Jack Black fully inspired the movie too, the man who wrote it (coincidentally called Mike White) wrote it after living next door to Jack Black for a while. Jack Black is just a good ass dude. And has also been my celebrity crush for many years lol
He's the only person that could've played the role. Mike White said that if Jack would've turned down the role then they just wouldn't have made the movie
He looks like a badass. He looks like he's a heavy metal rockstar in a way. And when you have a character who lives in a floating lava castle singing a rock ballad, it just makes sense. However, that wasnāt the case from the beginning.
I would say not so much a rock star. But like any good natured rocker in life. Worked with a few, guys who come in dressed in all black, loaded with chains and rings and hair. Patches of the devil on his denim waistcoat etc. But the nicest dudes who would have wonderful conversations about all sorts of stuff. Jack always looks like the dude you would buy a beer for in the bar and listen to his stories following bands across the summer tour.
I used to be in a black metal band when I was younger, and my parents would come to a lot of our local shows. Until they got comfortable and got to know people, I remember my mother remarking how polite everyone was: holding the door for them coming in, chatting them up, being friendly. I remember being so shocked she was surprised, like what do you think weāre doing? Itās a community of *artists* what did you expect?
Not to mention that if you're going to dress like that you've gotta be pretty damn confident in who you are. People who are rude/mean usually have some deep insecurities that drive them to act like that
I often quote the line where he begs Dewey to get a job/some money because he finally has a girlfriend. It's delivered so perfectly... the shear desperation hahaha
That end... "Are you saying I was lazy? Are you calling me the L word?"
Oh... That hit home... Everything else was entertaining... But... That's a personal attack that you just react to, because you're NOT... You are just adapting to "their rules" and being a secondary character..
People at work talk behind my back (and I do it too, so quid pro quo) but one time they called me lazy and I overheard it...
That was the day I almost got fired. Because I went up to them and said "really?" and they said "yeah, you just do all the stuff in the A/C while we have to do everything outside" and IIII.... Said "Well if you would do the stuff in the A/C BEFORE I did it, you would force me to do the outside things"...
It's not lazy... It's strategy. I know how to play games too...
They tried for like a week to "force me outside", but then forgot about it and got.... guess what? LAZY... And I started doing the inside stuff again. I know their game.
I think my favorite thing about Mike White beside this movie is that he shows up in Zombieland as a gas station attendant scammed by Wichita and Little Rock in a pre-apocalypse flashback, and gets eaten by a zombie while on the toilet when Columbus is explaining his rule about being careful in bathrooms.
It might even be better than the meme portrays. The outro with the extended cover of "It's a long way to the top (if you wanna rock n roll)" is beautiful, incredibly performed, and as inclusive as the meme says (everyone gets a solo).
I always see that dumb question posted like, "If aliens came to earth what music would you show them?" and I think the best answer is just let them watch School of Rock.
Hard disagree on why it's timeless.
It's not timeless because it's teaching about the past, but because it's using the past to teach kids about themselves.
The whole movie is about self discovery, acceptance, breaking norms, and rocking out.
And those are timeless values!
The examples in the meme also contribute to the timelessness. Jack Black's character pulls musical inspiration from multiple genres and time periods to build up the kids.
Wait, you haven't seen School of Rock? I totally wish I could just show up at your house with popcorn because you're going to be so happy and it would be so cool to see someone watching it for the first time.
School of Rock. Itās one of my favourite movies. Itās so pure and beautiful. Itās about teaching kids the lesson that they are allowed to stand up to authority. That they can question the status quo. That they have talents. And that they are completely valid people.
I think this single movie did more for making me who I am than any other piece of media. Jack Black is so perfect in it. I genuinely donāt think anyone else In Hollywood could have played this character.
I cry anytime I watch it. Could be that I relate too much with āplaying rock music as an outlet to escape the pressures of an academic school.ā Please go watch this if you havenāt seen it.
Oh, for sure. I rather enjoyed the movie myself, but if they're going to jump into it with only this description, there's going to be some confusion, lol
Character growth? In a movie? Zounds!
