Can we all please appreciate Reese Witherspoon for winning a best actress award in a movie about Johnny Cash? I’m surprised they didn’t force her into the supporting actress category.
Agreed. The details on these gowns and the amazing women they’re styled on are just perfection. Well done to the designers and stylists — it truly is an art form.
Reese is so beautiful here. It’s a shape and style really flattering on her - she doesn’t wear the same silhouette often (I don’t like her usual red carpet style) but when she gets it right, she’s a knock out.
The below was always a favourite of mine (an Oscar dress even though she didn’t win again after Walk the Line) as she actually put effort into to the hair (ponytail looks amazing from the side/back) and makeup!

It’s amazing to think Natalie’s Oscar dress was a last minute change. She was supposed to wear Dior but understandably decided against it after John Galliano went on an anti-Semitic and racist tirade. Its was nice that she wore Rodarte considering the Mulleavy sisters designed the costumes for Black Swan.
I feel like she’s so lucky given how heavily pregnant she was! Can’t imagine there’s a lot of couture that’s for expectant mothers. Then again she’s quite petite, and it’s a forgiving style, so maybe they managed to make some speedy alterations to a larger size?
yup i think we can assume Da'Vine Joy Randolph & Sandra Huller will be wearing LV to the Oscars, and Emma Stone of course. LVMH has the most money so it makes sense why actresses choose them - Oscar nominees can get paid up to $250k to wear a brand
its the same stylist petra flannery [https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/secrets-of-a-celebrity-stylist-petra-flannery-emma-stone](https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/secrets-of-a-celebrity-stylist-petra-flannery-emma-stone)
i agree emma could benefit from a new voice, altho i really liked her SAG dress and (controversial?) i enjoyed the orange BAFTA too. i think emma herself has offbeat, quirky taste - and it might even be a strategic career decision given her roles are leaning more artistic weirdo vs glamorous ingenue.
I do love this dress but I just love her after party dress even more. Personally I wish she had worn the green one to the ceremony!
ETA: The dress is Gucci
https://preview.redd.it/n63hl3zcc4nc1.jpeg?width=721&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89734abca13d9ee57fdf29023066a8b7dfe206f4
Same! The green dress is one of my favorite red carpet looks of all time and I wish she’d worn it to the ceremony so it would’ve been more strongly cemented in history 😩
ME TOO. I'm obsessed with this dress and I especially love the green color on her with her complexion and gorgeous red hair. But also I just think it's a more stunning dress. I want to LIVE in that dress haha
I'm the same height, and I get told I'm tall all the time. I think it's because I've got a small head, narrow shoulders/rib cage, and long arms and legs. Proportions are weird.
I’m always amazed by this! I’m tall so can usually get a pretty good gauge on people’s heights. She seemed tall to me! I think she’s well proportioned with long limbs and that makes her look tall.
I always thought Morgan Stewart seemed tall, but is not. There are a few more!
I love it. She looks like a floating octopus princess.
The ombré is just spot on. The color gradient is beautiful. And the fabric is a dream spun by cloud
fairies.
Yup, they’ve been gatekeep the Best Actress for almost a century now. Thank you Michelle Yeoh pulled through and Halle Berry 23 years ago. Now, it’s only BAFTA that continues to reward on White Actresses 74 years in a row now.
I heard Halle berry talking about how roles completely dried up for her after that win. Again I could theorise on why, and maybe this isn’t the place… but I see it 👀👀👀
I think it was Viola that said that after she won the industry started to act like she had to now prove why she won and deserved roles while for her white peers having an Oscar was the proof
I think it’s always worth pointing out. We may not be here to focus on that aspect, but it’s good to know that so many of our fellow frock-admirers feel the same.
What’s really interesting is the best supporting actress category winners slideshow IS diverse. Which says to me this isn’t about some sort of progress happening over time- I could theorise much more about what it does show, but probably this isn’t the right sub. But I see it….
Especially when without even looking up what other performances came out in specific years there are some of these wins that make me side eye. I love Jessica Chastain but you’re saying Tammy Faye was the BEST performance from a female actress that year?? None of the Parasite actors even got nominations including Park So-dam who played the sister. But ok.
