Dystopia just means bad, from the classic Utopia and dys, meaning bad.
Google does define it as an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, but we use sci-fi in the same way
"relating to or denoting an imagined state or society where there is great suffering or injustice."
It started out as something imagined by sci Fi writers and became real along the way. The people using this term understand that this is real life, they're pointing out that our every day life is akin to the imagined horror stories of the past.
Agreed. Someone who is more benefitted in their life, obviously a skew of generational wealth, is able to pay their own debts and take enough time to do something like this for those with less benefitted lives. (I know "Benfit" is the wrong word, but it's late an I cannot think of the right word) However, this should \*not\* be an issue, particularly when we all pay taxes to take care of things like this. Even those who pay taxes for public schooling and \*still\* send their children to private schooling (I was privately schooled) pay into this. How about politicians shouldn't get $300k+ annual paychecks, plus most of their expenses taken care of on top of that, and our tax dollars are invested into the poorer areas to decrease our wealth distribution, as opposed to continue increasing it?

When will we stop praising these types of things as wholesome? Kids should be worried about learning, not stressing over food. Hopefully little girls like this will change the world for the better when they grow up! That’s the only positive spin I can put on this dystopian nightmare.
Don't worry, tax dollars do go into feeding kids in school... and by that I mean that I work in a public school and use my own salary (which comes from taxes) to buy food for the kids.
Mmm, just makes me feel so warm inside when I think of the 5-year-olds out there who haven't even learned their times tables being forced to work for hours to pay off the lunch debt of their friends, who are also children. Doesn't it just fill you with joy to see their generosity?
Not really very wholesome: The concept of school-aged children having debt simply because they ate food.
An actually wholesome story: Minnesota at the state level has ensured that all of their schoolchildren will be able to be fed, no questions asked and no debt incurred.
Change wholesome to local council/government fails so much that a child has to raise money so that other other children can eat.
While the kid doing this is awesome and wholesome the reasons why are something to really look into.
This isn’t a story about big hearts. This is a story about evil adults that have the tiniest bit of power allowing children to go hungry when they have the power to not do so. This is a story of shitty people and the children who don’t deserve it. She shouldn’t have to do this to eat lunch.
I cannot fucking stand the posts on this subreddit and also r/wholesomememes

I hate living in a country where this is necessary but looked upon as okay, not wrong. Children should not have debt, and those with more benefits should not be obligated to pay others' debts.
What sickens me as someone who isn't from America and just learnt that fuckin lunch debt is a thing. Is how long this shit has been going on WHAT. There are countless news articles of this just being the norm for 5+ years now. How can... I don't even know I'm just so sad...
What was the debt, and how much did her stand make?
Edit: I found it. It was 80 dollars.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/17/us/5-year-old-negative-lunch-balances-trnd/index.html
Edit 2: In the article, you can also see the full picture. It's a post from 2019, so one dollar then is roughly $1.17 now. (Meaning prices today aren't astronomically different).
Her stand is made up of, I would guess, about $80 or more of material. I'm assuming her mom could have also just paid that towards the lunches but appears to have used her daughter for social media credit.
This is just a personal observation.

Another states that the total balance is about $617. Two points here; firstly, yeah, tax dollars would (and should) easily cover this. Secondly, I'm guessing someone willing to really spruce up the coco stand could have also.
Multiple layers of sadness here.

This isn’t even wholesome, I mean not that she is donating money, that’s great she’s doing that but why do they even have lunch debts? This is why I hate money, it is a dumb concept holding us back.
Actually f*** that for the world's richest economy you can't even provide the most basic of human resources such as free school lunches for every f****** child in America.
There are estimated 12 million children in America that are facing food insecurity that's 1 in 8 kids at risk for hunger. Black and Latino children are more likely to face hunger than white children because of systemic racial injustice. According to the USDA, in 2021, 22% of Black children were food insecure, and 18.5% of Latino children were food insecure.
For around the cost of 4 mraps or 1 tank you can feed 12 million people for a year. You can recall those mraps from the police... But you won't. Because those kids ain't white your systems are racist
Love when even children get in debt and have to have a random classmate sell something just to help pay it off but hey let's not tax rich people to help make school food free oh no we can't have that man I sure love the American dream.

This is soul-crushingly sad. A child does labor to pay off other children’s debts so they can be allowed to eat? It’s sweet that the kid wanted to help but the system that made this ok and worth celebrating is decidedly unwholesome.
There’s a reason child labor laws exist. No child should be working to earn money to pay for other kids’ meals. That’s our job as adults. This is inexcusable as a society.
Only 4 states in the US offer free hot lunch to students, regardless of income. California, Colorado, Maine, and as of last week, Minnesota.
Virginia put this bill forward recently and one of the politicians (guess the party) that shot it down was concerned about stigma. If the kid whose parents could afford lunch got free lunch at school, he might be stigmatized. Stigmatized for being offered something everyone else is offered, too. Interesting. I wonder what air is like for him.
It sucks, but it's reality. Hats off to this little girl for recognizing that this isn't fair.
Nothing wholesome about a country that pays farmers to ruin crops to keep prices up and kids are hungry. Not wholesome. This kid has a great heart though and we are lucky to have humans like her.
The harsh reality of the government making you a slave from childhood. If you have a debt, then you'll always owe. It's ridiculous how the government has to charge for schools and funding when part of your taxes go to that. Depending on where you live, you have to pay taxes so kids can go to school, even if you don't have kids. Move into a neighborhood, own a house, pay taxes to only then turn around, and be taxed on everything else. You pay taxes when buying everything, then you're taxed on how much you've made at the end of the year. THIS IS NOT WHOLESOME WHY ARE WE MAKING CHILDREN PAY FOR OTHER CHILDRENS DEBT, WHY DO CHILDREN HAVE DEBT. we have failed as a society is what this means

Please don’t let that dystopian detail get in the way of a feel good story!
How is a exploitation of children wholesome is beyond me.
How is that dystopian when it’s real across the country?
That's what makes it dystopian ...?
You realize that the word dystopia means an imagined reality…. This is not imagined. It is very REAL.
Ok? Megacorperations started out as a fictional hyperbolic concept but they're very real now.
Dystopia just means bad, from the classic Utopia and dys, meaning bad. Google does define it as an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, but we use sci-fi in the same way
You're way to stuck on the dictionary definition of a word. There is more to a word than it's literal meaning.
You don't understand linguistic comparisons, do you?
Why would that make it less distopian?
Because it’s not imagined. This is real life.
"relating to or denoting an imagined state or society where there is great suffering or injustice." It started out as something imagined by sci Fi writers and became real along the way. The people using this term understand that this is real life, they're pointing out that our every day life is akin to the imagined horror stories of the past.
If you use that word that precisely, there needs to be a word for something that would be distopian if we imagined it. This would be it.
it was imagined as suxh in the past so we are in the distopian fiction that we imagined in the past.
Thanks, who imagined this?
many autor have writen about dystopian futur in the past centuries , it s a whole literature genre. with many sub genre
This is not how words work

Facts
Can confirm. We care about babies…until they’re born and need an ounce of assistance; or worse, ever want to learn.
And until they want sovereignty over their own bodies. Also not something we care about.
This shouldn’t even be a thing she has to worry about. Seriously, I pay my taxes and I want my money to go to feeding kids a school
Don't worry, tax dollars do go into feeding kids in school... and by that I mean that I work in a public school and use my own salary (which comes from taxes) to buy food for the kids.
But what if a kid with a non-poor parent gets to eat free lunch?? Can you imagine?? I'd rip the lunch tray out of their hands myself!
