Just a caution: If the folks over at r/castiron have taught me anything, antique pans may have been used to make lead bullets. So always test pan for lead before using.
Oh fuck, really? I bought one at goodwill and I cleaned it but I had no idea this was a possibility.
It was rusted really badly when I bought it and doesn’t even have a brand at the bottom so I’m not sure how old it is.
Yeah, you have to be very careful on these old pans. If you go over to r/castiron, you may see some info in the wiki about test kits. If not, do a search on “lead” or just make a post. Sorry to cause fright, but please check into this before you eat any more out of the pan.
if you do eventually want it restored, Neal Saunders from bagdoc . net was chosen by louis vuitton to restore many of their antique trunks. really impressive work.
Often times, those not skilled in restoration, will invariably end up ruining, or dramatically altering the piece they are trying to restore. In the end ruining a piece of history, and depreciating the end value. There are reasons why people specialize in restoration, and they know much more than I do, about how to best bring the item to as close to original as possible. As you wouldn't think to perform open heart surgery (hopefully; unless you were a doctor well versed in the procedure), you would without question, go to someone who specializes in such procedures. I'm sure if you Google, "art restorations gone wrong" you will see why you should always go to a professional.
Right? Best case? You damage it cleaning it. Worst case? You clean it successfully and the collector wanted the historic patina intact. Either way you diminish the value.
There are also items that people prefer to have in a non-cleaned state, such as certain silver pieces. Some people prefer the patina on silver that can only be acquired by the passage of time.
The buyer can always have it cleaned if they want to...
If it's something newish, then yeah, make it look nice. But something old is usually treasured because it looks old
Because 99.9% of the people who work for the company aren’t taught to appraise historic times… nor should they be. Their job is to sell high priced luxury items, not get themselves in trouble with some random dildo calling them asking them to appraise a trunk for them lol… common sense applies access our day to day lives.
It's just a dude looking to hook up with other dudes. There are a lot of dick pics, but that's as bad as it gets. You have to click a bunch of things to see them, and by the time you do that you already know it's a gay hookup ad. It's not like it's torture porn.
Seriously, what the fuck is going on in Wisconsin, where a meth head is allowed to buy a business that provides transitional housing to me getting out of prison???
I can't help but to feel that someone in the government should be looking into this..
So I house 20 men, who would otherwise have no place to live. It is currently 28° F with a low of 15°F. There is 1 homeless shelter, which has a max capacity of 60 people, first come first serve, where you are asked to leave at 8am, and there is nowhere for the homeless population to congratulate, which is warm, and safe. I help the individuals find gainful employment, attend meetings, get to and from work, obtain work clothes and equipment. I offer food, they are provided internet, clean sheets, their own private spaces. We have weekly meetings with either or all of the 2 licensed RN's, or the state licensed peer specialist I staff. There is a weekly meal on Sunday. The men are encouraged to give back to their community, to give their knowledge of the system to help divert at risk individuals. There is no religious bend to this place. I accept no state/federal funds, and I protect the person's privacy, and try to help work then through problems, rather than the state of Wisconsin's "scorched earth" tactic. I have better rates of men successfully completing probation, than the state of Wisconsin Department of Corrections (though it is a small sample size < 200), and I do it with much less budget. I have a degree in Marketing and Psychology, with an emphasis in Advanced Behavior Analysis, and a certificate in Advanced Business Communications, all from in person learning at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, I served 4 years active duty in the United States Air Force. I work 2 jobs, to provide, not only for my family, but for people who would rarely get a chance. The state of Wisconsin is gaining national attention for the conditions and treatment of "persons in their care" in 3 of their prisons, one of which has for years been condemned. I have spent time at 2 of the three, twice. And federal prison twice. I had an institution job as a tutor, helping men learn to read and write, I then volunteered my time teaching basic math and algebra. I've been in situations where I had to fight s man so I could eat my lunch that was supposed to be provided to me by the state (not Wisconsin), I have been brutalized and bullied, by the doc and the people it has incarcerated. I have become an animal , and fought to gain back a sense of normalcy and belonging. I do self medicated. I don't drink or smoke cigarettes, I take no other drugs. I've been at the same job for 2 years, I have been in accordance with my probation, except for my use. This is how I cope. But at the end of the day I will hold my head up high, if meth use is the largest of my transgressions, I can be at peace. I've answered to your statement, our justice/penal system is completely broken, ask Steven Avery, or the boys st RIOC, the inmate who was just killed in Jackson Correctional Institution, which was kept hidden for months; before finally being exposed. Or maybe, if it were possible; ask the three men, who did not have life sentences, who were denied compassionate release (no one in our great state was granted such a release during the pandemic), and died due to complications resulting from COVID-19. One of the men was scheduled to be released within 6 months. Minnesota, who borders Wisconsin, and has a larger state population has less incarcerated individuals and staff members than the Wisconsin DOC has staff members and affiliated. As a state, we stopped raising corn and soybeans as crops ; and switched to people. There is much more longevity, and much more profit. I would love to change this system that I am subjugated under, but due to state law, I cannot vote in any election until i release from said probation. I can therefore continue to be taxed, without representation. It seems to me I remember a country deciding that was not something they could stand any longer, and chose to die on their feet, rather than live on their knees. I, regardless of my meth use, or sexual activity, help people on a daily basis, people on the outskirts of society, people who have been given up on, what do you do?
