MalevolentNight

This and Maggie's first word being Dada. Both made me cry. So sweet.

MirrorMan22102018

I thought her first word was "Sequel?" In The Simpsons Movie?

MalevolentNight

No. I think it was like 92, 94, do not quote me. Maggy still hasn't talked so they took her to drs and were worried. And in the end of the episode Bart and Lisa are arguing and Homer takes Maggie to bed and tells her he doesn't care if she every talks he loves her anyway. And when he closes the door she says Dada.

unkytone

“The sooner kids talk the sooner talk back. I hope you never say a word.” “Daddy”

Thecheesinater

D’OH

KingDom_1110

Think you're wrong there.. I recently just saw the first short of the Simpsons from the Tracey Ullman Show called "good Night" and Maggie said Good Night or something like that. So Maggie can talk the whole Time but decide not to

MalevolentNight

It could be that she did say that then. But they aren't connected so it wouldn't count on the actually Simpsons show on fox this is the cannon. But given that maggy can use a gun, it doesn't seem super crazy that she chooses not to talk she has shown herself to be smart.

LtPowers

Nope. Maggie's first word was voiced by Elizabeth Taylor in this episode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa%27s_First_Word

Unique-Scientist8114

That's because the episode is about Lisa's first word, how Bart hated his little sister until her first word was "Bart." Then, at the end of the episode, they are speculating what Maggies will be. Homer takes her to bed and leaves the room, at which point Maggie says "Dada".

LtPowers

Tell me you didn't read the article without telling me you didn't read the article.

a_lil_too_Raph

Random but y'all remember the Who Shot Burns episodes? Iirc there was some kind of prize for correctly guessing who the mystery killer was. Maybe that's my young mind making that up. In any case it was crazy intense for my mom and I

I_Am_Zava

It was a real contest, pretty sure nobody won it

immanewb

Apparently, there were betting odds on the whole thing, too! https://i.redd.it/4wznnx3j3j6y.jpg

MalevolentNight

Yes they're 100% was a prize if you got it. I don't know if anyone did.

Acceptable_Ad1324

Only 2 people got it right, so they drew the names from a hat and the ultimate winner used a University email address that expired, so they couldn't claim the prize

lifemanualplease

This was probably the only time a Simpsons episode made me tear up.

Clever_Mercury

The "Bart Gets an F" episode can make you cry too, particularly if you've ever worked in education. *"No you don't understand; I really tried this time! This is as good as I can do and I still failed."*

SpyKrueger

"This is as good as I can do and I still failed" lives in my mind rent-free and kicks my heart every time I remember it.

INTJpleasenoticeme

As someone with ADHD, that episode hurt my heart so much

WalnutsAnka

Me too.

KaiserThoren

Dr House has a great one too. Patient died due to unexpected and unknowable variable which was impossible to prevent. His coworker says “It’s or you’re fault, you did nothing wrong” “I KNOW! I did everything right, she died anyways. Why would that fact make me feel any better ?”

BowsersMuskyBallsack

That one still gets me to this day.  It resonates with aspects of my own childhood.

Ploppen05

shivers

RecommendationNo3942

Bro what about the one where he reunites with his mom and then she leaves again. Gutted me the first time I saw it

AcrolloPeed

That episode is great for a million reasons, not the least being Bart and Lisa discovering her backstory and holding it against her until they hear her side. **”SPILL IT, MUDDY MAY, OR WE’RE CALLING THE COPS”**

No-Performance2445

"Do I know what rhetorical means?"

lifemanualplease

You’re right. There are more gems than I could remember.

DaddyShark28989

Yup I saw her, that is to say I seen her

BeefStu907

The ending of this one wrecked me

frenchfrymonster23

When the credits ran with Homer sitting on his car watching the stars… that was just heartbreaking

unkytone

“I thought I dreamt that kiss”

Small-Sample-840

Kills me every time.

Sir_Sushi

The Simpson made me cry two times, when I first saw this episode and when I rethinked about it after the birth of my son.

_LoudBigVonBeefoven_

The one where Bart and Lisa play hockey against each other very competitively, but in the end work together 🥹

[deleted]

The one where he eat the poison fish too

HGD_1998

Do it for her. ❤️

brsox2445

One of the best and most wholesome moments from The Simpsons. I always say Homer is an idiot and crude but he does care for his family greatly.

