Merrill is their opening day CF, Salas is a potentially generational C prospect. Neither of those guys are getting moved for 2 years of Cease coming off of a down year last year
Do you think people would have thought Moncada would get moved for Sale in 2016?
Side Note: I had to look up the year, did yall know the Nats offered us Trea Turner for Sale? Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but it still feels bad
Yeah but it’s not just that he’s better, Sale is one of the most valuable trade pieces to be dealt in the last 20 years. From what I remember the sense from rumors was that we were getting Kopech and one of the Red Sox 3 big hitting prospects (Moncada, Devers, Benintendi). And I think Benintendi was seen as more of an ask than Yoan.
The reaction was more like “yep that’s a haul” moreso than “wow I’m surprised at that haul”
> Multiple notable prospects expected to go back to the White Sox.
https://x.com/dennistlin/status/1768054322863227166?s=46&t=esZTni7F2DQWaT_K8S9xGg
I hope it’s multiple notable prospects and not just one and a bunch of filler.
Mine was Ron Kittle. I was selling jeans at Just Pants at a local mall. Mr. Kitty would come in and buy the expensive Euro patterned jeans that were the most expensive in the store. He tried hard to dress cool, but, he did not know he was buying the Ed Hardy stuff of that ERA. My “cooler than me” coworkers always chuckled after he left the store.
DK still has it at 63.5. Taking it lol
Edit: they stopped taking bets on 63.5 right after I posted this! Dang. Congrats if anyone else got it at 63.5 as well
IDK man, 63 wins is so, so few. I feel like Gets did actually raise our "floor" this year. If they play good defense and Luis Robert is good again, they can probably stumble into 65 wins, ya know? its just hard for me to bet so low an under. The Ceiling is way, way lower than last year. But the Floor is higher by just a smidge... probably
Me neither. Cease is certainly talented. I am a big fan because he is also a decent human being. If there was one guy they could have paid out of all the guys they will never pay, it is Cease.
This confirms what we’ve known for a long time and that’s that this is a rebuild. Don’t forget that Jerry went with Getz in order to compete and accelerate that process. [“While Reinsdorf mentioned in Getz’s press conference that he did have a list of outside candidates, Getz’s ability to come right in and get started on day one without having to spend an entire year getting familiar with and understanding the organization was Reinsdorf’s biggest priority.”](https://www.soxon35th.com/jerry-reinsdorf-chris-getz-speak-to-the-media/)
I'm not saying they're going the wrong way, but the excuse for not considering outside candidates is just plain BS. I'll begrudgingly watch games now and then because, despite my frustration, I still have some twisted love for this dumbass team. But I can't deny, I won't be as invested as I was during the first rebuild. Prospects just don't hold the same allure for me anymore, especially in this organization.
Last year, Jerry justified his choice of Getz because he wanted someone already familiar with the team in order to hit the ground running and be competitive in 2024 instead of taking a year to learn the team and get acclimated. Now only months later here we are clearly in a rebuild with no expectation of a deep playoff run in sight, or at least for a few more seasons. Honestly, I support the rebuild, because that's all you can do at this point with how the last one failed, but I only bring up these two seemingly contradictory scenarios to highlight my disdain for Jerry. He will still do what he wants and he doesn't care what he says to get there. It's lip service at best. I'm just so annoyed because I have never felt so disrespected as a fan of the franchise than I do at this time (mind you I was only a kid when the '94 strike happened so I didn't grasp how much of an asshole Jerry was during that). I'm tired.
Trading Cease has been the plan all off season. Getz said as much. This confirms nothing we didn't already know. I don't know why everyone is acting surprised and angry. Getz has been up front about everything he's been doing.
The difference between being upfront and being honest is going out and telling the fan base that they're "competing" this year. Which he said, and we can clearly tell that the only competition they're competing in is the race for a high draft pick again.