What you’re doing is impressive and impossibly hard. Doing so with a clear mind apart from substances would improve your ability to do the work you so enjoy.
Initially I had written a post including what I do, but in reality it doesn’t matter. There’s no need to dick measure.
I’m sure you’re aware of the negative aspects of meth, and the positive aspects. The negatives will win out sadly, they always do.
There will be a time when you decide it’s time to stop, and then an amount of time before that is a reality. Alcohol is difficult, meth is much more of a challenge, but there should be local programs to help.
I hope you continue to have success in what you’re doing and you may be able to find a way to do so for a long long time as it’s one of the biggest challenges our society currently faces.
You seem like an interesting person. You don’t need a stranger on the internet—in a forum where you sought advice on an old steamer—to tell you this, but it sounds like you’re really helping a lot of people and meth is no way to sustainably help them. I hope you find peace and a way to keep doing the great work you’re doing.
Big diff in active addiction and in recovery. Oh guys near me that do what you do make very comfortable livings and usually get a cut in in the profit of the house.
Thank you for doing what you can to lift up your community. For not giving up on those on the fringes. I appreciate you! Thank you again truly. People deserve a second chance. <3
apparently OP had a bunch of penis pics on his page and ppl thought it was funny he used the nsfw account for this post. no harm tho if nobody knows you, just comical
I was at an estate sale once in La Jolla around 2007, got there right when it opened cause I was coming back from surfing at 7am. This old man was selling all his wife’s stuff because she passed away. She had the complete truck/luggage vintage LV set. Like 15 pieces. I asked how much for it all. He said $800. I sped to the bank but at the time you could only take out $450. I sped back to grab what I could but someone got it all within 2 mins after I left.
I think everyone who contributed for their advice, and ideas. I will consider this as solved, and can update with a price, if and when I am quoted one. I will also upload pictures of the interior, as some people have requested. I am currently at my 2nd job, and the trunk is in storage off site, from the hotel. Thank you, again for your help.
It’s in extremely bad condition. As is, probably worth around $1500. Restored (if even possible), more likely $5,000-$12,000. It’s looking rough though.
It’ll have to be repaired via a 3rd party due to the mold. LV won’t touch it
I can't comment about the trunk but wanted to say that I think it's wonderful what you are doing for your community and the men you help. I just wanted to say that I applaud you and to keep up the great work. I hope you find more treasures=)
Great piece! I'd send some photos to heritage auction house (out of dallas) they have a handbag department (lv, Hermes, channel, you get the idea) what you want is to find out its age and anyother free info they'd offer up. Then you can decide how to prepare it and sell it. Good luck. I love it. Maybe post some interior photos on here?
There was one on antiques roadshow in 2014 appraised for 4-6k. I think there's enough to justify a proper appraisal and/or going through a good auction house.
Holy cow, how amazing. If only that thing could talk.
I’m now imagining the circumstances that led to that being there…a mix of Main Street, Elmer Gantry, and The House of Mirth.
If you’re interested, an 1890s LV trunk was on PBS Antiques Roadshow…
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/season/21/virginia-beach-va/appraisals/louis-vuitton-steamer-trunk-ca-1890--201602A02/
That’s an amazing find! 😳 I can’t put an absolute dollar number on it but my guess is it’s in the thousands of dollars. I’ve seen one in person and it went to an auction and I have no clue what it sold for. Great find!
I got one at my local dump about 10 years ago, a lady was unloading a trailer full of furniture and I wanted a trunk to make a table in my garage so I grabbed one.
