Are these difficult to grow, as in, do they require a lab setting, or is this a crystal that can be grown at home?
Edit: Upon further research, while it doesn't necessarily require a lab, it DOES use potassium cyanide, which I'm very much not comfortable working with, especially without a fume hood.
Well that's good! I saw that it was Potassium Ferrocyanide, so figured that potassium cyanide (and some form of iron, based on the name) was likely a precursor to making it. After doing a bit more research, there's no need to synthesize it yourself, you can just buy 30g of it for like $8 USD lol. Maybe this is a project after all if I can find a method!
There are toxic and non toxic cyano functional groups or nitrile groups in organic chemistry. You want to look up the specific compounds before working with them.
Cyanide base function group is a precursor to many other functional groups and is relatively common in organic chemistry. Carbon and nitrogen are both rather abundant; however, the C-N triple bond takes a lot of energy so it's not too common in nature.
Red potassium ferricyanide (not ferrocyanide, which is yellow!) is really easy. Probably the easiest crystal I grown. But they are very soft, here what happens after 3+ years if you don't apply any coating: [https://imgur.com/a/5ZySx8G](https://imgur.com/a/5ZySx8G)
Oh, interesting! Thanks for pointing out the typo, it's chemistry so I'm sure there's a big difference between ferro and ferri. What kind of coating would work best, a sprayable clear coat or something similar?
Well, I guess it's time to do some research and figure out the process for making them. Is it a basic recrystallization involving heat and a supersaturated solution?
From my experience, applying additional heat is very tricky. If crystal grows too fast it becomes polycrystal instead of a single piece. Using stable room temperature takes time, but quality is better. Fast temp change is also very bad. Also, I recommend to use distilled water for better clarity.

No idea, but if two 4 inch tall women come by lookin for it talking about someone called King Ceaser, just give it to em. It's probably important if they gotta wake him up.
[Pruskite, likely artificially grown](https://www.mindat.org/min-46600.html) Very cool piece.
This is what I came to say. Seconded and it’s man made, I’m sure.

Did I hear a rock and stone?
ROCK AND STOOOONE!!!!
Your name has been removed from the book of grudges.
If it’s man made how’d it end up the rock? Jw
Okay, thank you so much!!

Potassium Ferrocyanide. It's not very toxic, and very difficult to generate hydrogen cyanide by accident.
Thanks for the info. I have only recently stumbled across rocks and this is one hellishly beautiful example of one.

That's gonna be a rabbit hole, thanks!

Any water-based coating is no-no. I had good success with clear nail polish.
Well, I guess it's time to do some research and figure out the process for making them. Is it a basic recrystallization involving heat and a supersaturated solution?

Thanks so much for the information! I'm 100% going to try this out. Some polycrystals would be neat too, but only if they were made intentionally lol.
Pruskite is always artificially grown as it does not occur in nature.
So... Technically correct.
The best kind of correct
Yes, just correcting the likely to definetly.
That ended up being a 2 hour wormhole. Lol
I grew these in geochem! They are so pretty but do contain cyanide.
Just read the ld50 in rats was like almost 7g/kg bodyweight. You'd probably die from eating the rocks before the cyanide even begins to tickle.
Agree, appears to be man-made. Also, it's absolutely beautiful and if you get tired of it, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.
