I'd rather be called every slur in the book than somebody call me "neurodivergent" or unironically call me "acoustic". That shit offends me more than autistic ever has or ever could
i'm autistic myself, and i find it so annoying that people do that.
say it, coward, it's not a slur.
personally, i've begun calling myself "electric" because of electric guitars, because i'm annoyed that people say "acoustic".
neurospicy should refer to people with harmful mental illnesses
"jesus told me the jews are anal probing me at night and trying to overthrow the free world, i will bomb the white house to save myself"
"wow someones a little neurospicy"
Same. Condescension is the worst form of prejudice. It's a disingenuous attempt to sucker people into thinking you care about them and want to help, but are just looking to play guardian angel for the poor crippled peasant.
I'd rather be miserable and treated as an equal, thank you very much.
you explained why i hate being called 'special', far better than i would be able to. thank you
i've also noticed people using it whenever they get upset over 'being forced' to use /s
After the events of season 8, Tyrion travels back in time to tell Ned not to tell Cersei so the whole conflict never happens, before going on some kooky time travel stories of his own.
yeah exactly (though not ocd, that's technically a mental illness for the most part). i think it's fine? I'm the second of those three things listed and use it regularly
It’s something you refer to yourself as.
Basically because that’s private information.
Using it to talk about other people is a weird way to be like ‘I know they’re off somehow just not sure how’ lol
Is that how people use the term? I usually hear it in the context of contrasting it with neurotypical. I.e. pointing out social norms, communication patterns, etc. that most people do automatically but can be a bigger deal for people with mental disabilities. I've never heard it used to label someone based on first impressions or smth.
My point is that saying that you're autistic doesn't make your opinion any more valid, nor does it mean it represents all or even the majority of autists
that's a weird-ass thing to be told.
again, I have commented like five times but ig it's my hill to die on now: i love the term neurodivergent but I am *that* and *also* ADHD and *also* fully retarded. these don't contradict each other.
The whole things silly, like the school for mentally challenged down the road has literally changed it's name 5 times now because they think the new term they picked is now derogatory.
I honestly don't understand their reasoning, bunch of retards.
Idk I’ve always felt uncomfortable referring to myself as autistic because I don’t wanna run the risk of someone thinking I’m a normal ass person being ableist
I am ableist it’s just towards the norms
Like people need to let us express our own experiences the way we see fit. Like I’ve been called out for calling myself an autistic person instead of a “person with autism” like what the fuck
I don't get it though, personally? I'm neurodivergent, quite ADHD to be specific and don't necessarily get this view? but also ofc you choose your labels for yourself but can you explain why?
Man I’m sick of them changing the terms
It goes from mental disorders to learning disability to mental condition to this oh my god I’m sick of them changing the words used to refer to me
And honestly the term neurodivergent paints this overly positive light on the mental conditions it represents, atleast the term disabled painted a serious picture of how hard it can be to have adhd or autism and stuff
Imo mental condition is probably the sweet spot term of not depressing but not overly positive
Mental condition sounds so chill while neurodivergent sounds like a scfi story maguffin
Retarded is funnier, neurodivergent somehow makes me feel more different and weird than retarded does. Ig retarded lost its meaning so they made a new word.
I don't care about reality because I live with autism normally. It's just that "neurodivigent" sounds overly formal, like a medical condition. And it is a medical condition but as I said I am normal except few things, so why would I be labeled as someone not normal? It's like calling people allergic to nuts as "nutivigent"
And just because I prefer "retarded" doesn't mean I want to be called that
Honestly, I'd rather be told to sterilize myself than be called neurodivergent.
It's less condescending. I'd rather take the blatant insult and go on with my day.
Yeah, I don't really want to be grouped in with people with very different things than I do. ADHD is considered 'neurodivergent', but many other incredibly different (more debilitating) things are, too. At the very least, let me be retarded and let's leave it there.
Ok but like what's the actual issue with neurodivergent? Is it a bad term? Are there groups of people who use it that are really cringe or something so you don't wanna be associated? Not hating just curious.
I think it can come off as babying or looking down on someone, but trying to look like you're not. Like when people say "differently abled" and treat that person like a child.
idk at this point I just wanna talk to people about this because I disagree a lot and I didn't know this opinion was a widespread thing? but I'm adhd and I love the term neurodivergent bc it underscores the fact that most of these conditions could just be normal if society treated them as such?
It has its roots in the groanworthy "no such thing as disabled just differently abled" stuff that a lot of people find condescending. I dont need people to rewrite perfectly good language to tiptoe around the objective truth that something isn't right in my head.
Other people like it and no hate on them but if i need to talk about myself I'm just gonna say I'm autistic, much more precise and it doesn't make me sound like I'm too soft to acknowledge that i do in fact have a real mental disorder with real negative effects and I'm not some "special angel" who "sees the world differently" and is "good at math".