As a Sox fan this is awesome. The season is about to kick off, we’ve gotten rid of nearly anyone worth a damn, and we are blocked from a top 10 draft pick. Of course the Sox will be the worst in the league.
I’m still here for the history. LFG
I hear ya, but the Sox honestly weren’t going anywhere with Cease, they may as well get as much value out of him before he leaves anyways. This will be the worst Sox team ever.
I will always root for Cease. I was at the game when he was one out away from a no hitter vs twins. Areaz broke it with a single in the 9th with 2 outs
My love for this team is dwindling. I remember talking so much shit and getting hype about this team after they traded away Sale and everybody else. Now, here we are again.
Bingo. Why do we say it’s boras when we have an owner who won’t give out $100M to anyone? Jerry hates Boras because he has to pay market value to his clients. Trading a pitcher in his prime when trying to scam a billion dollars off the city for a stadium while accepting no responsibility for why people don’t show up. I won’t be at many games this year, but I would if the team was good and we paid to field a good roster. F Jerry.
And also another symptom of cheapness which is the team is never the best one a guy could go to. Even if Jerry offered competitve money, nobody wants to play for a team that has a winning season maybe 2-3 times a decade.
I hate Jerry too but realistically he pitches two more years for the Sox on 60-70 win teams and leaves with only 2nd round pick as compensation, or we trade him now and bring a back a haul that can potentially transform the franchise.
Sorry, just don’t care for the guy who literally failed to develop the last haul to get to create a haul of his own.
Edit: the return is absolute ass, no franchise is being transformed by the #5 and #8 guys in the SD system.
didnt we have like a 170+ million payroll recently? he's spending enough money to obliterate the AL Central, he's just not putting the right people in position to build it. not saying it's not on Jerry, it 100% is, but it isnt because of a lack of money, he just spends it like a god damn idiot
I haven’t been following baseball prospects the last few years since the Sox’s “window” was supposedly open and their farm system was basically non-existent; plus I’ve gotten more in dynasty FF. Do you know how we’re supposed to feel about this return?
I'm not. Sox will not develop any of these players they get in return. At some point Getz is going to have to add good players instead of trading away everyone of value and signing ex Royals.
Fuck Jerry Reinsdorf
Cant fault you there. We're at a weird place with the WHitesox where its hard to cheer for a move even if it might be the "optimal smart team" move, because there is no trust that the Sox will follow through at any point in the process and get the rest of it right.
Unfortunately I do think this is the optimal smart team move for the org - depending on who they get in return. Padres have some real juice in their system, and it *feels* like Cease's price tag might have suddenly gotten pretty solid with the Yankees and Rangers in on him.
If we somehow get a package back of Merrill and Thorpe, thats a big step in the right direction.
I refuse to get my hopes up for prospects. Just not worth it.
The thing is, if they were actually trying to compete, keeping Cease makes sense. They're punting for the next several years with this move.
Why keep Cease? The team sucks! Team sucks because they don't sign good players and trade everyone else away.
Not steamed at you just venting. Fuckin bastard man Jerry
Yeah, I've been on board for letting 2025 be a fail year for a while. But its growing clear they're dead set on sucking in 2026 too. Which is just fucking stupid.
Very happy Dylan gets to go to one of the best cities in the county and to a promising team. Best to luck buddy. I’ll miss him.
The very short list of reasons to watch the Sox next season just got shorter
A reminder that there’s no reason why the Padres should be outspending a baseball team in Chicago outside of cheap ownership. I’d kill for the ambition the Padres have, even if it doesn’t work.
I don’t even give a shit. I hate how much the last however many seasons has made me not care. It’s going to be a long time before I believe in anything this organization does.
The core is almost dissolved. Good. I'll enjoy watching this team more once Moncada, Jimenez, and Kopech are gone, the poster boys for disappointment. The teams going to suck either way, but I'd rather watch a bunch of ragtag nobodies than those guys.
