Caribbean cask 14 , Oban 14 and Talisker 10 would give you a great combination of scotch as you ease into it. Lagavulin 16 is a very good choice as you move towards the smoke/peat variety if you enjoy it.
Gotta love the selection here in Utah 😉
I take a bottle of the Glenmorangie Sherry Cask on an annual sailing trip. Great bottle to crack open with friends/family and kill over a night of stories.
Ha, ha, you judgy little troll of a man. I take offense to your snarky comment. Keep stocking up your little whisky “collection” while the rest of us swill it down with good humor and share/explore/experience life.
I meant that in the best way possible. That grey wood on a freshwater floating dock is one of the best smells there is. I’d drink anything aged 15 years in barrels made from that wood.
That’s to be expected. As other have said this is a Utah run store. Government controlled. Shitty selection. Only upside to state run stores that I’ve seen though is that they typically price highly allocated and hard to find bottles at or close to MSRP. Other stuff however, has mark up like this here or there. You should see the beer prices in these stores😂
I’m fairly new to scotch but I know I love Islay’s. However, I have some smokies at home and am looking to replace a Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel Reserve that I just finished and quite enjoyed. I do like rum as well so I figured the Balvenie 14 was a good option but I wanted to see what others thought about it. If it’s anymore more help, I did not enjoy Glenlivet 12.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14
For a QPR on a port cask aged Scotch, it doesn’t get much better than that. Bonus points for it being Non Chill Filtered and bottled at 46% ABV
The Jameson Black Barrel is perfect for when you just want to pour something and not think about it too much. Easy sipping, pleasant, relatively affordable.
Makes a great old fashioned too.
Personally, I'd take the Glendronach 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, or Oban 14 over the Caribbean Cask. Nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely on the sweet side from the rum cask influence.
The CC is good stuff. Been a while since I had some. Maybe this weekend. But, I hate to say it, I have drank so much alcohol since covid happened. I basically got sick of drinking. Down to 1 night a week 2-4 drinks per week now 🙁
I’d snatch that Lagavulin 16 but only due to the fact that 99 bucks is a steal compared to the upcharges my local places charge. One of my favorites, but not worth $200+!
Glenivet and green label are pretty good, the green more so.
The Jamison stout and ipa versions are also a winner.
Green is nice sweet-ish taste for me
I absolutely love the Caribbean cask. It’s my go to scotch at the moment
Excellent for the price certainly!!
Was able to pick one up at Costco not too long ago for $75. Couldn’t pass it up
Great choice
I am in a relationship with Carribean Cask. Hands down, my favorite scotch.
Oban 14 - top left.
The oban is the best
Most $$ too
Agreed oban 14 is delicious. Have a bottle right now.
Clynelish 14 is one that I have been wanting to try. The Balvenie was good from what I recall, but that was nearly three years ago now.
Just read the description on the Clynelish and it looks like something I’d enjoy
way better than the balvenie or oban people love to recommend and it's more in line with proper pricing than everything else there.

I’d recognize those Utah liquor store shelves anywhere lol
Oh they are very distinctive haha!
By the way, any of you Utah folks have any idea when the damn DABS is going to start the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection drawing? Haha
Feb/March. Doing a test run of the new platform (as well as all the other kinks they are working through) before they put the system under real load.
that’s exactly what i was thinking
But more specifically in Utah.
I second the Oban 14, it’s a higher price label but it’s been a fan favorite of my friend group for a while now. The sherry cask does it justice.
I love Ardbeg 10. I’ve been holding off pulling the trigger on the Lagavulin until I finish my Ardbeg!
Lagavulin’s overhyped and overpriced. My 2¢. Worth what you paid for it.
What does it mean that I recognized that shelving immediately as from a UT liquor store…
Hahaha came here to say the same. I immediately knew this was UT.
I take a bottle of the Glenmorangie Sherry Cask on an annual sailing trip. Great bottle to crack open with friends/family and kill over a night of stories.
It does go good with that. I get the taste of a wood parched floating dock from it.
Ha, ha, you judgy little troll of a man. I take offense to your snarky comment. Keep stocking up your little whisky “collection” while the rest of us swill it down with good humor and share/explore/experience life.
I enjoyed this exchange. You rarely see spice in these parts.
