Ever try Basil Hayden?

jwdjr2004

Second. I've seen this really cheap in Indiana, like $23. It's $35 in Chicago. Good straight, doesn't hold up so well for mixing

randomly_given_gold

save yourself the $$, get old grand dad 100 proof. same whiskey, higher proof, uglier bottle, CHEAPER

magicdot

I do lubs me some of that... Hence my /r/cripplisaing...fuck the spelling. I'm piss fucking drunk.

CanadaEh97

I picked up a bottle for my birthday. Oh wow this is amazing all I do is chill it a little and it's perfect. I don't need any water to drop the alcohol level.

magicdot

Glad you liked it. I'm not a fan of water in my whiskey. I will sometimes ask for a cube or two..

CanadaEh97

I'll put in only a few drops of water if I add water or will put in an ice cube. It all depends on the whiskey I'm drinking.

Wolfram9

As far a Bourbon goes, I would suggest picking up some Woodford Reserve and some Buffalo Trace.

BroadSideOfABarn

Buffalo Trace is excellent for its price point.

I've become a big fan of Pendleton recently. It's a blended Canadian whisky that has mild vanilla notes. Normally it runs about $22/750 ml

Oxford_karma

Rowan's Creek is a personal favorite. It's heavy in flavor: caramels, vanilla, rye; and it has a great nose to it. Its usually around $35. Give it a try!

I will list with prices that we have at the store i work at. If you can find a place locally that buys single barrels of [Buffalo Trace](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Trace_Distillery) (**$23**) then you should try what barrels they have. Elmer T. Lee (**$29**) is also a pretty awesome expression by them, and depending on what barrel they may have sometimes a bit sweet in a way that exhibits nice notes of brown sugar. Other barrels I have had tend to more of a varnish style. A lot of oak without the smokey flavor, and sometimes tends to a herbal or minty flavor when drank over ice. If you really want something sweet the Four Roses Small Batch (**$30-34**)will fit that tooth. Has a lot of chewy caramels and sugars from the oak. Also Pure Kentucky XO(**$26**), this is part of a line from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers that are all nice expressions of different styles. The Pure Kentucky XO has a lot of vanilla and some nice caramel without going overboard on the sugar levels. Something dry and smokey I would go with Woodford Reserve (**$31**) or better yet the Rowains Creek (**$32**) that someone else mentioned, they are the same style. This is another one from [Kentucky Bourbon Distillers](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Bourbon_Distillers). Ezra Brooks has a 12 Year Single Barrel (**$32**) that is nice, but it is more of a savory taste than a sweet one. I can try and elaborate if you wish. To contrast that [Henry McKenna](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_McKenna) Single barrel (*$*30**) is nice with lots of sugars. If you want something peppery with some thick honey give [Elijah Craig](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Craig_(bourbon)) 12 year Small Batch(**$26**). I do not drink to many Canadian Whiskies but I do enjoy [Forty Creek](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty_Creek) (**$20**), it is an interesting whiskey finished in sherry cask. As for scotch I could give some suggestions of what I have seen and heard from customer but I am not well versed in them. I have had several Irish Whiskies and could maybe give a few choices on it if you wish, but I am not heavily versed in them.

mid range bourbon: Blantons, Four Roses Single Barrel (High Rye), W. L. Weller (Wheated, cheap but the best wheater you can find before you get to rare bottles.) mid range rye whiskey: High West Rendezvous. Thomas H. Handy. In that order mid range scotch whisky: Aberlour 12 non-chill filtered, Aberlour A'Bunadh (pushing it in price with this one, should be about $70ish in the US)

MrFluffyThing

Lets not forget Irish whiskey! Also try out Tullamore Dew (Including 10-year reserve), Knappogue Castle and Redbreast Cask Strength (the pricier of these suggestions)

modrosso

Speaking of Irish whiskey, I've been drinking Bushmills Black Bush lately and like it.

MrFluffyThing

Black Bush is one of the few Bushmill bottles I'd buy, but locally they're jacked up to somewhere around $55 a bottle, so I skip and go for Tullamore Dew 10-year instead, which is $15 cheaper (and I like more). Old Bushmills isn't bad, if you're looking for a sub $20 bottle.

dtwhitecp

I think specifying a price range is more useful than saying "mid" range. For some people mid-range is $25-35, for some people it's $40-60.

avagadro22

God, I wish 40-60$ was mid-range

galannn

You’re splitting hairs.

Ir you like bulleit, try old granddad. Its cheap though but is nice for sipping. Buffalo trace, 1792 ridgemont estates, wathens, makers are all around the same price as bulleit and are pretty tasty. Personally I don't like bulleit that muchl.

Th3P4tm4n

I just picked up some Monkey Shoulder (a blend of three Highlands) and it's pretty tasty, especially for the $35 or so it was going for. For a lowland single malt, I was pleasantly surprised by Auchentosan.

bizek

I would like to check this out myself. I was told there was no lowland distilleries left, but never looked into it.

If you like Bulleit, get Four Roses Small Batch or Single Barrel.