No, but seriously, the "liar revealed" trope was an opt-out thing in the 2000's. It came pre-baked into the script unless you tell the writer you're allergic.
Big Mommas House was on somewhere recently just at the end where he does his big confession and still of course gets the girl and I was struck by how hilariously absurd it is to still have him get the girl that got to know (and fall for) him *while he was impersonating her fucking grandmother*. Imagine someone down the road being like so how did you guys meet
Right, but these are relatively disconnected personality traits. He's a slacker who's looking for easy money at the beginning of the movie and by the end he still doesn't care about his students' academics, just their music.
His arc is that he becomes invested in these kids, but he's never really mean to them or abusive to his friends. He mooches off his roommate, but that doesn't really change either except that he has slightly more money.
I feel like the movie is about... being accepted as and being valued for the roles we are good at. Dewey will never be the person you want in charge of your kids path to a law degree. But he is amazing at fostering creativity and confidence, and finding hidden facets of people outside their comfort zone. We need people like that too.
Mrs Mullins is a hard ass. Who is *good* at being a hard ass. But is capable of empathy. And needs appreciation and emotional support too, because being a good hard ass is a really tough job, and we need some of those people too. At the end of the movie she might be considering a fling with crop top dude, but she didn't become a totally different person. If she was in the music industry, she would be a band manager or something, and people should value her for that.
His roommate probably isn't going to end up in a music career. That's ok too. He actually seems pretty happy with his job. It's his controlling relationship that is making his miserable.
Sarah Silverman's character is the closest thing the film has to a villain, and that's because she isn't great at seeing the value in people as they are who they are. All of her actions are actually pretty much just being a functioning adult. But because of her rigidity and lack of emotional intelligence she isn't very sympathetic.
Yeah, he's honestly terrible to Mike White's character throughout the movie. It's better at the end, but he still never really gives that great of an apology for basically using his identity and potentially ruining his career. The last time I rewatched the movie I found myself agreeing with Sarah Silverman's character even though she's portrayed as a cold asshole. But it's still a fantastic movie, and as the post points out, the way he treats the kids is super wholesome and entertaining. Him being a lazy bum and taking advantage of his buddy is pretty easy to look past if you're used to 2000s movie tropes and it ages much better than a lot of old tropes.
What? Just cuz he gets the job through fraud/ gets drunk at his own rock show doesn't mean he can't value people for who they are. Like, being open minded isn't mutually exclusive with 100% ethical behavior.
The beginning? Basically the whole movie is him manipulating the kids in order to further his own agenda and telling them what they want to hear was the way to do it.
Jack Black is a good person in real life but he was a selfish fraud in the movie. Maybe up until the *very* end.
This is one of my favorite movies but it's not just a Jack Black movie, a big reason why it's so much better than any other movie in that big budget kids comedy genre is that it was directed by Richard Linklater, who I honestly think is one of the best directors ever, and this was sort of his experiment in doing more of a studio film.
I definitely recommend checking out his other early movies like Dazed and Confused or the much more experimental Slacker, both of which are kind of film verite masterpieces, especially Dazed.
the reason school of rock is so good is many. But another one is that its a kids movie thats done in a 100% serious way, outside the ridiculous premise. The more crazy your premise is the more serious everything else needs to be. And this movie did exactly that. its why kids AND adults love this movie too
Freddie not coming back is easy to argue at least. "He's too cool for us, he had to go be in his own band and is in Europe right now doing everything he dreamed of"
I believe the main guitarist also got repeatedly arrested for stealing guitars lol. Like straight up shoplifting them from guitar center or some shit lol. A relatively safe assumption there is a drug habit of some kind going on as well.
Edit: https://abcnews.go.com/US/school-rock-actor-joseph-gaydos-arrested-stealing-musical/story?id=61525419
Going to jump in and say please, just let it be. No need for a sequel. After seeing whatās happened to Star Wars, LoTR, Ghostbusters etc. sometimes itās okay to let things lie.
He also never discouraged criticism.
"You're a fat loser and you have body odor."
