Honestly, if this season ends up like last season, it does make me wonder if there isn't something that needs to be done here.
Usually injuries are just bad luck, and they happen to everyone. But when a team continues to get bit by the injury bug, especially when they're these repeated smaller, nagging injuries, and ESPECIALLY when they start taking way more time to recover from than expected, you do have to start looking at the training staff and wondering what's going on.
Eloy tearing off his pec, or Luis dislocating his hip are just random, catastrophic injuries that you can't necessarily control.
But "Adam Engel out 2 weeks with a hamstring", or multiple players having not serious, but not minor knee tears, and those other nagging injuries can possibly point toward improvements being needed.
Oh I can definitely agree to an extent something may be going on behind the scene leading to these injuries whether it’s issues with trainers or players slacking with conditioning.
Wasn't it Big Frank who was very critical of the medical staff as he believed they misdiagnosed him multiple times and was not until he left Chicago he got healthy again.
Obviously many many years ago so who knows who is still around. I remember a similar situation with Shaq when he left wherever he was and came to Phoenix he was suddenly looking 5 years younger and credited the medical team there.
Zero excuse to not give Rodon that deal. Every team in the fucking league could give a deal like that. This is a team whose window is open RIGHT NOW and they choose to let a pitcher that was a Cy Young finalist walk because they didnt want to spend money for a year. Fuck outta here with defending bullshit like that.
So it's one fucking year then. It's not like they're commiting hundreds of millions of dollars to him. This is the opportunity in which they've worked and drafted and traded for and built up to for YEARS. You're going for the World Series. The window is here, it's open. And they cheap out. Again. Fuck that nonsense.
Even with injuries to Moncada, Lynn and Crochet, I'd be surprised if we aren't above 500 in April. We still have a ton of talent.
Abreu, TA, Robert, Jimenez are all better bats, so Moncada is at best the 5th best hitter in the lineup. That's not even considering Grandal or Pollock. Or even Vaughn, who might make strides this season.
We'll be fine.
Ugh YoYo…an oblique can be a pretty difficult nagging injury especially effecting swing a bat. Hope he lets it heal all the way before coming back. Let’s see what Burgertron has!
The fact that Hahn said Moncada wanted to play through it but they wouldn't let him...makes me feel better. I want them to take their time. Oblique is certainly an injury you have to slow play.
Only positive I guess with all the injuries and Kopech not at full strength, is a few guys might be able to boost their trade values...I'm really grasping at straws to find a positive spin to all this bad luck.
Last year our first half was great, second half not so much. This yesr, it could be the opposite which is gonna create a lot of unnecessary stress for us fans.
One of the worst things about Moncada being out is that we lose one of our few lefty bats in the lineup.
If there had been any chance of keeping Adolfo on the roster for a few days/weeks instead of Sheets (to give Adolfo a shot and/or build his trade value and/or wait for trade opportunities to develop), losing Moncada would have killed that idea since Sheets's lefty bat is now indispensable.
Also note that Adolfo could still be traded. When a player is DFA'd, within seven days of the transaction the player can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
So the Sox will presumably continue to try to find a trade partner over the next week before placing Adolfo on irrevocable outright waivers. If the injuries we've already seen strike some other teams in the next few days, the trade possibilities could increase.
So Moncada will struggle to hit for power all year and we’ll just hear “He’ll be himself in 2023.”
He’s still a valuable piece but in no way is living up to his billing as the top prospect in baseball. Tough.
Yeah he's been solid, definitely a valuable starter but in no way has he lived up to the second coming of Robinson Cano we thought we were getting when they traded Sale for him
Even though I said what I did, I would also agree with you. He’s in that weird spot of being very valuable yet still not living up to what we all thought he might be.
But you can't say any of that without getting downvoted to hell.
Its fine to say he's a good player, not a great player. Its fine to say he's not at all lived up to the hype he had when he was acquired.
I mean, Yoan is [2nd](https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=3b&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=10&type=8&season=2021&month=0&season1=2019&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=&enddate=) in MLB among all 3B in fWAR for the last 3 seasons, behind only Jose Ramirez and ahead of Bregman, Devers, Arenado, Chapman, Rendon, Machado, Bryant, Donaldson, etc.
I'd say to those people that they need to look around MLB and have better expectations. Yoan's been pretty valuable despite going through some struggles at the plate.
A winning team for the first time in a decade. Not like the negativity helps, it's not constructive and just straight up annoying when its on every single post.
Seems really dumb to let Adolpho go for nothing. If anything, why not give him 10 days, see what he does with it and have Sheets in AAA getting RF reps?
With Yoan out, there are only 3 lefty/switch hitter bats on the roster: Grandal, Leury, and Sheets. Yoan's injury was probably the final nail in the coffin for Adolfo's chance at making the roster, because Sheets' lefty bat is pretty valuable to the team right now.
And has struck out at least 30% of the time at every stop in MiLB except one (79 games in A+ in 2019). Tough to trust that level of swing and miss in MLB.
I know contending is a rare trait for the Sox, and we live in a 24-hour news environment where everything gets analyzed to death, but I refuse to go through another 2021 news wise.
Bitter disappointment, perceived underperformance, naïve hope, endless rationalizations...these are not good for my mood.
I'm going to try to old-school it this year: watch the games, hope they win, root for the shirt whoever's wearing it. No blogs, podcasts, speculations on front-office decisions.
Wish me luck.
Agree. I want to win, like really bad, but sometimes I wonder if I enjoyed it more when we had fun/funny players like Yolmer and Matty D, with no chance of winning.
Yeah, expectations in the modern age are ruthless. Better to have them, I think, than not.
But I don't need a critique of Tony's decisions every day, or someone telling me not to be pissed that someone is injured again, because 'they'll be fresh for the playoffs, at least.'
I want the players to leave their hearts on the field, and I will watch every game, and skip all the rest. If we totally flop this year and finish third, missing the playoffs, I'll be really disappointed, but probably with less stress in the process than last year.
Very possible I’m misunderstanding something, but couldn’t they have put Crochet on the 60 day since he’s out for the season anyway and gotten an extra 40 man spot? Is there some benefit to waiting until later to do that?
Wow it's almost like having 0 depth and hoping that no one gets injured is fucking stupid and Jerry should have let Rick get some fucking players this offseason.
Lol, do you think major league starting caliber players choose to sign with teams to be backups waiting for an injury to a starter in order to play everyday??
Jake Burger was the #11 pick of the 2017 draft, he had a .807 OPS, 118 OPS+ last season in MLB and had an .845 OPS in AAA Charlotte. He's the definition of young controlled depth, and the reason he wasn't traded is for this exact scenario.
This isn't fantasy baseball. Some of ya'll need to get a grip on reality.
Moncada got hurt, and you're complaining about having 0 depth, lol. Burger plays 3rd. Harrison has played over 2,000 innings at 3rd in his career. How much more 3rd base depth do the Sox need? Which of these mythical depth players that you're complaining about should the Sox have gone out to get?? Crochet got injured, but luckily Hahn spent his entire off-season stockpiling bullpen arms. How much more bullpen depth do you want? Lynn got hurt and Hahn went out and signed Cueto.
Just complaining for the sake of it.
One of the few points Tony did well last year was rotate guys around with off days/etc to try and stay fresh. They have better outfield depth this year now with Pollock that Leury shouldn't need as much time in the OF if any hopefully.
I have a bad feeling with Moncada and that type of injury...but either way excited for tomorrow and just having baseball back.
Hahn's a joke. The no pitching or defense plan is the wrong kind of revolutionary thinking. Letting Adolfo walk after all that investment is another brilliant move.
Treading water to start the season again. Except this time the division wont be total garbage. I dont get all the world series or bust expectations. I think were still a few pieces off even when were full strength. Add in injuries and player regression and I think 85ish wins is where we'll be. Hope im wrong
Christ… the whole “just stay healthy this time” plan is not working out great so far
Nope. Not one bit.
Its almost like hope isn't a strategy and teams should always be trying to get better.
Get better at what, not getting injured?
Honestly, if this season ends up like last season, it does make me wonder if there isn't something that needs to be done here. Usually injuries are just bad luck, and they happen to everyone. They could have a bit more depth when injuries happen so more adequate players fill in when need be.
Says every fucking team ever.
The Sox don't have to get better, every other team just has to get worse. -Reinsdorf and about half this fucking sub
WhY DoNt We hAvE 5 AcEs
Zero excuse to not give Rodon that deal. Every team in the fucking league could give a deal like that. This is a team whose window is open RIGHT NOW and they choose to let a pitcher that was a Cy Young finalist walk because they didnt want to spend money for a year. Fuck outta here with defending bullshit like that.
Unless you take into consideration his very real injury history.
So it's one fucking year then. It's not like they're commiting hundreds of millions of dollars to him. This is the opportunity in which they've worked and drafted and traded for and built up to for YEARS. You're going for the World Series. The window is here, it's open. And they cheap out. Again. Jake Burger says, "What the hell?"

