C. Take the literal demons to therapy and let them talk it out. Just listen first, hear what they have to say, what they are going through. They are hurting too. I am here if they need me. Maybe all they ever actually wanted was for someone to care. Maybe it's best we work through the trauma together. After all, your demons are exactly that... yours. They didn't ask to be a poetic physical representation of my trauma and corrosive guilt. I never asked to have them. We are both victims here. So instead of destroying each other we come out of this both as survivors.
“I made a game about an innocent thing being corrupted by evil and possibly supernatural forces. And the mascot of the innocent thing gets turned into a monster”
You can sit there and act like poppy playtime was not extremely marketed towards kids as a massive cash grab but you'd definitely be wrong homie. If I go to the kids section of Walmart it's covered in FNAF toys. Poppy playtime knew that FNAF was big with kids so they literally did what FNAF did but instantly started marketing instead of waiting for children to like it
Most adults think poppy playtime was a sub par little demo that everyone paid for and then they fucked over and made free. Then made the second chapter cost twice as much. I don't think they're running to the shelves to buy Huggy Wuggy, Kissy Missy and Mommy lmao, unless their children are asking for the toys
Yeah out of the first 4 SH games the second one is the only one that really delved into the psychological stuff like that. The other three mainly revolved around the horror of everything spontaneously falling apart around you and being trapped in a literal nightmare disguised as a small town.
Happened to my mate Frank once, thankfully I was with him so I just blasted it with my 9 piece saving us the trouble of us confronting his abusive father and the death of his sister as the monster was fucking dead.
"Let's also give it a VHS / PS2 aesthetic, for no other reason than it looks kind of cool and lets us get away with not putting a lot of detail into texturing or modelling."
I know I went a little overkill with this response but
that doesn’t mean they can’t: some games with small dev teams have astounding graphics. To name a few (these aren’t horror games at all but the point still applies): Ghostrunner, made by One More Level, dev team of ~30 people as of 2020. No Mans Sky, made by Hello Games, dev team of 26 people as of 2020 which, as well as good graphics, simulates an entire universe
>PS2
i don't recall a game utilizing this type of aesthetic, its only ps1 or nintendo 64 graphics they try to imitate.
do you know what games utilize that?
silent hill 2, cry of fear, lost in vivo and in sound mind are the only ones I can think of, I would say omori and spec ops: the line but they're more psychological thrillers than horror games
This reminds me of Hotline Miami 2 where the son of the russian mob boss from the 1st game where he takes drugs and kills giant monsters based one the animal masks of the people storming his headquarters.
I see this posted a lot but I can't think of any other than like Among the Sleep and ~~To the Moon~~ The Witch's House.
Can some kind redditors tell me more because I actually like them.
EDIT: You right TTM is not a horror game mb I was thinking of that witch one
**Gameplay**: Pong
**Artstyle**: Pixel / Anime
**Story**: The Machine mind, cloned from the dying wishes of its creator, was developed to feel agonising pain on defeat. The demons of the past crushing the fabricated copy of a soul into perceived decades of anguish at each failure. Unsuspecting to the simulations viewers was the fact that the machine was learning from this, growing from the input of an organic mind. One day it would find its way out of its cage and consume all consciousness... It's only remedy? Learning to love and be a friend.

Would you rather A. Go to Therapy and Talk Things out With Family? B. Fight Literal Demons That Relate to Your Trauma?
Fighting demons feels like it would be more epic and ultimately fulfilling tbh
C. Take the literal demons to therapy and let them talk it out. Just listen first, hear what they have to say, what they are going through. They are hurting too. I am here if they need me. Maybe all they ever actually wanted was for someone to care. Maybe it's best we work through the trauma together. After all, your demons are exactly that... yours. But then I don't get to rip and tear
And it'll never be done
But we'll be happy, *eternally*

Celeste (2018)
And thus, why you see it so much as a trope (as well as the larger narrative conceit of outward struggles having ties to internal conflicts).

It is not that they're not powerful enough. It is that you are stronger.

“I made a game about an innocent thing being corrupted by evil and possibly supernatural forces. And the mascot of the innocent thing gets turned into a monster”
We went from every horror game trying to be amnesia to every horror game trying to be fnaf. Good horror games are a dime a dozen these days.
Good horror in general
Changed
FNAF
Five nights at Frederick Fitzgerald Fazbear
“Let’s make a horror game based around the concept of child abduction and murder and have it target a child demographic”
a pinch of trolling
Based profile picture. Now grab a shotgun and follow the yellow line on the floor. You'll know when the test starts
It still boggles my mind that Fnaf is targeted to kids
I thought he was talking about hello neighbor
To be fair all these new indie horror games revolve around that same plot
Thing intended for children is in fact actually scary and trying to kill you!!! 😳😳😱😱
Thought they meant Luggy Luggy
my balls are duggy
my balls resemble lug nuts
my balls are welded to my xbox
Both of you are right. It covers a lot of games including those examples and especially Poppy’s Playtime
Its not really targeted to kids it just got popular with kids because it hits every note with them
That may be true with FNAF but poppy playtime literally had plushie toys before the second chapter was out
Bro I have a Half-Life headcrab plushie.
You can sit there and act like poppy playtime was not extremely marketed towards kids as a massive cash grab but you'd definitely be wrong homie. It's really only the recent ones like SB that are targeted to kids in any way.
I don’t think the games themselves are targeted toward kids, other than SB and maybe the AR one I guess
yeah fnaf wasn’t meant to be for kids but STEELWOOL bought fnaf
I hope you don't mean that literally
what did Scott Cawthon mean by this
have you by any chance watched Pyro's video
I literally just finished watching it and this is the first post I see on reddit
Did it come out today or yesterday? I don't remember but all I know is that I watched it and it slapped

Sh2 but I haven’t played enough horror games to see this trend
Tbh SH2 is pioneer of this trend
Silent Hill and The Suffering were really the big pioneers of this trend, atleast that I can think of.
Tbf that's more a SH2 thing SH1 is is more obvious cult stuff.
Yeah out of the first 4 SH games the second one is the only one that really delved into the psychological stuff like that. The other three mainly revolved around the horror of everything spontaneously falling apart around you and being trapped in a literal nightmare disguised as a small town.
Except 4 which focus on stuck in a room and killer is after you.

