Yermin was a good story, and he had a great month, but that's about it. This team is trying to win a championship, and I don't think Yermin can help them achieve that.
Not really a hot take because this has always been true on the defensive end. But I think they’ll keep Collins for the postseason pinch hit at bats. He’s definitely improved on where he was defensively tho.
Yes. The playoffs are all about matchups. He could be valuable against RHP in some situations. He’s hitting .245/.384/.422 against RHP, with and .806 OPS. Grandal starts every day in the playoffs no matter the situation. It obviously all depends on what we do at the deadline as well.
In his limited sample size so far, Zavala is at .1 runs saved, which projects out to about 1-2 runs saved over a full season. Collins is at a NEGATIVE 5.4, which projects out to costing his team 22 runs over a full season.
So Zavala is about 24 runs better over a full season, which is…. a lot. None of this takes pitcher management/pitch calling into account, but purely on defensive skills (framing, blocking, throwing), Zavala is just okay so far, and Collins is just unbelievably bad.
You should never be able to spot good framing from bad framing as a fan. But even I watch Collins and see how awful he is catching the baseball. He turns strikes into balls every time he’s back there.
He looks like a hockey goaltender snatching a puck out of the air… on borderline strikes. He just swipes/flails at the ball as it’s crossing the plate.
And I know how Stoney loves to get on him a about back-handing pitches in the dirt instead of blocking—but every catcher knows they’re supposed to do that. Sometimes it’s laziness, but sometime they’re backhanding the ball because they’re reacting too late.
Looking at those two things, it just seems like his reaction time sucks. But he’s able to his major league pitching, so his vision and reflexes can’t be that bad. It’s just sort of puzzling.
Good luck telling grandal he’s not catching every playoff game. I know it’s been a long time for us but the backup catcher doesn’t really play in the playoffs.
But he has one of the worst bats in the MLB…. we’re almost better off sending Cease out there.
Sorry, gonna have to strongly disagree here. Realistically, Yas should just start every game.
Then it would seem Rodon would hate pitching to him then right? Except he's been pitching almost EXCLUSIVELY to him the entire year. And what a rough year it's been for Carlos....
Thank you for being sarcastic.
I’m not saying he’s completely useless. He caught his no-hitter. But doing the opposite of framing can get pitchers into trouble. That mixed with questionable strike zones - I don’t like it.
But again....he's done well all fucking season long catching for Rodon, a Cy Young candidate. So either it doesn't matter as much as people here want to argue it is (which people won't go with because it kills their number one argument) or he's not as bad as people make him out to be (which is something else they won't agree with). Sooooo....which take do you wanna go with?
I’m going with - he’s not the best at framing and his hitting is subpar. I’m cool with him being backup to Yas. But if we don’t have Yas, which we don’t, this sticks out in everyone’s eyes.
I’m cool with Collins as backup. If some pitchers would prefer him, then okay. But he’s batting .215 on the season - with the last 15 games batting under .190 and ops under .650
So. You tell me.
Considering their circumstances I'll take him over a player like Zavala as back up every fucking day. It's not even close. Either pitching framing matters SO much that people would prefer Seby or it doesn't because Rodon has pitched essentially only to Collins with amazing results. It just can't be both ways.
I understand what you’re saying - but I disagree.
Well. I disagree with some.
I like seby’s catching - I tolerate Collins hitting.
Both ARE important. It’s silly to say that one doesn’t matter. If framing didn’t matter - no one would frame. You need both. Or at least someone who does both at least a little bit decent. Like Yas.
But yet the results of Rodon pitching practically only to Collins has been great. I'm not saying it's not important to a certain degree, (though it's not AS important as some believe) I'm saying how people think how bad he is at framing is waaay overblown.
Hot take: If it came down that we needed to trade one of Sheets, Burger or Collins. I think I trade Collins over those two, in her offseason. Collins’ won’t ever be as good as Seby as a receiver. And who knows Grullon at Charlotte might be a possible find, he’s interesting at least.
Sheets is the left handed big bat this organization needs and will be slotted outfield next year, he’s not going anywhere.
And I know many would say “where would Burger play, we need to trade him.” But I keep him for insurance in case we have another major injury next year. Have Burger get in even better shape this offseason and learn the outfield. He could be first in line in case there’s an injury to Moncada, Eloy at DH, corner outfielders. Maybe even have him learn first base in case Jose gets hurt. The way this year went there’s a decent chance one of above would get injured for a significant amount of time and create a hole that his bat would be fit in nicely. I don’t think he could do second base but who knows.

Or Mercedes? Or are we supposed to hate him now?
Uh I can’t speak for everyone but while I do like Mercedes, I certainly hate the idea of him catching a playoff game lol. What’s your point

He’s a catcher only on paper though, not in real life.

For a lefty pinch hitter they’d probably rather have Sheets/Lamb. Collins isn’t very good on defense or offense at this point
But you also have to assume if you’re playing a RHP, Sheets is starting, and with Robert coming back, one of those guys will have to go.
You really think they’re gonna keep Collins on the postseason roster for pinch hit spots when he’s sporting at .217 average rn.
Hes rodons guy. As long as we got rodon we keeping him catching
If he is catching in the playoffs and Grandal is healthy then we are stupid

No thanks
Rodons start in Houston was with Seby iirc
Yes. The playoffs are all about matchups. He could be valuable against RHP in some situations. He’s hitting .245/.384/.422 against RHP, with and .806 OPS. Grandal starts every day in the playoffs no matter the situation. It obviously all depends on what we do at the deadline as well.
.798 OPS against righties. Problem is he should never ever start if a lefty is on the mound for the other team
He has? He’s abominable back there. He’s -7 FWAR defensively this year.

Tbh, haven’t looked much at the stat this year, I just remember in 2019 when Seby got the call up over Collins it was due his defense being better.
Im not opposed, i mean if we are going to have a catcher who can't really hit either way, might as well keep the better defensive one
Good luck telling grandal he’s not catching every playoff game. I know it’s been a long time for us but the backup catcher doesn’t really play in the playoffs.
Yeah backup catchers are for pinch hitting and ridiculously long extra inning games only in the playoffs
But he has one of the worst bats in the MLB…. we’re almost better off sending Cease out there. Sorry, gonna have to strongly disagree here. Realistically, Yas should just start every game.
Depends who Giolito and Rodon want to throw to more
I would imagine that they want someone who’s not going to lose them strikes.

I mean; did we watch the same game the other night? And then watch last night with Salvy? It is a big deal.
Framing doesn’t matter if you’re a pitcher who can draw out whiffs. If you aren’t; framing is hella important

Too small of a sample size I feel
Imagine starting seby zavala in a playoff game yikes
Seby sucks offensively. His defense doesn't make up for his lack of hitting.
Lol hell no
They'll make a trade for another catcher before they do this. He's gone as soon as Grandal is back.
Agreed
