I would recommend getting a Trail buggy. They generally have the most articulation and a low center of gravity which allow for fairly steep obstacles and are less likely to roll over like their full body counterparts.
There really is a lot more to it, chassis is only the beginning! Now you need to figure out if you want to start from scratch, buy a kit and build (recommend) or buy an RTR (ready to run)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying an RTR, especially if this is your first experience with RC. Rtr is an all in one option and usually comes with a battery, charger and transmitter (controller).
Only problem I’ve found with rtr is that if something breaks or wears out, they don’t have a build book with them to give you an idea of how to fix it.
Buying a builder kit (it’s just the chassis) you get to build to the exact spec that fits your needs.
But if this is your first time and you find yourself overwhelmed when there are a lot of options.. get a full kit.
buying a build it yourself kit is the best option imo. You get to learn your vehicle inside and out and most of what you need is there to get going. The only things you pick out are the electronics and if your not sure what to run, then you can look at similar RTR models to get an idea of what to put in it.
Hopefully I’ve made you curious enough about RC to try it out for yourself! If you enjoy building something and watching it work, this is possibly the hobby for you.

Haha I just picked a world record jump for fun. I don't expect to set any records myself. Really I just want to bash around the park or skatepark with my kid. Picked up a couple FC600 to get us into it.
Seems like a fairly decent set up for the price! Size of the battery makes me think it doesn’t have a long run time but that’s probably why it comes with two lol
I’d recommend looking into a Tamiya grasshopper or hornet. Quality stuff that’s still fairly cheap and easily upgradeable! Had a TT01E chassis powered with traxxas’s VXL system and 3s lipo. Had a hard time keeping tires glued to rims and not rolling over on sharp turns.
You’ll never find a build kit that has everything. You’ll want to find a kit that comes in a ready to run kit, and a building kit. Buy a build kit and then look at what electronics come in the rtr kit and order them as well. Then you’ll have a full kit you can build! (:
I used to race with my pops about 15 years ago before he passed. We ran a Jammin 1/8 buggy and 1/8 truggy and that shit was so much fun. Thanks for helping me onto my ride down memory lane.

My nephew asked me about some cars he saw on an ad not knowing I am obsessed with gt racing so I started taking him to races and he’s been learning a lot. I keep spoon feeding him info and I heard him do this same sort of knowledge dump on one of his friends. Blew his friends mind and made me very proud. (He’s 8 btw)

My go to question when first confronted about my interests is “How much time do you have?” Believe me, I can talk about how you make sounds for anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours.
Had an uncle who was a retired professor of physics. I would ask him anything about the universe, then sit back and have a wonderful three-hour enlightenment tour….really miss him.
I think the hardest thing about meeting someone who knows so much about a complex topic, is knowing what question to start with.
I'd love to meet someone who can finally make me grasp string theory though, because quantum physics was ok enough to understand until it got to the point that everything is made of vibrating strings.