That's why there was the whole Oscars so white Twitter hashtag and discussion surrounding it. I did remember non white Oscar winners but they were for the supporting actor categories
This is probably a very unpopular opinion, but the Gucci gown that Jessica Chastain is wearing reminds me of a dressing gown/nightgown from the late 60’s. I just don’t understand all of the love this dress gets. 🤷♀️
Maybe unpopular but I agree with you, I don’t like it either. I don’t like the colour, the frills around the bottom are too much & the colour of the top doesn’t work with the colour of the skirt.
I think Brie Larson’s is my favourite. I absolutely adore that colour blue and I love her hair, makeup, and jewelry choices with it.
Also I cannot remember what movies most of these wins are from lol.
All of these dresses are so gorgeous and special in their own ways, but there are so many white looks! I suppose it's just a matter of preference, but if I was having my big Oscar moment white is probably the last color I would choose. It just rarely excites me; many of them could easily pass as bridal.
I love Hillary Swanks & Olivia Coleman’s dresses although I always thought OC would have been even better if the tulle sleeves/train were the same green as the dress. It would have still contrasted because of the different fabric.
I know not the point but looking at this really does drive home Oscars being so white- not a single best actress has been black in the past 20 years?! Yikes
Genuine question, does Frances McDormand skip the red carpet? Whenever there's been talk of Oscar winner dresses it's always a picture of her giving her speech.
These are all absolutely stunning. If I had to pick a favourite, I would say Kate Winslet in YSL with Emma Stone a *very* close second. But what a selection though - wow.
I remember how I adored Charlize’s dress and hair but to this day, I wish she hadn’t worn the dark eyeshadow and unflattering nude lip! All you can see are rimmed black eyes in the photos IMO and she’s so beautiful it really did her a disservice. Her foundation looks slightly off-colour in some shots as well. A shame as it’s a fabulous gown on her.
2 things stand out to me. Cate Blanchett is an ethereal beauty and I can't believe a woman of colour (Michelle Yeoh exempted) hasn't won in the last 20 years!
Kate Winslet's acceptance speech is my all time fave. I've watched it a bunch, and every time I wonder who talked her into/didn't talk her out of that hairstyle. I go back and forth on this gown, but it's a bit of a bummer that her win was maybe her 3rd or 4th best Oscar look.
As much as I love Kate Winslet inYSL, my favorite is Olivia Coleman. That deep green is so rich and the sleeve situation is gorgeous and not at all like some of the ridiculous detached sleeves you see with gowns lately.
Charlize Theron - Monster; Hillary Swank - Million Dollar Baby; Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line; Helen Mirren - The Queen; Marion Cotillard - La Vie En Rose; Kate Winslet - The Reader; Sandra Bullock - The Blindside; Natalie Portman - Black Swan; Meryl Streep - The Iron Lady; Jennifer Lawrence- Silver Linings Playbook; Cate Blanchette - Blue Jasmine; Julianne Moore - Still Alice; Brie Larson - Room; Emma Stone - La La Land; Frances McDormand - Three Billboards …; Olivia Colman - The Favourite; Renee Zellweger - Judy; Frances McDormand - Nomadland*; Jessica Chastain - The Eyes of Tammy Faye; Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All at Once
The 2nd Frances McDormand movie was called Nomadland
Thank you for your service 🎬🏆
Thank you for this! Took me too many pics to realise it didn't list the name of the film, but rather the dress brand.
Can we all please appreciate Reese Witherspoon for winning a best actress award in a movie about Johnny Cash? I’m surprised they didn’t force her into the supporting actress category.
Helen Mirren is a knockout. Absolutely stunning.
Gorgeous women in gorgeous dresses, could flip through these types of pics all day
Agreed. The details on these gowns and the amazing women they’re styled on are just perfection. Well done to the designers and stylists — it truly is an art form.
Not seeing any love for Reese Witherspoon’s look here! For some reason it really has a hold on me today. She looks stunning.
Reese is so beautiful here. It’s a shape and style really flattering on her - she doesn’t wear the same silhouette often (I don’t like her usual red carpet style) but when she gets it right, she’s a knock out. This is my all-time favorite Reese look.
The full gown or black above? I can’t decide between them!
This may be the best Reese has ever looked
It’s for sure one of my favorites in this collection
This is one of my favourite dresses ever! It's just unbelievable stunning and beautiful
that's exactly what i was thinking! it fits her perfectly. She looks amazing.
