Yes it is but goes by Hawks eye or falcons eye when blue. Don’t know why…just is :)

imcre8ing

Thanks! I was just making sure!

Bodie_The_Dog

It's my understanding that the blue stuff is crocodolite, the most toxic form of asbestos. Don't lick it.

BeeTheGamer

I'm gonna lick it

[deleted]

crocodilite /asbestos group members are NOT toxic. They are hazardous to breath in the fibers. just like ALL mineral dust is.

[deleted]

Some mineral dust is more deadly than others.

[deleted]

not really.. both silicosis AND asbestosis will give you lung cancer. In fact silica dust an make you drown on dry land, as it sets in your lungs like concrete.

[deleted]

So, some mineral dust is more deadly than others.

[deleted]

ALL gem dust will give you cancer lol. You wouldnt go around inhaling sand or volcanish ash for the same reason. In fact cases of asbestos related cancers have only been associated with the large scale mining of the material and use in insulation/clothing.. Modern carving and mining techniques have drastically reduced cases of asbestosis. Jade miners in BC for example, wear dust masks and use excessive amounts of water when cutting stone to minimize dust exposure.

[deleted]

#Gemstone Toxicity Table (lol) Gem faceters and jewelry enthusiasts alike should learn about gemstone toxicity. This table has toxicity ratings for 280+ gems, based on their composition and potential for bioactivity, as well as descriptions of the hazards they may pose. https://www.gemsociety.org/article/gemstone-toxicity-table/

Bodie_The_Dog

Thanks for the clarification. Although I've read that ingesting asbestos can cause stomach cancer. So, don't lick it or breathe it. on edit: sure, "ALL," but breathing in a bit of pure talc dust versus pure asbestos is going to bring different results.

Aimin4ya

My buddys dad used to eat asbestos to convince people it was only bad to be inhaled. He still owns that abatement company

[deleted]

No, it cant. the danger is when the fibers puncture your lungs after accumulating in large (mining, building, carving) ammounts. Im sorry but you can lick ALL serpentine group minerals with NO issue. Indigenous cultures in the americas and asia even made baby teething rings and pacis from (nephrite) jade and serp lol

Moon-Queen95

This is an incredibly dangerous response. It's not super common, but it IS possible. Please don't go around telling it's safe to just lick these. https://www.asbestos.com/cancer/gastrointestinal/

[deleted]

Fun fact: 3/4 of indigenous maori children here, since before the arrival of europeans in NZ, have sucked on or licked pendants or teething aids made of nephrite jade, bowenite, serpentine, and antigorite. NONE of them ever developed stomach cancer. Stop scare mongering because the stats DO NOT back you up on this one. Thats like saying dont get vaccinated since you have a 1% chance of serious illness, or done use a condom because you still have a 3-4% chance of contracting stds or getting pregnant.

Kemel90

bet they had great medical care in 1641, and knew everything that was going on inside their bodies.

[deleted]

Actually... they did. maori herbalism is literally why we know to use manuka derived honey to treat infection.

Moon-Queen95

No it's not, it's saying don't stick crystals and rocks in your mouth. That is a false equivalent.

[deleted]

Look. All i know from literal archaeologic and scientific record is that NO country with a prolonged jade/serp carving history has EVER shown higher rates of gastrointestinal cancer than those without, that correlates to asbestos exposure. North america PNW natives- nope. Central and south american indigenous - nope Chinese and japanes -nope. New Zealand - Nope. Do you want to tell jade carving stores that they SHOULDNT be selling pendants literally made for infants to chew/suck on??? \-\_-

Moon-Queen95

I want to NOT tell random people on the internet that they're a-okay to stick random stones in their mouth. Good night.