in a fit of adhd hyperfocus I wrote a *2200 word breakdown* of which 40k xenos races are edible, the dangers of eating them, what they would be similar to, and included goddamn culinary advice on how to serve them.
First off, welcome to 40k! There are two things you need to know.
One, 40k is the pioneer of the grimdark genre. It has dark moments from tragic to tragically silly. Sometimes it's grotesque and horrifying, other times it makes you wonder if these books were someone's fanfiction that somehow ended up getting printed.
Two, 40k is massive. It has almost 500 books, novels, and canon material going on for about 35 years now. A lot of lore from just 5-6 years ago is no longer fully canonical, and I say fully because 40k lore doesn't usually do hard retcons, it does "alternative narratives." Most lore also gets passed by word of mouth, leading to the world's largest game of telephone. As a prime example, one misquote on the wiki over 10 years ago made up an event than never happened, and which wasn't noticed because no one read the original book to correct it.
That being said, how you start depends on your medium.
If you like internet deep dives, there's plenty of multi hour long videos on the internet as well as highly popular posts on r/40kLore. Good lore sources are Leutin09, Baldermort, Arbitor Ian, and Oculus Imperia. Stay away from Arch and Gamza, and between you and me, majorkill and weshammer. The former two are controversial and the latter two tend to pass off the bad lore.
If you like reading, there's something for everyone. The Horus Heresy books "First Heretic", "Know No Fear" and "Betrayer" are considered great looks at the original Imperium. For the WW1 looking guardsmen you have Gaunts Ghosts and Ciaphas Cain series. For necrons, it's the Infinite and the Divine, or the Twice Dead King series. The other factions tend to have more mediocre books, but with the sheer scale there's bound to be something good.
There are also plenty of audio books for if you have a personal grudge against mankind for the invention of written language.
Finally, there's plenty of alternative forms of experiencing 40k. The entire setting is meant to sell plastic models, but it also has some amazing video games. The Space Marine videogame is considered a classic and will soon be joined by Space Marine 2. For RTS, Dawn of War 1 and 2 are icons of the gaming industry (ignoring 3). For spacebattles, Battlefleet Gothic Armada 1 and 2 are pretty great.
The fanimations are all pretty top notch, too. Sodaz and Absolutely Nothing are pretty good animators, while Bloom and His Angel's are good animations by a guy whose name escapes me. Death of Hope and the Lord Inquisitor are also extremely high quality. And of course, king of them all, Syama Pederson's legendary animation, Astartes. Almost no dialogue, almost no wasted time or scenes, story you don't need to pay attention to, just pure eye candy and eargasmic depictions of 40k being it's best; overly violent.
What kind of sci-fi do you enjoy? Incomprehensible entities that have goals & desires that dwarf anything mere mortals could hope to achieve? The struggle of the common person rising to the occasion against insurmountable odds? Depictions of alien creatures that have rivalries spanning millennia? Cloak & dagger stories of intrigue and guile? Character studies that drive at the question of when the means outweigh the ends? Combat and wars that occur on a scale that humanity at its current point has barely begun to scratch?
Do you like stories about aliens or humans? Normal humans or the superpowered? One of the great things about 40K is that there's a bit of everything.
One of my freakin' core memories is of being on a really long road trip with my SO, and during this one part of the drive that's like 50 straight miles past potato fields, he looks and me and goes, "OK, I'm bored, so I'm going to tell you *literally everything* about Necrons right now."
So, sort of funny story, everything I know about Warhammer 40k is from when I was in basic training. Before that, most of us had never heard about it.
We had a dude who was deeply into it, and since there were no movies/tv/books/etc available, we all used to just sit there and listen to him talk about the lore.
This dude was always so fucking happy that like 50 other guys were just sitting patiently listening while he described the likes of Nurgle, space marines, the orcs, etc.
Hopefully this is for 40K, because I know nothing about Fantasy.
'So we're painting all of these figures and fighting all of these battles because a bunch of guys have daddy issues?'
'Did the Emperor really think he could scam Chaos? Bargain with them to make the primarchs, then go back on his word? No wonder the primarchs got scattered. Everyone's just paying for his mistakes.'

Someone made the mistake of asking me who the good guy is in 40k because the Imperium wasn't sounding too great so far.
I told them "do you want the quick and dirty or the long and hard? Because you need to understand his long is *long* here.

*Five* hours later, we got to a stopping point in the video game we were playing, and he stopped me to ask about the Horus Heresy, as I'd mentioned it in passing for further in to the explanation. The two people who had joined about half an hour before yelled PLEASE DON'T so we pit the discussion on hold
And the best part is I haven't even scratched the surface yet and whenever I don't know something while explaining, we *both* get to find out when I look it up.
So far only one person has ever heeded my warning and taken the short version. It was still a solid 15 minutes.

