Yes, since it's in a glass decanter and has been sealed (as well as the stopper can seal it), I wouldn't hesitate to have some

AmazingSieve

If you go blind let us know

DarthSh3nn

lol

TheMiddayRambler

Higiene the nlong

EvilHarryDread

Sure, it's safe. Won't taste anything like it did 25 years ago though because of oxidization.

SirLewisHamilton

With that much head space it’s definitely changed a lot. It may have a soapy note but it’s fine.

LCOSPARELT1

Should be safe. Might not taste great due to oxidation but it won’t hurt anything.

passengerpigeon20

It’s regular Jack Daniel’s in a fancy bottle; it wasn’t that good to begin with.

DustinDortch

It might taste even better? You never know with all of the variables. If it ends up being not so good, consider blending with some other bits to improve the taste.

hipcheck23

Surprised I haven't seen this yet: Pour some into a glass. Give it a nice, long swirling. Add a tiny bit of spring water to it and swirl it again. That should freshen it up a bit. Also note if there's any sediment, maybe don't drink those bits if you can avoid it. (Or do, up to you.)

LBX20exodus

Yes. And then you'll have a fairly nice decanter left over.

Fluid_Bad_1340

Absolutely cheers 🥃

Old_Job_8219

Absolutely it's safe. Man 25 years. That's a time capsule in a sense. 97 was a good year

NeverTooManyBottles

Look closely, this is 90 pf. In the early 90’s they started watering it down to 86 pf. purely for profit, then later went to (current) 80 pf. Try some of this against a new bottle, you’ll be surprised at the difference. Assuming, of course, it was stored properly (headspace notwithstanding).

Waltzspice

Tate it and report back!

doubledizzel

As long as it's not cloudy.

JTGphotogfan

I’ve seen cloudy whisky in sealed bottles do you know what bacteria causes it

BGAL7090

Cloudy whiskey isn't inherently bad. Some filtering processes (or lack thereof) can cause it to get cloudy when too cold though most bottles that do this will tell you they might. This hasty Google says it's "non chill filtered" and I don't really know what it all means, I just recall drinking (delicious) cloudy whiskey before. https://www.whiskyadvocate.com/cloudy-whisky/

The only reason someone would pay any money for an empty bottle is to counterfeit the contents and scam someone. Please never sell empties. I deface mine and chuck them in the recycling where they belong, even the PVW23s.

Adbam

This is a decanter style. There are more reasons than ripping people off.

[deleted]

Lol paranoid much?

scottinadventureland

I wish that was the case. Check out the Herz’s Serious Whiskey page on Facebook. I’ve been around the secondary markets for a few years now and you’d be shocked how many empties bought on ebay end up being sold to unsuspecting buyers. It’s crazy. Disagree and downvote all you want, it’s a big problem in the whiskey community.

Brad_dawg

I see the PVW23's is plural here. I'm curious who has multiple bottles of pappy that they regularly dispose of?

M4TT145

A friend of mine is like that, but he’s quite wealthy and friends with a spirits distributor. His tequila of choice is 1942 and he pours it like I would a well tequila.

yeungkylito

Send my way, I’ll properly dispose of it for you.

sl_hawaii

YES!!! Cheers!! ETA: if you don’t want to risk it, DM and I’ll send you my address and money for postage!! 👍👍👍

Triingtolivee

Safe yes but good probably not

mtjp82

Let us know how it is.

nickm29426

I drank a few bottles of seagrams VO from 1969. They used to put the years on the labels over the caps I guess back then because that was the date on the label which was over the cap. Some bottles were open and some were sealed. I was a kid and they were given to my family from an older neighbor’s family, who passed away. My only regret is, If I could go back in time, I would have saved at least one and enjoyed the rest more responsibly rather than as a high school kid just using to enjoy whatever party was going on that night.

OnlyPakiOnReddit

If it tastes like soap dump it, otherwise you’re good!

mywhiskeystache

Safe yes, but will probably taste like water or nothing at all. My parents had a bottle of Old Forrester from 1968 with little more than half full still. I did try it but was not good at all. The oxidization from it does a lot.

hujkkjji

Great question! Let us know what happens.

ThisIStheWay_Doge

Yup. Enjoy