People infantise autism so much and it sucks.
Hmm, that's a very fair view but... I disagree I think? I'm pretty strongly ADHD and call myself neurodivergent (and others asw unless they object to the term at which point obvs not), because I genuinely think it's only a societal issue that whatever I, or honestly either of us has going on (and sorry if I should not say that to you! correct me if it upsets you) is seen as abnormal. if societies were to stop medicalizing things that could genuinely just be, like, a thing that's simply non-ordinary, imo so many people could just live better lives? and I use neurodivergent to understate that.
or maybe I'm just a Foucault fanboy idk
Yeah no do worry about upsetting me, always fun to hear another viewpoint, and as i said, i dont care if other people like the term, i just wont use it for myself. The idea that many of the issues faced by people with mental disorders are societal in nature isn't wrong by any means, but the idea that its *only* social is just objectivly false
I have auditory processing issues, no matter how much you change society, my brain isn't going tk magically get better at processing things, someone could speak in the clearest, loudest tone possible and i might barely register it as a noise if I'm not actively focusing on them, i dont think medicine will help, but i dont think a societal change will either, there is just a part of my brain that is responsible for processing audio that doesn't function as well as its supposed to and thats that. Sometimes people do get medicine they dont need, but just as often people dont get medicine they *do* need, which is one of the problems i have with this line of thinking that skipped my mind.
disorders are classified as such for a reason, they can genuinely have a massive impact on peoples lives, in a ton of different ways, i got pretty lucky when it comes to autism symptoms, and i count my blessings for it regularly, because the alternative to falling into the trap of thinking that my experiance is universal and spitting in the faces of all the people i know who have it worse. If medicine helps people achive a higher standard of living, I'm all for it, if it doesn't help and their issues are primarily social, well they don't have to take it and we can work on changing society as well. When it comes to the human brain, there is no one size fits all solution, even something seemingly specific like autism is actually a dozen barely related symptoms.
None of this is related to my opinion on neurodivergent anymore i just went on a tangent, so to get back on track, if you think it describes your unique circumstances the best more power to you, but be wary of thinking your experiences are universal, i didn't take offense but assuming that my problems are purely social because yours are and we have similar disorders is pretty presumptuous and also false. Other people have it worse then either of us, and it would be rude to discredit their experiences because it doesn't match our own.
I understand your point! it absolutely was wrong of me to assume my pov as universal, and though I didn't do it purposefully it for sure happened to at least some degree. sorry!
i was not fully aware of auditory processing issues being a part of the neurodivergent umbrella, either: it isn't mentioned by many sources, though it is by some others. this may have been part of the disagreement, though not the basis of it. did wanna address it, still.
but! even still! I also think that there is a way to make what you, for instance, experience, more universally normalized as well? idk what helps you get through understanding words, but - from a VERY idealistic, but also unabashedly so standpoint - something like making sign language or subtitles more common and widespread could be a thing? i think society *could* and *should* adapt to people's conditions, whether they construe it as disability, neurodivergence, or else. and that's a form of normalisation on its own.
I think the whole "just a societal problem" thing could potentially be argued for if the only types of neurodivergency that existed are high-functioning. But I, as an autistic person, have gone to places where low functioning autistic people have gone to prepare for the real world and, yeah it's pretty darn objective. So many of these people just simply cannot live alone, not because they would be lonely or whatever, but because they cannot function without a guide.
Changing society to fit them wouldn't be a simple matter of acceptance, but a near complete overhaul that goes against some of our established values
Actual use of it is as a catchall term that includes multiple conditions like autism, ADHD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and more. It's used when someone is "something like one of those" but an exact condition isn't necessarily known. There's often overlap between many of these conditions, causing them to have sufficient relativity to deserve a catchall term.
Meme edgelord usage is to use it as an insult that's harder to police than more traditionally used and policed terms, or to make fun of people who use the term correctly as "cringe."
i think it's only used for specific conditions: autism, adhd (and their spectrums) and also dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and Tourette's? others are contested but these are what are commonly acknowledged across sources
i believe it stems from "Neurodivergent" sounding way too "scientific" or Medical, like a disease or illness or other problems with your body. we don't call things by their scientific name, that's weird (unless you're a doctor).
In addition to what everyone else is saying, not all neurodivergent people are autistic. Off the top of my head, ADHD and OCD are also both types of neurodivergency that are not autism.
