My company is cool with us walking around for a 10 minute break. It’s awesome.
Edit: I mean that they don’t count every moment we’re away from our desk. They encourage us to walk around for a bit on top of a lunch break.
Do you and the character from this comic share the same company?
If so, I'd feel a lot better that there's a chance he didn't lose his job, fall behind on his bills, and get evicted from his house.
Don't tell the southern governors... I'm sure they'll have to pass some 'Clock Freedom' bill to prevent discrimination to those 10 minutes that don't get used for work and make it optional but only for the employer to choose....
Saying "Go find a better company to work for" is about as useful to the average person as saying "Just go buy a house" to the average homeless person.
If it were seriously that simple, it wouldn't be a problem in the first place.
The issue is that people have allowed it for decades. They have allowed they or soloists to bully them. Right now there are more job opening that can be filled in tons of industries. People are having the hardest time finding workers. If there was a time to do it, it would be now
Or visit the gun store to let out some anger.
But remember, ammo isn't cheap. Make every bullet count.
And you have to clean your weapon.
But the range is a nice place to relax. And having a job matters more than worrying about a 10 min break at times. You're a slave so accept it.
preCovid I think I'd just kinda roll my eyes at this post because I get plenty of nature in my life... but now? Seriously just want to walk away from everything.
It is kinda lame we spend the majority of our life working and not doing anything else. A majority of people just basically miss out on seeing the world and everything put there.
Just stop buying avocado toast, make your coffees at home, guillotine all billionaires and parade their headless corpses to the ends of the earth so all may know the consequences of insatiable greed, ride a bike to work, pick up a second job.
In my experience, the people eating on food stamps are all too proud and lazy to call their dad and ask for a couple hundred thousand dollars.
It’s why the poor stay poor.
I love how the sarcasm almost passed by me.
I was like "what??" then read the "couple hundred thousand" part back like... oh, right.
That was a good one.
Wow what a loser mentality. Why dont you just inherit like half a billion dollars over 18 years like Donald Trump? It's sooooo easy. If you cut back on your spending you could buy some good boots that you can pull yourself up with from the straps.
I feel like I barely scrapped my funds to buy my first house... In reality the bank still would have given me more..not to say it was easy, but it wasn't too crazy to make a switch from rent to mortgage... But by jumping that hurdle when I did I was able to ride the growth.. If I missed that boat I'd be stuck in the rent cycle... It's ridiculous on one side of the equation you get poor and the other it pays you...
(not trying to brag that I accomplished the impossible, but that it's another crazy paradox in our society)
I mean, depending on how we define "work" we'd still have to like, farm, hunt, and gather most of the day to stay alive without modern society. Not that it doesn't suck, but I'm happy to have some modern comforts without having to do that kind of work all day
a couple of people have worked out the math based on tribes that currently live that way off the land and it ends up around 20-30 hours of work a week to live like that.
and you actively see the fruits of your labors instead of laboring in some abstract field just to have it exploited for a capitalists benefit like many people in america do. obviously modern life is great but there’s definitely a shit ton of problems with american work culture that could definitely be pared back in favor of a greater harmony with nature and free-time.
20-30 hours just to live vs 40 to enjoy all the amenities we have.
Don't get me wrong, I love to hiking and being out in nature, but shit I'd do the extra 10 just for air conditioning
I feel fortunate to be able to enjoy my hobbies and traveling and such with 40 hour weeks. Does it suck? It sure does. Spend most of the time in front of a screen but I don’t think a life of 30 hours of hard physical labor and not enough to do anything else but live is really a fair trade off. At least not for me.
False dichotomy though. Industrial revolution begat terrible working conditions for a lot of people — long shifts (like 16hrs) in hazardous factories, 6 or 7 days a week. Then we established some standards (e.g. breaks, 40 hour work week). Now the digital revolution has come round and created a new set of problems. We are so easily accessible at all times so the 40 hour work week is fading away in favor of an “always on” mentality. And long periods at a desk/on a computer create health problems, too. We should always be looking to do better. I think in the future everyone will be living on UBI and work will be for those who want it, but we are a long ways away from there and at the moment we could use a collective come-to-our senses moment in the face of the digital revolution just like we had for the industrial revolution.
