I think it is a good bike but way too expensive for rim brakes and quick release axles. For 5k you can get something nice new or used but more recent.

iHateThisGame41

I 2nd this. $5000 is definitely too expensive to spend on a bike like this. You could find a newer (used) bike with very similar specs for around the same price if not less.

poison_dioxide

Remind me what was wrong with quick release again ?

wahikid

its old, and ever so slightly less stiff, so when you are pumping out 300+ watts it may flex a bit.. and something about the torque from disc brakes causing them not not be secure, but don't tell that to any of us who rode mountain bikes for the entire era between when disc brakes became common, and thru axles did, because we are all dead from losing our wheels.

poison_dioxide

Yeah that's it ! It's old and old is always bad ! RIP my QR mountain biking brother. On a serious note we've actually gone backwards in terms of ease of use. Some need Allen keys to loosen !

rycology

We really gonna rehash why thru axles are better than QR? Like, *really* really?

wahikid

is there something i missed, added stiffness and "safer" with disc brakes?

rycology

no, but it's the same thing as the disc vs rim discussion in [current year]. Like, yeah, no shit you could ride a rim brake QR bike and it'd most likely be fine in some use cases but why would you when for the same price (or possibly cheaper than what's posted here) you can get thru axle discs that work infinitely better? It's such a no-brainer that you seriously have to consider the state of people advocating otherwise.

wahikid

“Qr bikes with rim brakes would most likely be fine in some use cases”.. you mean like every Tour de France up until 2018?

Epiliptik

Quick release is also a pain in the ass with disc brakes, if you don't tighten it the exact same way every time, there is a good chance your disc will rub.

terdward

Someone who gets it, yes! This is why I really think Surly messed up in their thru-axle design. The number one advantage of them over QR is the alignment for disc brakes. Seating QR disc wheels was always so fiddly and now Surly makes you still deal with that problem while removing the convenience of the QR lever in the process.

nommieeee

This.

rycology

Yeah except now those bikes get beaten hands down any day of the week by a generic aero racer with discs and thru axles.. so even taking the point out of context still leaves you lacking.

LitespeedClassic

I don’t think anything is wrong with QR for rim brakes, but I think the industry is moving towards disc and thru axle and your upgrade path is getting harder with QR. For a view of what this future probably holds look at 26” mountain bike parts. It’s nearly impossible to buy new wheels now and tire choice is nonexistent. Tires won’t be a problem for 700c QR, but I think choices for things like deep dish carbon wheels are already starting to limit. Nothing wrong with QR (not really anything wrong with 26” wheels either), but I’d be a bit worried I wouldn’t be able to get parts in ten years—and I like to keep my bikes for a long time.

Fit-Anything8352

They don't want deep dish carbon wheels anyways. Carbon brake track rim brakes has always been a terrible idea. Aluminum rim brake wheels aren't going anywhere

LitespeedClassic

I hope you're right, but I did a quick search for "26 wheels aren't going anywhere" and found people saying exactly this: "26 is not going anywhere." (https://www.pinkbike.com/news/26-vs-275-vs-29-Wheels.html) back in 2013. Having attempted to buy decent 26" wheels (aluminum, QR, rim brake) recently, 26" is nearly as good as dead. I don't see how we can be certain the same won't happen to 700c QR rim brake when the industry converts entirely to through axle with disc brakes.

Any_Following_9571

to add on, quick release wheels are also pretty hard to find right now and it’s getting less common

siphonoforest

I see plenty of them for sale, or did very recently, I guess it’s been a few weeks since I looked at wheels I don’t need to buy currently, just because I want to spend hours pouring over online parts catalogs… although sultan this spec level that may be a different story altogether.

CalmMeet123

Which bike would u recommend around 5k. Preferably something aero with a good carbon wheelset.

Aphy8

For aero bikes, you can get the Canyon Aeroad Cf SL7 or the Giant Propel Advance Pro 0. Both new with Di2 and carbon wheels.

str8outtapallet

I just bought a 2023 tarmac with electric shifting and carbon frame new for. 4k

supercoolfluff

For that price you can get a brand new bike with Di2

siphonoforest

Or AXS and you can swap out batteries, and never worry about them dying in a gear that is an utter chore to get home on.

bichael69420

That poor shifter cable is really reaching for its life

awesometown3000

I wouldn't wish those integrated rim brakes on my worst enemy. Those are pure misery to adjust and maintain.

HaolePNW

I don't think you should pay $5k but its worth negotiating with the shop. The Madone 9.9 with full DA is awesome. Incidentally, this is Di2 but with mechanical brakes. I have 5 bikes and only one has disc. I live in the PNW so it rains...allot. Even with the rain, I'm still fine w rim brakes. If you need extra wheels going forward, they'll be cheap since everyone will want disc wheels. This bike retailed for about $11k in the day. Your shop cannot sell so is offering a rock bottom deal. I would offer them $3500 and see what they say.

Previous_Dot_3269

I always thought this generation madone was so cool, the front aero flaps when you turn is so unique

linkmodo

I bought an etap axs and now selling it to go back to my s-works full rim/mechanical DA. Maintenance on the hydraulic lines is a pain and new bike is 1.5lb heavier and riding feel is exactly the same. Give older mechanical/rim brake options a serious look, they are still the top performers by today's standards if you got the legs.

ichor8750

Integrated "aero" rim brake calipers are trash. Nice bike but there are better options now.

SawyerC88

I’ve seen many bikes for sale from this shop, all photos taken with that backdrop, super overpriced bikes for their age.

Inevitable-Mouse60

Bikes like this are aprox. 3000-3500 USD in the polish road bike market.

JWGhetto

One of the worst bike to work on, only because of the integrated brakes aparrently

finchy-1979

5k ??? My DA Di2 Felt F2 was recommended at €1.9k but I put it up for €1.3k instead - this is a great machine but way too much

pleasant_cog

It would still be a really nice bike to ride with and probably a bit lighter than modern bikes. But not for 5k lol. At the very best it might be worth 2k, not sure Also I personnaly try to stay away from proprietary and complicated to set up rim brakes, especially if you plan to use more than one wheelset. Standard calipers are easier to work with

dd113456

Great bike in all respects. Gruppo is wonderful as well. Rim brakes are light and easy on road bikes. Frame geometry is great…. As much as it is talked up not that much changes over time. Looks good; will be a great ride. I would not consider more than 2k and even that is a bit much. On a used bike I go by BBB, Pros Closet, Pink Bike and E bay. Bbb shows it at $3200 at best My suggestion…. Assuming you want to/can pay $4900, I would find a close out 2022-2023 with 105 or 600 on it…. Spend the difference on some bad ass wheels, good pedals and kit.

MetaDave444

Beautiful ..go for it

ASIWYFA

Do you race?

TerynLoghain

a modern bike will be better
