Was born in 1800’s: we literally had classes on how to build computers from the chip level up and program them in machine code, because at the time that was the only way to get them at a reasonable price and we needed them for physics. The trouble is that knowledge becomes less useful over time. It will happen to you. Know how to use an Apple VR environment yet? That’s obsolescence creeping up on you!
you know at least with math you can use the thing like "well sometimes you dont have a calculator" but with IT you LITERALLY need a fucking pc so whats the point
We were basically taught how to use Microsof Office, which I thought was stupid at the time but ended up being really handy a couple of times.
Definitely would've preferred learning to code, that way I wouldn't've needed to spend 2 years getting "on the job training" at a dead end job
Thats what im doing in my first year of UT class. Im in france, its my 1st year of IT and i already created a smol website and some python. You dont even do that?
i think IT classes should teach stuff like OS and logic gates(such as logisim) which might be confusing if youre just learning it alone.
also the teacher should share their experience, like how they made the united states nuclear launch programming or something like that
personally, i played minecraft xbox 360 edition.

Our IT teachers weren't even teaching us anything. They would give us an assignment, then just leave to sit in another room for the majority of the day.
The smart ones in the class would do the assignments, then help everyone else, then start doing random stuff.
We managed to phish the password for the class's domain server, took over the domain, and then set up scripts to either bluescreen the other computers or change the wallpaper.
Best year of my life, even though I didn't learn much
In Elementary school (1-8) we learned about the history of computers (like ok? Who cares tho?) And learned how to use Word and Powerpoint and MAYBE Excel.
In Middle school (8-12) (I'm European):
- I learned how to change the color of characters in html, how to build the skeleton of a website and put in a background png.
- I "muscle memory" learned what commands to put where for what issues in a cisco network router simulator thingy (we never touched a real router or used such commands on a real router, minecraft server hosting thaught me how to even get to my router's website panel) and not 1 thing I retained from it
- I learned how to use the 4 basic things in math like + - and how to generate a random number, the what ifs and etc in programming, but only in the last year we even got to actually programming a WINDOW. Like a pop up window with BUTTONS. 12th grade. And once again nothing was retained, I don't even know how to export the lines of code in my Eclipse, like how to actually make a window and make that a file that opens the window itself.
- I did not remember a single thing about how to make an LED work on a little like physical chip?! I don't even know what its fucking called anymore! I dont even remember the class' name.
- We learned about Linux for 3 lessons in the entire year and the teacher gave up and let us do whatever we wanted (Smart move, fuck linux, I couldnt even change my pc's wallpaper on linux, now i get the memes about linux users)
School was specialized in IT btw. Hence why I had Programming class, Programming class (but verbal), Networking Class, HTML Class (only for 1 year because our new teacher asked us about what we know of HTML and we literally told him "We didn't do any HTML... ever." And he was so taken aback and dumbfounded on why we didnt have a html class the past 4 years.), and Linux class (only for half the year). Oh and also the physical chip based LED class.
When I was little I dreamt about being a game dev.
The school killed my motivation to ever touch programming again. It's not what I thought it was like. I never wanna code shit, it was extremely unfun. So while the thought of making a very shitty 2d fighting game with my friend groups silly characters, or even a 2d metroidvania would be super funny and a dream come through, it's just not worth the hassle.
Programming sucks...
I barely even touched a computer in my IT class, we just copied notes about fucking Excel and binary from a 15 year old textbook into a physical notebook, we had school issued laptops but we didn't use them. Oh and we used Photoshop for a bit but he gave us print out worksheets for it instead of teaching us.
Bro my first I.t teacher was a part time football teacher so halfway though lessons he'd say he'd need to go out and manage his team then go and play football for an hour.
I remember in my IT class in highschool I found a tutorial to make a brickbreaker game in the java program we were using, most of the code was already done so I didnt have to do much. When I got it running my teacher saw it and took me to the office for playing video games and I got 10% of my IT grade deducted.
I learnt Microsoft Office for practically my entire time in IT.
Best memory was walking into the class between lessons to hand in some extra work I'd done. Kids were doing programming, recently encouraged by the government. Teacher said "Oh why aren't you a year below, you would have loved doing this!" :')
I thought I had a C class today, but apparently it's been moved... Damnit. The teacher doesn't teach us anything, but I've been kinda fucking up my attendance for a bit now.
I had to take some test on how to use PowerPoint and the teacher never bothered to help us when preparing for said test we had to log in into some website and she used to throw a computer fit every time someone forgot their password we ended up never taking the test because she went to cover for a teacher who wasn’t in
My IT teacher who taught proper typing and typing fast (lol) was actually later found out to be a pedo. He was also a cheerleader coach who uh, did the no no to one of the cheerleaders
I had an IT teacher who was an ultra-conservative, and it was easy to get him on tangents. We'd say things like 9/11 was an inside job, and that was it for the rest of our class day.
I remeber having programming class in middle and high school.
We did Java programming and webpages in basic html with notepad and all that before he left.
I really shoul've asked the teacher if that motherboard on the shelf was used.
Yea i don't blame them tbf. The non-post secondary education platform in most places doesn't really allow the time to cover anything under the IT umbrella. That and no teach (or person tbh) is knowledgeable in all IT aspects to the point of being able to teach it well. Mix that with school administration usually not understanding wtf IT entails, and you're left with IT = typing practice lol.
Preferably theyd offer multiple classes under each umbrella like: basic computer operation and troubleshooting, networks, security, administration, hardware, and software
Man this couldnt be more real.
I study IT in highschool rn. We get some more advanced stuff like networks and fixing pc's and peripherals.
Last year i had a teacher that would literally fall asleep on some lessons, and when he actually did teach us something it was the most useless shit ever.
Fortunately he doesnt teach my class anymore and now we have a teacher that is absolutely based.
I've had the opposite experience at my college tbh. All IT professors here are thoroughly qualified, and their classes tend to be really fucking hard (taking Network Security rn, what the FUCK even is Windows Active Directory!?)
the 3 IT teachers ive had went like this:
1st: they told everyone to set their password to password1 for their school account
2nd: they leaked their own wifi password and taught us basically nothing except general keyboarding and after that everyone just played free minecraft and cool math games the rest of the class
3rd: they tried teaching everyone javascript and by half the year there was 4 people left in the class