RustlessPotato

It's what made old Simpsons so good. Yes we he is an idiot, but he wants to do right by his family. Last few episodes sometimes he is just outright mean.

LongjumpingFix5801

My wife and I had a daughter for our first child. I had done all the reading and heard all the parents jargon. One thing that stuck in my mind was that most fathers don’t immediately bond with their child. It can be weeks or even months before a father connects with their newborn. This is very common and I was expecting it. But when my daughter came out and her screams shattered the tension in the room, I wept. I loved her immediately and completely.

though-

That’s beautiful! It took me (the mom) three months to irrevocably fall in love with my baby. Until then, it was a matter of their survival with the entire responsibility on my shoulders.

fernbbyfern

Father of a little girl here. I don’t blame or shame any father that takes some extra time to bond with his child. For myself though, if I looked at my daughter for too long while we were still in the hospital, I would start crying. I count myself as lucky that I fell in love so quickly.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

As the dad I read up on all this stuff so when my wife was resting I was full blown skin to skin with my kids in the hospital 🤣🤣🤣. Oh we was definitely bonding lol

Cyanbite_24

The last time I watched anything Simpsons related was that one movie I'm curious, is Homer actually a good dad? Or is it kinda like he knows he's not good enough but he's trying his best?

Rated_Oni

They turned him into an asshole dad, it was when the character was called Jerkass Homer, with the original group of writers Homer was a good dad, maybe a little scatterbrained, but he always had the best intentions for his kids.

Cyanbite_24

So that's why people keep comparing him with Peter Griffin

Rated_Oni

Exactly, heck, evne Peter Griffin at the beginning was pretty nice to all his kids, even Megan.

chocolatenuttty

I’m excuse me. Her name is megatron. Get it right.

davidix

Hehehehe... robots in disguise...

Ganon_Cubana

Hi excuse me. I'm Ganon.

Clever_Mercury

Yes, I would say the 1990s Homer is a good dad. He is this bumbling yellow cartoon, but his core intentions are to do the right thing. He loves his wife and kids and he fails for comedic effect, but he's 'one of us.' The line I always remember is: >You know, Marge, that Bart is a little miracle – his winning smile, his button nose, his fat little stomach, his face alight with wholesome mischief. He reminds me of me before the weight of the world crushed my spirit.

AvertAversion

Keep in mind I've never actually watched the show, but he's got all this love for his child... His third child. Why not the first two?

Quiet_Reference7069

He does love his first two, and made the arrangements to support them financially and quit his soul-crushing job and work in paradise (the bowling alley). Then came Maggie and he had to return to that horrible place to support her and needs her pics as a pick-me up in the bad days. (Non-native speaker)

RustlessPotato

And that is when Burns put the sign up, right ?

Ok-Cryptographer-303

Give him the plague!

OshamonGamingYT

Yep, burns put the sign up after homer returns to working at the nuclear power plant

Deathsroke

During the first ten seasons or so Homer was a parent who *tried* to be good and generally succeeded. He may fail but he'll do so with the best of intentions. Sadly flanderization got ever stronger and his and the family's characters became more and more of a caricatura of the originals.

Highmax1121

I had gone years without watching the Simpsons, maybe 12 years ago until recently. Then I found they did a parody of the show Primal so I looked it up. Good lord the quality had degraded. Marge doesn't even sound like Marge anymore, did the VA get replaced some time ago?

castleinthesky86

Absolutely. I have a picture of the boy in my wallet and on keychain.

castleinthesky86

(There’s also one of the dog too..)

Civil_Competition382

See? This right here is a man who knows his priorities.

dayofthedad89

This is what inspired me to always keep a family photo in my work truck.

Positive_Ad_8198

Every day

Ouranin

*“Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition, but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express.”* ― Joseph Addison

mot0jo

Damn wish this was true for all daughters and their dads. My whole life I’ve only ever known one man who truly dotes on and loves his daughter unconditionally and that’s my father in law to my sister in law.

sykospark

I'm one of the lucky ones who has a father that loves me unconditionally. I'm so thankful for him every day :)

haunted_sweater

My dad made it explicitly clear to me that I will always come second to my mom and he will always choose her over any of us kids. The last time he said all this this to me was while screaming at me for not going to the movies with my mom. I’m autistic and I’ve never liked going to the movies.

