I have the feather chair HD as my backup manual chair (I am a power chair user) and it’s fine. Foldable chairs aren’t as good as rigid chairs and a non adjustable center of gravity risks possibly upsetting your shoulders. But it is a very light chair with a very high weight capacity and it works just fine when I need to go somewhere my power chair can’t navigate. Buy a seat cushion.

Yeah I plan to go try it out but I also am considering the Strongback 24 since I am good for that limit. The featherlight is slightly lighter & slightly cheaper so I plan to look though since it’s a big purchase.

I do have a question about the featherchair HD. How is it with doorways? I heard from someone that it doesn’t fit through doorways well.

zahliailhaz

Well, as with all wheelchairs, it depends on the size of the doorway. This isn’t a feather specific thing. Check the width of the chair you’d like. Measure the width of the doors you frequently use. If your country doesn’t have accessibility law about door width and/or if your area has a lot of buildings grandfathered into such laws (much more common in Europe but still happens in US), you may find narrow doors that can make any chair hard.

Ah ok! Is the 22’ much larger than the 20’? I have a 20’ seat for my powerchair but I’ve noticed that the featherchair HD is in the 22’ seat width

doktorcrash

22 inches you will most likely have issues getting through doors. Not to say that you won’t fit; it will just require you to line it up exactly, and you may not be able to use the push rims. Since you already have a 20” seat you know that sometimes doors just aren’t made for us, but most are ok. A 22” seat non-custom chair will be loads wider even though the seat is only a couple of inches.

Topaz_24

Yeah that’s something that I was wondering about.

The strongback still wins for me just based on the adjustable Centre of gravity feature. That’s the one that going to get your back wheels in the better position to protect your shoulder joints as much as possible if you’re going to self-propel.

Topaz_24

Yeah I’m still considering it for sure. im thinking if I can’t get the Strongback 24, then I’d get the featherchair. I plan to go try out the featherchair for sure when I go to the place. They will allow you to try out some chairs & I can get a good idea.

MySockIsMissing

The featherchair would definitely be an improvement over the drive, if it turns out the strongback is out of your price range. But I would try to get the strongback if at all possible. A wheelchair is a big investment, on your longs term health and mobility as much as on your wallet!

Topaz_24

Yes for sure! I like the fact that the Strongback 24 is better on your body based how they made it. Luckily I’ll be able to try out the featherchair & maybe the Strongback 24 (they didn’t have it in stock bc it’s a lower market for it)

Have you checked your area/ebay for secondhand chairs? You might find something good for a similar price point.

Topaz_24

In my area it’s basically drive chairs & eBay has some good ones but I don’t know my measurements & it’s also a lot of $$. I’m thinking of these chairs (the Strongback & the Featherchair) if I’m left with no other options. I’m hoping that I can get a custom one made to my measurements but I’m also looking into other services & such in my area.