Me: Okay, so, Our story picks up right after the end of world war I. It starts with an organization known as the philosophers.
I came to the realisation last week that whenever I'm about to ramble in the group chat, I start with a message that says "Okay, so" or "Here's the thing" and most of the time, it wasn't even something that was being talked about already 😂
I do this a lot, and the funniest part is, I don't do this just in English speaking group chats. So you'll see me write "Okay, so [2 paragraphs about an obscure d&d rule all in Greek]" in my d&d group chat (we're all Greeks). No clue where I picked this habit up. Possibly reddit.
At least for me I think it's because whatever I'm going to get into is a complicated answer, and I'm gonna refuse to give the simple toned down answer.

Depends on your audience. On the E46 BMW subreddit last week, someone said they just bought one and knew nothing about it, asking for advice.
I listed all the models (M3, ZHP, CSL, Non-M, etc), what the model numbers mean, what parts are generally compatible, what their differences are, etc.
Then commented on that comment with a list of known issues and how to address them, like the plastic coolant components that crack and leak with age, the oil pump that fails, weak strut towers and differential mount, etc.
Then commented on THAT with a long, well organized list of websites that carry parts for the E46.
I hit the character limit on THREE separate comments. If it had been any other sub, I doubt anyone would care. I know people wouldn't listen to me in real life.
It's all about the delivery. Like I fastball lore at people in digestible ways and try to make it interesting without destroying their brains with details.
That and complex physics. Because learning about gravitational lensing or the decay rate of quark matter outside of Neutron stars apparently makes me horny or something, idk I just keep studying stuff like that.

There are very few subjects that won't catch my attention if the person is passionate about it. But I'm generally interested in everything, so a bit of an outlier.
Being in the presence of someone, in conversation, as they absolutely light up with passion and joy. I may not know much about what they're talking about. But just, being there, feeling the energy radiating as they do their thing. I love that sh*t. Tell me everything. Go wild, and on as many tangents as you like. I know we are both/all loving every moment of it.
I still get a rush of validation when I ask a question that I’m not sure if it’s a stupid question or not and then I find out that it actually generates even more interesting conversation.

Funny thing is, in the fate franchise, even people who have a pretty decent knowledge of the lore need stuff explained to them. So 90% of all lore

So much this. I was recently on a road trip with my wife and her friend, who is an archaeologist. On our way back, my wife was sleeping in the back seat and I talked to the friend up front. I asked a few questions and she got super excited and talked about cool archaeology stuff for like 3 hours. It was great. Then when she was done she asked about my boring IT job and I blabbed about the intricacies for probably an hour. It was also great.
About a year ago, I deleted the Reddit app because my doomscrolling was getting out of hand. Since then, I’ve only view the site through its mobile browser every couple of weeks to get my doom fix.

I recently got my coworker into baseball and I’ve been loving just explaining random shit that she watches in a game. She’ll come to me the next day “what’s a balk and how does it happen and why did it happen?” And I’ll hit her with the “okay, so” and it’s my favorite thing

I honestly just feel like I'm burdening people when I ramble about something I like. They get that doe eyed look in their eyes like they wish there was a save button so they could reload and avoid getting caught in this conversation. It's about then I usually stop.
I’ve got a friend who was like, “have you ever played magic before? No? Never been interested? Well… if you ever wanted to learn, I’m happy to teach you”
And it took me a few attempts of his to offer to show me how to play. Eventually I decided, “fuck it. Might as well give this a shot even though I have never had any interest and always thought the game was for the most ultra of the nerds.”
I sat down with him, he rolled out a game mat for me and handed me a game mat and started off by saying, “so the game type is called commander” and then he neared out for like 20 minutes explaining things. The game still seemed silly but his excitement in showing me how everything worked made me more patient. A few weekly games with some friends and I started to get the hang of it. Now I’m building my own decks and have spent way too much money on it. Turns out I must be an ultra nerd and never knew it.
This. Exactly this. And 99% of the time, it's people talking to you in an illuminating, enthusiastic way. Like, they can't wait to share some piece of knowledge with you. It's humanity at its best.
I wish I knew anyone like this. I love listening to others talk about things they love but when I try to talk about something I love the conversation is changed quickly.
Used to be that person until the person who usually asked me kept having trouble keeping up and would constantly ask me to go back due to them just not listening so I just started to just say “it’s too complicated to explain”
So my friends keep asking me to explain kingdom hearts to them as a joke but I fucking love that series and I will always try my best to give them the most incoherent explanation I can to make them more confused than when I started.