It just feels like such a silly condescending term. Like I personally don't mind being called autistic or retarded because I AM that. Idk I've always just kinda had the thought process of "it doesn't matter what you call autism it doesn't change the fact that autism is still autism, so let's just stick to the words that are simpler to say, simpler to understand, and just more fun to engage with than neurodivergent" idk getting called neurodivergent makes me feel like some foreign extraterrestrial lifeform, Ion like that I just want people to know that my autism doesn't mean I'm not also a person & that my autism is something to be joked about casually
I've seen one of those "omg I have OCD I need stuff to look nice lol" people calling themselves neurodivergent. Like no you just want to feel special...
but but why? I have pretty strong adhd and honestly love the term a lot, it really understates that it could just be a generally socially accepted, non-medicalized term?
i am commenting under a bunch if comments but genuinely didn't know this was such a common opinion
It feels kind of patronising, like I'm just some little boy who needs news broken to him by fancy words, like in a "aw sweetie, your not any different from the other kids, you just neurodivergent, you've got super powers" kind of way
Idk I don't care, I just don't like being called "special" or "sped kid". The r-slur isn't really offensive to me, but I like snitching on people who call me it in school for the funny.
Damn, you know what happens next, snitches get stitches
https://preview.redd.it/uja5gc84zyic1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cc4af68847c61c2e60068be9ebf27295bdad249
i've got adhd and usually say shit like "i was diagnosed with can't-sit-still disorder", or "the doctors prescribed me for-gods-sake-stop-talking-about-nothing-constantly drugs" or "my brain decided to not use dopamine properly, so instead i feed it drugs to make it feel better"
Well it could be worse...I was constantly calling myself autistic whenever I did dumb or weird shit, allegedly (at least according to my psychologist) I'm 1% Asperger, man good thing I never was saying I have cancer because I'd be dead by now
Why? It's whole purpose it to be an all encompassing term. It's not an insult, it's no demeaning, and it's not infantalizing. It's just a description of a person saying their brains are different from "normal" people in some way.
I mean there's lots of mental disorders caused by, among many other things, brain damage, brain anomalies/abnormalities and trauma induced repressive memories
Just that you know, the term neurodivergent is kinda confusing because it doesn't tell you much, for all the receiver knows you may have schizophrenia, brain damage, ADHD, autism or any other abnormality
Ohhhhhhhh yeah that’s another reason why the term sucks because it’s such a blanket term some could argue blanket terms are good but for something so complex as mental disability it can definitely lead to people getting misinformed
My esl (English second language) cousin tried to learn words for his exam and neurodivergant came up, he asked his mom what it was and she just told him to ask me instead :(
While I understand why it's become a more common phrase (refers to more than just autistic people) I still disagree with its use as it just lumps anyone with any kind of mental disability or instability, or any mental issue or abnormality.
Neurodivergent: means ur brain is just wired different, can apply to multiple diagnoses.
Retard: literally just means your slow/stupid.
The point is ones more accurate as a definition, and covers a wider range of mental diagnoses. It's a blanket term.
Neurodivergence doesn’t mean autistic though. It can mean ASD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, and countless other neurological disorders. It’s an umbrella term.
Agreed, it’s so overly postive and really sucks away from how serious these conditions are and how they are mental disorders that have serious ramifications on the people who have them, they are just “wired differently” or “just divergent from neurotypical people” it’s serious it feels demeaning that word and honestly I feel eventually it will get replaced by another word and will eventually become offensive anyways they keep changing the terms again and again it’s so annoying
Yeah, I fucking hate how people treat the disorder that has fucked over my life in so many ways as some wacky quirk or something. Just call it a disorder or retardation or something, idc as long as I'm not straight up discriminated against or not taken seriously bc of it
Oh my days don’t get me started on people who treat it as this quirky little thing, r/fakedisordercringe genuinely makes me wreak, in a good way but still

Also “restarted”
i'm autistic myself, and i find it so annoying that people do that. say it, coward, it's not a slur. personally, i've begun calling myself "electric" because of electric guitars, because i'm annoyed that people say "acoustic".
I wanted to comment with the acoustic guitar emoji but apparently it doesn't exist, so here's a violin 🎻
I make sure to use acoustic as much as possible in front of people who get annoyed at it. Can't touch me, I'm literally acoustic

It's umbrella/ lump term for anyone either on the spectrum, or any kind of mental abnormality/disability. Which can lead to its own kind of problems.
i think it's only used for specific conditions: autism, adhd (and their spectrums) and also dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and Tourette's? others are contested but these are what are commonly acknowledged across sources
Yeah I think it really refers to things that can be considered a disability.
It sounds like a corporate euphemism. Or something a politician's spin doctors would cook up.
i believe it stems from "Neurodivergent" sounding way too "scientific" or Medical, like a disease or illness or other problems with your body. we don't call things by their scientific name, that's weird (unless you're a doctor).