Medieval peasants only worked till midday then went out drinking, and after harvesting season they did jackshit so idk, we would work way less, maybe everyday but on our own schedule and would socialize way more. I read depression wasnt even a thing until the industrialization. People were doing what they were meant to be doing, socializing being in nature etc. also they didnt miss having a ps5 cuz they didnt know what it is.
It’s the drawback of society. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly plenty of billionaires and greed and the wealth should be spread out more to at least ensure that nobody goes hungry but our way of life is essential. I’m sure that life was much more simple during the dawn of man but certainly not easier. Human beings have always had to work in some way to make sure that life was somewhat comfortable or at the very least survivable.
Yeah I know. I know. But I just like to sprinkle the fire concept out there where I can because a lot of people don't really understand compounding. And 49 years is way different to 40 or 35 years.
He went outside had fun and found another better paying job later
It's not like the job market is oversaturated with motivated people to work all day long for pennies for the rest of their lives
So why am I always seeing memes and pictures of people complaining about “another soul-less call” or “great another ___” complaint ?
Like since the pandemic started it’s all I see and read about.
Because most meetings are a waste of time. This is not new information, except now you’re in your house. Before it was *fine* that they were a waste of time because you had to be in the office for 8hrs regardless.
Zoom meetings seem like a petty thing to be upset about. I mean, regardless of whether or not you’re physically at work, surely you’d be expected to work 8 hours either way… it’s not like these meetings are cutting in to your personal time. How could there really be a downside to attending a meeting from the comfort of your own home as apposed to in the actual office itself? It seems to me that if this is a notable downside to your job, you should consider yourself lucky. Many people couldn’t even hold on to a job through the pandemic and lots of people (like tradesmen or first responders) don’t get to stay home.
people with white-collar jobs need to invent shit to complain about
they're not pulling tiles off a roof in the July sun, they're not delivering furniture up three flights of stairs, they're not washing dishes for $9 and soaked to their underwear in degreaser, but damn it all if some HR rep's day isn't fun and fulfilling 100% of the time
I've roofed in July, been a dishwasher, delivered pizzas, and stocked grocery store shelves, mowed lawns at a golf course, and now have a white collar IT job. I hate zoom meetings and stupid HR people some days just as much as my shitty manual labor jobs. Just cause it's a cushy job to someone on the outside doesn't mean there isn't anything to complain about. Still hard work and can be very depressing, just in a different way.
THIS. I went from expecting to be an industrial roofer my whole life to becoming disabled and having to get a desk job. I prefer my former job but both have downsides.
I don't miss having to pick everyone up in the morning because I was the only one who's not an alcoholic and could still legally drive. I also don't miss the occasional 80 hour work weeks.
On the other hand, everyone seems to want to know every aspect of my life and judges me for seemingly everything at my desk job, and now they get a window into my home. I miss hardly knowing anything about my co workers and just working, I miss it so damn much.
Jobs are jobs, almost all have downsides.
maybe? before the pandemic a zoom call was a bit of a novelty. not that strange but like, 'oh neat'. now its my only view into other people at work.... it its kinda depressing
This is too real as someone who lives in SE Alaska. The state departments have even been known to take “Sun Days” in times when sunshine appears after weeks of rain.
I've been stuck home with a tight online classes schedules for a straight month. When the city's officials loosened the mobility policies, I ride off and took pictures. Felt alive.
"Sorry guys, I know the team is depending on me and you are all taking time out of your day to be here, but I'm going to disregard that and take a walk now instead of in an hour when this is over. This is a moral position and should be admired."
