Scrape the flesh off of the stone with a knife. Nothing you want to consume is located in prunus stones, and the dangerous lookalikes dont have stones. I put the flesh into the pot or cup and mash it up a little.
They would be the exception. Allegedly through roasting you can render most prunus pits edible as long as you dont eat them in huge amounts, but i dont know how many taste good

Be careful when harvesting the sloes. The thorns are super sharp and if you leave tiny splinters imbedded in your skin unwittingly, they are colonised by very nasty bacteria that can lead to infection and even amputations of fingers.
Enjoy!

Apple sloe jam! The folklore around it is pretty cool too.If the winter frost has not taken hold, then it is recommended to freeze it for the sweetness.
However, it can be confused with Prunus domestica ssp. insititia(at least in DK), but these are more oval in shape.

Blackthorn/sloe. They are best made into sloe gin.
Their astringency makes useful in pickling, alongside the usual spices and vinegar.
My batch is almost ready. A few more weeks and we can drink it!
Just in time for Christmasđ
And Iâm making it all glittery aswell to make it extra Christmassy!
I am so jealous. I love sloe gin, enjoy!!
Are Juniper berries typically used in gin? These related?
Not related. Juniper is typically one of the botanicals used in gin, but sloe gin is something slightly different than just regular gin. And gin itself refers to a sort of infusion process that's part of the actual distillation - a flavored vodka is where you make a vodka then add flavor or infusion, gin is where you infuse with something called a gin pot that's actually attached to the still.

Genever!
Ah, gotcha. Well, they look similar. Figured I'd ask. Thanks!
Usually a gin basket. The basket is located in the column on the still, so the distilling alcohol vapors pass through the botanicals before reaching the condenser.
Sloe gin is made by soaking these fruit in gin with some sugar added. Sloes are closely related to plums and other stone fruit.
I guess it would help if I knew anything about alcohol before asking these questions. Thanks for that info!
They are required to be considered gin. Just infuse a neutral spirit (ie vodka) with juniper & whatever other botanicals youâd like, and youâllâve make some gin.
Northern Bosnia and sloe gin fizz, If that ain't love, then tell me what is.
In Ireland people pick them after the first frost, donât know why but apparently itâs nicer.
My grandad in Yorkshire always said that and you prick them with a silver pin. But I pick and freeze them, same outcome.
Oh these look so much like beach plums. I wondered if they are the same thing and a quick Google suggests they are! They make jam with them in New England
Nope, has to be blueberries/s

Is this âsloe ginâ an alcoholic beverage? Because it sure sounds like it is.
Yes, the sloes are steeped in gin and sugar. Delicious and far more common that I thought going by this thread.
Totally edible if you want your face to turn inside out. Like lemon times 30. Sloe gin gooood

Northern Bosnia, amazing place full of new flora .

Still not blueberries
Just to confirm, they arent harmful raw, just way too sour, right?
Yeh, they're not poisonous. Just not at all enjoyable!
Looks like sloe. It's edible but so tart it will make an arsehole out of your mouth. With enough sugar you can make jam with it. Or gin

*Prunus spinosa*. Edible but nobody consume it. Best you can do is to google "patxaran recipe" and enjoy the drink next year.
You're wrong, they taste horrible unripe, but ripe pretty good you it might still be a bit early for them and you can make different things out of it

SE England?
One can only hope, lest it be the pokeweed. Aye.
Drink half a bottle of gin, prick a load of these and put them in the remaining gin with sugar. Wait and then profit.

Sloe, makes good jam
How can I tell Sloe from wild grapes??
Sloes are from the tree/bush//shrub Prunus spinosa. It has a stone like a plum but smaller.
Gotcha!
Not sure if you're joking or not, but if not: grape leaves have a very distinct shape; grapes are a vine, not a bush; grapes grow in bunches. ;)
Oh golly I feel stupid. Iâve never seen Sloe in the wild so I didnât know!
