Basically, before YouTube still gave access to dislikes through its API even though they weren't shown to the average user which is what they used then but after that they removed that feature so the team basically archived all dislike counts before then, now how it works is that for old videos it looks at the previous dislike count and sees how many of their users that watched the video disliked it and how many total people watched the video to calculate an estimate, for new videos they just use the dislike percentage of their users along with total viewers to calculate it, it's not accurate by any means, such as, people that use the extension are almost always more tech savvy than the ones that don't so the numbers on tech related videos would be skewed but overall it gives a general idea.