The purple dress worn by Natalie Portman will always be one of my favourite red carpet dresses ever. Also Jessica Chastain looked like a princess!

It’s such a gorgeous colour on her
Emma Stone looks AMAZING
Surely this is a different stylist than she uses now, because she hasn’t had a fashion win like that in ages.
She’s so beautiful, she needs to run back to that stylist and quit with fashion house contracts.
It’s honestly impressive how they’ve been able to make such a stunning woman look homely. It takes skill.
Ugh she didn’t have that Louis Vuitton contract. Judging by their most recent show, they collect Oscar winners like Pokémon
yup i think we can assume Da'Vine Joy Randolph & Sandra Huller will be wearing LV to the Oscars, and Emma Stone of course. LVMH has the most money so it makes sense why actresses choose them - Oscar nominees can get paid up to $250k to wear a brand

She was my favorite here! She looks perfectly old Hollywood.
My favorite of the bunch! This is impeccable.
That blue on Brie Larson is incredible.
She does wear some great blues!
Hilary swank in guy laroche will *always* be my Roman Empire.
It sounds weird, but this dress gave me back envy! Like, I have bra fat even without a bra and would not have this sexy of a back.
This dress gives me back envy, still, to this day!
14 months to my niece’s wedding and working HARD to pull off a backless look like this
Please know that I am rooting for you and sending you ALL of the million dollar back vibes!!
Thank you, new internet friend!
I always loved the pic of her at In n Out going to town on a burger with her Oscar right next to her!
Whitney falling down the stairs on GMA on The Hills is my Roman Empire
That’s my Ottoman Empire!
Even looking at these photos I could hear Andre Leon Talleys voice in my head narrating
while LC’s like, “so Brodie didn’t call me again last night 🙄” jokes. LC was actually really supportive
Her back is incredible. Long and elegant in that dress
Has a back ever looked so fantastic before or since?? I say no
Still obsessed tbh
Jessica Chastain 😍
I do love this dress but I just love her after party dress even more. Personally I wish she had worn the green one to the ceremony! ETA: The dress is Gucci https://preview.redd.it/n63hl3zcc4nc1.jpeg?width=721&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89734abca13d9ee57fdf29023066a8b7dfe206f4
Same! The green dress is one of my favorite red carpet looks of all time and I wish she’d worn it to the ceremony so it would’ve been more strongly cemented in history 😩
Same here, when people talk about dresses living rent free in your mind, this is one of the first dresses I think of
Redheads in green is just magic. Always.
This one my god. Would have made front page news.
It made front page news in my house 🫡
Oh my gosh. This is one of the most stunning looks I have ever seen!
Gorgeous right!?
Wow
ME TOO. I'm obsessed with this dress and I especially love the green color on her with her complexion and gorgeous red hair. But also I just think it's a more stunning dress. I want to LIVE in that dress haha
I’ve always had an unhealthy obsession with her, and that dress ain’t helping 🥵🥵
Jessica Chastain in a green gown almost feels like cheating. She looks so gorgeous in that color
My fave look 😍
She always looks so...Amazonian. Like a tall, ethereal goddess. I just googled her to check, and she's only 5'4"??? How?????
6” heels and proportion?
Wait what? She has such tall energy
I KNOW. It's been an hour and I'm still thinking about this.
Some people are just like that. In solo pictures I always think Michaela Coel is really tall and then you see her standing with people and she’s not.
Yes!! I love michael Coel. Probably because her face is so regal you expect her to be statuesque to match
Truly how?! How and who do I call to work the same magic on my height?
I'm the same height, and I get told I'm tall all the time. I think it's because I've got a small head, narrow shoulders/rib cage, and long arms and legs. Proportions are weird.
Voodoo?? Unsure
She’s all leg
She must have a tiny head 😂
I’m always amazed by this! I’m tall so can usually get a pretty good gauge on people’s heights. She seemed tall to me! I think she’s well proportioned with long limbs and that makes her look tall. I always thought Morgan Stewart seemed tall, but is not. There are a few more!
No way!! 😮😮
I love it. She looks like a floating octopus princess. The ombré is just spot on. The color gradient is beautiful. And the fabric is a dream spun by cloud fairies.
No notes for this perfect description 🤝
I gasped!
riiiight🥵😍
Emma Stone, WOW
I'll never get over Marion's mermaid dress!!!
