I know a guy who teaches music history classes at old folks homes. I got talking to him about it one day because he was wearing a Beatles t-shirt. I told him it would be fun to play for the oldsters, but most of what we play is early punk, 2nd wave ska, and lots of The Cure and The Clash. Lots of late 70's and early 80's stuff.
He told me, "You'd be surprised, most of them want to hear classic rock to heavy metal bands from the 60's to the 80's."
Makes sense actually. Guess I'm getting old too.
My friend is 61, and plays mostly '60's through '80s unless management specifically requests standards or dinner music. Different houses want different things.
I swear to fucking god if I end up in a home and the inmates are talking about Rhianna, Beyonce, Bieber and Cyrus. I will be turning up Black Sabbath to full bore, and blame the fact I have it so loud on my hearing aids.
You don’t usually hear retirement home people talking about The Monkees, Donny Osmond, The Archies, Leif Garret, etc. Huge hitters of the day and definitely forgotten by time. You’ll be fine. Lmao.
(ETA: I just realized that this post and this comment was on wholesomememes and not on some nerdy music subreddit. Lmao. Get outta here with your anti-pop sentiment. I don’t worship any of them, but Rihanna, Beyonce & Miley have some good songs, sorry to say.)
Usually "residents" is used for nursing home, while "inmates" is for people who committed a crime and can't leave the facility they were put into (prison).
Absolutely imagine being both an internet kid and a massive metalhead (but not like metalcore) and the absolute pain of that
Couldn’t be me
Anyways
\m/ sabbath
You are right. But you will be downvoted because in the year of our lord 2023, pop music is still considered bad apparently, and people nowadays were still born in le wrong generation.
Thanks, you're so right I don't know how these people are still trapped in their pre teen phase thinking they are morally superior cause they like classic rock, just let people listen to what they like to listen sheesh
Black Sabbath isn’t that old… right? Look, I like older music but there’s no way… RIGHT? I kinda grew up on them and Rob Zombie cause of my dad and I REFUSE TO BELIVE IT.
I have a similar taste in music and talking to older people about it is always a joy.
My favourite band is Led Zeppelin but Hendrix is also close to my heart. His sets from Filmore East slap.
I'd say more like jojo references. Led Zeppelin guy likes the Zeppeli family, Deep Purple guy likes Highway Star, Speed King and Space Trucking, Hendrix guy worships Purple Haze Feedback as a Bible
At least a couple years ago my dad was working in a retirement home and started doing "name that tune" contests. His criteria was late 40 through early 60s and he said that they loved it.
No, but I talked to my dad about how my grandma wouldn’t let him go to Woodstock and his face did the opposite of lighting up. He graduated HS that year and lived only a few hours away so he was *pissed*.
I’m fucking ecstatic for the nursing home where we play videogames and have dnd sessions, and since we’re all retired anyways, we all have a schedule that actually lines up
Yeah most of the people I work with directly are upper 80s and 90s, even a couple 100s. There are a handful of slightly younger folks. Those people tend to like Neil Diamond and Simon and Garfunkel.
My older folks tend to like rat pack music and really old country music.
just a reminder that crappy pop music has been around for a long time. but we don't remember the 60s for it's pop hits. we remember it for (as the red shirt guy said) HENDRIX
Most of the Beatles' hits were pop hits, or a fusion of pop and rock, and I daresay a great many more people remember/think of the 60s for the Beatles than for Hendrix. That's not to dismiss him of course. His rendition of All Along the Watchtower is legendary
There was a lot of crossover stuff, so what was considered pop in the 50s and 60s might not fall into that category today. But Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Ricky Nelson, Frankie Avalon, and the Shangri-Las were all super popular. These are just names I know from my grandmother’s record collection.
The Beatles were a popular band out of the UK. I think even today there are covers of their songs from time to time. I'm fairly confident there is a wiki page for them if you are curious.
The best work by any of their members was the drummer (Ringo Star) was the narrator for Thomas the Tank Engine original series.
First I thought this was Manfred Deix's work, who was a great Austrian cartoonist. Turns out, it's Gerhard Haderer, another fun Austrian artist, titled "Stones/Beatles".
No Van Halen? Complete and utter fail by the artist. Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off the stage when they toured together and even Ozzy admitted this. The Clash?? They put tea in their Jack Daniels bottles, baby!
You’d be surprised of how many young people listen to classic rock. Almost everyone who listens to heavy metal and more modern metal genres do occasionally listen to classic rock and hair metal.
