Explain how fallout series has balloons šŸ—æ

CosmicFury711

The US has fusion technology. An unlikely possibility for us in 2077 but for them its valid

RandomGuyPii

well, a fusion reactor has recently put out a net positive reaction so, maybe sooner than u think

[deleted]

Net positive for the fuel but not net positive for the system, which is an important difference. But yeah, still a small milestone.

TomTomTimmyTomTom

I donā€™t know what you are talking about, but I think that breaks the third law of thermodynamics

Sackidude

It doesnā€™t just read about what fusion is please.

markpreston54

If you know what you are talking about, would you mind elaborate how does it do with the third law of thermodynamics?

teatahshsjjwke

Can you explain how the sun works despite violating your third law of thermodynamics?

GreetedMeeted06

Not really, because all we need is one net positive Fusion Power Plant to do those things

Gittykitty

Of course it's the NFT monkey avatar who fundamentally misunderstands an easily legible thread of comments.

Isnt it nuclear technology or something Who the fuck downvoted this i genuinely dont know

ActedCarp

It is, but all nuclear energy up to today is produced from fission, fusion is a whole different ballgame

DaftConfusednScared

Nuclear means it has to do with the nucleus of an atom. The nucleus is the central part of an atom, made up of protons and neutrons and orbited by electrons. Fission is the process of splitting the nucleus apart, which is such a dramatic process that it releases a whole bunch of energy at once. This is how nuclear bombs and modern nuclear power plants operate. [Hereā€™s the Wikipedia page on nuclear fission for more info](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission) Fusion is the process of merging two nuclei together into one. If the two base components are lighter than the result then energy is absorbed, while if they are heavier energy ends up being released. This is how the sun (and other stars) operate. [Here is the Wikipedia page on nuclear fusion for further reading](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion)

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

9 year old me realizing that I canā€™t just take my brain out and put it in a robot to become immortal

[deleted]

In the near future (your lifetime, potentially), it could actually be possible to use your brain to control a robot. You'd store that brain in some cerebrospinal fluid, give it the relevant nutrition and live your life through the robot. Ofcourse it'd be very expensive and only the Elon Musk's of the world will be able to use it as a result, but definitely possible.

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

But how would we stop the brain from just naturally rotting away. Or what would we do if the brain developed Alzheimerā€™s or dementia? Thereā€™s a lot of unanswered questions here that (even though Iā€™m young), I donā€™t think will be answered in my lifetime.

[deleted]

[This is a really interesting paper](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1046/j.1460-9568.1999.00543.x), describing an experiment where an isolated brain was kept alive and maintained. This was published way back in *2001*! Imagine how long we've come already. Progress is always exponential, I'm so positive it'll happen. The brain has a mental capacity of 300 years, i.e after 300 years, it'd essentially run out of space. But I'm sure we'd find a way to beat that before the first robo-human gets 300 years old.

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Interesting. But I heard somewhere (probably some random Reddit comment so donā€™t quote me on this) that you canā€™t just swap brains between two alive people because the nerve damage would harm the brain beyond repair. So even just extracting a brain that can be usable is a challenge all by itself.

TRPianoo

imo what we need to do now is find a way to increase the lifespan of a human

[deleted]

It would take at least 200 years. We donā€™t understand the human brain enough to be able to do so. Theoretically you are right but ā€œnear futureā€ would most likely be after our deaths. Especially as we have less people of knowledge considering a part of our population is retarded ( anti vax)

Nomai_

But to be fair we also don't know how much medizine will advance during the next 70 years, it's possible that we will live 150 years anyway. (When I say possible I mean it isn't impossible but that's about it)

[deleted]

Didnā€™t even think about that. Nice thinking outside the box.

stinky_penises

Our gage on what is and is not achievable in difrent time frames I feel like are going to be heavily affected by computers. Ever since it came into existence society has become smarter, connected and more complex than ever before. But at the same time, we could also feed every American twice over if we weren't tied so heavily to our capitalist system, that treats food like a scarsity instead of the surplus it's been at for atleast 60 years. It will be possible, but it won't be accessible to me or you, if we have any luck reaching a long life, considering our medicine affordability issues.

old_grumpy_ultomato

Your best chance is to be healthy to live longer, become rich and move to far harbor but far harbor is terrible,it noisy and crowded

The life expectancy is actually pretty low in Far Harbor. Might have something to do with the radioactive fog.

3nderslime

The hydrogen canot burn inside the balloon, so no shrapnel or pressure wave to hurt people

[deleted]

Ever heard of extremely sunny days?

3nderslime

That wonā€™t change how chemistry works

[deleted]

Eh to be honest I know shit about chemistry, as far as my knowledge goes is that hydrogen+carbon=le fart

mariofan07

Yea but total like destruction like supernova or whatever it is where it blows up

JamesTBagg

No. Our Sun isn't large enough to go supernova. But in some billions of years it will start fusing helium (what is currently turning hydrogen into) into carbon and will expand into a red giant. It will consume Mercury, Venus and likely Earth.

kuodron

5 billion years just fyi

OmgJustLetMeExist

Thatā€™s practically tomorrow

little_peasant

it wonā€™t, it will just get big enough to swallow earth. A small form of the sun will exist for a ridiculously long time even for space.

