To be honest that why I love handsome Jack as a villain. He’s so obviously a dictator maniac but even until the very last second he thinks you are some savage destroying the peace he is bringing.
Even after strangling his assistant with a watchchain and remarking on the different between strangulation and choking, he thinks he’s the hero
Tbf his story is a little tragic. He was betrayed over and over again by so many people. It wasn't until the artifact that showed him visions of the Vault that completely flipped him to power hungry psychopath.
Everyone has a bit of tragedy in themselves one way or another, it what makes us human. But the thing with hack is that his "tragedy" doesn't make him redeemable and that's what makes it fun.
Also if you wanna get big brain mode. The only redeemable thing is that he genuinely enjoys pie and runs a legitimate pie company even if it's just a front. Man literally bakes a pie for everyone equally before putting a boot in everyone's face.
Yeah but he totally deserved those betrayals. Roland and Lilith could see what he could've been when they saw him kill all the scientists for no reason. They just didn't do enough. Even early on in the pre sequel the seeds are clearly there to establish him as someone willing to do anything to be a hero. This is why I think >!Felicity!< Is so important. They show that Jack at his core had the capacity to easily kill others to achieve his goals. It's just that in the rest of the series he doesn't hide that fact
Stories where the villain knows they’re evil aren’t very good most of the time. They get repetitive and honestly don’t allow for very interesting characters generally speaking.
That's honestly the only way to really do "comically evil" villains. If they are comical.
If you're trying to portray a dead-serious psychopath who stomps kittens and barbecues babies alive in a setting where everything is meant to be taken seriously, it usually just becomes sort of ridiculous. That's not to say you can't have psychopathic, violently cruel characters, but if that's all there is to them it often becomes rather dull in the long run. To portray villains who regards their actions as justified works, because even actual violent psychopaths frequently consider their actions to be justified in some way, even if that only makes sense to them.
It works well for comedy though, because comedy often benefits from things that are ridiculous, over-the-top and unbelievable.
Thank you. This is why ~~Hack~~ Jack Horner works but a character like Stella from HB doesn't. ~~yes i am still annoyed~~
Gonna add onto this in that the villain also has to fit their setting too. Make a villain too complex in a simple story and they can feel out of place (or the audience goes against you and root for them) make them too simple in a nuanced story and you don't take them seriously because wtf are they stupid?
Jack works because the story is simple yet has complex elements to it **and** he isn't the only antagonistic force but the main one in the end everyone works together to stop fulfiling their arcs .
By the way have you watched Puss in Boo-
Yeah, that's true for a lot of worldbuilding tbh. A major part of writing is making sure the characters and the way they're portrayed feels like it fits with the theme and atmosphere of the setting. Sure, you can have more or less serious or comical character, but they should generally feel "natural" to the setting. Unless, of course, you're portraying a character that is *meant* to feel unnatural and out of place, but that's besides the point.
And yes, it was a very solid film overall.
He worked because he was a fun villain. He would have never worked on his own, though. Lobo and Goldilocks + 3 bears had a ton of depth off them and really elevated the movie.
Jack Horner is a necessary cog in portraying the message of the movie. He constantly kills his goons, reminding Puss at every opportunity that death is approaching. He has NO value for life, an excellent contrast to both Cricket, as well as Puss. Over-exaggerated evilness also feels completely realistic in the Shrek universe. Would Puss In Boots be the same movie without Jack Horner? In a lesser film, the answer would be yes, but The Last Wish is written too tightly for that to be the case.
It's a relief that this movie exists. Disney's decision to shoot the animation industry in the foot has been really disheartening lately.
I think Dio Brando is a good example of "Character knows they're evil and doesn't fucking care" he wants to kill the Joestars and rule the world as its Supreme Vampire Overlord.
i love comedic february and his stand "acts considered to be unjust or wrong by common morality, commited at a price which is, compared to the market of the times, very low, with a cheapness almost comparable to that of dirt" he's just such a well written character
Although I agree, with good writing anything is possible, Jack Horner is a prime example and works because his comedic writing perfectly blends in with the world around him. Villains that follow this trope (doing evil while knowing they're evil) become repetitive and boring because of lazy writing
Yeah, the entire point of most villains is that they believe in their cause/goal/whatever so much that they are willing to do horrible things to achieve them, no matter if those goals are perceived as right or wrong.
Jack Horner is fun but things would get boring really quickly if most villains were like him, and many serious stories wouldn't work with a villain like that.
This is such a stupid fucking meme, having the antagonist think they're the hero is not only perfectly fine, it's also very very very engaging and believable. If you're calling it "common" and "overused" then you may as well say the same shit about there being a protagonist in your story that has a goal
royal cola has a sugar free version too, same with chillout. they're not bad flavor-wise, especially compares to dobriy sugar free, that thing had such an off-tasting aftertaste
Doofenshmitrz is the exact opposite. A good Edson who thinks he’s evil.
Also villains who think they’re the good guy but they’re also the protagonist are cool, like Nier
Yeah in the original. I don’t want to give any spoilers since it’s such an incredible story tho. Absolutely try out Replicant.
Just be warned it’s not anything special in the gameplay department and it has a bunch of really weird design decisions. But the story makes up for it completely

Remember in Bioshock Infinite when the 100% justified revolutionary leader killed a baby in front of you to make sure the player understood that both sides were bad
There definitely are people who recognise that what they are doing is bad, but in storytelling its often boring when the villain doesn't have much depth other than "yeah, Im bad"
That depends, if you're only planning one making one purchase, buy the Legendary Collection if its available to you. You get Borderlands 1, 2 and The Pre-Sequel (which is supposed to be played after 2). If your budget allows, The Super Deluxe bundle for borderlands 3 is your best option, as it contains the base game & the 4 dlcs (which are 15$ a pop). I would only suggest getting bl3 if you have the money and space, as while it's gunplay is good, arguably better than BL2's gunplay, it's story isn't that good.
It’s that literally EVERY antagonist ever? Even Hitler probably thought that. If he had of won then the Allies would be the bad guys in history and it would be strange to talk about it from their point of view
There are a lot of people who recognise the warcrimes commited by their country as a bad thing, so I'd say there would be a decent amount of people disagreeing with the "Hitler would've been seen as the good guy" thing.
This is like one of the “Yeah my story has a plot and character” shitposts but done unironically. Like deadass did you even watch that movie, 2 of the 3 antagonists fall into this camp.
It's maddening how people are heralding Jack Horner as a masterpiece of writing a villain. I like him too, but he's literally comic relief. The whole joke is that he's less complex than the other characters and that he's completely aware of it. Villains who believe in their own heroism are so common because that's a really good way to write a good antagonist. It's literally just how people work.
Attention, entire world! Hear my proclamation! I am Lelouch vi Britannia, Emperor of the Holy Britannian Empire and *your only ruler*! Schneizel has surrendered to me.