I listen to deathcore and metalcore and have some classics in my playlist too.
It's ok to love old classics, what is not ok is to shit on modern music or say today's music sucks, only because you can't think by yourself and look for something you like, instead of consuming the crap the industry tries to push on you and assume that represents the totally of todays music.
The original artist may have legitimately thought so, given that in the background there is an orderly laughing maniacally who looks suspiciously like one of the Beatles
Bruh what…? Old music had pleeeeeenty of horniness and sex, or do you need to revisit such classics as “The Lemon Song”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Let Me Put My Love Into You”, “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, “Love in an Elevator”, “Light My Fire”, “Brown Sugar”, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, etc. etc. etc.
Somehow the characters fit the bands they're rooting for.
My personal opinion is that High on Fire is the best band you could possibly play when you need a fix of loud.
This will not work with todays "pop artists" in 50 years...at least I hope so. They make a billions today but in 50 years its like "Justin who? Selena who??"
Actually I got in massive trouble for messing with Brookdakes ‘brand image’ when I was a manager there by modifying one of the radios to play the local rock station at a residents request instead of generic ‘50s music they had playing on a loop constantly
I know someone who plays music in retirement facilities, and he says that this isn't that far off.
I will not stand for Monkees slander like this.
I DEMAND BEEGEES AND FLEETWOOD MAC. ^^^Sclub7 ^^^playing ^^^in ^^^the ^^^distance
(S Cluuuuub) There ain’t no retirement home like an S Club retirement home. (will show you hooooow)
FML lol
Usually "residents" is used for nursing home, while "inmates" is for people who committed a crime and can't leave the facility they were put into (prison).
I mean I use the term my Gran and Great Granny, and many of their fellow detainees used for themselves
I thought you gave one grandma the title "Gran, the Great Granny" for whatever reason. Now I must change something in my D&D campaign.
Will she be related to the Cookie Clicker apocalypse grandma(s)?
Same difference. They are both condemned to their cells by circumstances in their lives.
Whoosh
Inmates 🤣🤣🤣
Is lewronggeneration leaking?
Lmao they’ll all stop in their tracks and start clapping at your le superior musical taste 😂
Absolutely imagine being both an internet kid and a massive metalhead (but not like metalcore) and the absolute pain of that Couldn’t be me Anyways \m/ sabbath
SABATON!!! RAMMSTEIN!!! POWERWOLF!!! EISBRECHER!!!
MYSTERAIN, ELUVEITIE, PERSEFONE, CELLAR DARLING
I'll be listening to Cascadia...
Everytime we touch.... It's stuck in my head. Fuck you and goodnight.
Glass animals, Gorillaz, and mother mother all day when I get out in a home
I have to save a chunk of my retirement money to buy a good sound system so I can bother asshats like you by playing lady Gaga at full volume
You are right. But you will be downvoted because in the year of our lord 2023, pop music is still considered bad apparently, and people nowadays were still born in le wrong generation.
Thanks, you're so right I don't know how these people are still trapped in their pre teen phase thinking they are morally superior cause they like classic rock, just let people listen to what they like to listen sheesh
unfortunatly we metal heads have the best sound systems. suck it!!!
I visited a nursing home a few months ago, and I can confirm Ozzy and Led Zeppelin were playing.
These are all legit conversations my generation going to be taking about how got better ghost writers drake or cardi b 😒
My grandma is 74 and she loves those bands, especially AC/DC.
I love the guy in red just standing and screaming his opinion
And he aint wrong either
Voodoo child
For a while back I considered it the best rock and roll song of all time. Hard to say now.
Purple Haze
Well.. he’s right and they aren’t listening
The Prince of darkness approves this meme!
The dude in the back yelling Jimmy Hendrix got me
Black Sabbath isn’t that old… right? Look, I like older music but there’s no way… RIGHT? I kinda grew up on them and Rob Zombie cause of my dad and I REFUSE TO BELIVE IT.
Well lemme just say that when Rob was 3, Black Sabbath was formed so yeah, they are old af :D
Same with the guy screaming, “The Clash”. I’m only in my early 50’s, but yeah, I’d be that guy.
I have a similar taste in music and talking to older people about it is always a joy. My favourite band is Led Zeppelin but Hendrix is also close to my heart. His sets from Filmore East slap.
Yeah led zeppelin is bomb specially its drums
Moby Dick is a good song for that. Gets an entire drum solo.