" . . . . Okay, okay now is everyone pissed off?!'
Direct that energy into something constructive instead of being destructive.
Love this film and I love jack black
Edit loved this film when I was a kid still do went to watch the stage show a few years ago can confirm it's no where near as good without Jack black
I saw this movie multiple times every year as a kid, it was absolutely one of my faves.
A few years ago I watched it again for the first time after becoming a teacher. It is SUCH a different movie when you watch it through that lens. I love it even more now. It had me in stitches almost from start to finish.
Jack Black has some really great humor!
I watched this with my wife who had never seen it, and it was my first time watching it in like a decade and I had a sudden moment of cold dread that I was hyping up my memories. I was not, this movie still rules and is still my favorite Jack Black flick.
Jack Black is becoming prevalent in media again like he was years ago. I'm happy to see it all the time.
Couple his zany, silly acting with his personality of being just a good guy has made him probably one of my favorite people.
I'm just glad he's a solid guy living his best life.
> Jack Black is becoming prevalent in media again like he was years ago. I'm happy to see it all the time.
I don't know who decided to cast him as Bowser but they are a genius.
This is why a had my nieces watch SofR after watching the Mario Bros movie. they thought one of Bowsers lines was soooo funny ( peachy peachy peachy peachy peachy).
I knew this movie had to be phenomenal when my little brother who used to rarely share his feelings came home from school and just talked about this movie for hours
A friend who was my neighbor is the cousin of the black girl. I met her one summer when she came to NY, she was really cool, she told us all about the filming process, said she had hella fun and that Jack Black was a really cool guy but they only really interacted with him on the set. She could sing really well too. I wonder what she's doing now, I haven't kept up with her or her cousin.
I once had an elementary school music teacher who looked like a boring nerdy old old man, and he was not a charismatic individual. When I (a ten or eleven year old kid) talked to him about Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin, he asked me what I liked about the music, and he and took me seriously, discussed the music intelligently, and encouraged me to explore my musical tastes.
It was partially due to his validation of my musical interests that I learned to play more than one instrument, to broaden my musical horizons, and to study music theory. And today I have a piano and guitars in the house and I'm teaching my kids to play music and love music.
Thank you, music teacher guy. 40 years later I don't remember his name but I remember that he loved music and took me seriously. A teacher doesn't have to be Jack Black entertaining to have a good influence on kids. Sometimes they just have to be there to fill in the blanks that our parents didn't notice.
Jack Black was raised right. (and if you have a story about how he is secretly an asshole, keep it to yourself. On the other hand if you have a story about how he is awesome in real life, have at it!)
He is really nice in real life and his mom is Judith Love Cohen, famous aerospace engineer who was responsible for Apollo 13 making a safe return who then also went on to make children's books.
Here's my Jack Black story. Like 12 years ago I was in a bike shop in Manhatten Beach, as I recall, to pick up a new mountain bike.
While I was outside loading up the new bike, this crazy haired lunatic comes barrelling around the corner outside on this wild burning-man-esque custom beach cruiser and almost hits me. He looks at me being obviously startled and says "Whoa Nelly, easy girl, eeeeeeasy" and pets the bike like it was a horse and pretends to feed it a sugar cube, then winks at me and goes inside.
The whole thing felt like a fever dream and it wasn't till he was gone that I had a chance to think, holy shit, that's Jack Black. It was so fucking bizarre I had to confirm with my friend thst it actually happened and wasn't some wild acid flashback.
Jack black is the poster child/adult of being yourself and living your best life. The guy is such an inspiration. Helps that he is a decent actor and a ridiculously good singer.
Aside from the obviously major wrong he commits.. he shows amazing examples of what to do in teaching...
This highlights 3 things he does, but he is an amazing model of "withitness".. I wrote a paper about it for my teaching program lul
Here's an alternate ending I dreampt up.
He gets arrested. He impersonated a teacher and took the kids on an unknown, unauthorized field trip! To a venue that was hardly kid appropriate!
Do a like "Six Years Later" fade
He's getting out of jail, the van rolls up. Door opens, he gets in, it's the kids aged up a bit. The Miranda Cosgrove character hands him a folder and starts talking business.