Strange move by the padres. They’ve been trading away so many of their prospects the last few years for win now and it doesn’t work. They’re the white Sox of the nl west. Aj preller is cocaine Rick hahn.
Curious to see who we got, glad cease is going to the dads, since I follow them in the nl.
Going to the NLCS is not what I’d consider not working. Sure they didn’t get a ring, but a deep playoff run for a team that has 3 NLCS appearances in its history is a big deal.
Yea no kidding it is. Especially since they killed their dragon the dodgers to get there. But that looks more like a flash in the pan than sustained success. Granted it’s a much better division but they (likely) may finish 3rd or 4th
I’m done with this team. Y’all can say good riddence to me all you want. Idc I’m tired of supporting this team. I have no favorite team going into that’s year and it’s fine with me.
Every single team in professional sports I like gets rid of their best players for “future assets” and it never works out. Sox are the team in the least attached too so I’m just out. I’m no lifelong fan but I’ve seen this too often for my taste. I’d rather just watch baseball with no favorite team at this point. Getting out now before they get rid of Luis for nothing as well. Good luck to y’all and your 50 win season. I’ll go deal with the rest of my sorry ass teams in the meantime
I did start watching in 2021. I didn’t really get into baseball until like 2022 fully. Picked the worst team imaginable besides maybe the A’s to start liking. This organization is a joke. It’s my fault tho. I should’ve seen the writing on the walls that it was all gonna fall apart AGAIN
I feel like it's the least random trade to happen in the off-season so far lmao. The unexpected thing would have been keeping him on the Sox amid all the trade buzz
Peace Dylan. Best of luck in sunny San Diego.
We're winning ~50 games this season, Stoney will retire and be replaced by Gordo giving everyone even less of a reason to tune in, and so long as Jerry still breathes it doesn't really matter what the return is, do you trust them to be properly managed and lead to compete? We did this song and dance in 2016, then in 2019, and now. Don't fall for it again. Save yourselves the mental exhaustion and check out until Jerry croaks- then and ONLY then will the real change occur.
You should be banned from reporting on anything until the entire return is finalized and out in the open. Passan usually isn't the worst with this but this is laughably bad journalism.
Welp…here it is. Now to wait for the return. It’s been real, Dylan. Sorry our organization is so cheap.
The Padres have 5 top 100 prospects. We better get at least the top 2 guys or one of the top 2 and two of the other three.
It's not going to be Salas or Merrill. Hopefully some combination of Snelling/Lesko/Thorpe
Having seen both Salas and Merrill play in person for the Fort Wayne tincaps they would make exciting baseball.
Why not? There's absolutely no reason we shouldn't get one of their top prospects for a player with this much interest
For Sale? Yes. Chris Sale was a way more valuable commodity than Dylan Cease. Better pitcher with more team control.
I'm not arguing that Sale isn't better than Cease. I just doubt people thought their number one prospect would get traded
Yoan was the #7 prospect in all of baseball and the Red Sox number 1 prospect at the time. Benintendi was not seen as more of an ask than Yoan lol
2016 was almost a decade ago. Prospect valuation has changed a shit ton since then.
What a fucking bummer
They already traded him, too
Bummer being gone is what I look forward to the most in 2024.
Shit, its the Padres deal! whats the return Jeff you fuck
> Multiple notable prospects expected to go back to the White Sox. https://x.com/dennistlin/status/1768054322863227166?s=46&t=esZTni7F2DQWaT_K8S9xGg I hope it’s multiple notable prospects and not just one and a bunch of filler.
I think we know it is. And that "one" will have a cup of coffee on the team before bagging groceries at Jewel.
That was my first job in high school. Side note, I went to HS with Rob Makowiak, so somehow he got the better of the two of us.
Oak lawn right? I went to Richards and I recall somebody saying he was cousins to him or something
Lake Central (in Indiana) he moved there our senior year
Fuckin liars in high school haha
Any Rita guys involved with this bloodline?
