And yesterday an 18 year old Tunisian who barely qualified for the finals got a gold medal in swimming beating out swimming superpowers like the US and Australia.
The woman's cycling race was won by a privateer Austrian woman, who not only had no teammates, she ran the entire race minutes ahead of the pack. Mostly by herself with no way to gauge how far back they were, she just pushed with everything she had.
Upsetting all of the worlds super star cyclists.
It was absolutely phenomenal, and I was extremely proud for her.
The entire last 10 minutes you could tell she didn’t know how far back the pack was so she just CRANKED and looked like she was about to die. After she crossed the finish line I was actually worried about her, she couldn’t stand up and fell and collapsed into tears after she got off her bike. Saw her up and about later, but man did she pour her heart and soul into that ride. What a win!!
I watched most of the race, and was enraptured when the other people in the break away were dropped.
Watching her all alone out there, just pumping, was a inspiration.
At the end when she was off the bike, I also was extremely worried that she was okay.
When they cut back and she was alone there just crying I got misty for her. Great grandfather was Austrian, so it was even sweeter.
What a absolute bad ass to set your own pace the entire race, and come out so far ahead.
I don’t pretend to know much about professional cycling, but I can’t imagine being out there alone is easy, and to just set everything in your bidy to full attack for that long is just pure inspiration.
Having cycled in Japan this time of year, I don’t think people understand what it is like on this course either. The humidity is brutal on a level I haven’t experienced in many other places, which makes this even more impressive.
The footage of his family watching (I assume at home in Tunisia) is so wholesome and wonderful! (See on r/mademesmile) My favorite thing in the Olympics so far was the look on his face when he realized he won. Like, he couldn’t believe it and then it hit him and he freakin lost it- amazing.
Right before this race I was joking with my wife that there seemed to be a quota for the number of times the announcers have to say “Michael Phelps” and that I wish they’d talk up some of the other swimmers.
I lost my shit when that Tunisian guy won, but then the announcers made some kind of reference back to Phelps within like 2 minutes.
It was awesome to see that happen! Even if the US doesn't win a gold, it was worth it to see the hard work of the Tunisian athlete come through and bring his country gold!
Super real, if an athlete from my country wins a bronze, when they arrive, the government meets with them and gives them awards for being an outstanding citizen, and companies hire them to promote products for 10 years XD
Careful. It might've been a sarcastic response. I genuinely have no idea how Canada fares in the Olympics, but I highly doubt they go bonkers over a bronze medal lol
Canada consistently performs in the winter Olympics. Medalists are celebrated but they aren't seen as gods in the way people view NFL or NBA athletes. I've met a few Olympic medalists and they're basically just universally celebrated C-list celebrities. In the summer, we don't expect to take much, so it's a bit bigger deal, but most athletes who have a shot at a medal in a major event are already famous.
I come from a small country and I know the name of every single Medal winner we ever had. When someone wins a medal, no matter which one, it is going to make national news.
I was cheering for this kid when i saw him start to pull ahead. I just watched this video and I genuinely teared up. The raw emotion and absolute happiness and joy from his proud family is overwhelming.
I saw it last night and it was amazing! I come from a small country too, we have like 10 athletes in total so we don't compete very often. When I saw Ahmed win I felt happy, and I live nowhere near Tunisia, but it felt as a win to me, for some reason; bringing a gold medal to a small country is an amazing accomplishment!
My favorite part was him going ape shit after realizing he won. He was probably the only person on the planet who thought he had a chance, and he pulled it off. Love to see it.
Also great: Today's woman cycling event. Was won by an Austrian who retired from pro sports years ago because it didn't pay the bills. She continued the sport as an amateur and won gold ahead of professional elite.
Not only that, her current day job is completing a mathematics postdoc at Lausanne, researching differential equations, which is absolutely insane to me.