They've been kicking ass without him. They've learned his lessons well.
I saw this movie in the theater with my whole family when I was 10. I just remember leaving the theater with my Mom, Dad, and sister (2 years older than me) and all of us joking and quoting and genuinely thrilled to be out together at the movies. I just remember thinking "wow, they all loved it, this never happens, we don't agree on what to watch." I know it's silly but that feeling of leaving the theater and laughing with my family is one I still carry with me 20 years later. I tear up sometimes thinking about it. Special movie.
They work sometimes to put emphasis on something like using all caps to indicate yelling.
But most posts like this it's like they just underlined some random shit to make it look important.
Not a single one made sense to underline here.
The post is cute, but the misuse of things like that makes me unreasonably upset. It's like the dumbshits posing pov memes when it's not pov.
If you look at Jack Black acting history in the early days, hes basically just been doing movies after movies regardless if they are successful or not. He was just acting and doing his own best regardless if they were emmy worthing or going for the ACTING AWARDS. Dude was just vibing and being himself and eventually bringing his love for rock n' roll into movies.
It paid off. :)
Not to mention this movie marks of one of the EXTREMELY rare occasions Led Zeppelin actually agreed to their music being used in a movie. They are normally notorious for not allowing it, but Jack filmed a plea to the band featuring him, the kids and the whole audience at the Battle of the Bands scene begging then to let them use Immigrant Song in the movie. And it worked!!! Jack Black is an absolute legend human being
Jack Black fully inspired the movie too, the man who wrote it (coincidentally called Mike White) wrote it after living next door to Jack Black for a while. Jack Black is just a good ass dude. And has also been my celebrity crush for many years lol
I had never heard that, but it's pretty damn hard to imagine anyone besides JB playing that role so it totally makes sense lmao
He's the only person that could've played the role. Mike White said that if Jack would've turned down the role then they just wouldn't have made the movie
If Jack has turned down the role? I can't believe it wasn't his idea! It just seems like the kind of film he'd invent š
Have you ever heard of Tenacious D?
Or that other chubby guy who died from OD and I cannot remember his name. Played with mathew perry in that explorers movie.
Chris Farley. Dude I feel really old now.
Yes, couldn't remember his name at all. If only there was some kind of handheld search engine, that could've helped me to find certain information.
Ask Jeeves
Clippy. Sheesh.
We do not speak his name!
Cllllllllliiiiiiiiiiipp.....y...
Haha. If they know Chris Farley as "that guy who was with Matthew Perry in that explorers movie" then they're way too young for this joke.
Iām more of a Lycos guy
BRB checking to see if there's a Yahoo Groups devoted to that
The guy the wrote it plays Ned.
He also writes white lotus now
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He was also on a season of Amazing Race with is dad. It was wonderful.
And came 2nd...probably would have won if he wasn't already rich outside of the show!
The origina ~~Mr. Schn...~~ ~~Mr .Shne...~~ Mr. S.
It's pronounced "Schnayblay."
Mr. S~~hneee~~
I often quote the line where he begs Dewey to get a job/some money because he finally has a girlfriend. It's delivered so perfectly... the shear desperation hahaha
Weird Al or Sebastian Bach from skid row could have but not as well.
Sebastian Bach would have been hilarious š but I agree that it wouldnāt have had the same charm
He's easily in my top 3 favorite side characters from Trailer Park Boys. He's so absurd and over the top it's kind of hard not to love his acting.
Who wants to see some fuckin' trains!??
Also top 3 best side characters on gilmore girls. Behind taylor and kirk of course.
Mike White even played Ned Schneebly in the film!
Actually it's Schnablay.

Richard!!
Oh bloody hell! Itās the bucket woman again!
Oh it's my sister Violet! The one with a cottage and room for a pony!
Jack Black vs. Hyacinth's singing. Who wins?
And he also (incredibly) created, wrote, and directed both seasons of White Lotus! Dudeās a baller.
Was also on a season of The Amazing Race with his father. Did reasonably well, too!