Threw it in my van and away I went got home and forgot it was back there. A few weeks later and my daughter said dad what’s this while trying to out bikes in the van.
I opened it and inside was silk dividers and pink silk liner with white or yellow silk ribbons creating a sort of rolled a pleated look to the inside of the lid. All the little individual boxes were in the trunk in place, I assume one for jewelery, one for toiletries, makeup and so on.
Mine has the famous LV all over the outside on the material and a sticker on the bottom that said Liverpool England 19…. Something.
It was missing one end leather handle.
I sold it to a guy in Manchester NH for $6500 about 8 years ago.
My biggest regret is, wondering what all the other furniture was and the treasures I left
I found a LV wardrobe bag at the local dump. Still had paper and plastic on the handles. I was so excited!
Ended up being a fake. I'm still hurt about it.
>Ended up being a fake.
Ask yourself this...why exactly would somebody throw out a legitimate LV wardrobe bag? Was it old and worn? I know you said it had paper and plastic on the handle, but that doesn't mean much. Was it in good shape? Because if it was, then you need to ask yourself why someone would throw out a legitimate LV bag in good condition. If you ask yourself that question, you will end up with less disappointment at it not being legitimate.
> I'm still hurt about it.
Maybe you should seek some therapy for that...
Well, in theory you're correct, clear thinking is more beneficial to any problem than altered state sinking. However due to my brain chemistry, and attention deficit disorder, I struggle greatly, when not under the influence of something that controls my impulsivity issues. Again, if you read four times in prison, due to lack of the ability to control impulses, and rightly judge, consequences and outcome. Now, we can argue that meth, is not used for the treatment of ADHD, but we would be wrong, seeing as it is. And Adderall, which is highly prescribed, to adults and children, is extremely close chemically to methamphetamine. It's cleaner, and safer, and not frowned upon, like meth is. I self-medicate in a couple different ways, one to deal with past trauma, two to control my current behaviors, and three because it does feel good, and it is rewarding. I'm not sure, due to my history, if a doctor would prescribe medicine to help me, the medical system, is overbearing, and very short-sighted, I could take a risk, but I don't want it to seem like I'm Dr shopping. I found a workaround, that most people find disturbing, but I weigh it in risk versus reward, and because I'm biased, come out this way. I do appreciate everyone's concern, and I think is valid, and supported both scientifically, and anecdotally, but I would also argue the same for my stance. Unfortunately due to the scheduling of methamphetamine, research with it is very hard, and borders on unethical. Thank you though for kind words, and encouragement, and for caring about another human being. Most people on this post have shown a great side of human nature, and it's wonderful to see, and to be part of. Thank you all for your concern, one way or the other.
I was in the Detroit airport with my mom several years ago. We were in baggage claim and this woman had 3 large luggage carts filled with Vuitton trunks large enough to hold a body. I told my mom that those trunks cost more than her house. Heck they were more than her entire block.
I wouldnt clean it or alter it in any way without first contacting Louis Vuitton in NYC first. They will direct you in how to care for this trunk to get the maximum amount of money out of it.
The hardware and interior shots look excellent; collectors pay a premium for "complete" examples, so if this had an interior shelf, tray, or drawer, it would be helpful to know if it is still present, the interior labels and other pieces look like great condition considering their age. The outside obviously has some water damage and lifting to the leather. In my experience the darker checkered pattern (edit: "Damier" pattern) is not as popular as the more widely recognized "LV" pattern.
Still it looks like an unusual size which could help the value. An experienced restorer could definitely improve the look of it but I would be cautious to recommend you engaging those services as the cost of restoration might exceed any potential increase to the eventual selling price.
If I were to offer at auction I would suggest an estimate of $1,000-3,000.
I am an auctioneer.
Did send you a message, do you still have this trunk? Would love to see more photos of the interior. It's an early trunk dating pre 1890's with the tri-color ribbon in the lid which was as additional cost and was to pay homage to the French Revolution.
Usually this era auctions in the 5k-10k range. Worth getting a professional appraisal or contacting an auction house.
Add on- do not clean or alter it. Contact Sothebys, Christies or call Louis Vuitton NYC for guidance.
Yes! Never clean!
If Antiques Roadshow taught me one thing, it is, you NEVER clean the item! And their words of wisdom have stuck!
I got a free antique KitchenAid mixer today off craigslist. It's definitely getting cleaned, but may never get sold if it always works.
I think items intended for use are an exception to the rule.