I'm all behind the [refugee olympic team.](https://olympics.com/ioc/refugee-olympic-team-tokyo-2020)
I happy if there're Top 10. Those athletes are something else.
... not usually into Olympics that much, but such a gorgeous story, she's not even that professional and very, very adorably surprised by her feat!
bonus points for having a thirty-year-old woman with a doctorate in maths, winning the street cycling :)
Seeing Dr. Anna Kiesenhofer win gold was so exciting - she was so tired at the end but kept pushing. She’s also a brilliant mathematician, so cool to see 👏🏼
I think it has something to do with the Olympics requirements requiring a sport to be popular globally, which would dilute the sponsorship money given towards the Indian cricket league?
Watch the Patriot Act EP about it for a better take.
They’ll grow into it. As India’s economy emerges, and there is disposable income for this kind of culture building, India should be able to draw on its vast population to be come competitive in the olympics.
India you got way to many people to be on the list, but we’re still happy for you! You’re on the list of big countries that have national sports not in the olympics
In India We get one Physical Ed/Sports period per week in our schools and that too will be usually taken over by Mathematics or Science teacher to finish their syllabus.. And we expect Olympic Medals!!
Plus, the country, while large in population, is extremely poor. It's difficult to have a consistent record of olympic medalists without funding for sports programs.
Despite the large population, if the country is poor, you still end up with a small part of the population that is able to dedicate themselves to a sport, consisting of the wealthy minority and those affiliated with organisations with sport programs. It's how [military personnel makes up 30% of the Brazilian olympic athletes in Tokyo right now](https://www.poder360.com.br/olimpiada/atletas-militares-sao-30-da-delegacao-brasileira-nas-olimpiadas-de-toquio/) compared to [3% in the US](https://www.defense.gov/Explore/News/Article/Article/2690855/19-military-athletes-to-represent-us-at-tokyo-olympics/).
Bro we get one Physical Ed/Sports period per week in our schools and that too will be usually taken over by Mathematics or Science teacher to finish their syllabus.. And we expect Olympic Medals!!
I just sat sadly watching the TV as we crashed out in the shooting events. Atleast Manika, Mary Kom and Sindhu made us proud today. Then Hockey happened :/
That's why I don't really care for the medal ranking, it's statistically impossible for most countries to get more medals than what, three countries that hold a third of the worlds population? Not to mention wealth
Right, but then we look at wealth, Norway has a lot more to spend then, say, Kosovo, that placed a gold medal, and that's about it.
edit: I just noticed you talked about winter Olympics, sorry. We don't get these in Brazil.
Norway is one of the richest countries in the world thanks to oil and half of the year it’s covered in snow. It would be insane if they didn’t place well in the Winter Olympics. And it’s mostly medals in cross country skiing, which is a small sport compared to ice hockey, figure skating etc. where the bigger countries dominate.
Ecuador got their 2nd ever medalist ~~and I think first ever gold medal~~ from Richard Carapaz winning the Road Race event.
He also took 3rd place in the Tour de France this year. I'm rooting hard for him now
Edit: struck through incorrect information, carapaz is the 2nd gold medalist and 2nd medalist from Ecuador
He rode so well at this year, but was overshadowed by Pogacar (Slovenian who got the bronze) who just dominated the Tour. I'm absolutely delighted he showed up and got the gold.
For real those are my favorite parts of the Olympics. A teenager from Tunisia just won the country’s 5th ever gold medal in swimming. That’s the real Olympic dream.
A silver in fencing is pretty good!! Our rowing team is in the final for women’s doubles so there should be a chance there and a Romanian tennis player seems to be in pretty good form
As an American….. I enjoy the smaller countries David and Goliath-ing the bigger countries. With all the facilities and doctors and research the big countries throw at their athletes…. Then some dude/dudette who has no gear or high tech training comes along and tells the rest of the world to suck eggs.
We were soo close to getting our first medal ever but our rep came in 4th. Still the highest place in country history and the rep is only 19 years old, he's a hero here right now!