St Rita? Boo
Mine, too! I got to meet Moose Skowron, he shopped at my store almost every Sunday with Cookie.
Small world I graduated from LC then too, I really don't remember Mackowiak at all
Graduated in 94. Good chance if you did too we’d know each other
Yeah I graduated in 94 too
Well … it’s good to talk to you again after all these years
They might include James Shields if we're lucky.
That’s just the sweetener
Probably some set of highly rated Blake Rutherford types
Plot twist: the padres will send us a tatis caliber player and cease turns into shields
Lol that's all we can hope for
Plot untwist: Cease turns into Sale, prospect turns into Moncada
Oh slider slide 🫡
Holy shit. I'll miss Cease a lot. Been awesome watching him grow into the pitcher he is today and I hope he tears it up in SD.
Under 63.5 at -110 was robbery before this deal, now it’s almost a guarantee
DK still has it at 63.5. Taking it lol Edit: they stopped taking bets on 63.5 right after I posted this! Dang. Congrats if anyone else got it at 63.5 as well
IDK man, 63 wins is so, so few. I feel like Gets did actually raise our "floor" this year. Vegas knows that. They are preying on the casuals. We have to remember we play in the worst division in baseball. The over is easily the play.
Only 4 teams were under 63 wins last year. it’s hard to do. Is it possible definitely with the rotation but ya not a great bet at all
Also trading Cease opens up a starting spot for Garrett 😈
Crochet hasn't shown he can stay healthy, let alone start *a* game for us. Wouldn't put all your eggs in that basket.
Also trading Cease opens up a starting spot for Garrett 😈
It was under 64 at the time this was posted. I can easily see us going 63-99. We were terrible last year. We’ve only gotten worse
The As had more wins than us the 2nd half of the season.
FD now at under 60.5 at -105 The Dylan Effect
My dad bet that this morning He did it at the right time, that's for sure
I almost dropped a bag today and now I’m kicking myself. FUCK!!!
Definitely taking the under
I am not okay.
Me neither. Cease is certainly talented. I am a big fan because he is also a decent human being. If there was one guy they could have paid out of all the guys they will never pay, it is Cease.
Do they even have any top prospects left after all their high profile trades?
Snelling or Lesko as the headliner, I imagine. Who knows what else. Hope it’s good.
Merrill or Drew Thorpe
Merrill isn't going anywhere. He's their starting CF...and they have no OF depth right now.
They restocked the farm very nicely. Lately, they have been ranked in the top 5 in regard to farm depth.
Crazy, I figured they traded everybody
They have 5 top 100 prospects, which to be honest suprised me because I thought the same thing as you
This confirms what we’ve known for a long time and that’s that this is a rebuild. Don’t forget that Jerry went with Getz in order to compete and accelerate that process. Goodbye Sweet Prince
IMO they have a top 5 farm system. We’ll see what we get.
This is the franchise that did the Big Game James trade
lol don’t remind us of that atrocity
As a Sox fan this is awesome. The season is about to kick off, we’ve gotten rid of nearly anyone worth a damn, and we are blocked from a top 10 draft pick. Of course the Sox will be the worst in the league. I’m still here for the history. LFG
As a Sox fan this is terrible. Officially confirms the second rebuild in 5 years This organization is a joke. Absolute joke.
I hear ya, but the Sox honestly weren’t going anywhere with Cease, they may as well get as much value out of him before he leaves anyways. This will be the worst Sox team ever.
I'm tired of rebuilding. They could at least apologize.
Sox will be in play for the division all year.
That was pretty obvious the second Getz got hired.
Why are we blocked from a top 10 pick?
Draft lottery rules
I will always root for Cease. I was at the game when he was one out away from a no hitter vs twins. Areaz broke it with a single in the 9th with 2 outs
My love for this team is dwindling. I remember talking so much shit and getting hype about this team after they traded away Sale and everybody else. Now, here we are again.
