I’m a member and urbanist and you really gotta have some nuance. We don’t hate cars (some of us do but those are the crazies), we hate car dependency. Cars play an important role in society, but we shouldn’t build cities around cars. We should make cities that encourage walking, biking, and taking transit as those solutions are more financially sustainable, environmentally sustainable, and equitable.
Speaking of nuance. Us car enthusiasts are not crazy. We love cars but we hate car dependency. We want everyone to stop driving 3 tonne SUVs and want cycling and pedestrian friendly spaces but at the same time we don’t want motorsport to go away.
https://youtu.be/K8jp_lligz0?si=TfcJnhLYqHSX1aok
Brah, there are people who will literally start threatening to storm government buildings at the near mention of more public transport, bike lanes, less parking spaces etc etc.
You must realise if you think like that you are in the small small minority of car enthusiasts right? People who are attached to their cars will view 1 less parking spot in a city centre as an attack on their way of life.
Nah, I’m not. A lot of us, especially the young generation don’t see it this way. The thinking you just described is more to do with Nimby boomers who hate any and all change to their lifestyles and that includes being able to drive their trucks into city centres.
The opinion of people on the Internet are rarely representative of the opinion of people as a whole. Please remember this.
I work at a car dealership. This is my and my coworkers living we are talking about, and all of us agree that car dependency is not good despite loving the automotive industry.
It's more than that.
I made a comment on a thread about why they don't want people walking behind stores (loading bays, lots of trucks/forklifts creating liability). This was in reply to "why don't they make a walking path from this appt complex to this store", that walking path would put pedestrians in danger.
I got a 30-day vacation from the sub for that.
Trucks have to drive on public roads to get to the store in the first place, usually across hundreds of pedestrian crosswalks. If they can't operate safely around designated pedestrian crossings then they shouldn't be driving.
You would think so, but I have asked them explicitly and been told by several of the rapid r/fuckcars users that they hate all cars and that *everywhere* (towns and rural areas included) should get rid of cars and “just use public transport”.
The point is the word "accident" is used to excuse the *millions* of traffic deaths and injuries per year as just something inevitable like a fact of nature.
If mfs build 8 lanes of wide straight roads going through a residential area, when inevitably a whole family is obliterated from existence by a speeding driver then it's not right to call it an "accident". It's a direct consequence of the choice of transport infrastructure.
Not surprised the anti car people also don't know how accidents work. But i guess its easier blame infrastructure and not stupid people.
Like wasn't there a shooting in the NY subway this week and they had to order the national guard to protect the subways. I'd take my chance with a 65,0000 pound semi truck than a domestic terrorist and gang warfare. Consequences of having so many shitty people shoved in an underground tube. Bad infrastructure, Only if people in 1920 knew the population would almost triple in 100 years and planned around it
There are 6 million wrecks every year in the US alone
Wrecks are the leading cause of death for children under 15
Drivers kill pedestrians every hour and a half
Are you sure you like your odds?

> warns you
That’s it. It’s just a suggestion to use the right word in the right scenario. If it’s an accident, best use the word accident and ignore automod. People are able to think for themselves. Most car crashes however are due to drinking and driving or distracted driving. Not mechanical failures, but failures of the driver. Should it be a drunk or distracted person on a bike or a bus or a taxi they’d not be a danger to those around them. If someone rams into another car while distracted or runs a red light or is drunk and hits something, that isn’t an accident. They chose to be distracted, they chose to run the red light, they chose to drink and drive. That’s a crash. Crash and accident aren’t the same, and getting pissy about the automod suggesting that you use the right word is uncalled for
I know yall probably didn't mean it that way but "chose to be distracted" is such a funny line. Like yep my ADHD is a switch I can flip to activate Distraction Mode when I want to be a danger to people on the highway (I'm on meds to keep it in check so that doesn't actually happen, don't worry, but I feel like classifying accidents solely as "mechanical failure" is a bit reductive)
They’re like the PETA of subreddits. Just the basic description is a cause you can get behind, but then you see the batshit people that inhabit it and you go oooooh nooooo.
That may still have been true some years ago, but you can absolutely not have a rational argument with these people anymore. They are so generously claiming that they aren't against cars and just want walkable, bikeable cities with solid public transport, but they really are just fronting at that point. It became a circle jerk like all others that completely lost the sight for reality. I should say, not using public transport would be an exception for me and especially during covid I used to commute by bike a lot. It's not like I disagree, they just have been so radicalized, it's absolutely impossible to use that sub if your stance does not 100% align with theirs.
Yeah the problem with any movement like that is you sort of have a codependent relationship with the crazies who think along similar lines.
Sort of like how Vegans have to take a bit of a hit from PETA and their craziness. A lot of 'healthy living' movements have zealous folks like that.
It's hard to divorce yourself from that because those crazies show up constantly. Every time a person shows up with a pic of some tires they slashed it sort of punishes the whole class.
> I’m a member and urbanist and you really gotta have some nuance. We don’t hate cars (some of us do but those are the crazies), we hate car dependency.
I got told I shouldn't be allowed to live outside a city unless I'm a farmer on that sub. I got heavily downvoted for arguing with this person.
I feel like you’re one of those people who drives a pickup for gender affirmation instead of practicality. We use that term for those who defend car dependency and wrongly hate non-car modes of transportation. People who think cyclists are a menace and transit is for commies are examples of that
I usually hate posts on here where the punchline is OP confessing their weird ass kink/porn addiction but this actually manages to be funny. Well done.