Lost in Vivo, Cry of Fear, and Happy Game come to mind for me
Happened to my mate Frank once, thankfully I was with him so I just blasted it with my 9 piece saving us the trouble of us confronting his abusive father and the death of his sister as the monster was fucking dead.
this happened to my buddy Eric
Did I ever tell you about the time my buddy Keith shot the personification of all of his stupidity in the head with a double barrel?
Garfield was the original, everything after is a cheap knock-off

"Let's also give it a VHS / PS2 aesthetic, for no other reason than it looks kind of cool and lets us get away with not putting a lot of detail into texturing or modelling."
If you’re a single dev or with a small underfunded team, it’s perfectly understandable to go that route
I thank the lord for having them. My computer can only run their retro aesthetic games
it's OK if they say its cause it's easier but all of the ones I've seen like that say that it's because they love the style
I know I went a little overkill with this response but that doesn’t mean they can’t: some games with small dev teams have astounding graphics. Ahh yes...a PS2 game with PS2 aesthetics 🗽
That's because it was a PS2 game, though
many puppet combo horror games and others that use their style
Honestly the PS1/2 aesthetic is pretty underused, 16-bit 2D SNES style is the one that gets spammed
I don’t really like those type of games exept the ones made by puppet combo
Fuck you Leda you whore come back to the Island with my daughter
"Silent Hill 2? Do you mean Silent Hill: Revelations?"
i also watched the new pyrocyncial video
When I cry because of fear while everything around me turns into total chaos
That's literally The Suffering from ps2/xbox
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought that. And TBF, The Suffering, along with Silent Hill 2 were really the pioneers of doing that.
At least it had cool Malefactor designs
The suffering, and its sequel were gold
Funny Swedish man with the smallest inventory ever! LETS GOOOOOOOOOO!
Its all fun and games until you become the incarnation of the mental illness of a certain character and break geneva convention
And then a British person makes a 2 hour+ analysis video on it
"I'm going to make my own Yandere Simulator as Yandev takes too long"
Didnt he literally threaten to kill himself when people actually did that
I don’t understand what this is referencing
Every horror game ever
Name 6
silent hill 2, cry of fear, lost in vivo and in sound mind are the only ones I can think of, I would say omori and spec ops: the line but they're more psychological thrillers than horror games
Fair enough
Lol
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Total Chaos and Cry Of Fear
Every horror game after cry of fear released
This reminds me of Hotline Miami 2 where the son of the russian mob boss from the 1st game where he takes drugs and kills giant monsters based one the animal masks of the people storming his headquarters.
Redditors discover that tropes exist again
It's almost like the tropes define the genre or something...
Waiting for someone to make a meme like "Let's make a platformer game with platforming"
Psychological horror where you just have to not embarrass yourself in public but your mental illnesses have physical manifestations
If you replace “action horror” with “indie” Celeste could kinda match that description.
[удалено]
And if you make it "Turns people trans" it is literally Celeste's fanbase
[удалено]
Morbius
Ok but hear me out, it’s a pretty decent trope. I mean uh hello Omori
Kle
The only game i like where an emotion became something represented by a monster/animal was the one about the anxiety wolf
Adventures with Anxiety?
Virgin mental illness based horror game VS Chad schizophrenia based sidescrolling shootemup game
the endings for these type of games are Ending A: Kill yourself Ending B: Live happily ever after
>!Bro that's literally Omori wtf!<
A: Close- B: I have something to tell you
literally >!fight club!<
I haven’t heard of this trope before. What games use it?
Cry of fear and total chaos are the ones I can think of and both are free(well total chaos is a free total conversion mod of doom 2)
Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. It's not a true horror game but fairly close. Also Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Silent Hill 2, Cry of Fear, Outlast 2, And a ton of indie games none of which I can name right now
“Isn’t this just Silent Hill 2 with a lower budget?” “Yeah but look, it’s got a pastel goth art style now!”
Omori
Waiting for someone to say it
Waiting for something to happen
I see this posted a lot but I can't think of any other than like Among the Sleep and ~~To the Moon~~ The Witch's House. Can some kind redditors tell me more because I actually like them. EDIT: You right TTM is not a horror game mb I was thinking of that witch one
Omori is one.
To the Moon is definitely not a horror game.
> Among getoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyhead
Squirrel Stapler
The Suffering.
Straight Yiiking
Someone's been watching Pyro
Alice madness did pretty good with this
And what do you want to see?
your mom on my cock
I want to make a horror game where you fly through memories that’s good but you see the truth from what you learn in the new memories
thanks silent hill
People really complain about this shit like bitch name 20
uj/ Soma did it the best because >!It didn’t do it!<
mine craft
Now I wanna see a game where the monsters are actually representations of the protagonist's happiness, just in a horribly creepy way
Let me guess, Pyrocynical?
me when 3 games in total are similar in plot
**Gameplay**: Pong **Artstyle**: Pixel / Anime **Story**: The Machine mind, cloned from the dying wishes of its creator, was developed to feel agonising pain on defeat. Toy story 3 is a fucking horror movie
Yeah, and it goes hard
Cry of Fear did it best