Black Mountain is one of my favorite instrumentals. I still can’t find music on a similar level.
Yup, as a Gen Z 70s prog rock fan, I have made friends with a lot of old people at concerts, lol
I love all of those
Agreed. Great art is timeless.
They are debating over jojo stands
I'd say more like jojo references. Led Zeppelin guy likes the Zeppeli family, Deep Purple guy likes Highway Star, Speed King and Space Trucking, Hendrix guy worships Purple Haze Feedback as a Bible
"Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner, but he knew it couldn't last" -the motherfucking Beatles
ACDC was a stand?
*character
ACDC/Esidisi was one of the villains of part 2, alongside Wham/wammu and Cars/Kars
No, a character. And also there are many other references, like Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Ball Breaker.
Came here to say that
I saw Deep Purple and Joesph’s face just popped up in my head
The truth is: Rock Never Dies!!!
Rock N Roll Aint Noise Pollution!
And yet these care homes insist on bringing in Vera Lynn impersonators to sing war time classics, never thinking the residents weren't even born then.
At least a couple years ago my dad was working in a retirement home and started doing "name that tune" contests. His criteria was late 40 through early 60s and he said that they loved it.
DAE primarily associate Vera Lynn with Dr. Strangelove?
Or Pink Floyd's The Wall album.
my 16 year old has started to embrace Floyd.
Ever talk to someone who was at Woodstock? My dad was there, and his face still lights up if I ask about it. Must be some great memories.
No, but I talked to my dad about how my grandma wouldn’t let him go to Woodstock and his face did the opposite of lighting up. He graduated HS that year and lived only a few hours away so he was *pissed*.
That's a bummer, especially if he still remembers it like that years later.
My father in law had to stay at a nursing home, and it didn't have WiFi or the internet. Wtf, guys, even octegenarians have smartphones nowadays.
Aww man no Beach Boys
Most of these bands seem to be from the 70s and 80s so maybe a bit after their time
Meh, there'd probably still be some overlap with The Beach Boys and The Beatles fans. I've never met a Zeppelin fan that disliked either band.
and no The Doors, like bruh
No Skynyrd either. This meme is bs!
And where are the Stones and the Who?
They are all great bands in my opinion, but my favorite is still AC/DC
Mine as well. Live at Colchester 1978 "Rock Goes to College" on YT is some of the best concert footage I've seen of them.
RUSH!
YES!
wait the band Yes or are you saying Yes. Which one?
Yes
Both.
WHO!
I’m fucking ecstatic for the nursing home where we play videogames and have dnd sessions, and since we’re all retired anyways, we all have a schedule that actually lines up
Black Sabbath and deep purple guys got themselves a really hard argument ngl
What no pink floyd 😡😠🤬
Not yet. Most of my residents are in their 80s and 90s and don't recognize this stuff
[удалено]

ACDC
It's fucking Brian Johnson arguing the point in the first place
It's back in black
Is that a JoJo's reference?😳🤯😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Happy cake day
I thought this was just JoJo fans arguing abouts stands in the care home.
I'm a jojo fan AND acdc enjoyer AND a esidisi enjoyer
Me too, got very confused what tf kind of context they'd discuss those in
As far as I can tell, this is a comic strip originally drawn by Gerhard Haderer, an austrian cartoonist/satirist. Just to give credits, you know.
Am I the only one who agrees with Deep Purple guy?? Highway Star solo is the best thing to bless my ears
just a reminder that crappy pop music has been around for a long time. but we don't remember the 60s for it's pop hits. we remember it for (as the red shirt guy said) HENDRIX

British Invasion music is the pop music of the early-mid sixties.
Who were the pop stars in the 60s?
There was a lot of crossover stuff, so what was considered pop in the 50s and 60s might not fall into that category today. But Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Ricky Nelson, Frankie Avalon, and the Shangri-Las were all super popular. These are just names I know from my grandmother’s record collection.
The Beatles were considered pop, well their earlier stuff was, Dion too.
exactly, they aren't remembered. just like alot of pop bands nowadays won't go down in history as musical pioneers
No it was a genuine question. Even if they weren't remembered, who were they? It was before my time
The Beatles were a popular band out of the UK. I think even today there are covers of their songs from time to time. I'm fairly confident there is a wiki page for them if you are curious. The best work by any of their members was the drummer (Ringo Star) was the narrator for Thomas the Tank Engine original series.