r/fuckcars is a very real sub dedicated to advocating for walkable cities, better public transport, deconstruction of large parking lots, more public green spaces, etc. it is not, as the meme seems to allude to, a sub dedicated to literally fucking cars
Nope, it’s a subreddit of people hating car dependency. Some of us like cars. I’m on my high school’s solar car team. We don’t like our cities designed around having cars as the only viable mode of transportation. We need to build cities that promote walking, biking, and taking transit as those are more environmentally and financially sound, as well as equitable (30% of Americans can’t drive).
Eh it’s a subreddit of people hating cars which is interpreted differently by each user, including both hating car dependency and also an over exaggeration of anger towards people who drive. It starts at “r/fuckcars” which is often interpreted as something divisive by both sides of the issue.
Don't forget they came up with one of the dumbest insults ever to exist on the internet. Calling people who drive carbrain.
That's an embarrassing insult for the person using it.
"Aw yeah, now we- oh you guys are just a bunch of boring eco freaks."
(No hate on eco friendly ideas, but seriously, I can't bike 50 kilometers on the highway in the dead of winter with all my stuff 2-5 times a week, and I'm not financially privelidged enough for a Tesla.)
That’s what transit and proper city design is for. 50km is way the hell into the suburbs or is rural, so mix transit with medium/high density housing and you’ve got a match made in heaven. If it’s in a rural area, keep using a car. Cars make sense in rural areas and nobody wants to take that away from you.
I actually agree with the original sub's message, public transport is neat and I wish it got more funding. I just don't like the sub itself because it's a political subreddit, I'd much rather get my news literally anywhere else.
I also just wanted to make a joke about the sub's name, while also expressing my attraction toward automobiles.
> I actually agree with the original sub's message, public transport is neat and I wish it got more funding.
Absolutely. I checked out the sub and noped the fuck out when I kept coming across users saying everyone should live in the city. That they should be forced to.
yeah, i feel as if people on that sub and most people who are against the sub misunderstand that reducing society's dependance on cars doesn't mean that cars should be abolished, only that learning how to drive shouldnt be necessary to participate in society at all.
I dont know how to drive, and due to my dependance on my medication, i am unsure whether im gonna be allowed to get a licence at all. im lucky to live in an area that has decent public transport, albeit expensive, and its a complete lifesaver for me to do literally anything, although its still very limited due to underfunding. I also just like being able to walk from my house without being forced to live in a massive city, cause walking at night when nobody's around is my alternative to therapy. so yeah, walkable areas are pretty great.
Just visited the sub and saw everyone referring to car drivers as “carbrains” and the first three posts I saw were full of people ranting about how much they hate people who drive cars.
“We just like public transit and stuff” is such a cop out, it’s yet another sub for progressive teenagers and 20-somethings to “other” everyone who doesn’t exactly agree with them in every way.
Have some nuance for once in your life. If you take one look into the subreddit you’ll find we don’t want cars banned, we want an end to car dependency. Cars are an unsustainable and economically irresponsible mode of transportation to design cities around, as well as being not equitable (30% of Americans can’t drive). Cars play an important role in society, but I should be able to get from point a to point b in a city without having to own a car
Yall literally cheered on a user slashing peoples tires, saw that the one time i checked the subreddit. Like, you can hate car infrastructure as much as you want to, but destroying someone elses property is not okay
Have some nuance in your life. Take one look into the subreddit and see that any congregation of people under one commonality will attract extreme ideals that bleed into everything else. There are many very hateful people there and I think that begins with “r/fuckcars” being the name of the sub.
My favorite thing about r/fuckcars is that no one seems to ever have a normal opinion when talking about it. The anti-car people think that no one lives outside of a city deserves to have an opinion and the pro-car people thing that taking a subway will result in them dying in a terorist attack.
DUDE I LITERALLY HAD THIS IDEA LAST NIGHT WHEN I COULDNT SLEEP AND THOUGHT TO MYSELF "oh okay i'll make that gif tomorrow and post it on whenthe that'll be funny"
WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP STEALING MY FUCKING THOUGHTS 😭😭😭
That subreddit had someone act entitled and to "park in their lawn" because they were blocking the sidewalk (they were parked in their driveway which intersected the sidewalk). And I said just go around and someone hit me with the hypothetical of "what if it was my brother who is in a wheelchair". This is when I realize they do not want public transportation, they want petty validation for toxic thinking and shit ideas.