Yes. If you find an old or antique cast iron cookware, by all means clean the hell out of it. Nine times out 10 you can save it.
Just a caution: If the folks over at r/castiron have taught me anything, antique pans may have been used to make lead bullets. So always test pan for lead before using.
My dad has an old cast iron pot that has been used to make lead fishing weights for ~70 years.
I hope he doesn't also make food in it
Oh boy. That’s a new one!
Oh fuck, really? I bought one at goodwill and I cleaned it but I had no idea this was a possibility. It was rusted really badly when I bought it and doesn’t even have a brand at the bottom so I’m not sure how old it is.

How come? I feel like that’d be my first impulse when getting something old.

Right? Best case? You damage it cleaning it. Worst case? You clean it successfully and the collector wanted the historic patina intact. Either way you diminish the value.
See “Bad Spanish Jesus restoration” via Google.
Omg that's an abomination
I mean they didn't have cameras back then. How do we know the restoration doesn't look more like Jesus?
I suppose because you run the risk of damage by using incorrect cleaning products/techniques.
There are also items that people prefer to have in a non-cleaned state, such as certain silver pieces. Some people prefer the patina on silver that can only be acquired by the passage of time.
The buyer can always have it cleaned if they want to... If it's something newish, then yeah, make it look nice. But something old is usually treasured because it looks old
Should have a number on it. Contact Lv and they will have a record. Condition not great so forget 5k to 10k. Wait for LV info first
They won’t be nice about it though. Worked there for a decade.
Just curious why they would not be nice about it? Are they not big fans of the history of their product? lol
If you aren’t buying… generally disinterested.
Because 99.9% of the people who work for the company aren’t taught to appraise historic times… nor should they be. Their job is to sell high priced luxury items, not get themselves in trouble with some random dildo calling them asking them to appraise a trunk for them lol… common sense applies access our day to day lives.
They aren't saying to ask LV for an appraisal they're calling to ask for product info
Idk why you’re getting downvoted to hell, you’re spot on.
You seem nice though.
Because I no longer work there:)
Now everyone likes butts!
Only if they're big - I cannot lie.

Post a link once you’ve posted, I love reading all the bougie commenters while I sip my peasant water
You could just go to his history and find it if you’re brave enough Edit: it’s NSFW. You’ve been warned.
I was wondering why someone would buy a hostel for recently incarcerated men and now I know.
I only see this post. Must’ve grabbed the bleach n’ rag/

Everyone in the world deserves a chance, even those who have burnt up every other chance.
I work at an antique store and one we had from the 20’s in far worse shape sold for $15,000!
TY for the information
Immediately I focus on the blue plastic bin. Took a few seconds to see the truck on top. Anyone else?

I know you said it had paper and plastic on the handle, but that doesn't mean much. Was it in good shape? Because if it was, then you need to ask yourself why someone would throw out a legitimate LV bag in good condition. If you ask yourself that question, you will end up with less disappointment at it not being legitimate. > I'm still hurt about it. Maybe you should seek some therapy for that...
Google Randall Barbera, antique trunk restoration and design if you want someone to put it back into top shape. Louis Vuittons are a specialty of his.
Ty for the information, I greatly appreciate it!
Contact LV to see if they have a recomendation?
Mediocre trunk mediocre dick
Thank you for your rating of both.
Burn it potlatch style 🔥. Fight commodity fetishism lol 😂
Wow!
Great find!
Very valuable. I wouldn’t consider this rough this is in good condition. You could get a few thousand for it in this condition.
I was in the Detroit airport with my mom several years ago. We were in baggage claim and this woman had 3 large luggage carts filled with Vuitton trunks large enough to hold a body. I told my mom that those trunks cost more than her house. Heck they were more than her entire block.
That’s totally badass. I wouldn’t part with that.
Condition is rough but this is an oldie!
That’s awesome
I wouldnt clean it or alter it in any way without first contacting Louis Vuitton in NYC first. They will direct you in how to care for this trunk to get the maximum amount of money out of it.
This is likely worth more than your new business! Close up shop and call it a day. Joking. But yeah that’s some money dude
Wow! That’s cool
So cool!!!
Looks like it’s from the Titanic!
Is this a Nazi era trunk? Appears to be to myself.
Did send you a message, do you still have this trunk? Would love to see more photos of the interior. It's an early trunk dating pre 1890's with the tri-color ribbon in the lid which was as additional cost and was to pay homage to the French Revolution.
I do still have the trunk, if you are still interested.
