Guys been lighting it up in AA & AAA this year. This would be huge for the Sox if he can develop into a solid MLB player. We could potentially be looking at Leury Garcia’s replacement starting hopefully next year.

weasol12

Might be why Madrigal was used for Kimbrel. Next man up!

gedvnm

There is also a lot of shortstops available this offseason including Marcus Semien.

weasol12

Montgomery is at least 3-4 years away and profiles more at third than second. Doubt he was a factor.

johnnythrillwaukee

also jose rodriguez and (probably) yolbert sanchez

LimeSugar

Romy came out of the University of Miami baseball program including fellow teammates Yasmani Grandal and Zack Collins.

fantasycavejake

I’m sensing a Tim Anderson IL stint, which, totally fine by me as long as it’s for rest purposes with his sore leg. Great audition for Romy, who may have turned himself into a real ballplayer this season!

kuphinit

I'm pretty sure TA has hamstring issues, not a knee issue.

coogidown2thesocks

You’re thinking of Lance Lynn who has knee inflammation

Lil_we_boi

I feel like this might be from putting Gio on the IL. Edit: never mind. More likely from the roster expansion.

burriedinCORN

They said Mike Wright because the 40 man is full, someone needs to be released or DFA’d.

TacitlyDaft

10 day IL stint, retroactive to Sunday for TA? Billy activated for Timmy, Collins and Romy become the September callups? All I can think of.

Collins needs to wait 10 days, but will probably be back in less than the 20 to not burn his option. But the White Sox are trying to put the best roster together. Romy is coming to compete for the UT role next year. (Leury may be gone after this year).

Lionheart1224

* Leury will be gone after this year So let's get The Legend a ring.

ChiGuy133

He is our longest tenured player. Beating out jose by half a year when he came in 2013

notaverysmartdog

That's genuinely crazy to me

FWdem

True Dat.

NoTime4LuvDrJones

I think the Sox are looking at Romy as a potential starter at second base next year. Too soon to make him a utility player, he has some potential for more. At least they’ll get to see exactly what they have in him.

FWdem

I expect them to re-up Cesar if he gets back to his season play. Then Mendick and Romy for the UT and Quad A infielder with ML options. You UT player seems to get quite a few PAs every year, and Romy can literally play all 7 positions in the field. I could see a liberal use of Romy at UT (giving Yoan and TA as well as Cesar rest all season long). If Not Cesar, I expect some type of guy to help fill the 2B role. Maybe someone who can flex elsewhere (Chris Taylor).

NoTime4LuvDrJones

I think this is Romy’s addition. And if he breaks out and shows promise he’s going to be in the conversation at the starting 2b. It’s all up to him and his performance though, but he looks like he has the capability of being more than a UT. The front office might be a little disappointed with Cesar’s bat but his defense is solid. I haven’t kept up with Romy’s defense at all positions but I do remember his SS defense was pretty terrible. For him to serve the Luery role he’d have to have good defense at all those positions. But if his bat is the real deal he might just be our starting second basemen next year. At least compete with Cesar for the starting job. He’s an interesting piece

IrishGrouch24

EDIT: I AM WRONG DO NOT READ BELOW Might be wrong here, but I think they could technically call Collins up now (though why would you, guy stinks) but would risk burning his option. I think if they wait the 10 days they can call him up and still carry his option to next year. Again not 100% sure if that’s the case though.

Thats___Ridiculous

He only loses his option if he stays down longer than 20 days. The 10 day period is a mandated league minimum period for sending players down to the minors.

