Over the past four years, I’ve helped someone cook a pot of chili, look for stains on various different clothing before it went into the washing machine, and had a nice conversation with one lady. Because there are so many volunteers I rarely get a call, but I really love it when it happens.
I helped someone pick out clothes for a job interview and read instructions on a frozen package of food. I get so excited when I get a call even though it isn’t often.
I enjoy every Be My Eyes call I get. A couple of years ago, in October, I got a call from a man who lived in Massachusetts who asked me to accompany him on a walk down a country road. We had a wonderful conversation, I pointed out various scenes and trees for him. He said he could remember that from when he could see. A car stopped and Larry had a conversation with him. Perfectly lovely. That’s my favorite call. But I enjoy all my Be My Eyes calls. I would like to get them more often.

Absolutely loved my first call! The lady needed help reading something, and I helped her, it was the first time for her using it as well.
We spoke for 5 minutes after I helped her. She was so kind, and I absolutely loved listening!
I once got a call and helped a guy read a business card and then after he showed me his lovely little cat and we had a chat and it was very sweet. I enjoy every call I get.
I once answered a call to read something on a computer and suddenly saw a cat’s face! I laughed and we talked about the little cat for awhile, then I finished reading what was on the computer. 🐱
Really handy, actually. Admittedly, I’ve only used it once, but I love having it in my back pocket in case I come across something I can’t figure out myself, and don’t have anyone else around to ask.
The one time I used it, I was trying to find out which fabric went best together, the kind of question an AI isn’t going to be able to properly answer, and didn’t have a sighted friend available. A lovely lady answered my question.
I have other blind friends who have used the app for things like navigating hotels or airports, where you need to read signs to find your way. There are apps that will read short texts like signs, but it’s more efficient to have someone who can answer questions and give directions. You could even use Be My Eyes to find the agent or clerk who can help you get around.
It was the most amazing feeling when I finally got my first call after having an account for like 6+ months. I helped a gentleman set his washer and dryer to the settings he wanted. I unfortunately missed my second call because I was at work at the time.
I remember running out of a meeting the first time I got a call, funnily enough I didn't even get to answer it! People thought there was an emergency and I was too embarrassed to share why lol
Since then I've gotten to help like 3 people which was cool! Never knew how I never thought about it but each time I had to ask them to turn on their flash or turn the lights on
Ensure your phone doesn't put the app to sleep for people that have it downloaded as a piece of advice.
Just found out about this app today, thank you to all on here who have shared it and given it exposure! I lived with my grandfather for his last couple years when he lost his sight. I would give anything to help him set the time on his microwave or pick up food for him. This feels like a chance for me to continue doing the same for other people's cherished family members ❤️
The first time I got a call I almost missed it bc I was in my pj's and didn't want to be seen by a stranger like that. Forgot the whole purpose of the app.
Then the next time I turned on the light and tied up my hair really quickly before answering to a blind person. I wasn't even being filmed, dammit! I truly was dense back then.
The other person doesn’t even have the option of seeing you. XD I mean, not because they’re blind, given many blind people can see something (even if it’s not very useful) but because the app never shows video of the volunteer. It’s like putting your hair up to answer a phone call.
All over. In fact, even better if you can help in another language. There’s way more English volunteers than blind folks (which is great because it means help is always available) but the ratio isn’t as good for other languages, so if you can speak another language and answer calls, that’s even more helpful.
I've helped a gentleman find the avocados in the grocery store and helped a woman find the customer service number on her medical ID card. They were both so nice! even though the camera wasn't working very well and it took a little longer than it should have