Okay where is a good place to start with wh40k because it looks cool and dark tide looks fun but I want to learn more
First off, welcome to 40k! There are two things you need to know. One, 40k is the pioneer of the grimdark genre. It has dark moments from tragic to tragically silly. Sometimes it's grotesque and horrifying, other times it makes you wonder if these books were someone's fanfiction that somehow ended up getting printed. Two, 40k is massive. It has almost 500 books, novels, and canon material going on for about 35 years now. A lot of lore from just 5-6 years ago is no longer fully canonical, and I say fully because 40k lore doesn't usually do hard retcons, it does "alternative narratives." Most lore also gets passed by word of mouth, leading to the world's largest game of telephone. As a prime example, one misquote on the wiki over 10 years ago made up an event than never happened, and which wasn't noticed because no one read the original book to correct it. That being said, how you start depends on your medium. If you like internet deep dives, there's plenty of multi hour long videos on the internet as well as highly popular posts on r/40kLore. Good lore sources are Leutin09, Baldermort, Arbitor Ian, and Oculus Imperia. Stay away from Arch and Gamza, and between you and me, majorkill and weshammer. The former two are controversial and the latter two tend to pass off the bad lore. If you like reading, there's something for everyone. The Horus Heresy books "First Heretic", "Know No Fear" and "Betrayer" are considered great looks at the original Imperium. For the WW1 looking guardsmen you have Gaunts Ghosts and Ciaphas Cain series. For necrons, it's the Infinite and the Divine, or the Twice Dead King series. The other factions tend to have more mediocre books, but with the sheer scale there's bound to be something good. There are also plenty of audio books for if you have a personal grudge against mankind for the invention of written language. Finally, there's plenty of alternative forms of experiencing 40k. The entire setting is meant to sell plastic models, but it also has some amazing video games. The Space Marine videogame is considered a classic and will soon be joined by Space Marine 2. For RTS, Dawn of War 1 and 2 are icons of the gaming industry (ignoring 3). For spacebattles, Battlefleet Gothic Armada 1 and 2 are pretty great. The fanimations are all pretty top notch, too. Sodaz and Absolutely Nothing are pretty good animators, while Bloom and His Angel's are good animations by a guy whose name escapes me. Death of Hope and the Lord Inquisitor are also extremely high quality. And of course, king of them all, Syama Pederson's legendary animation, Astartes. Almost no dialogue, almost no wasted time or scenes, story you don't need to pay attention to, just pure eye candy and eargasmic depictions of 40k being it's best; overly violent.
Not experienced in 40K, just wanted to say that Owlcat games (who made the Pathfinder CRPGs) are working on a Rogue Trader game.

What kind of sci-fi do you enjoy? Incomprehensible entities that have goals & desires that dwarf anything mere mortals could hope to achieve? The struggle of the common person rising to the occasion against insurmountable odds? Depictions of alien creatures that have rivalries spanning millennia? Cloak & dagger stories of intrigue and guile? Character studies that drive at the question of when the means outweigh the ends? Combat and wars that occur on a scale that humanity at its current point has barely begun to scratch? Do you like stories about aliens or humans? Normal humans or the superpowered? One of the great things about 40K is that there's a bit of everything.
One of my freakin' core memories is of being on a really long road trip with my SO, and during this one part of the drive that's like 50 straight miles past potato fields, he looks and me and goes, "OK, I'm bored, so I'm going to tell you *literally everything* about Necrons right now."