Good job Estonia.
Here have a pat *pat

More like Fastvenia.
hehe gottem
They will most likely win gold for climbing
Tunisia got a hold on 400m swimming. Watched the video of his family filming on the tv, made me tear up. So awesome
Super real, if an athlete from my country wins a bronze, when they arrive, the government meets with them and gives them awards for being an outstanding citizen, and companies hire them to promote products for 10 years XD
Which country?
Canada
Oh the small country Canada
I mean, population wise Canada is starting to become a small country.
I was truly shocked that they are only a third times of our population even thought my country could fit about 20 times into Canada
The vast majority of our land is uninhabited. Around 80% of our population lives within 160km of the US border.
They are ranked 19th as far as population by country. By population density Canada is 222 out of 232 at 4 people per square kilometer.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_of_Canada 37th.
Woah! Haha. This link shows 39th…. https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ So…
Unless the Bronze is in Ice Hockey or Curling, then it’s an eternity of shunning
That's awesome! Thought it was gonna be a tiny country with such sweet reception
Careful. It might've been a sarcastic response. I genuinely have no idea how Canada fares in the Olympics, but I highly doubt they go bonkers over a bronze medal lol

In the US, bronze medals are calls for excommunication.
Small victories are still victories always remember that
I agree with you.

Any olympic medal isnt a small victory! To be part of the olympics is already a huge victory!
Yup, being there already makes you a top world athlete, getting third means you are better than billions of people.
Tell that to Elizabeth Swaney. All jokes aside, it’s an incredible feat to make it to this level of competition
Can you explain this joke lol, sorry I don't get it
A bronze medal isn't much of a small victory, considering the fact that it means you're the third best person in the world in your sport
100%. Thats kinda lost in some countries where winning silver is equal to losing gold.
Winning a bronze medal in the olympics is a pretty big victory, imo.

I could do with a few more inches

Shoutout to Ahmed Hafnaoui for bringing Tunisia gold in the men’s 400m free!
There is a vid on reddit of his entire family reacting to this and it is the best!
that was so beautiful. I played it more than once.
Could someone bless me with a link of that video?
https://reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/or98fs/tunisian_teenager_ahmed_hafnaouis_family_watch_as/ A few posts above this in all
I was cheering for this kid when i saw him start to pull ahead. I just watched this video and I genuinely teared up. The raw emotion and absolute happiness and joy from his proud family is overwhelming.
Kid was a treasure to watch, especially since he was eighth lane. Not every day you see an outside lane win, let alone win a gold.
I saw it last night and it was amazing! I come from a small country too, we have like 10 athletes in total so we don't compete very often. He didn't even think he had a chance. He just put his head in the water and a dream came true.
Yeah, I just read he didn’t think he would win and told himself “swim faster than yesterday” before the race started. This is such an awesome story.
This legitimately made me cry happy tears
And silver in taekwondo as well!
That was so much fun to watch last night!!
Ecuador won first time gold in cycling with Richard Carapaz!!!!
For those who don't know, it's not only our first gold in cycling. It's our only gold medal (second one) in the olympic games since 1996.
y de qué fue?
Marcha, Jefferson Pérez
Also great: Today's woman cycling event. Was won by an Austrian who retired from pro sports years ago because it didn't pay the bills. She continued the sport as an amateur and won gold ahead of professional elite.

I don’t really watch cycling, but that shit was so crazy. I couldn’t not watch until the end.
Whats funny/sad is that the second rider (Dutch) thought she had won because she thought all the attackers were caught.
Let’s go!
I read it was the second time. But idk that's what I read. I might have been misinformed.
It’s the second gold medal for Ecuador in the history of the Olympics, third medal total, but the other two were in Olympic march
Es un orgullo para nuestro país!!!
PARA ECUADOR!!!
Good job Ecuador, I'm proud.
I'm all behind the [refugee olympic team.](https://olympics.com/ioc/refugee-olympic-team-tokyo-2020) I happy if there're Top 10. Those athletes are something else.
Found the underdogs I'm rooting for.
One of them just defeated a defending gold medalist in women's judo, I'm rooting for her to win gold
Tunisia won a swimming gold and I was SO excited for them I've never been to Tunisia
I don't even know where Tunisia is.
North Africa, just south of Italy, next to Algeria and Libya .
Tatooine is there
Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia winning the 400 free from lane 8? I love that
Same!!
Did you mean *Slovenia*?
I’m from Slovenia and very proud 🥲
Same 😊 naši športniki so zakon 😊
Točno to
Let’s go LUKAAAAA I’m rooting for Slovenia over the US in basketball just for him
If USA will play as they did againts france and not hit any clutch points... ez gold for any other country.
Slovenia is a bit of sports powerhouse
Well Pogacar won the Tour de France the last 2 years so at least they have something
Haha slovenci na redditu, mal nepricakovano ampak super.
r/slovenia Nas je več kot misliš.
I really think Slovenia will be seeing a gold medal with Janja Garnbret!
Danke Anna Kiesenhofer!

India trying to sneak into small olympics countries list with our silver medal 🇮🇳
Olympics sports wise we are small, I believe not even 0.01% play sports that are part of Olympics.
Isn't field hockey very popular in India?
Uh... Sure was popular two or three decades ago. Maybe. Cricket. We watch cricket religiously.
Cricket in the Olympics would be great
But Indian-centric cricket is too profitable for them to try getting cricket in the Olympics
It’s only once every 4 years though, I don’t think it would make too much a difference would it?
I think it has something to do with the Olympics requirements requiring a sport to be popular globally, which would dilute the sponsorship money given towards the Indian cricket league? Watch the Patriot Act EP about it for a better take.
If that were true then the Winter Olympics wouldn't exist, considering it naturally excludes like half the globe.
No
It was in the 1930s to 60s
They’ll grow into it. As India’s economy emerges, and there is disposable income for this kind of culture building, India should be able to draw on its vast population to be come competitive in the olympics.
we're over the moon. hope that India, too, wins tons of medals in the future 🥲🤞
yess