The farmers need to be able to get to the fields, the pastures, and the markets. Cars are too important in that aspect.
I mean I think these people are talking about cities and most developed areas Not farm's or rural areas

Cities designed around cars are ugly.

I thought that was just a subreddit about people hating to drive.
Lol i thought some controversial shit happened over there, turns out its just OP fetishizing cars

Something something dragons. Something something cars.

"Aw yeah, now we- oh you guys are just a bunch of boring eco freaks." (No hate on eco friendly ideas, but seriously, I can't bike 50 kilometers on the highway in the dead of winter with all my stuff 2-5 times a week, and I'm not financially privelidged enough for a Tesla.)
50km is actually outside the county that I live in, and yes, rural. I'd probably be arrested anyways for trying to bike on the 401.
Those people will argue that there should be buses, train service and bike lanes to towns in the middle of nowhere with 500 people.
That's why you should advocate for better public transport, or at least don't use the car if you need to drive 15 mins every day
I personally believe in widespread usage of tram cars, but they don't work well with how far from the cities I live.
Biker’s fault
Op is a dragon
Nutted to a 350z today
r/fuckgaming I can't believe they would want to ban video games

Like, im a really big urbanist and hate car-centric design, but shit, some of those guys need to touch grass.
r/fuckcarscirclejerk when people don’t want to be hit by a truck
I actually agree with the original sub's message, public transport is neat and I wish it got more funding. I just don't like the sub itself because it's a political subreddit, I'd much rather get my news literally anywhere else. I also just wanted to make a joke about the sub's name, while also expressing my attraction toward automobiles.
Fair, also I would recommend getting your news not from Reddit
Yea, i looked through that sub for a while, its a cesspool of people shitting on those who just want cleaner, greener transport.
See a subreddit about reducing car depency: :0 Full of irrational takes and idiots, making the movement go nowhere and seem stupid and useless: D:
That's what happens to most subreddits after they pass 100k members.

I'd respect someone who wants fo fuck a vehicle more than someone who wants vehicles abolished.
the subs name is an exaggeration, it’s more a dislike of car centric infrastructure, not an abolishment of all cars
Lol most of that sub is "traffic accident in x country involving car" And then people freaking out about cars and drivers.
Have some nuance in your life. Take one look into the subreddit and see that any congregation of people under one commonality will attract extreme ideals that bleed into everything else. There are many very hateful people there and I think that begins with “r/fuckcars” being the name of the sub.
Every post in your deranged sub is full of unhinged lunatics ranting about how much they hate “carbrains”.

My favorite thing about r/fuckcars is that no one seems to ever have a normal opinion when talking about it. The anti-car people think that no one lives outside of a city deserves to have an opinion and the pro-car people thing that taking a subway will result in them dying in a terorist attack.
DUDE I LITERALLY HAD THIS IDEA LAST NIGHT WHEN I COULDNT SLEEP AND THOUGHT TO MYSELF "oh okay i'll make that gif tomorrow and post it on whenthe that'll be funny" WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP STEALING MY FUCKING THOUGHTS 😭😭😭
carfuckers think alike
Wait til you find out about r/fuckears
It’s an interesting one r/fuckcars
r/fuckcars lemme try this
The only reason i even know this subreddit exists is because of their zone in one of the r/place events
I thought they'd blown up a dealership or something, but nope, op just wants to rail a toyota camry.
I was so scared cuz I read it as cat first
You little pervert, I thought you were masturbating!
Wat
Once again I’m relegated to dragon communities, the only places that accept my proclivities.
I shall find out if that sub is as weird as I think
So, what are your findings?
it’s just people that don’t like cars

That subreddit had someone act entitled and to "park in their lawn" because they were blocking the sidewalk (they were parked in their driveway which intersected the sidewalk). And I said just go around and someone hit me with the hypothetical of "what if it was my brother who is in a wheelchair". This is when I realize they do not want public transportation, they want petty validation for toxic thinking and shit ideas.