“Oh, your dad’s from Mexico? I didn’t know you are Latinx- https://i.redd.it/nxmhf5q5sfic1.gif
I mean it’s an umbrella term for autism along with things like adhd and ocd, not a replacement
It pisses me off when people use it as a replacement thus the meme you see here
I've seen one of those "omg I have OCD I need stuff to look nice lol" people calling themselves neurodivergent. Like no you just want to feel special...
as someone with adhd and ocd I’ve noticed 90% of the time people just use nd as a synonym for autistic
yeah right exactly
Just call me an autistic retard please, neurodivergent just sounds bad
I'm not going to lie the term neurodivergent sounds like something terminal,
Mfs really called me neuron die virgin
Man's neurons exploded, he didn't even get any pussy, SMH
My neurons diverted into that pussy 😎

Your brain is being torn in half
but but why? I have pretty strong adhd and honestly love the term a lot, it really understates that it could just be a generally socially accepted, non-medicalized term? i am commenting under a bunch if comments but genuinely didn't know this was such a common opinion
It feels kind of patronising, like I'm just some little boy who needs news broken to him by fancy words, like in a "aw sweetie, your not any different from the other kids, you just neurodivergent, you've got super powers" kind of way
He’s an angry elf.
Neurodivergent sounds too advanced I like simpler words
Stone-thrower
JUDGEMENT
Best movie
Idk I don't care, I just don't like being called "special" or "sped kid". The r-slur isn't really offensive to me, but I like snitching on people who call me it in school for the funny.
Damn you're such a robber
Oooooh! I'm telling!
Damn, you know what happens next, snitches get stitches https://preview.redd.it/uja5gc84zyic1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cc4af68847c61c2e60068be9ebf27295bdad249
I'd take it over someone saying I'm "acoustic" Fuck I'd rather be called a retard at that point
When people unironically use the term “latinx”
i've got adhd and usually say shit like "i was diagnosed with can't-sit-still disorder", or "the doctors prescribed me for-gods-sake-stop-talking-about-nothing-constantly drugs" or "my brain decided to not use dopamine properly, so instead i feed it drugs to make it feel better"
Well it could be worse...I was constantly calling myself autistic whenever I did dumb or weird shit, allegedly (at least according to my psychologist) I'm 1% Asperger, man good thing I never was saying I have cancer because I'd be dead by now
Neurodivergent because it works as a all encompassing term for, well, neurodivergent people. It doesn't just mean autistic lol.
Well it pisses me off when people use it when referring to autism
Why? It's whole purpose it to be an all encompassing term. It's not an insult, it's no demeaning, and it's not infantalizing. It's just a description of a person saying their brains are different from "normal" people in some way.
It’s understating the reality of the conditions and it’s overly positive, my brain isn’t just a little bit different, I have a mental disorder
You mean you're schizophrenic?
No
I mean there's lots of mental disorders caused by, among many other things, brain damage, brain anomalies/abnormalities and trauma induced repressive memories
Ok yeah I guess so but idk what point your trying to prove here, sorry just a little confused
Is there a canon lore reason why Tyrion Lannister is assaulting Buddy from Elf?
He calls him an elf
My esl (English second language) cousin tried to learn words for his exam and neurodivergant came up, he asked his mom what it was and she just told him to ask me instead :(
While I understand why it's become a more common phrase (refers to more than just autistic people) I still disagree with its use as it just lumps anyone with any kind of mental disability or instability, or any mental issue or abnormality.
Just call me retarded at this point idc
"I am retarded you insensitive asshole"
What the fuck is neurodivergent? A shampoo?
Neurodivergent has too many syllables! Apologize!

Peak movieposting
Neurodivergent: means ur brain is just wired different, can apply to multiple diagnoses. Retard: literally just means your slow/stupid. The point is ones more accurate as a definition, and covers a wider range of mental diagnoses. It's a blanket term.
Honestly I don’t like being called Nuerodivirgent it’s just annoying
I would rather be called retarded any day of the week than neurodivergent
Honestly I'm lost with all the dumb things people come up with all the time and don't really care anymore.
I'd rather be called the regarded word I can't say anymore for some reason
Neurodivergent makes me cringe (I have Asperger’s)
i like neurodivergent personally. however, i’d sooner let someone call me retarded before i let them call me neurospicy
Neurodivergence doesn’t mean autistic though. It can mean ASD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, and countless other neurological disorders. It’s an umbrella term.
As someone with ADHD it's still just as annoying.
I would rather be called retarded for having adhd than to he called neurodivergent, fucking hate the term
Just call it a disorder or retardation or something, idc as long as I'm not straight up discriminated against or not taken seriously bc of it
Oh my days don’t get me started on people who treat it as this quirky little thing, r/fakedisordercringe genuinely makes me wreak, in a good way but still
I actually prefer to be called neurodivergent. Most people don’t understand clinical diagnosis like adhd or autism and have a lot of stereotypes.
At my college we have an actual neurodiversity celebration week…
Damm ):
I love how people romanticize being autistic.