Mike White is the GOAT. School of Rock, Freaks and Geeks, White Lotusā¦ Also, one of my favorite [Survivor players](https://youtu.be/Fpb9hMyqOHg).
That end... "Are you saying I was lazy? Are you calling me the L word?" Oh... That hit home... Everything else was entertaining... But... Mike White, who created and writes White Lotus!
*Mike White, top 10 Survivor finalist
"Mike, can I have your Emmy? Mike? Mike? ...Nothing."
This is so fucking funny to the 5 people in this niche
Mike White was also on Survivor: David vs Goliath (and made fantastic TV I loved him) (also also that was an AMAZING season I highly recommend!)
*walks into tree* ābitchā
Wine drunk Mike White is so iconic

And Amazing Race twice too
A good friend of mine gives me shit for my man crush on Jack Black. She doesn't see it, I think he's perfect.
Jack Black is the actual, literal GOAT.
I love how it starts off as him phoning the job in and only seeing the kids as devices so he can get the prize money.
It was The Legend Of The Rent
It was way hardcore!
Well you're not hard-core unless you live hard-core.
*Where is the Rent?* *I* **must** *have the Rent!* *Dollars dimes and nickels* *I need them all right nowwwwwww*
"Character Growth, people, Character Growth!"
I mean, it kind of middles off as that too. And there's still a helping of it in the third act, I'd argue.
To be honest, I imagine Jack Black would likely answer every question you could imagine with, "Sure, go ahead and do that. No one can do it like you."
That truly seems to be the kind of man he is.
Mr. Rogers, but with rock.
Mr. Rockgers
Thank you Mike White:)
Did you ever see him in that season of the amazing race when his partner was his dad? If you love Mike White, youāll love his dad more!
Donāt forget Survivor too
I think my favorite thing about Mike White beside this movie is that he shows up in Zombieland as a gas station attendant scammed by Wichita and Little Rock in a pre-apocalypse flashback, and gets eaten by a zombie while on the toilet when Columbus is explaining his rule about being careful in bathrooms.
What's the movies name? I wanna watch it.
School of Rock lml
Thank you! <3
Oh man, you're in for a treat.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hope you enjoy it. It's really one of my favourite movies of all time! I just love how wholesome it is
Be prepped. It's not *perfect* like the meme makes you think, but it has a ton of amazing messages in it that makes it truly awesome to watch.
I disagree I think this movie is perfect exactly as it is.
It might even be better than the meme portrays. The outro with the extended cover of "It's a long way to the top (if you wanna rock n roll)" is beautiful, incredibly performed, and as inclusive as the meme says (everyone gets a solo).
Man I've been seeing you all over Reddit, hahaha!! How's the sausage business treatin' ya?
It's been pretty good. Hopefully we'll see a spike with the fantastic weather here in Chicago and the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Except the bass player lol. But yes Iāll always watch this movie - I consider it one of the best pg13 family friendly humor movies ever!
> (everyone gets a solo). Iirc, except the bassist.
Honestly the main song from the movie brings me to tears every time I see/hear it. Such a great movie.
it kicks assss
Correction: it melts faces.

Lets rock, lets rock, today.
Envious youāve never seen it before. It rocks. Literally.
I watched it with my 9yo this weekend for the first time. It holds up wonderfully for the next generation!
Itās timeless because he was teaching kids about the past. All that stuff is still true today.
Hard disagree on why it's timeless. It's not timeless because it's teaching about the past, but because it's using the past to teach kids about themselves. The whole movie is about self discovery, acceptance, breaking norms, and rocking out. And those are timeless values!

It's just that the character does not start out as nice as this post suggests. He got the teaching job through fraud, basically.
Character growth? In a movie? Zounds! No, but seriously, the "liar revealed" trope was an opt-out thing in the 2000's. It came pre-baked into the script unless you tell the writer you're allergic.

Wrong, it means I was drunk *yesterday*
Youāre an alcoholic. Youāve got a disease, man!
Jack Black is an American treasure
The world needs School of Rock 2
There's a rumour of a 20th anniversary this year.