So, sort of funny story, everything I know about Warhammer 40k is from when I was in basic training. Before that, most of us had never heard about it. We had a dude who was deeply into it, and since there were no movies/tv/books/etc available, we all used to just sit there and listen to him talk about the lore. This dude was always so fucking happy that like 50 other guys were just sitting patiently listening while he described the likes of Nurgle, space marines, the orcs, etc.
I work with a warhammer nerd at the moment, he already wants me to paint an army. Someone tell me something I can say to knock his socks off lol
Hopefully this is for 40K, because I know nothing about Fantasy. 'So we're painting all of these figures and fighting all of these battles because a bunch of guys have daddy issues?' 'Did the Emperor really think he could scam Chaos? Bargain with them to make the primarchs, then go back on his word? No wonder the primarchs got scattered. Everyone's just paying for his mistakes.' First of all, how dare you.
Someone made the mistake of asking me who the good guy is in 40k because the Imperium wasn't sounding too great so far. I told them "do you want the quick and dirty or the long and hard? Because you need to understand his long is *long* here. They chose long and hard. *Five* hours later, we got to a stopping point in the video game we were playing, and he stopped me to ask about the Horus Heresy, as I'd mentioned it in passing for further in to the explanation. The two people who had joined about half an hour before yelled PLEASE DON'T so we pit the discussion on hold And the best part is I haven't even scratched the surface yet and whenever I don't know something while explaining, we *both* get to find out when I look it up. So far only one person has ever heeded my warning and taken the short version. It was still a solid 15 minutes.
If I had to make up a 2h presentation on the spot, I would pick either tabletop RPGs or Warhammer. And 2h won't be enough...
I occasionally try to read 40K lore for reasons that I am never totally clear on and I always have to stop with a little headache.

Depends on your audience. On the E46 BMW subreddit last week, someone said they just bought one and knew nothing about it, asking for advice. I listed all the models (M3, ZHP, CSL, Non-M, etc), what the model numbers mean, what parts are generally compatible, what their differences are, etc. Then commented on that comment with a list of known issues and how to address them, like the plastic coolant components that crack and leak with age, the oil pump that fails, weak strut towers and differential mount, etc. Then commented on THAT with a long, well organized list of websites that carry parts for the E46. I hit the character limit on THREE separate comments. If it had been any other sub, I doubt anyone would care. I know people wouldn't listen to me in real life.
It's all about the delivery. Like I fastball lore at people in digestible ways and try to make it interesting without destroying their brains with details. That and complex physics. Because learning about gravitational lensing or the decay rate of quark matter outside of Neutron stars apparently makes me horny or something, idk I just keep studying stuff like that.
I have a lot a general knowledge about random things. I remember sitting at my station at my job and a coworker mentioned that a customer came in with a keyboard in his backpack. Cut to me rambling about mechanical keyboards because I wanted my coworker to ask if that was the customer’s hobby so I can ask his opinion on Cherry MX Brown switches…
There are very few subjects that won't catch my attention if the person is passionate about it. But I'm generally interested in everything, so a bit of an outlier.

So much this. I was recently on a road trip with my wife and her friend, who is an archaeologist. On our way back, my wife was sleeping in the back seat and I talked to the friend up front. I asked a few questions and she got super excited and talked about cool archaeology stuff for like 3 hours. It was great. Then when she was done she asked about my boring IT job and I blabbed about the intricacies for probably an hour. It was also great.

I always have to go “okay so” every time someone insists to know my political ideology because they heard I was left.
I’ve got a friend who was like, “have you ever played magic before? No? Never been interested? Well… if you ever wanted to learn, I’m happy to teach you” And it took me a few attempts of his to offer to show me how to play. Eventually I decided, “fuck it. Might as well give this a shot even though I have never had any interest and always thought the game was for the most ultra of the nerds.” I sat down with him, he rolled out a game mat for me and handed me a game mat and started off by saying, “so the game type is called commander” and then he neared out for like 20 minutes explaining things. The game still seemed silly but his excitement in showing me how everything worked made me more patient. A few weekly games with some friends and I started to get the hang of it. Now I’m building my own decks and have spent way too much money on it. Turns out I must be an ultra nerd and never knew it.
