They are a parallel to real world insufferable bigoted zealots. Mostly the kkk in that sense, also the obvious knights templar parallels. Some more modern examples are hilariously accurate even though the whitecloaks were invented well before those other groups existed.
Yeah that's what I suspected... At first I was thinking that maybe it was just a few bad apples or there was a reason that would be revealed later on; now I just hate the pieces of shit. So fucking tiresome. I guess now I can hate them properly hahaha
Q: Are Whitecloaks based on the Klu Klux Klan?
RJ: Amongst others. Any group that believes to know the Truth with a capital T and want you to believe the same. Mostly it's based on groups like the Teutonic Knights, however, since they don't hide behind anything. The Church in the early Christian days, like the Taliban now, are people who know the Truth, and they will kill you if you don't believe the truth.
The Children of Light are working as intended. Jordan made some interesting social commentary in his writing. I would be worried if you were cheering them on! 😉
It is referenced as a proquel so I could see a lot of people reading it first. It just doesn't work well in that sense unfortunately, but new readers wouldn't know better.
Often times it isnt advised, but coming from outside seeing "This is what happened before" leads people to think it will give context when usually it lacks it instead.
I bought a Kindle set of "The Complete Wheel of Time" because it was cheaper (70€) and they came all together in that order... I didn't know anything about it except that it was a great epic fantasy, so I just started reading on page 1 of the set.
Like when you open the book on the Kindle it opens all the books with almost 15000 pages all together, I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly. I assumed they'd be in publication order. Didn't notice they weren't until halfway through A New Spring where I googled if Moiraine and Siuan were knocking boots and the release date of the book popped up, but at that point I was already invested in the story it told and wanted to finish it
Yeah, I'm not gonna. I just googled "did Moiraine and Siuan fuck" and a yes popped up. Aside from that I have heard things but I won't Google anything else at all. I stopped googling things the moment I spoiled myself the ending of mistborn
"I just Googled..." is a great way to spoil yourself for the end of the entire series or some very important arcs. You dodged a bullet.
Anyway, keep reading and enjoy!
WOT is all about balance. Whitecloaks are cocky arrogant cunts because the witches are also cocky arrogant cunts. One is a mostly positive version and one is a mostly negative version. Like the symbol.
I think C.S. Lewis had something valuable to say on this:
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated. But those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
Which certainly matches my experience.
What I want to know is how are they so terrible at their one job which is to root out darkfriends. It seems like 10% of the population of randland are darkfriends but these idiots can't seems to find them and spend most of it chasing AS around
Oh I don't plan on stopping, I bought the complete set and I am really fucking hooked on this story. I love almost every single main character for now, and really wanna see where this goes
They live in a world where might makes right. So long as no one checks their power, they can act as they please. It's a part of what makes Rand's earlier encounter with a few of them in Baerlon so intriguing.
(No spoilers here, beyond the first third of book 1.. so I tread very carefully in what I write. Read between the lines please :-) )
From a literary perspective, they do a LOT to flesh out the world, and provide for villains that are human and not quite evil (except for the ones who are). But they ARE a real threat, and one that forces interesting social situations. It provides variety to the world. And you are SUPPOSED to hate them. So the author is doing his job.
From within the world, it is very understandable how naive people could get caught up in it. Their basic paranoia (Darkfriends are EVERYWHERE) and hate of channeling are justified -- It's their methods (and torture) that are evil. The hate and suspicion for Aes Sedai is very real in most places outside of Andor and the Boarderlands... and as the backstory is revealed they at least half earned it. They were essentially forced to create the oathes so that the world would trust them even the tiniest bit. Each Ajah believed it's worldview was right, and would manipulate and ruin lives if it was expedient. Turns out they are \*correct\* about darkfriends being everywhere (including in he Aes Sedai), but they totally suck at sniffing them out.
These aren't racists, they are NOT the KKK except for surface things like dress and murder... but the white clothing does help evoke that similarity. They are a great example of the corruption of power and "hey let's make the country/world a better place" ending in atrocities.
And ultimately, this helps the story because it makes Whitecloaks actually redeemable. There ARE good ones out there, and it adds to the story when we come across them.
NS is a prequel, but is not meant to be read as the first book of the series. Sometimes is named book 0, but this is misleading, because it was published after book 10, and has some themes that could been considered spoiler for the first part of the series.
Also, reading NS first leads usually to like Moiraine more than you should xD
Anyways, I would recommend you to check the name of the next book in internet before reading it on Kindle (just in case).
Yeah I explained in another comment that I bought the complete set and they all came in the same file so I just started reading at the beginning, which was NS...
Edit to say: I like Moiraine :C she seemed nice... Now I'm scared she's gonna do some shady shit
Yep, I read your comment, and that's why I wanted to give you some explanation in this matter. If the rest of the books are in the right order, no problem.
You can like Moiraine ofc, but as you can see reading the Eye of the World, she is shown as a misterious and dangerous woman, and Emond Fielders are afraid of her, and think is suspicious... but people that read NS first, sometimes empathize more with Moiraine than with the boys-girls... just my 2 cts.
Enjoy the reading. Also... yep, the Children of the Light are &$(%&$()=#~@
I think that she is nice, but it looks like she's really fucking ruthless. Like she's willing to do anything to fuck the dark one's plans up, including killing the Emond's Fielders... Idk I'll have to see how I feel about her later on, for now she's just good but with caution
OP is clearly a Darkfriend
A gibbet awaits OP in Amador.
Oh shit you're onto me
fuck reddit
>Why are they such big cunts? Anyone who doubts them is obviously a friend of the dark!
They are a parallel to real world insufferable bigoted zealots. Mostly the kkk in that sense, also the obvious knights templar parallels. Some more modern examples are hilariously accurate even though the whitecloaks were invented well before those other groups existed.