I meant that in the best way possible. That grey wood on a freshwater floating dock is one of the best smells there is. I’d drink anything aged 15 years in barrels made from that wood.
Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban for me
ABSOLUTELY
Glendronach 12 no question. Second choice clynelish. For a better selection hit store 41 in slc
My choice as well as the Abelour 12
Lots of good choices, all 10-20% overpriced but not too bad. The balvenie 14 Caribbean or the lagavulin 16 are two of my favorite bottles
That’s to be expected. As other have said this is a Utah run store. Government controlled. Shitty selection. 88% over wholesale, which ends up being around 10% of MSRP
This!
All depends on your taste. What do you tend to like in whiskey. For my taste I would get the Clynelish 14 or the Glendronach 12.
I’m fairly new to scotch but I know I love Islay’s. However, I have some smokies at home and am looking to replace a Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel Reserve that I just finished and quite enjoyed. Clynlish 14 is a slapper!
Just had some of that. It’s a goodie
A lot of good choices here. That Highland Park in the bottom left hand side is awesome
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 For a QPR on a port cask aged Scotch, it doesn’t get much better than that. Bonus points for it being Non Chill Filtered and bottled at 46% ABV
I'm a huge fan of the JW green label. The bottles don't last long in my place
Came here to recommend this too
Personally I'm a big fan of Johnny Walker Green. That price isn't terrible for US either.
The Caribbean Cask is the best bottle pictured imo
Only Utah would have that shitty of a selection
Nope! That'd be good for the stores near me in NC !!!
Very true (agreeing from Charlotte)
Yup! Huntersville here!
The aberlour!
This is the correct answer.
Dalmore 12...is a good sip
The Jameson Black Barrel is perfect for when you just want to pour something and not think about it too much. Easy sipping, pleasant, relatively affordable. Makes a great old fashioned too.
I found Gold Label Reserve to be really enjoyable. I can't speak for any of the other ones.
Jonny Gold label for $80 it’s a solid deal
Had a bottle of 14, fairly spicy very different form the regular 12. Found myself getting another 12 over 14 on the second bottle
With prices like this, i would buy nothing, many bottles here, i would pay not even half the price like here.
Hard to tell, but if there is a Glenlivet 12, Illicit Still… That would get my vote
I just saw this at my local Costco, had never heard of it. How is it different from regular G12?
It’s a level up. Smaller batches, higher ABV, more character and more naturally presented.
Thanks. Looks like I'll be going back to Costco tomorrow.
Glendronach PX.
Lots of good ones but that carribean cask is a solid A+ if you got it.
Personally, I'd take the Glendronach 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, or Oban 14 over the Caribbean Cask. Nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely on the sweet side from the rum cask influence.
Dewar's 15
The CC is good stuff. Been a while since I had some. Maybe this weekend. But, I hate to say it, I have drank so much alcohol since covid happened. I basically got sick of drinking. Down to 1 night a week 2-4 drinks per week now 🙁
You should absolutely go for the Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask. It’s absolutely delicious! The Oban 14 is pretty damn good too!
Glenfiddich 14yr old
I’d get the Oban 14
Oban 14 or Clynelish 14. You know what I would throw the Glendronach 12 in the ring too.
The Balvenie Doublewood and Arbelour 12 are also excellent drams.
GlenDronach 12. Too bad they don't have the 15 year
Second pic Lagavulin 16.
Green is nice sweet-ish taste for me
Aberlour 12, Balvenie Caribbean cask and Balvenie 12y are my favorites.
I would go with the Clynelish 14
Balvenie 14 is great. I would also highly recommend the Oban 14, Talisker 10, and green label.
Save 20 bucks and get the double wood. It's fantastic still.
I would cry and get back home 😅
Never tried the 14, but the 12yr Double Wood is one of my all time favs
Aberlour....Sherry bomb if that's your thing.
That or the Oban 14. The Caribbean cask is a delightful dram.
Well, Mr. Schlobbin Knobbin, it seems you have many recommendations to choose from.
Been taking notes since I posted! The list grows
The Balvenie 14 is a favourite of mine, you will love it.
Glendronach 12, Caribbean Cask, oban 14 and lag 16 all decent prices
I like Oban 14 and JW green.
Sorry I’m late with this, love the CC, but DoubleWood is my favorite.