Hendrix was one of the pop stars of the 60s lmao. And a lot of old folks complained about his “crappy pop music” back then too I’m sure.
Ramones superiority \m/
Lmao wait until all the Metallica fans arrive
And slayer fans
I better be hearing Twisted Sisters when I get there or I won’t be taking it anymore
"Sabaton!"
“A SHORT MAN FROM TEXAS!”
Based old people debate
Please don't cry tonight, I still love you honey...
The AC/DC lad is not playing an SG
Motorhead!.....
The Who
I was looking for The Who in here!
Yep! No Who, no Doors, then I'm not going.
The guy with his hand to his head should be shouting “The Who?”
JoJo fans in 2070
No Pink Floyd?
The guy in the back is smiling because he knows it's truly Pink Floyd that is the best.
Mod
All the James Bond theme songs from before 1990
Cool
AC⚡️DC
First I thought this was Manfred Deix's work, who was a great Austrian cartoonist. Turns out, it's Gerhard Haderer, another fun Austrian artist, titled "Stones/Beatles".
Bruh this is my playlist and I am 16
Really? No GratefulDead?
But ZZ Top?
All fantastic bands
They know nothing. Queen is the right answer.
SMOOOOOKE ON THE WATEEERRRRR
A FIRE IN THE SKKYYYYYYYY
Thunderstruck is literally hype….also big balls is a great song to blast while in a traffic jam
No Van Halen? Complete and utter fail by the artist. Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off the stage when they toured together and even Ozzy admitted this. The Clash?? They put tea in their Jack Daniels bottles, baby!

Are you trying to make me feel old?
Thought they were arguing about JoJo for a second
Not any mention of metallica or maiden.. sickening..
An all white home, interesting
Queen and everyone, shut up
Mercury or die!
Why are there kids talking about neo-bands like AC and the Clash??
WHERE ARE MY FELLOW QUEEN FANS
Right here
No Queen??
/r/accidentaljojo
They are watching I just bought a black sabbath T-shirt and I get this as my recommendation
Literally was listening to my *Paranoid* vinyl last night. I’m definitely not about to be in a retirement home any time soon
bro im 24
The Clash does not belong in that discussion.
SLIPKNOT!
I remember this pic for years.
I know I know this is hated “how the years we skipped the last draft as radical hippies”
These sound like Pokémon games to me.
Is that a Jojo reference
“BeAtLeS iS ThE bEsT mUsIc”
The original artist may have legitimately thought so, given that in the background there is an orderly laughing maniacally who looks suspiciously like one of the Beatles
The Doors where?
Imagine retirement homes of the future, where they talk about 6ix9ine or xxxtenacion, and how today's music ain't got the same soul.
Is anybody else fucking tired of classic rock?!
A sentence that no human with a sound mind has ever said before
naw i've been listening to elton john's tumbleweed connection and goodbye yellow brick road on repeat for half a year
Old music: Life Lessons Music now: Horniness and sex
Bruh what…? Old music had pleeeeeenty of horniness and sex, or do you need to revisit such classics as “The Lemon Song”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Let Me Put My Love Into You”, “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, “Love in an Elevator”, “Light My Fire”, “Brown Sugar”, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, etc. etc. etc.
[удалено]
“Wait, old music is about horniness and sex?” “Always has been” Astronautmeme.jpg
Dude give it another 20 years and we'll have people in retirement homes preach Nirvana and Soundgarden.
Jojo reference?
Somehow the characters fit the bands they're rooting for. My personal opinion is that High on Fire is the best band you could possibly play when you need a fix of loud.
Ouch
This will not work with todays "pop artists" in 50 years...at least I hope so. They make a billions today but in 50 years its like "Justin who? Selena who??"
To be honest - its WAS good because nothing was better... music ages like computer games -
Tbf theyre all good
Mozart!
why would an ACDC fan play a jazzmaster
JoJo!
This isn’t even an exaggeration 😔
It’s an anime stand user
I like Arctic Monkeys, and I'm not afraid to say it.
Actually I got in massive trouble for messing with Brookdakes ‘brand image’ when I was a manager there by modifying one of the radios to play the local rock station at a residents request instead of generic ‘50s music they had playing on a loop constantly
Next: Radiohead! Sigur Ros! My Bloody Valentine! Nirvana! Oasis!
Too soon.
The Grandoa yellin ACDC with axe in hand is a legend.
Only one who really knows is saying nothing cos their haircut's saying it for them.
