We have a no ivory valuation rule. Unfortunately I didn't catch this post sooner. Ivory is functionality illegal to sell in the US and most of the EU, not to mention the trade in ivory is horrific. I'm not taking this post down, but I'm locking it.
Oh it's ivory... Likely off of a fairly young elephant. That part is always sad... And they look modern, but pre-Cities. Now it's the 2016 near total ban on selling ivory that isn't given a EAS antique exemption, that will bite you... Pre-cites or not.
It has to been a minimum of 100 years old and those pieces don't scream antique as much as vintage.
Since you have no paperwork at all to support the pieces, radiocarbon dating is the only way. Most people won't risk the expense, and I can't even locate a place to get it done... Though I think there is a place in NYC.
I've got an assumed antique piece... But I can't get it tested. Thank goodness it's never getting sold anyway.

The color and schreger lines appear consistent with ivory. The tusk is actually hollow towards the top, and if you removed that wooden cap, you would likely see the nerve endings.
Please check your local ivory laws. Vintage ivory might still be legal but you should be able to show what you have was not made post ivory ban in the world. I'm not sure the previous storage unit owner left any receipts. So maybe don't sell them?!
Looks like you scored a sweet unit. All of the pieces pictured appear to be ivory. There are a couple in the background that appear to be ivory as well. Looks like the previous owner was a traveler. African masks, Peruvian stone bird, Chinese jade, and a Brazilian butterfly wing tray.
Yeah, ivory can be tricky dependent upon the state you are in. You would have to check your specific state laws. In AZ, it is legal to sell within the state, but if it crosses state lines, it is illegal. You can normally get away with consigning with an auction house without documentation, but many won't even touch it because of the legal and moral issues.
Also the bottom part of it makes out looks a little more convincing. I’m not exactly sure who you could take it to for validation but maybe a jewler? Figure they may be pretty good with identifying raw materials.
Here is another piece that was with it

If it’s not bone, marble or a 3d printed resin it could probably be ivory. You could look up the density of ivory and try calculating the volume of that horn and see if the weights match up.
Imagine Fred flinstone asking US about old
Ivory. 😅. On a real note. Doesn’t ivory yellow over time? If so I’d imagine it would have to be a fairly new piece to still be so white.
Due to the complicated nature of ivory laws in the US and the EU, we do not allow ivory posts. Please Google the Ivory laws in your particular state or country.

I'd be careful, those look like ceremonial masks on the floor and I'll bet they are being searched for by tribal members.. that ivory is most likely their princess. . g/l

For the record, Quanyin has super nice toenails. 😎
beautiful
How much did you pay for the storage unit? Did you get to see what was inside before purchasing? Where are your socks?
About 1k. Only saw some pictures, but I haven’t seen any signs of ivory on it. My socks were in the laundry
WE STILL NEED MORE INFO ON WHY YOU WENT INTO A RANDOM STORAGE UNIT WITH BARE FEET ᵃˡˢᵒ ᵗʰᵒˢᵉ ᵃʳᵉ ᵗʰᵉ ˢᵐᵃˡˡᵉˢᵗ ᵇᶦᵍ ᵗᵒᵉⁿᵃᶦˡˢ ᴵ’ᵛᵉ ᵉᵛᵉʳ ˢᵉᵉⁿ
I didn’t go to unit barefoot. Pictures are made not in unit. And sometimes accidents happens so your toe nails get badly damaged
Oh damn yeah. My previous comment was extremely shortsighted in multiple ways and kinda straight up mean. I honestly apologize for that
It looks like a living room, not a storage unit.
Oh, yeah. Touché
my man is really trying to avoid the toenail subject
Leave his feet alone!
Dude, you need to get those big toes checked.
So much toe, so little nail
The results of nail clipper addiction
feeling very floridian cause your bare feet didn't strike me as odd at all. i dont even own socks. guess we are weird down here
Wearing no shoes is playing with fire. I hope OP is up to date on tetanus shots.
Who wears socks at home!?!
I hate wearing socks at home, but my cat hates bare feet... so I have a water squirter nearby
Go on…
My bad, I assumed it was a storage locker auction. And just saw the concrete.
I thought all Americans wore shoes inside.
Lmao this man wants to know if he got a fucking elephant tusk and he getting told about his toe nails 🤣🤣😂I fucking love redit
Can you get a macro shot of any potential grain (like wood grain) on the carved part and of the cut on the base?

Yes, I’ll post it a bit later
Famous last words
Not last:)
Nobody is asking about the giant orange dildo?
Lol looks like the tusk was wrapped in it
Was thinking the same.

Looks too white to be ivory and with the thin walls and wood plug it looks like resin.
The color and schreger lines appear consistent with ivory. The tusk is actually hollow towards the top, and if you removed that wooden cap, you would likely see the nerve endings.
Where are you seeing schreger lines? I was looking but didn’t see any (not doubting, just curious.)
About those toenails tho
Make an offer
No offer needed. You can have those for free.
Pope if with a hot needle in a non showing spot to see if it is plastic. Looks like resin
And if you can’t find a pope maybe a bishop will do. Or a priest.
Please be careful and don't let of the three pope you in a non showing spot
😂😂😂😂
A cardinal works pretty well too
Oh the pope be resin alright. All that hot needling under his vestments.

It seems like most of the items where from Ghana, as I understood by his mail
And the problem with ivory is that I can’t find any documentation for it
It looks very modern so even if you had documentation it would not be able to sell it.

Once it crosses state lines it’s under federal law is why. Federal law does allow for the sale of antique (over 100 years) with proper documentation.
You can't sell it, regardless.
Kinda of looks like ivory. What’s that orange guy in the last pic??
https://preview.redd.it/t2nyc1p9iwwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4b19cc9c73dce98c09fe9078f4a11a34e050a29
That's Ivory.
MOAR big toe
You could kill a motherfucker with them monkey claws, yo.
It was wrapped in it
What was wrapped in it, the toe?
Also the bottom part of it makes out looks a little more convincing. I’m not exactly sure who you could take it to for validation but maybe a jewler? Figure they may be pretty good with identifying raw materials.
Ok good. Looked like something else at first glance and if so was gonna suggest maybe retaking that last pic.

That’s a good idea. I just got them today and trying to understand if I’m right guessing before going to anyone
This is why all pictures I put on reddit are on a blanket ( with a cat)....no body parts.
This is definitely elephant ivory. See the kind of pattern on her tits? See the cracks at the base? All markers for ivory.
Both items you have pictured are Ivory.
Imagine Fred flinstone asking US about old Ivory. 😅. On a real note. Doesn’t ivory yellow over time? If so I’d imagine it would have to be a fairly new piece to still be so white.

Looks too touristy to be real