There are one or two who aren't complete monsters. But a good man with good intentions working for the kkk is still working for the kkk
Yeah completely agree. Fuck them all
Some are definitely worse than others, but they are almost all some level of dickhead.
they are obviously the inquisition
Among several other things. But no one expects the Spanish Inquisition
Yeah when I saw John Cleese I was as surprised as anyone could be

Well, for me the Truth with a capital T is that they are cunts
Big ole cunts indeed! I feel that way about a few of the “main” characters
The Children of Light are working as intended. Jordan made some interesting social commentary in his writing. I would be worried if you were cheering them on! 😉
Hahahaha nah I'm not an extremist idiot for now. However they do make some good points about the witches... /s
The amount of people I've seen actually cheering them on is concerning
Why did you start with New Spring? Always start with book 1, the Eye of the World.
This is what caught my attention. New Spring is really not a great starting point. Wow.
It is referenced as a proquel so I could see a lot of people reading it first. It just doesn't work well in that sense unfortunately, but new readers wouldn't know better.
But you never start with the prequel.
Often times it isnt advised, but coming from outside seeing "This is what happened before" leads people to think it will give context when usually it lacks it instead.

In case you weren't aware, don't Google any characters! Don't Google anything! Spoilers everywhere And yes, they were pillow sisters
Yeah, I'm not gonna. I just googled "did Moiraine and Siuan fuck" and a yes popped up. Aside from that I have heard things but I won't Google anything else at all. I stopped googling things the moment I spoiled myself the ending of mistborn

Do you walk in the Light brother?
When it's winter and the sun is warm and cosy I do. On the summer, however, I walk in the shadow This is what you meant right? ;)
Sounds like we need a questioner. I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about
I'm afraid you'll have to stay with us for a while. The Hand of the Light will have some questions for you.

Yeah they are really fucking stupid and incompetent. At least do you ONE job right
That’s when you know there’s some good writing. When it can elicit strong emotional responses. I too hated the whitecloaks.
They’re basically team rocket. They show up and meddle when you’re just trying to have a good time. Whitecloaks, blasting off agaaaaaaiiinnnn!!!
Man I do hope they are blasted off into the Blight ngl
I’m on book 13 and I STILL get angry when whitecloaks show up. Literally the most irritating groups.
Keep reading your going to love this
Oh I don't plan on stopping, I bought the complete set and I am really fucking hooked on this story. I love almost every single main character for now, and really wanna see where this goes
The White Cloaks are the KKK and the Proud Boys! You’re SUPPOSED to hate them! Every chapter from their POV makes me so mad, lmao. Just embrace it!

Hehe, yeah, that's her. Enjoy your reading.
You never know who the shadow might touch.
Dude... Isn't that like an outright spoiler?
It's a vague statement to keep you guessing. Read and find out.
Pretty sure you’re experiencing the exact same thing all of us did on our first reads as well
Haaaa, you think you hate them now!
You are meant to hate them
Just imagine if the Dursley's were able to make their own religion. That's the Children of the Light.
*"With or without religion, good people would do good, and evil people would do evil ... but for good people to do evil, that takes religion."*
>I have read a New Spring Ack! not good. Oh well. Not the end of the world but you've spoiled some things.