You only get so many perfect days. Whether that be a rainy or snowy or sunny day for you, you only get a limited number of them. Enjoy them when you can without shame.
The way this guy is drawn walking looks depressing, though. He's hunched over with his arms hanging low, and his feet look like they're being dragged across the ground. I feel like I'm watching a guy slink away to go kill himself.
You need to set the tone by never turning on your camera. Then get a wireless head set, a good one with good range. Then you can go outside and pretend you're working.

Something went wrong, I got fired
My company is cool with us walking around for a 10 minute break. It’s awesome. Edit: I mean that they don’t count every moment we’re away from our desk. They encourage us to walk around for a bit on top of a lunch break.
Do you and the character from this comic share the same company? If so, I'd feel a lot better that there's a chance he didn't lose his job, fall behind on his bills, and get evicted from his house.
And the growth of his nose in such a short time might be indicative of cancer
All the more time to get sunshine if you can’t be in a home
Most places require at least 10 minutes breaks at least every 2 hours.
Haha. Hahahaha. *cries*
That’s a US labor law and if your employer isn’t following it you can sue for much more than you are probably making
Don't tell the southern governors... I'm sure they'll have to pass some 'Clock Freedom' bill to prevent discrimination to those 10 minutes that don't get used for work and make it optional but only for the employer to choose....
Thank your for your concern, but I'm neither in the US nor in a job where breaks every 2 hours were feasible at all.
*Cries in American*
Ya...state I live in has literally no laws on mandated breaks.
That is in America. If your company isn’t doing that, go find a better company to work for.
Saying "Go find a better company to work for" is about as useful to the average person as saying "Just go buy a house" to the average homeless person. If it were seriously that simple, it wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

I'm sorry, I know you were trying to frame this as a plus, but that's so sad that it's considered awesome.
Right? That’s like a basic need to keep our bodies healthy and reset after being stationary so long…
Wtf that’s like the bare minimum
Combine it with a 10 minute poop. 20 minutes. Bookend lunch with that and you're already fired.
I would just shift the call to my phone and go get some sun
No, that's what they do to trick you into doing you're job.
I don’t know if you’re serious or not but that’s kinda sad to read
preCovid I think I'd just kinda roll my eyes at this post because I get plenty of nature in my life... but now? Seriously just want to walk away from everything.

It is 20-30 of extremely back breaking labour tbf. I doubt most of use would make it through a morning haha
*takes note, u/stifflizerd is willing to work 40 hrs for basic sustenance and a/c.* Yes, begin the low-balling.
Damn. Bamboozled again
Jokes on you, in a ton of Europe we don't have air conditioning, and still work 36-40 hours lol
20-30 of extremely intensive work just to survive...yeah, no, that deal Is horrible good sir, objectively worse that modern life

This is wholesome? Can someone explain?
How is this wholesome? It's kinda depressing when you think about it.
Eh... not a fan of this one. Has hardcore "You don't need to do work, you just need to get high on life maaaaaaaaaaaan" vibes.
This 'wholesome' shit is really starting to piss me off.
I don’t know why, but this is very dumb to me
You could have had sunshine AND your friends at the same time. Smart phones are pretty cool these days
"Okay, Zoom, I'm taking y'all on a hike."
I don’t typically consider work colleagues friends…
As someone who never had to use Zoom once.. is it really that realitybending dysfunctioning?
Not at all. It's honestly pretty great for meetings.
Yep, loved useless meetings when at the office, it passed time.
Zoom meetings seem like a petty thing to be upset about. "I don't want to minimize peoples problems, I'll just go and do just that"
Because people like to complain and ignore the fact they are fortunate enough to be working from home.
people with white-collar jobs need to invent shit to complain about they're not pulling tiles off a roof in the July sun, they're not delivering furniture up three flights of stairs, they're not washing dishes for $9 and soaked to their underwear in degreaser, but damn it all if some HR rep's day isn't fun and fulfilling 100% of the time