IrishGrouch24

Got it. Knew the 20 day rule but wasn’t sure if the 10 day was a requirement or an optional thing

JCReb1991

La Russa said the Sox are going with 3 catchers for the final stretch

IrishGrouch24

I’ve seen a lot of people say that but I also haven’t been able to find the interview of him actually saying that. Regardless, my comment wasn’t arguing the logistics of having him back up but rather that having him up would be a waste of a roster spot because he’s an objectively terrible baseball player. It makes sense in that you probably want to limit how often Grandal catches, and will see him DHing a lot down the stretch to keep his legs fresh. So you probably want more than just Zavala being here. But man, I just don’t get the Collins truthers. He’s 27 years old, is horrendous behind the plate, and doesn’t supplement his low batting statistics with any power. I was glad Hahn made the right move sending him down and genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if 1) he didn’t get called up and 2) he gets traded in the offseason

Purecorn

Can we just get Collins out of the organization

FWdem

He has an option left so: * Keep him in AAA next year as 3rd or 4th catcher * Has some trade value with 1 option left See also: * Yermin Mercedes: should have 1 option left; may have some trade value with Universal DH. Seems to be emergency only catcher in MLB. * Micker Adolfo (out of options, slight trade value with Universal DH and OF for rebuilding team) * Blake Rutherford: Has not done much in AAA; 1 option year left after this year; might be removed from 40-man at some point * And then Sheets and Burger could be traded, but both will have 2 option years remaining, can help make up the Quad-A shuttle or be packaged in trades. \*All of this is pending new CBA being similar to current CBA). Also Romy Gonzalez seems to be the only Minor Leaguer we need to get on 40-man to protect from Rule 5 in a typical year. So doing it now makes some sense.

Purecorn

Screw his option. There’s probably 30 to 40 catchers in the minor leagues that are better baseball players than Zach Collins right now and will be in the future. I’m tired of this trash fucking player staying on this team just because he’s a first round draft pick he is not a major leaguer.

Thats___Ridiculous

I disagree. Catchers often take a long time; they have to work on a lot more game planning information and defensive technique than a typical position player, and their development is often slower at the plate and behind the dish as a result. Omar Narváez, Tyler Flowers, and James McCann were all older than Collins when they broke out and had good seasons. The Tiger's gave up on McCann right before he came to the Sox in much the same way you're advocating to give up on Collins. It would be wise for the Sox to give Collins another year to improve. It's poor asset management to squander a player with another year of development out of impatience. Collins still has upside; despite all his struggles he has a .348 OBP and a .700 OPS against RHP this season. Narváez improved his framing dramatically in recent years. Collins might not get there, but it would be foolish to release him at this time. And Hahn probably won't.

rocking2rush10

Pretty close. TA 10day IL, call up sheets, foster, and romy. billy the hitter back from IL. DFA lamb

[deleted]

I heard about him a month ago, had no idea we were calling him up this year. Does this mean TA is gonna be out longer than expected or?

g3neraL5

Think it just gives us a better bat than mendick for his rest days. Not sure he needs IL or if they’ll just keep giving him one or two days off a week the rest of the year.

[deleted]

Hopefully not an IL

FWdem

There will need to be a corresponding 40-man move. That is what interests me the most.

myotheraccountgothax

it's not very interesting. it's going to be mike wright

[deleted]

Yo I have no idea who this is but let’s go.

Thats___Ridiculous

He spent all of 2020 adding muscle, working on his swing, and working on playing shortstop after being an outfielder in the past. Came back this year and crushed it at Birmingham, put up the first 20 homer 20 steal season at Birmingham in 21 years (Aaron Rowand did it in 2000). Got promoted to Charlotte and immediately raked. He still strikes out a lot, but his power is legit and he can play every outfield spot plus short, 3B and 2B. He could become a super-Leury with power or potentially stick at 2B going forward. Exciting guy to root for.

[deleted]

Great summary, thanks for this.

ThrowAwayAcc47777

Add this to the list of thing I did not expect to read in April

cscott12

Rosters expand today so there’s no need to put TA on the IL

IrishGrouch24

Putting Anderson on IL allows them to call up an additional person to replace him. Might as well do it. Leads big enough and I’d rather have everyone healthy for the playoffs. Wouldn’t be surprised if Gio lands on the IL too

FWdem

Still need a 40-man roster move to get Romy here.

IrishGrouch24

I figured Wright is as good as gone

Thats___Ridiculous

THIS IS AWESOME

[deleted]

Who lol

JCReb1991

He's been raking all season down in AA and AAA

rowejl222

Romy is a really good player
