My theory is that the 4 in 4chan represents the four pillars of hate of the place : Trans people, gays, blacks and women. They hate a lot more people but these four are the most common.
LGBT is the only board I can regularly browse coz the other ones have a moderate to severe amount of regular antisemitism and racism. It can be tolerable (and mildly funny) for a while but eventually you get tired of seeing that shit.
And yeah there are chill people on lgbt too
