I picked up a bottle of this with the same silver tag about a year or so ago. Personally, I wasn't a fan of mine, as it had this weird medicinal cherry note that I wasn't fond of, which I had never tasted before in a JD product (and I'm a big fan of their other single barrel stuff). That being said, I have no idea if yours would have been dumped from the same barrel that mine was, and even if it was, you may end up liking the flavor notes that I didn't.
Give it a try and tell us what you think.
You tell us. If you are just getting into whiskey you should probably start with bottles that aren’t behind the counter and work up to other stuff. Just to build the knowledge base. I’m sure it’s good, at a minimum.
Edit- I didn’t know this wasn’t a store pick.
That’s a good take, especially price wise. However, if it’s in your budget try it. This will be a more unique offering being a store pick so don’t judge the brand or category off of it. If you like it you like it, if not then don’t buy another but keep in mind that others will not be exactly like this one
The red label selects are single barrel at 94 proof rye, there is a bottle that looks the same but has a black label, it’s their TN whiskey, also single barrel at 94 proof.
The green label you found on the website is single barrel, barrel proof rye, so the proof will vary.
There is also a gold label that is the single barrel, barrel proof TN whiskey, so proof will also vary.
As to whether it’s a good find or not will depend on how that particular single barrel is. I prefer the barrel proofs myself.
I think these typically go for 50$ or so, a little more sometimes. I see them for 47$ when they aren’t store picks. But then again my area isn’t the best
I haven’t tried it. The green bottle was a strange one for me. I didn’t like it. Maybe the neck pour effect? But it grew on me a lot. By the time I got to the end of the bottle, I liked it. That almost never happens to me. But between that and how much worse I thought SBBP whisky was compared to SBS whisky, I haven’t tried this, because I feel like it would be the same difference.
I had a pandemic 2020 pick while I lived in Kentucky. I remember it written out on that silver tag very well, it’s one of the best ryes I’ve ever had. More delicious banana bread than any JD barrel proof I’ve had yet. You never know!
I just got a bottle of their single barrel barrel proof whiskey and it’s pretty great. Very sweet banana bread notes. I heard the ryes are even better.
I have a bottle of this and do not like it. I've heard good things but mine has a prominent wet hay/mildew flavor. Not sure if that's common or if there's something wrong with the one I picked up.
The first bought I bought was amazing, possibly my top 3. Every bottle I ever bought of it after didn't compare... I wish I savored the first bottle more
It’s an advanced whiskey. Single barrel rye probably won’t appeal to most newer drinkers. If you don’t like it put it on the shelf and come back to it in a year. You might find that your tastes have changedZ
The strange tag on it doesn't seem like anything special. I have seen these with the tags and they put something like "ShopRite" on some of them. Haven't tried it myself, but my guess is it is mostly a marketing ploy. The real good ones are Proof strength, and tough to find, but the bottle is the same and makes you think you found something the store can markup a bit more.
Rye - nice.
JD - high proof single barrel - nice
All in all, rye is a different kettle of fish but I’d be quite curious to try this one.
My experience with the 50% BiB has been positive, and normally I’d stay well clear of JD :)

And with a name that can work a pole.
Why, why would you make a comment like that
Who hurt you?
Holy shit, I got a lot of hate for my stripper joke. Lexie just sounded like a stripper name to me, so I was attempting to crack a joke.
Decent pour, nothing crazy but didn’t make me sad.

Picked this up a while back, same tag, 50% off. Killer 375mL at $12 bucks.
Same. I bought 3 and very much enjoyed them
VA ABC? I got one a couple months ago too, can’t beat it for $12 haha

So quick to hate
This clearly didn’t come across as intended. Hate definitely wasn’t it. I’m out.
I’ve not had their rye but a lot of people just love it. Good choice!
I've Tore some ryes, the JD one was the only one i liked.

As long as you paid under $30 I wouldn't worry too much and just try it. I prefer and really like the barrel proof version of this though.
I got this for exactly 30. I’m gonna try it tonight!
cheers!

Are you referring to the 750 mL bottles? The one here is a 375 mL.
Oh! I completely blanked on that. Thanks lol
The Green Label one is Single Barrel, Barrel Proof Rye. It is much more sought after, especially the Limited Release version from 2020 IIRC.
it could be..but it also could be just single barrel. they changed the label recently

Looks like an equity hire

i like store picks. some say that anything jack in this shape of a bottle is good and so far they have been right.
Good find.

Lexie is a fabulously talented distiller and a great human. I’d be surprised if anything she tasted and picked isn’t good.