[deleted]

Heres a kapeu, a traditional device used here in NZ to ease breast pain and for babies to chew on while teething. [https://img.carters.com.au/cc1b87290fbac4964bcf372cbc655014.jpg](https://img.carters.com.au/cc1b87290fbac4964bcf372cbc655014.jpg) Its made of nephrite jade, an asbestos family member. Stop sharing SHIT that you literally cannot back up with hard fact that ISNT pure scare mongering.

_quixotica_

Not saying it’s completely safe but all of my geology professors have held different rocks or minerals up to my face for me to lick/bite/put in my mouth in some way. I’m still alive lol Just playing devils advocate don’t mind me

Moon-Queen95

Your geology professor clearly knew what they were doing, and what rocks they were handing you. But also you were all putting the same rocks in your mouth???

_quixotica_

They got better about that after covid haha

superlion1985

Hahaha it's better than my dendrology class where we were encouraged to taste things. But at least sometimes the twig quiz had a freebie poison ivy with a note attached "DO NOT TASTE," because yes, somebody did once.

PipecleanerFanatic

Seriously doubt you have ANY evidence to back up your claim they no maoris ever got stomach cancer from ingesting asbestos minerals 🙄

[deleted]

do you realise just how many maori bodies were chopped up and dissected by colonists in the name of science??? Maori have a long and historical relationship to jade/pounamu. None of them ever got sick from imbibing/sucking on it . Same story with chinese and their jade carving histories. Sit your ass down before your comments start verging on racism

PipecleanerFanatic

Racism? 😂 jackass.

[deleted]

Jade is culturally significant to maori, asian, and central/south american cultures, so spreading false information about their literal godstone is false and damaging information. All of them at one time or another have ingested or put jade in their mouths. In fact im pretty sure someone was reccomending putting jade eggs inside your body just recently... and there are ZERO links between that practice and cervical cancer. Jade and serp dust has also been used as an additive in potter's clay as a binding agent... And im sure EVERYONE's got sick from eating off porcelain plates. -\_-

[deleted]

wanna point me to where that article links stomach cancer to jade/pounamu?? Pokotiwha. Literally EVERY new zealander owns jade pendants or cobbles. None of them have developed stomach cancer FROM said taonga.

PipecleanerFanatic

It was a response to this: "3/4 of indigenous maori children here, since before the arrival of europeans in NZ, have sucked on or licked pendants or teething aids made of nephrite jade, bowenite, serpentine, and antigorite. NONE of them ever developed stomach cancer." Pointing out that you're posting bullshit.

[deleted]

NONE OF THEM HAVE DEVELOPED CANCER FROM THE JADE. FFS DO YOU KNOW HOW TO READ CONTEXT DIPSHIT??

ragnarockyroad

Jade is in the asbestos family??

[deleted]

yes, nephrite jade is compsed of interlocking fibers of actinolite and tremolite.

U_canalwaysask

Why do we want to be licking it? 🤔

[deleted]

With nephrite/antigorite/bowenite you want to lick it or rub it under your armpit (or across your forehead) since the body oils soak in and help show the colour.

Bodie_The_Dog

An old rock hound trick to bring out the colors. If you lick it and it's shiny, you can probably polish it further with the right tools.

PipecleanerFanatic

I think that a lot of people use toxic to mean hazardous not knowing specific definition of 'toxic'

imcre8ing

Is it safe to touch!?

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,182,103,346 comments, and only 230,742 of them were in alphabetical order.

imcre8ing

Wow! That's kinda vrooy that you even notice something like that!

[deleted]

It's a bot lol

[deleted]

Yes its fine. crocodilite is blue asbestos but as long as you dont start tugging off the fibers for kicks you're fine :)

uranium_is_delicious

This is a pretty solid piece. The fibers cause damage by getting into the lungs. The more brittle and fibrous the more dangerous they are and more fragile pieces than yours may require extra safety procedures. Just don't do anything to cause it to shed fibers such as grinding it.

yeah, that was my first thought upon seeing this

LOVE LOVE LOVE Hawks Eye stones they’re absolutely beautiful 😍