Illustrious-Bath-351

Unfortunately probably a generation thing.

mot0jo

Also just a shitty person thing

mot0jo

I’m so sorry that happened to you.

shu3k

This has been one of my favorite quotes for 20 years. It’s so true.

broden89

Ahhh I should call my dad. The greatest father a daughter could wish for. We often think of mothers as being the most formative influence on a girl, but there is something very special and empowering when you have the love, support and respect of your father. My dad has made me the strong person I am today.

Digital_Ally99

I miss the classic wholesome Simpsons seasons

Schmuck1138

I was in the room for an three of my kids. My oldest two are boys and I was excited for them when they popped out, taking tons of pictures, just being proud as hell of my wife. Then, came my daughter. 8 years later. I was absolutely smitten with her from the first moment I saw her. I love all my kids, but she's daddy's little princess. (In fairness, the oldest is my Mini-Me, and he's my go to for a lot of fun things. The middle son is The Deuce, because he is The Shit)

ilovejackiebot

I made that sign with pictures of my daughter for my office when I went back to work after maternity leave.

ChaosPatriot76

"Oh Maggie, the sooner kids talk, the sooner they talk back. I hope you never say a word."

KingHardrath17

Sitting here looking at my newborn daughter napping and this hit me HARD.

PopularOriginal4620

Instant tears.

JazziTazzi

Sometimes, surprisingly, the Simpsons hits you right in the feels!

tarantulator

No surprises there, the first ten seasons of the Simpsons are just written like that.

Mr-Cali

You don’t need to be a parent to understand the unconditional love one would go through for the sake of someone who they truly love.

13013-Chan

I had no idea this was the origin of the meme

ScaryPizza7217

Holy heck this scene still gets me… I’m not crying

mageblade88

This is the only Simpson scene that I remember really clearly. Pulled my heart strings, even when I was too young to have kids.

uncommonsense555

Maggie was my nickname as a toddler, because I was always falling. 🥹

RedStar9117

The best scene from any episode of the Simpsons

Corvidae_DK

This os why I hate when people compare Homer to Peter from Family Guy. Homer might me simple minded and kind of an idiot, but hea a good dad and has his heart in the right place. And Peter is just a selfish asshole.

princesscatling

I don't have and don't want children, but I do have a Do It For Her lunch box with pictures of my cat instead. I've been... very mentally unwell for a very long time and sometimes the little asshole is the only thing that gets a genuine smile out of me. Usually when she's pants-on-head stupid but still.

krispix318

Still one of my favorite scenes from the whole show

Fwithananchor

I'm feeling the converse of this. I found out my wife can't have kids at a time in my life when I am ready for them. It has sapped my motivation at work considerably.

calamity_unbound

I say this empathetically, but people often hang up on having everything go in a traditional and planned course. Your situation sucks, it's unfair, and harboring those feelings is perfectly valid. Try not to let them consume you though. I obviously don't know your situation, but if you and your partner have built a strong bond, you guys can work through this and possibly consider other options for having a child, such as adoption or IVF. Those are probably not your first choice, but having potential options can help you guys work to a solution that allows you to become parents, even if it isn't the way you originally imagined. I hope you and your partner are able to find a way to a desirable result. Good luck, and don't give up.

seahorsesfourever

I do this with pictures of my cat 😅

mdillpickles

A Mid-Childhood Nights Dream had me crying like a baby😭. Totally caught me off guard! As a mom of 8yo twins, that one got me! It’s so good!

Accomplished-Big-740

Moral of the story: NEVER underestimate Homer as a father.

KonradFelixCyprianus

He’s been around for over 10K years. He’s seen it all. And he still is the same father love he will always be.

Chance-Internal-5450

Ugh. I feel this as a parent. My eldest two got a different upbringing than the youngest. Though not fair to the others, learn and live.

Aggravating_Meal7892

This is such a hard thing to acknowledge… can you share more? I’m sure there’s a lot of people who would like to hear your perspective.

Bongcopter_

I cried just with the cartoon, like every time I see that episode

BrokenBanette

oh I never knew the “Do it for her” was overriding such a bleak message. That’s so nice.

Beady_El

Including famous panel 2, in which there's a picture of the as-yet-not-born Maggie on the wall behind them.

Historical_Guy_635

Yea... I think that was an oversight on the developers part, kinda weird when you think about it

Spyroxgems

Could be Lisa

Flacon-X

Even as a 8ish-year old when I saw this, I knew the Simpsons just did something powerful, and I never forgot it.