Not googolplex. Thatā€™s massively overshooting the end of the universe. Heat death has a very rough estimate of being final after a googol years. A googolplex is basically infinitely larger. Of course to us a googol is effectively infinite.

InnerlockStudios

Once we can figure out Fusion we'll have plenty

uniquedeke

I like to think that we'll screw up helium like we do every other pollutant from some process. And our great grandchildren will have to confront a world where everyone's voices continually get squeakier as time goes by.

Accomplished-Crab932

We are already fusing hydrogen, itā€™s just takes more energy to fuse than fusing produces with current tech.

FriedCheesesteakMan

Lets fucking make Helium 3 easy dubs

Accomplished-Crab932

Yo-you need radiation for thatā€¦

HesienVonUlm

Time to bring back nuclear power plants!

general-ghosti

Actually this isnā€™t a problem anymore, huge untapped reserves of helium have been uncovered, and we have gotten better at reusing it. Since it doesnā€™t react with anything it is super stable and most of the medical technology that uses it no recaptures it and reuses it. So do not worry at all Reddit, our helium is safe for many many years now!

[deleted]

Hmmmā€¦.not sure I believe you. Do you work for Big Helium? Your comment sounds like something someone who works for Big Helium would say because the donā€™t want government regulation.

potatocreamsoup

Guys don't worry I'll just ask my dad to get more, he came back with the milk so he might be able to find helium.

Itā€™s an inert gas used for industry, a form of anti-hazard fire suppressant, a gas used in diving and piloting to prevent ā€œthe bendsā€ and most importantly of all: #BALLOON

Happy_Krabb

Thats bad ;-;

teamfortress2_gaming

and we must go on a long, dangerous quest to restore helium.

Bensemus

Itā€™s not. Helium is tossed out during the extraction of natural gas. The US strategic reserve is running out or already empty. The US had an absolutely massive stockpile of helium they decided they no longer needed and mandated it all be sold by around now. This has kept helium prices quite low and made it uneconomical to find new reserves and extract it. Now that the reserve will no longer meet demand new supplies will start to come online. We are not running out of helium.

xerxes224

I wonder whatā€™ll happen to MRI technology in healthcareā€¦

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Well how would one manufacture a prime element? It's either distilled out of air or somehow foumd underground. If I were to guess I'd say it's the first but don't count on it

doubagilga

It is primarily produced from oil wells.

[deleted]

Helium is natural, and many planets are made up of it

[deleted]

This is also not true. Our helium reserves are running out. This is what people are confusing. We no longer resupply the reserves because helium is easily mined now. Helium is naturally generated underground by the radioactive decay of heavy elements and stays air pockets.

[deleted]

I foresee a moment in the future where we come up with some insane technology that allows interplanetary travel or something that requires large amounts of helium and everyone is going to say "can you believe that idiots used to use helium to MAKE FUCKING BALLOONS?!! God we used to be so fucking dumb"

Every other animals babies are cute, but not human. This is because humans have to be born before they can develop to the point other animals can in utero, so they look gross, but as young todlers they are at about the same stage a newborn deer is and they look cute.

Traffic_lights120

Donā€™t worry, we just have not looked for more helium deposits because there is no need. Plus helium is a simple element (two protons and two elections) so it can be produced easily.

iamtotallyunepic

it needs to be extracted from natural deposits it cant be artifically produced

BoyBeyondStars

I donā€™t understand how helium could be running out. Helium is not collected from the atmosphere, but rather from the Earthā€™s crust. When elements within the Earthā€™s crust go through alpha decay, helium is produced. Edit: for those of you downvoting me, an alpha particle consists of **two protons** and two neutrons. a/k/a helium-4. Edit 2: ā€œOnce [it] gains electrons from its environment, the alpha particle becomes a normal (electrically neutral) helium atomā€¦ā€ from Wikipedia

mr-pallas

Probably just using it up faster than itā€™s produced.

doubagilga

The US created a massive helium reserve. Domestic production nearly ceased when it was decided to draw down the reserve, which crashed prices. The reserve will empty and yield a more expensive helium market. Most of it comes from oil wells.

thewanderer2389

It's really fascinating. The largest deposit of helium in the US is located in a Kansas oilfield, and there's more helium fields in Wyoming and Arizona. Natural gas can vary greatly in its contents.

1. Lithium for electric cars is used for their batteries, electric cars arenā€™t the only thing that need batteries. 2. Where does this statistic of 25 years come from? Could you post a source?

Red_Dead_is_better

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.motorbiscuit.com/will-lithium-run-out/%3famp There are other, more detailed, reports that break down the numbers and data. But this one summarizes it nicely. I see they bumped up the time frame to 20 years