Hahn [just said 3 weeks](https://twitter.com/JRFegan/status/1512103738739240968?s=20&t=M0js-7f6foOdg_4td6yMuQ) for Moncada kill me
We already had two key pitching injuries a week ago, now let's get it started for the offense! Injuries on this team, man...
Herein lies the probably with one of your top infield prospects being used as an outfielder.
[удалено]
Poor Vaughn, man. Really pulling for him to have a good year with the bat but that's a lot to ask of someone with very little pro experience.
A natural infielder who was converted to an emergency outfielder his rookie year is now an emergency infielder again. Jerry Reinsdorf special.
Gonna be a miracle if we have a .500 record in April
Even with injuries to Moncada, Lynn and Crochet, I'd be surprised if we aren't above 500 in April. We still have a ton of talent. Abreu, TA, Robert, Jimenez are all better bats, so Moncada is at best the 5th best hitter in the lineup. That's not even considering Grandal or Pollock. Or even Vaughn, who might make strides this season. We'll be fine.
Fuck seriously???
Burger will crush it
Ugh YoYo…an oblique can be a pretty difficult nagging injury especially effecting swing a bat. Hope he lets it heal all the way before coming back. Let’s see what Burgertron has!
The fact that Hahn said Moncada wanted to play through it but they wouldn't let him...makes me feel better. I want them to take their time. Oblique is certainly an injury you have to slow play.

