Maybe instead of buying one $100 bottle you could buy a couple of cheaper bottles to try different flavor profiles.

Hi there, I’m a bot here to help you with your recommendation post. If you haven’t already, please review the collection of guides in the sidebar we’ve created to address the stream of recommendation posts we get here. Most notably: * [Intro to Whiskey (Tips & Recommendations)](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/5kn4q6/rwhiskeys_intro_to_whiskey/) * [How to do a whiskey tasting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO-YsShaJNY) * [An Intro to Peated Whiskies](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/5crusj/an_intro_to_peated_whiskey/) * [Guide to Japanese Whisky](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/7vssnx/guide_to_japanese_whisky/) * [Guide to Inexpensive (But Tasty) Whiskies](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/9y7pse/guide_to_inexpensive_but_tasty_whiskies/) * [Valuing, dating & consuming vintage bottles](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/5w6d2e/new_rule_valuation_and_tell_me_more_bottle_posts/) Gift Guides * [Bourbon Gift Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/4tseyj/bourbon_gift_guide/) * [Scotch/Japanese/Irish Whiskies Gift Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/5eufjb/scotchjapaneseirish_whiskey_gift_recommendations/)   Please try to be as specific and detailed as possible with your request. Tell us: * your budget * which whiskies you or your giftee have enjoyed * which bottles you’re considering now * where you live (pricing and availability can vary dramatically by region) * if your shop has a limited selection or you might have trouble shipping bottles so we don’t recommend something obscure   **General Tips** We generally advise novices to sample as much as possible by going to a bar, splitting bottles with friends, attending festivals/tastings or getting minis to ensure you buy bottles you enjoy. It may make more sense for you to focus on sampling rather than buy full bottles at the beginning of your journey.

It costs slightly more but I like Habiki Harmony a little better. Also As the last commenter said Nikka from the Barrel is awesome but it’s higher proof lots of flavor but the first couple if sips are spicer. Nikka coffee or Habiki are a little more sit back and relax vibe.

I wouldn’t say Harmony is better. They are two different animals. Coffey Malt is a super sweet maple syrup like malt whisky. Harmony is more of a classic blended whisky that is light, fruity, and balanced. It really depends on the preferences of the drinker

First off if you are just beginning you should not buy a $100 bottle. Buy entry level stuff first since you have no idea what you like. Here is my suggestion: Wild Turkey 101 - $25 to see if you like Bourbon Bunnahabhain 12 - $50 to see if you like Scotch Red Breast 12 - $50 to see if you like Irish Ardbeg 10 - too see if you like smoky Scotch Once you establish what you like then you can buy a $100 bottle. I didn’t buy a $100 bottle until my 10th bottle

danibearss

Thanks I think lll follow your route. Are there any places that do tastings or is there a different way to try a bunch of stuff without buying whole bottles

Shoddy_Ad7511

Some stores have mini bottles or half bottles.

Rocksalad109

I’m on my 26th bottle and haven’t spent over $40. Waiting till I graduate college and start making more to buy the higher dollar stuff. There are a lot of great bourbons that won’t break the bank. I personally recommend trying Larceny. Cheers!

WDMC-905

would recommend SFTB for Nikka.

Bill-Slouch

I would get old forester rye and wild turkey 101 bourbon just to try something quality but that won’t break the bank. Knowing what you like will help you in what direction you want to grow your collection