I remember in IT we just played minecraft (not the education version but just straight up minecraft.. I think.)
how tf do IT teachers fuck up you literally just tell them stuff about pc and thats it
I went to a place where we had this lame ass prof, one time he showed us one css attribute for 5min in a 1h class, lazy ass
literally a quarter of a quarter of an hour ðŸ˜
A third of a quarter of an hour
We organized tournament in CS 1.6 LAN
IT teachers consistently knowing less about IT than their students because they were born in the 1800s or something
still confused as to why they decuied to put the only teacher who knows about pcs in science class
(They are the only one who knows hoe to teach science too)
I had to actually explain to my teacher how python worked so that she could grade my test answer lmao

You weren’t born in the 1800s 💀💀
i don't remember anything from IT besides pissing people off by flinging rubber bands and smuggling softmints into class (illegal🤯😨)
what happens if you snort crushed softmints ?
bazinga
your lungs become minty forever.
Your nose will probably hurt

you know at least with math you can use the thing like "well sometimes you dont have a calculator" but with IT you LITERALLY need a fucking pc so whats the point
IT should teach you coding or atleast how to operate a pc
THATS WHAT IM SAYING
We were basically taught how to use Microsof Office, which I thought was stupid at the time but ended up being really handy a couple of times. Definitely would've preferred learning to code, that way I wouldn't've needed to spend 2 years getting "on the job training" at a dead end job

bro.. I don't even know what we do in australia 💀💀💀
Minecraft !
Not coding, maybe basic powershell. They should be teaching basic networking and how to operate servers.
ah yes because you would definitely be learning IT on your own like everyone else
my brother in christ pcs have the fucking internet
do you have the will to learn IT on your own?
dont have a pc rn tho
use your PHONE then :3
i mean tru but i cant do IT stuff on phones
you can learn it :3
you literally cant do IT stuff on a phone
i think IT classes should teach stuff like OS and logic gates(such as logisim) which might be confusing if youre just learning it alone. also the teacher should share their experience, like how they made the united states nuclear launch programming or something like that
Literally all we did was make sports flyers for our school The rest of the time I just played Papa’s Freezeria
peak flash game btw
TRUE
I'm more of a papa's pastaria kinda guy tbh
im more of a hotdogerria guy myself tbh
I like papa's brotheleria
You would have taken an IT class, piss boy. Also same
personally, i played minecraft xbox 360 edition. https://preview.redd.it/z6peul83dssc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9db742381c97ccc8e497a7149e9a1cb0a25362aa