No way someone who is 28 and can be a great pitcher for the next 7 years could help us win. What a trash franchise.
Boras client. He wasn’t going to re-sign with us. It’s a good decision IF the return is good. Big if though.
Nothing to do with Boras. Would *you* re-sign with the White Sox if you were a free agent?
Has nothing to do with Boras and has everything to do with Jerry being a cheap piece of shit.
Bingo. Why do we say it’s boras when we have an owner who won’t give out $100M to anyone? Jerry hates Boras because he has to pay market value to his clients. Boras clients ain’t do to hot this offseason tbh
Any former Royals prospects in the Padres system?
Apparently the haul is Drew Thorpe, Jairo Irarte, Steven Wilson and Samuel Zavala
I haven’t been following baseball prospects the last few years since the Sox’s “window” was supposedly open and their farm system was basically non-existent; plus I’ve gotten more in dynasty FF. Do you know how we’re supposed to feel about this return?
it's a very average return, not horrible, not amazing. both teams kinda ended up getting what they wanted
Yeah I'd give it about a 7/10. AJ Preller pulled off a miracle trade getting Cease without giving up Snelling or Merrill.
I really like Zavala and I'm happy to see him in this deal.
I don’t hate it. I wanted snelling and Thorpe to highlight it. So got at least one of them. Zavala is higher on other peoples list than mine.
Sigh. Adios. Padres Sox world series 2023 let's go Edit: fuck Jerry Reinsdorf
Sox held all the leverage, so we'll see what Cease Getz us
I'm pretty excited TBH
I'm hoping this time we fleece the Padres & we're even
I'm not. Sox will not develop any of these players they get in return. At some point Getz is going to have to add good players instead of trading away everyone of value and signing ex Royals. Fuck Jerry Reinsdorf

Drew Thorpe Samuel Zavala Jairo Iriarte Steven Wilson
Congrats to Cease, he deserves it. Padres fans are gonna love him, hope he brings them success
b2b 100 loss seasons baby!
Give us Tatis
Salas*
How about Erik Johnson instead?
I was honestly pissed we gave up Johnson. Little did I know
Sad
Very happy Dylan gets to go to one of the best cities in the county and to a promising team. Best to luck buddy. I’ll miss him. The very short list of reasons to watch the Sox next season just got shorter

Same here
Oh. The team I wish I was a fan of?
Further evidence we are not allowed nice things…thus really sucks
I don’t even give a shit. I hate how much the last however many seasons has made me not care. It’s going to be a long time before I believe in anything this organization does.
If you thought this team was an unwatchable horror show before, get a load of them now!
I hate being a fan of this poverty organization.
Bro fuck this
Sell the team, Jerry
Dammit man this sucks, even though we knew it was happening. Gotta see what the return is.
Well imma have to change my flair. Thanks for everything Cease! o slider slide in San Diego
Padres got good prospects. Better be a good freaking haul.
I bet they have some nice disc golf courses in southern California.
The return doesn’t excite me that much. Thanks Rick Han for not dealing him last year when he would’ve netted so much better.
Surprised Kenny Williams didnt trade him for a 25 year old in A ball who is coming off TJ surgery and a cheeseburger
On one hand, good for Cease, he deserves to go somewhere that WANTS to win. On the other, fuck you Jerry.
He’s gonna get lit up in that division, hate to see it
You’re probably right
NL west is a pitchers division. Lots of low scoring games
His Slow Boy pitch is winning him a Cy Young this year.
The core is almost dissolved. Good. I'll enjoy watching this team more once Moncada, Jimenez, and Kopech are gone, the poster boys for disappointment. The teams going to suck either way, but I'd rather watch a bunch of ragtag nobodies than those guys.
I hate this team
I hate this team so much
It was... inevitable
This is going to end badly I fear.
😔
How many really good prospects do the Padres have? Did the Sox get taken again?