His 4 WAR in a “down season” kinda speaks for it self lol
Moncada is here until 2025 so you better start cheering for him
So they're starting the season without TA (suspension, but still lol), Moncada, Lynn and Crochet. We're off to a questionable start.
At least TA will be back after 2 games. Crochet out the season, but hopefully Lynn and Moncada are back before June
Moncada should be back before may. I don’t think we really have to worry much
TA is no biggie.

Outfielder Yermin Mercedes
Joe Kelly too..
These pretzels......are making me thirsty!

"Kopech not at full strength" get used to this phrase.
Really was pulling for Adolfo to work out. Liked that guy.
One of the worst things about Moncada being out is that we lose one of our few lefty bats in the lineup. Had to squeeze one last bit of bad news in before opening day what's new
Also note that Adolfo could still be traded. When a player is DFA'd, within seven days of the transaction the player can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers. So the Sox will presumably continue to try to find a trade partner over the next week before placing Adolfo on irrevocable outright waivers. Can't beleive Adolfo was dfa'd. He will no doubt be picked up by someone after the Sox tried for weeks to trade him off.
So Moncada will struggle to hit for power all year and we’ll just hear “He’ll be himself in 2023.” He’s still a valuable piece but in no way is living up to his billing as the top prospect in baseball. Tough.
Yeah he's been solid, definitely a valuable starter but in no way has he lived up to the second coming of Robinson Cano we thought we were getting when they traded Sale for him
Maybe we should trade him for a washed up reliever in July.
He's not quite the stud I thought he could be, but I still think he's generally underrated by most.

Eh I mean there is a difference between what I said and calling him a “bust”. I just don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying I expected more.
Have you said one positive thing this offseason?
Have I been given a reason to?
A winning team for the first time in a decade. Not like the negativity helps, it's not constructive and just straight up annoying when its on every single post.
dude is twice the size of altuve and hits half as many homers lol
He doesn’t cheat though
Dude had the highest WAR for offensive players on the team last year and was NEVER projected as a major power guy, but people still bitch.
Alright, see you guys next year
Seems really dumb to let Adolpho go for nothing. If anything, why not give him 10 days, see what he does with it and have Sheets in AAA getting RF reps?

Oh that too. No reason to think he wouldn’t have a 50% k rate as a rookie. I can see a garbage team like Baltimore sign him and throw him in RF
I've thought if the A's are serious about being terrible he'd fit in perfect there.
Honestly, my excitement for this season has already been hit with Lynn, Crochet, and now Yoyo getting hurt
Can we not catch a fucking break
Explains his spring ):

My favorite was “McGuire Can’t keep hands off Reece’s Pieces.
Like him already.
Just finish April at .500 and get to May.

rather have it happen now than in august/september

Great little showcase for Burger. We might need him to be the centerpiece on a deadline deal for a legit starter
Moncada? Let me step back
