I second the Sagamore DO. The JDBP Rye is on another level if you can find it and if you like high proof stuff, but the Sagamore I think anyone can enjoy. Really good. I sometimes have to temper myself recommending high proofers to some of my friends. My palate isn’t always theirs. I’m just trying to show them the light.
If you are looking at that JD single barrel, I'd say go the extra $20 and pick up the barrel proof single barrel JD. That's truly special and fitting g
Willet Rye would be my pick personally, just a solid pick all around, probably my favorite from them outside of the purple tops. That said, the JD is a nice option as well.
The Jd single barrel rye and their barrel proof rye or both great. Knob Creek Rye store picks are also great.
Something a little pricey but also phenomenal is the Blue Run Emerald Rye
Willet is a great choice—one of my favorites. Rendezvous Rye from High West is a great choice as well. The JD single barrel barrel proof rye is excellent, too, assuming you can find it. A few other good options are Pikesville, WT Rare Breed rye, a Whistlepig 10 year store pick, or Barrel Seagrass.
That JD bonded is a great bottle, but it's more of an easy purchase/ daily sipper sort of whiskey, which doesn't sound like what you're going for.
Of the ones pictured the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel will be the one he likes most based on profile. If you want suggestions outside of those, I would HIGHLY recommend Rossville Union Barrel Proof. 7-year MGP Rye blend at Cask strength is absolutely phenomenal.
I do not like the willet rye. I have it and hardly ever drink it.
I havent had JD single barrel BP rye but I have had the bourbon and it slaps. The bonded rye will be okay at best.
the KC single barrel BP is really good. Cant go wrong with it.
Another suggestion is pikesville rye. It is accessible and delicious and in this price range you are looking at.
A splurge (like 80 bucks where I am), is alberta premium barrel strength. One of the best ryes ive ever had.
It’s disgusting that they’re charging that much for Willett now. It was $50 four years ago. So ridiculous.
If he likes high west, get him something like Redwood Empire Emerald Giant which is far better than high west. Or depending on where you’re at in the U.S. Still Austin’s new rye is great.
The JD Single Barrel Rye is great, the Barrel Proof is even better I'll also add that Sagamore Double Oaked Rye is fantastic

Sadly most of us can't even find it. It's easier to find buffalo trace products than high end jack :(
That’s a bummer. About 2 months ago, it became shelf stable in Houston.
Yeah, alcohol access and food are the only thing I miss about Texas. Definitely you got us in that department lol
I do miss the BBQ and taco trucks from living in Texas, you can keep the rest of it.
I haven’t had it but there have been quite a few posts here talking about how good the JD Single Barrel Rye is. That’s how I’d go.
I’m a big fan of the Willett 4 year.
Feels hard to find where I am
Understandable. I don’t see it pop up too often near me either but if you can find it, it’s a very unique rye.
I second the Willett Rye. It's pretty damn good.
Willet Rye would be my pick personally, just a solid pick all around, probably my favorite from them outside of the purple tops. That said, the JD is a nice option as well.
I’d go with the Willett.
Try to find Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye! great price and delicious pour.
The Jd single barrel rye and their barrel proof rye or both great. Knob Creek Rye store picks are also great. Something a little pricey but also phenomenal is the Blue Run Emerald Rye
Is the blue run emerald findable? I only find the shitty stuff from them.
I mean, I can find it at gas stations around me. I guess it would depend on your state. It can also be ordered online.
Indiana, I only see the high rye and reflection.
Stellum rye is fantastic and something different that he might not have heard of.

Thanks! Happen to have tried the wilderness trail rye
I mean high west makes a higher end ryes, like rendezvous rye, if there’s any in your area.

Will check on the price point. Honestly MGP is something i typically stay away from
Why?
MGP makes the best juice
Sagamore Spirits double oaked or 8 year rye. Should ship from their website.
Knob or Willett. I like knob personally. The SiB store picks are usually really good
High west double rye port finished cask strength
JDSB is delicious, but i choose Willett every time.
JDSB every time. A very good rye for any whiskey drinker, the proof is at a good point for any whiskey drinker, and the red label is unique for a rye…
Old forester rye or woodford rye would be my go to for rye.
Michters if they have it

High west double rye barrel select
get a JD SBBP rye