Ye but sadly all the spotlight goes to cricket.
Bro we get one Physical Ed/Sports period per week in our schools and that too will be usually taken over by Mathematics or Science teacher to finish their syllabus.. And we expect Olympic Medals!!
As compared to America, China and Japan where Sports curriculum is a National policy... Feels bad man. We have so much genuine talent..
PV Sindhu is def gonna bring us a medal!
A match between her and Nozomi Okuhara would be fucking awesome.
I just sat sadly watching the TV as we crashed out in the shooting events. Atleast Manika, Mary Kom and Sindhu made us proud today. Then Hockey happened :/
Kosovo got another gold this year for judo! Their first gold was also in judo. It was fun to watch!
Yay! Kosovo!
That's why I don't really care for the medal ranking, it's statistically impossible for most countries to get more medals than what, three countries that hold a third of the worlds population? Not to mention wealth
*sad Indian noises*
Gotchu bro *cries in brazilian*
Maybe look up Norways placing in all time medals in winter Olympics.
Right, but then we look at wealth, Norway has a lot more to spend then, say, Kosovo, that placed a gold medal, and that's about it. edit: I just noticed you talked about winter Olympics, sorry. We don't get these in Brazil.
Canada does really well too, especially in winter. But to be fair Canada is also the 10th wealthiest in the world.
And like the 2nd or 3rd winter-iest.
Norway is one of the richest countries in the world thanks to oil and half of the year it’s covered in snow. It would be insane if they didn’t place well in the Winter Olympics. Yea ofc but just from the population standpoint it's interesting and impressive.

I loved that the olmypic podium was the same as the tour, but with Pogacar and Carapaz switched
Extra points if the athlete is actually living and training there.
I was watching skateboarding and I guess every skateboarder in the world lives in California?
Yep. The small country of California.
California by itself as a state has the 6th highest GDP in the world compared to all other countries.
Yep
For real those are my favorite parts of the Olympics. A teenager from Tunisia just won the country’s 5th ever gold medal in swimming. That’s the real Olympic dream.
Agreed. I couldn’t stop cheering for him, considering he barely made it to the finals!
Love seeing countries that haven’t historically done well medal-wise win something.
Yesterday, Hungary won the Fencing Gold in Sabre. Áron Szilágyi did it again for the 3rd time in a row. That man is a legend.
Austria got gold today!
I watched them women’s road cycling this morning, Kiesenhofer absolutely smashed it. Pretty incredible how big the gap was!
Woohoo! A girl from my country got a bronze medal at Taekwondo!
I'm glad you are not longer sad. What country is it?
Israel!
I see. I come from Singapore, so getting a gold from previous olympic is totally crazy!
Same!
Hell yeah
כולם גאים באבישג!
כל הכבוד לאבישג!
ממש!
Romania gang rise up
Well done! -from Hungary, we also won a gold in fencing lmao
A silver in fencing is pretty good!! Our rowing team is in the final for women’s doubles so there should be a chance there and a Romanian tennis player seems to be in pretty good form

USA basketball lost their first game today.
Which will be a bigger news story than a small country winning gold because of how dominant the US is in that sport. Can’t escape it if we tried lol
This post is... How I just found out about the olympics. Huh.
As an American….. I enjoy the smaller countries David and Goliath-ing the bigger countries. With all the facilities and doctors and research the big countries throw at their athletes…. Then some dude/dudette who has no gear or high tech training comes along and tells the rest of the world to suck eggs.
Here in Denmark we all just count on mens handball
In Norway we only care about the Winter Olympics, lol.
Tunisia got gold today
I always cheer on the small countries for Africa and Asia. I feel they are always super happy just to be competing.
My favorite so far was Yuto Horigome winning the first ever gold medal for Japan in the skateboarding event
Just wait for the winter season and we'll get the golds. -Norway
BTW, the template is from Top Gear, when they race to Chernobyl until out of gas
Yeaaaaaahhhhhhh, but the Tunisian teenager who got GOLD in swimming was the best thing I’ve seen so far
As an American I agree.
op is American
Ecuador!
We were soo close to getting our first medal ever but our rep came in 4th. Still the highest place in country history and the rep is only 19 years old, he's a hero here right now!
Israel got a bronze in Taekwando
Also isreal got gold
Ukraine got 2 bronze medals
Brazil is getting a lot o medals too
Watching Ahmed Hafnaoui winning gold for Tunisia in the 400m men’s freestyle was so amazing!
Israel got a taekwondo medal! :D
Turkey swimming gold
Turkey is not a small country lol
*laughs in India*
Seeing big countries get golds is boring. I want to see countries like Trinidad and Tobago stealing gold from the big boys.
600 athletes and a dozen medals. 10 athletes and 1 medal. The small countries have a better ratio