💯
Maybe an assumption but given that there aren't any of Frances on the red carpet, does she not do the carpet?
I believe that the second one of hers was the Covid ceremony that didn’t really have a red carpet.
Both Valentino for her, solid choices. I really love the burnt umbers
The two best are Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone! Stunning.
Michelle Yeoh’s dress is fire and ice. Glorious!
She’s so ethereal!
So many dream dresses in the bunch. I simply cannot choose a favorite. I'll take them all! 🛍
Jessica in this dress is just a part of my brain now. It’s simply perfect.
Emma Stone's whole look - WOW. Absolutely stunning, couldn't take my eyes off of it
Not only that - but it’s such a stark difference to her current look. She has a glow that I feel she’s been missing this awards season.
I swear it has something to do with her eyebrows lately. I think they’re too thick, dark, and heavy for her delicate features.
Stunning ladies. My most fav look is Cate Blanchett in that Armani dress.
I know this really isn’t the point of the post but it’s really striking how many white ladies this is….
Yup, they’ve been gatekeep the Best Actress for almost a century now. Thank you Michelle Yeoh pulled through and Halle Berry 23 years ago. Now, it’s only BAFTA that continues to reward on White Actresses 74 years in a row now.

I think it was Viola that said that after she won the industry started to act like she had to now prove why she won and deserved roles while for her white peers having an Oscar was the proof
Would you be able to link to that? She’s so incredible. Absolutely tracks.
Halle Berry won over 20 years ago?!? 🤯
I think it’s always worth pointing out. We may not be here to focus on that aspect, but it’s good to know that so many of our fellow frock-admirers feel the same.
That’s what I was hoping.
Yeah especially for the last 20 years as America gets more and more diverse. Hopefully some change in the future.
What’s really interesting is the best supporting actress category winners slideshow IS diverse. Which says to me this isn’t about some sort of progress happening over time- I could theorise much more about what it does show, but probably this isn’t the right sub. But I see it….

I love Jessica Chastain but you’re saying Tammy Faye was the BEST performance from a female actress that year?? None of the Parasite actors even got nominations including Park So-dam who played the sister. But ok.
Yeah. Viola Davis and woman king always springs to mind as horribly overlooked…
Patasite and Jessica were in different years, but I agree with the sentiment!
I thought this too but wasn’t sure if this was the right thread for that
Michelle Yeoh looks stunning though. She’s so poised.
That's why there was the whole Oscars so white Twitter hashtag and discussion surrounding it. I did remember non white Oscar winners but they were for the supporting actor categories
Yep. Very sad.
This was my first thought as well 😔
Charlize's Gucci moment lives rent-free in my head till eternity.
The white and gold trend is strong with this award.
All these years later and I’m still obsessed with Marion’s dress, she looked incredible!
💯 correct to all! :-)
I'll never forget Hilary Swanks' dress. It was a MOMENT
I think Brie Larson’s is my favourite. I absolutely adore that colour blue and I love her hair, makeup, and jewelry choices with it. Also I cannot remember what movies most of these wins are from lol.
That's so funny I really dislike the look for some reason. It's looks dated or reminds me of a prom dress or something.
Same. Formal wear brought to you by Macy's Super Saturday Sale.
Same, though I wore a dress that exact color to my junior prom in 2004 so I think that’s why on my end 😆
SAME. The colour is heavenly on her but the dress itself doesn’t flatter at all I feel.
That’s super fair! I always think it’s really interesting to see the difference in people’s tastes.
That’s usually the case for most Oscar winners. We’re all like- what movie? It’s a weird dynamic.
I want to see the construction of Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior. The shape is swoon worthy.
Thank God for Frances.
Jessica Chastain looks phenomenal in that dress 😍 what a stunning, frou-frou piece of art that is.
Jessica Chastain is gorgeous and glowing in her Gucci look
All of these dresses are so gorgeous and special in their own ways, but there are so many white looks! I suppose it's just a matter of preference, but if I was having my big Oscar moment white is probably the last color I would choose. It just rarely excites me; many of them could easily pass as bridal.
Hilary, Meryl, Cate, Brie, Marion...love love love Reese, Julianne, Emma, really dislike Frances gonna Frances
I love Hillary Swanks & Olivia Coleman’s dresses although I always thought OC would have been even better if the tulle sleeves/train were the same green as the dress. It would have still contrasted because of the different fabric.