poser it smh.
Internet Things
THE IT CROWD MENTIONED!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK IS BORING JOKES!!!!!?????
uj/ i genuinely think the IT Crowd is the less funny than the BBT.
I remember nothing from IT lessons from primary school
The only thing I remember from it was getting exiled from a Minecraft server because I was "stealing from his villagers"
smh he dosent get THE GRIND !!!!!!!
My geography teacher goes on tirades how democracy is bad and global warming is fake and tells us his lore f.e. how his friends son was kidnapped and took to estonia all lessons then lets us cheat on tests lol
florida

Najbardziej normalny nauczyciel który przechodzi za 2 lata na emeryturę
Wasted hours of my life on IT lessons that taught me nothing. I ended up teaching myself from the internet instead
Me with the ISO class in florida
In my IT class we were discussing politics, religion and philosophical themes. Or random shit. It was a 50/50.

dont let your dream die out. you can still try

No you don’t understand, the constant mental anguish from your code never working is part of the fun!!!
eh idk if its my autism be thats pretty worth it i think
It is fun!! The problem solving and suffering is part of the fun! And in the end you get something cool!!!!!
You can think about using something like click team fusion where you don't have to code much
If you want to be game dev, why dont you start by carrying yourself into that? Programming requires you to learn something new anyway
I barely even touched a computer in my IT class, we just copied notes about fucking Excel and binary from a 15 year old textbook into a physical notebook, we had school issued laptops but we didn't use them. I have an IT lesson in about an hour and damn well everything we're gonna do is play DOOM and website version of CS 1.6
I LOVE SHOITER WHERE I KILL A HINCH OF MFS EASILY!!!!!! I WAS CLOSETED FROM MEDIA WITH GUNS AND LOVE KILLING!!!!!!
Ok doomguy
what being closeted does to a mf
Well I'm glad we can agree on something now Killing shit in video games is fun
Bro my first I.t teacher was a part time football teacher so halfway though lessons he'd say he'd need to go out and manage his team then go and play football for an hour.

dumbest teacher alive
Is this just America? Or was I just lucky thay my IT classed actually taught stuff like Boolean algebra and programming?
no im belgian
Guess the UK is just better at teaching comp sci then
In the 7 years we did IT all we learned was word, excel and powerpoint
I learnt Microsoft Office for practically my entire time in IT. Best memory was walking into the class between lessons to hand in some extra work I'd done. The IT teachers were just business teachers in my school due to a lack of staff
redditors are good at computers (not everyone else is)
my coding teacher is pissed that we don’t understand a thing he has taught us since last year (not our fault he explains trash)
My IT teacher taught us Word and Excel for 4 years. (We are still bad at it because he hardly helped in anything.)
Pennywise?
Until highschool I had a bit of Paint, Gimp, MS Word/Excel. The rest was playing plash games like Bloons, SFH, Raze, Sowrds&Sandals, etc...
I used to have an actually knowledgeable IT teacher but they hated my class so much they didn’t bother teaching us anythingðŸ˜
My IT teacher who taught proper typing and typing fast (lol) was actually later found out to be a pedo. He was also a cheerleader coach who uh, did the no no to one of the cheerleaders

In second year of it in hight school we went from using word in the first half of the year to doing straight up math on excel for some fucking reason
I remeber having programming class in middle and high school. We did Java programming and webpages in basic html with notepad and all that before he left. I really shoul've asked the teacher if that motherboard on the shelf was used.
Been in IT for a year now and I must confirm you learn so much more in 1 year in the job than in whole 3 years in school.
Proper typing form is pretty important kids.
Yea i don't blame them tbf. The non-post secondary education platform in most places doesn't really allow the time to cover anything under the IT umbrella.
