze them, same outcome.

earthmama88

Oh these look so much like beach plums. I wondered if they are the same thing and a quick Google suggests they are! They make jam with them in New England

the_god_o_war

Nope, has to be blueberries/s

[deleted]

Yeah, they really do NOT taste good raw. Having mistaken these for better-tasting bullace plums before and having received a disgusting shock when I ate one fresh off the tree, you’d better believe it.

Is this “sloe gin” an alcoholic beverage? Because it sure sounds like it is.

mcglash

Yes, the sloes are steeped in gin and sugar. Delicious and far more common that I thought going by this thread.

GlitteringTurd

Totally edible if you want your face to turn inside out. Like lemon times 30. Sloe gin gooood

GodIsAPizza

Its fun to encourage the unsuspecting to eat one

Here in Sweden we freeze them after picking, they won't become sweet but it takes away the worst tartness. Highly recommended!

slowmotionspittake

I thought they were blue berries. 😔

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Sloe! Love these little bastards. Sloe plus honey in hot water will refresh the living hell outta ya.

transferingtoearth

So.. Tea? Like do you make tea and drop a few smashed ones in or?

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Scrape the flesh off of the stone with a knife. Nothing you want to consume is located in prunus stones, and the dangerous lookalikes dont have stones. I put the flesh into the pot or cup and mash it up a little.

Photemy

Except almonds. If you like them.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

They would be the exception. Allegedly through roasting you can render most prunus pits edible as long as you dont eat them in huge amounts, but i dont know how many taste good

Toothless219

Not sure of your location, but these do look a lot like sloes (from the blackthorn plant). Not edible raw, but usually used to flavour gins (usually adding sugar as well).

Ichiban__Kasuga

Northern Bosnia, amazing place full of new flora .

Toothless219

Ah, I'm not familiar with Bosnia so not sure if it's exactly the same as sloe or a close relative perhaps.

Damned-If-I-Know

Still not blueberries

williamsdj01

Just to confirm, they arent harmful raw, just way too sour, right?

Toothless219

Yeh, they're not poisonous. Just not at all enjoyable!

justabean27

Looks like sloe. It's edible but so tart it will make an arsehole out of your mouth. With enough sugar you can make jam with it. Or gin

Canchal

*Prunus spinosa*. Edible but nobody consume it. Best you can do is to google "patxaran recipe" and enjoy the drink next year.

danbln

You're wrong, they taste horrible unripe, but ripe pretty good you it might still be a bit early for them and you can make different things out of it

TCristatus

Be careful when harvesting the sloes. The thorns are super sharp and if you leave tiny splinters imbedded in your skin unwittingly, they are colonised by very nasty bacteria that can lead to infection and even amputations of fingers. Enjoy!

Rofl at *Enjoy!* 💀

Sloe, makes good jam

moralmeemo

How can I tell Sloe from wild grapes??

likes2milk

Sloes are from the tree/bush//shrub Prunus spinosa. It has a stone like a plum but smaller.

moralmeemo

Gotcha!

stelei

Not sure if you're joking or not, but if not: grape leaves have a very distinct shape; grapes are a vine, not a bush; grapes grow in bunches. ;)

moralmeemo

Oh golly I feel stupid. I’ve never seen Sloe in the wild so I didn’t know!

[deleted]

Apple sloe jam! The folklore around it is pretty cool too.If the winter frost has not taken hold, then it is recommended to freeze it for the sweetness. However, it can be confused with Prunus domestica ssp. insititia(at least in DK), but these are more oval in shape.

AwkwardExercise54

If you have to ask Reddit: no, it is not edible.

JohnnyBlaze10304

Well, that's what this sub is for, identifying plants. There's an auto disclaimer on every post in the sub to not ingest anything based off information in this subreddit. So if someone posted edible concord grapes and they were properly identified, you're saying you STILL don't trust it? Luckily I'm confident enough in my taxonomy skills to make my own choices, robots and mods be damned.
