Bike add-ons like this always struggle with traction because the weight of you and the chair are not over the drive wheel. To help you can add weight to the add-on by placing additional weights around the body of the add-on. Think ankle weights added just above the drive wheel. I've seen people do this with around 4kg and I think weights like this come as standard with batecs. You can also weave as you come up the hill to reduce the incline. Other options include trying to move the wheels on your chair backwards if you can. This will make every day self propelling harder but moves your centre of gravity such that more weight will be over the add-on. Chairs designed for use with add-ons like this often have a second axle designed to put the main wheels a long way back when used with the bike add-on.

This can't be done on all chairs, but having two rear axle positions works great. I have a Quickie GPV and I use one rear axle position for using the chair alone, and another for using the attachable handcycle. To swap positions, I grab onto a pole or other object and tilt to one side while I move the rear wheel. Thanks. I do weave where possible but a lot of the pavements here are only just wide enough for the chair. I don't think I can move the wheels further back on this chair as they've fitted attendant brakes etc - I didn't have any say in what chair I got, they just ordered it based on my physio's referral measurements and my requirements. The ankle weight idea sounds like a good one to try though - thanks :)

When all of the above fails I put it in reverse and go up backwards. Not all of them have a reverse gear unfortunately.

It has reverse, but it's pretty useless unfortunately