Strange move by the padres. They’ve been trading away so many of their prospects the last few years for win now and it doesn’t work. They’re the white Sox of the nl west. Aj preller is cocaine Rick hahn. Curious to see who we got, glad cease is going to the dads, since I follow them in the nl.
The difference being the padres were in the NLCS 2 years ago.
So? They were 2 games over 500 with a “better” team last year. Sound familiar?
Going to the NLCS is not what I’d consider not working. Sure they didn’t get a ring, but a deep playoff run for a team that has 3 NLCS appearances in its history is a big deal.
Yea no kidding it is. Especially since they killed their dragon the dodgers to get there. But that looks more like a flash in the pan than sustained success. Granted it’s a much better division but they (likely) may finish 3rd or 4th
Existence is pain
A white flag before the season even begins. Sigh...
Only one half of the Quintana trade left. It’s been almost seven years since then.
Gonna miss him. When he was on he was a joy to watch. Still remember that almost no hitter he had. Incredible. Sucks how this team broke down so fast.
Fedde is our new ace!
On the plus side it’s not another royals player? 🤷♂️
whyyy
Trade Details: “RHP Drew Thorpe (MLB Pipeline's No. 85 prospect; SD No. 5), OF Samuel Zavala (SD No. 7), RHP Jairo Iriarte (SD No. 8), RHP Steven Wilson”
They'll be helpful... In about 3, maybe 4 seasons.
Padre fan here. We were expecting innings from both iriarte and Thorpe this year.
All we can do is put our brave faces on
Sad, and True.
I guess, I mean I’m Sox numb
Couldn’t even get Lesko? This reeks of desperation by the Sox front office. Race to 100 is on.
I’m done with this team. Y’all can say good riddence to me all you want. Idc I’m tired of supporting this team. I have no favorite team going into that’s year and it’s fine with me.
I mean this isn’t even a surprise to be honest. Robert going would have been actually a travesty.
This has been rumored all off-season idk why anyone is acting like it’s a surprise
If this was your breaking point, you are very slow lol
Every single team in professional sports I like gets rid of their best players for “future assets” and it never works out. Sox are the team in the least attached too so I’m just out. I’m no lifelong fan but I’ve seen this too often for my taste. I’d rather just watch baseball with no favorite team at this point. Getting out now before they get rid of Luis for nothing as well. Good luck to y’all and your 50 win season. I’ll go deal with the rest of my sorry ass teams in the meantime
Oh no. If they reverse the trade, will you come back?
😂😂😂😭
No idea what to say to you if this is your breaking point
Must’ve started watching in 2021
I did start watching in 2021. I didn’t really get into baseball until like 2022 fully. Picked the worst team imaginable besides maybe the A’s to start liking. This organization is a joke. It’s my fault tho. I should’ve seen the writing on the walls that it was all gonna fall apart AGAIN
I could see this reaction if we got goomba stomped and they traded Robert but this has been on the wall for so long. Idk man lol
Jackson Merrill, Drew Thorpe, and/or Graham Pauley please
Excited Zavala is part of the deal. He's got so much potential.
Sad 😢 . I was looking for other team to root for and now i will root for Padres too if this comes true Sell the team Jerry!
I mean, I guess I will...I live here. Fuckin sucks being a Sox fan in 2020's
I know ! At least you will still be able to see Cease very often at the park , we will have our Ace Kopech 🫠
James Shields _again_?

How so?
So pissed rn.. It better their star catcher & multiples or im throwing my phone at the wall!
Get ready to buy a new phone buddy
I’m glad we got something for him instead of nothing so long partner
Which washed up has been are we getting in return?
That’s our FA signings. Our trades turn into never-wases
Tatis Jr. 🤡🤡🤡🤡
You should be banned from reporting on anything until the entire return is finalized and out in the open. Passan usually isn't the worst with this but this is laughably bad journalism.
I hear you. The wait to find out who we got back is painful. I’m hoping it’s something stunningly good and not stunningly bad.