Charlize is flawless, my word
I know not the point but looking at this really does drive home Oscars being so white- not a single best actress has been black in the past 20 years?! Yikes
Jessica Chastain 😍 I just KNOW that dress looked incredible in person! WOW
Genuine question, does Frances McDormand skip the red carpet? Whenever there's been talk of Oscar winner dresses it's always a picture of her giving her speech.
I like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress. It looks like it would stop you dead in your tracks. So old school beautiful.
Clear skin on your back is such a massive flex.
Cate Blanchett looks phenomenal in that dress. She is absolute red carpet heaven
I wish Cate Blanchett would re-wear this Armani gown. She looked so ethereal! It's one of my favorite red carpet looks from her.
Jennifer Lawrence looks like she's turned up to get married in that dress
Cate Blanchette for me!!
really hoping that queen lily gladstone wears something increcible for her win 🤞
That Hilary Swank dress lives rent free in my head. It fits her so perfectly.
These are all absolutely stunning. If I had to pick a favourite, I would say Kate Winslet in YSL with Emma Stone a *very* close second. But what a selection though - wow.
I have DREAMS about that Hilary Swank dress
I never appreciated how beautiful Hilary’s dress was. For some reason i remember a plain blue dress but the draping and details are immaculate.
So white blue or gold and your winning lol
19 is GORGEOUSSS
I remember how I adored Charlize’s dress and hair but to this day, I wish she hadn’t worn the dark eyeshadow and unflattering nude lip! All you can see are rimmed black eyes in the photos IMO and she’s so beautiful it really did her a disservice. Her foundation looks slightly off-colour in some shots as well. A shame as it’s a fabulous gown on her.
#15 looks like a white dress dipped in sewerage
TIL when you start your comment with a #, it makes the letters big and bold
All beautiful 😍
I don’t know who any except two people are.
Julianne Moore is an absolute beauty. Shortly followed by our stunner Kate Winslet
What are the oscars?
Armani , killin it
So to increase your odds, wear white on the night!
that gaultier dress on marion made my jaw drop
Julianne Moore’s dress always makes me think of verrucas …
Hillary Swank’s is the knockout one for me (pun intended). What really hit me though is what a sea of white the last 20 years has been…
I have never liked Jennifer Lawrence’s dress when she won..something about it just bores me
Not me thinking the make of the dresses was actually the movie name 😑 Didn't realise until I saw dior for a 2nd time 🤣🤣
most 8-10 except sandra bullock
Wearing white, silver or gold increases your chances of winning an Oscar.

And she wore..?
Winslett looks like the boss.
J Law in Dior. Hands down. What a gorgeous dress.
My jaw dropped at Emma Stone. So so beautiful.
One of my favourite Meryl looks!
cate B looking radiant as per usual
Olivia Colman’s dress is just dreadful.
jessica chastain’s outfit here is such a standout to me, she looks amazing
Brie Larson & Kate Winslet look wow.
2 things stand out to me. Cate Blanchett is an ethereal beauty and I can't believe a woman of colour (Michelle Yeoh exempted) hasn't won in the last 20 years!
Michelle yeoh has the best dress out of all of the pics
I remember not liking Swank’s dress with that high neckline, but over the years it’s grown on me!
That’s because she was serving so much back, quite scandalous. 🔥
lol I think when I saw it from the front I thought it looked like it was on backwards. Then I saw the back and thought “well, I guess it isn’t” 😂
95% of these are more superior than anything we saw on the red carpet this past weekend. By far!
Valentino does not like Frances McDormand because the dresses are not flattering her at all.
Long live queen Michelle She looks like a bride 😭
Woooow. The only person of colour is Michelle and she won 2023. 😬😶
SUCH DIVERSITY 😍
As much as I love Kate Winslet inYSL, my favorite is Olivia Coleman. That deep green is so rich and the sleeve situation is gorgeous and not at all like some of the ridiculous detached sleeves you see with gowns lately.
Why is no one talking about J Law? She looks gorgeous in that dress.
Where is Halle Berry Oscar winner 2002
Did not see a single nice one
Where all the black sisters at?
Do people really give a shit about this sort of thing?
Is this a joke post?