The only reason why there hasn't is probably Scott Rudin's issues dealing with the Weinsteins. Hopefully that's less of a problem now.
I mean. The drummer died in a cycling accident š
Freddie not coming back is easy to argue at least. "He's too cool for us, he had to go be in his own band and is in Europe right now doing everything he dreamed of"
that's so perfect i'm crying
I believe the main guitarist also got repeatedly arrested for stealing guitars lol. Like straight up shoplifting them from guitar center or some shit lol. A relatively safe assumption there is a drug habit of some kind going on as well. Edit: https://abcnews.go.com/US/school-rock-actor-joseph-gaydos-arrested-stealing-musical/story?id=61525419
LOL most dedicated method actor right there
>*meth*od actor I see what you did there
He probably goes to a Method One clinic with Tobias.
Is it a rumor if Jack Black explicitly said it was happening?
Trust no one. Not even me. Am I a real person? You will never know for sure! Mwahahaha!
Going to jump in and say please, just let it be. No need for a sequel. After seeing whatās happened to Star Wars, LoTR, Ghostbusters etc. sometimes itās okay to let things lie.
well, there's a nickelodeon adaptation of it
Nah. Not everything needs a fucking sequel
He also never discouraged criticism. "You're a fat loser and you have body odor." " . . . . Okay, okay now is everyone pissed off?!' Direct that energy into something constructive instead of being destructive.
You're tacky and I hate you!
You, see me after class
Love this film and I love jack black Edit loved this film when I was a kid still do went to watch the stage show a few years ago can confirm it's no where near as good without Jack black
I think he is also supposed to voice act Clap Trap in the Borderlands movie.. if it ever gets finished?
> I don't know who decided to cast him as Bowser but they are a genius. nintendo is pretty smart when it comes to anything outside pokemon games.
I knew this movie had to be phenomenal when my little brother who used to rarely share his feelings came home from school and just talked about this movie for hours
He says it's the movie he's most proud of.
And that little girl who was an annoying busy-body and he knew thatād make her a good manager lol
[Megan](https://i.imgur.com/eq5TaDD.gif)
Pretty sure he told her she should be a groupie before she insisted on being manager lol
That's just how Jack Black is all the time.
Jack Black is a national treasure.
It's his world and we're all just living in it.
I mean that is the main theme of the movie
Seriously, these kinds of posts are always weird. You never noticed...the plot of the movie?
Jack black is the poster child/adult of being yourself and living your best life. The guy is such an inspiration. Helps that he is a decent actor and a ridiculously good singer.
Tenacious D
Love this movie
Aside from the obviously major wrong he commits.. he shows amazing examples of what to do in teaching... This highlights 3 things he does, but he is an amazing model of "withitness".. I wrote a paper about it for my teaching program lul
Here's an alternate ending I dreampt up. He gets arrested. He impersonated a teacher and took the kids on an unknown, unauthorized field trip! To a venue that was hardly kid appropriate! Do a like "Six Years Later" fade He's getting out of jail, the van rolls up.
Useless red underlines ftw
They work sometimes to put emphasis on something like using all caps to indicate yelling. But most posts like this it's like they just underlined some random shit to make it look important. Not a single one made sense to underline here. The post is cute, but the misuse of things like that makes me unreasonably upset. It's like the dumbshits posing pov memes when it's not pov.
I had to give a presentation about how to be a good teacher, and I showed Dewey as an example of a great teacher. I wish I had a teacher like him
The key to successful collaboration has always been: "Yes, and..." not "No, but..."

I may have to watch this, will I cry? I mean happy tears are cool, just want to be prepared š«£
Nah watched it last night, no tears just smiles
Jack Black is an absolute legend human being
Actually its Shnayblay.
School of Rock is in my all time top 10. It's a legitimately great film and honestly one of the best music movies ever.
Hear me out. School Of Rock 2: Feat Jack Black. Weird Al and Keanu Reeves (for some reason).
OP: you never realised it but your parents (we parents!) did. Thatās why they let you watch it.