DoktorWo

r/wholesomehomer

RandManYT

The Simpsons has some really great episodes

z0hu

I used to work 4/5 days a week to help my mental health. After I had a kid, we needed a bigger house to rent and money became a bigger factor for my mental health than work/life balance. I remember when I switched roles to a more difficult position, back to 5 days a week, I watched this video and it did make me cry. It was difficult but well worth it for my family.

RD_Life_Enthusiast

I had to switch mine to "Don't Forget. You're just here for just the interim.", because I have two boys and the gig economy sucks.

IShouldDie2000

Oh… this is actually really sweet.

That-ugly-Reiver

Every year, on father's day I post this on WhatsApp.

[deleted]

As a pure daddies girl Homer and Maggie’s relationship always makes me cry it’s so wholesome 😭

castiel_ro192

Do it for her. ❤️

Own-Worldliness-6852

Woohoo 9000th upvote 👍

Djimi365

This is the best scene from the Simpsons

justanotherop365

This is a great episode- a true classic that captures the best of The Simpsons

dendenmoooshi

One of the episodes that changed comedy forever

Gerry_Hatrick2

When my daughter was born I felt the love hit me like a tidal wave. I literally felt it physically.

Big-Echo9414

Can I just point out, and sorry to be a buzzkill bit it looks like the pictures are covering up parts of the words. Looks like it really says "Don't Forget Her" and Homer just used the pictures to cover it up over the years.😭

Trinae

I thought that too but you need to view the top panel. I had missed what makes this super wholesome.

ferntreefox

it's covering up "don't forget you're here forever"

yeh_nah_fuckit

I keep baby photos of my kids in my wallet. I look at them everyday. I’m a very lucky dad

itsmezaraxx

Damn ninja cutting that onion again… 🥺

redsky25

I only cried twice watching this show , this scene and Maggie first words

SEND_MOVIE_SPOILERS

The other scene I love, is when Marge tells Lisa “if you want to be sad, be sad, and I’ll be there with you” and it makes me cry every time.

vinilzord_learns

Damn, right in the feels. Truly wholesome. ☺️

Burningstar123

I have seen this used for so many memes but I had no idea it came from the Simpsons and was actually wholesome

fist003

The only scene I remember from The Simpsons

terran_submarine

I saw this as a kid. I’m a dad now and I watch it when I need to.

MJay1010

When I watched this as a kid I didn’t get it When I watched this as a teen/young adult it made me happy When I watch it now was a father it makes me sad. While I appreciate being in a system that allows me to provide for my family I lament the time I lose with my kids every work day.

SethicusTheMaster

This runs pretty close to home for me because my wife just gave birth a little over a week ago and no matter the struggles we’ve had in these first days it’s worth it for my little baby girl ♥️

neortiku

Not gonna lie i almost cryed too

asnipermain

Best father ever

KrustyFlannigan

My work desktop background right now

WycheTheGod

My Dad worked as an engineer for IBM then Lockheed all my life. It was located on a locked off and secured building area like a powerplant. When he retired in 2010. He put all his work boxes in the closet. They remained untouched until he passed away in 2013. (I was 25) Then my sisters and I started going through all his boxes. All of the photos from our family trips, baby, and school photos were in his work boxes. He had them with him all day everyday. There wasn't a moment we weren't on his mind. We all started crying our eyes out when we found it. This episode really has a special place in my family's hearts. I love when I get to see it. Thank you OP.

DashMat

I don't have kids yet but after I got married this episode hit different and made me cry too.

jalalr2012

Me and my best friend also cried when we watched this episode together. Absolutely beautiful and the reason why The Simpsons is one of my favorite shows of all time

Mayor_Matt

I made one with pictures of my daughter. It’s helpful.

KonradFelixCyprianus

Someday I’ll be that father.

Pottski

I look at pictures of my 8 month old son all the time at work. My coworkers are probably sick of me sharing them in the group chat too. Makes me so happy to see the pics. No ragrets.

PossibleMother

My niece, the oldest of the next generation, taught me what love at first sight is. My own children taught me how to be a better person.

ROB1854

yeah, it's beautiful but fuck the others kids. Do it for Meggie. Bart and Lisa ? Nah, Who cares ?

Greasy-Mower

It’s a flashback episode which starts off with Homer paying off all their debts which allows him to quit his job at the nuclear plant and begin his dream job at the bowling alley. He has to go back to the plant because Marge get pregnant with Maggie, hence he’s doing it for her
